For those who might not understand: Colorado is at high altitude. Parts of Colorado are at very high altitude (14,400 ft at the highest peak). If the air density is low on a given day (e.g., due to low pressure atmospheric conditions - quite normal), then the "apparent altitude" from the point of view of flying is higher. However, a standard Cessna Bird Dog has an "absolute ceiling" of 24,800 ft (7,600 m) [service ceiling: 18,500 ft (5,600 m)] - so I suspect the problem was that the aircraft wasn't above what it could possibly fly at, but at an effective altitude so high which meant it was handing in unexpected ways.
