According to experts, the five most important things you need to know about healthcare in the United States are: 1) there's no universal healthcare; 2) healthcare can be very expensive; 3) most people in the U.S. have health insurance; 4) people get most of their care from their "primary care provider"; and 5) people usually need an appointment to get medical care.
All in all, the American healthcare system is unlike most others in the world, and that uniqueness comes with its own set of challenges. We’ve collected images from across the internet, shared by people who have experienced these challenges, to show how they appear in everyday life.

The Commonwealth Fund is a private, nonprofit foundation based in the United States that focuses on health care research and policy. Since 2004, it has been releasing reports comparing the performance of health systems in high-income countries.
In the latest edition, the fund's experts analyzed ten: Australia, Canada, France, Germany, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Sweden, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, and the United States.
They examined five key domains of health system performance: access to care, care process, administrative efficiency, equity, and health outcomes. The United States came in last.

"The United States is not just an outlier on health system performance; it’s an outlier on health care spending as well," the report said.
In 1980, U.S. expenditures (8.2% of GDP) were at the high end of the distribution among the 10 nations studied, but comparable to outlays in Germany (8.1%) and Sweden (7.7%).
Back then, most countries included in this analysis spent between 4 percent and 8 percent of GDP, and had increased spending to between 8 percent and 12 percent by recent years.
The U.S., however, has far outpaced them, spending more than 16 percent of its GDP on health care in 2022. The Commonwealth Fund predicts that figure to exceed 20 percent by 2035.

I Walked Into The ER, They Gave Me 1 Painkiller, Then Told Me They Don't Have An Ophthalmologist On Staff And To Go To A Different Hospital

Diabetic Supplies Getting Cancelled Because I Can't Afford Them
Type 1 diabetic, can't afford the $430 a month for my insulin pump supplies. Guess they can just cancel my life saving supplies oh well.
Your healthcare system is a joke! I dont pay a thing for diabetic treatment. I'm TII, but I take two medications twice a day. All free on our system.
The Netherlands, the United Kingdom, and Germany performed best on access overall, and both the Netherlands and Germany ranked at or near the top on affordability and availability as well. The U.K.'s health system was the top one for affordability.
The Netherlands, the U.K., and Germany excel on measures of affordability because each country has low cost-related barriers to care and minimal out-of-pocket health care expenses. In these countries, universal coverage ensures that copayments for health services, if any, are small, guaranteeing both access and affordability.
In the Netherlands, visits to primary care, maternity care, and child health care providers are fully covered; other health care services are covered once patients pay their annual deductible. In the U.K., the National Health Service (NHS) provides free public health care, including hospital, physician, and mental health care.

$7,000/Month Gets You 4 Pokes In The American Medical System (Psoriatic Arthritis)
In the U.S., lack of affordability is a pervasive problem. "With a fragmented insurance system, a near majority of Americans receive their health coverage through their employer," the report said.
"While the ACA's Medicaid expansions and subsidized private coverage have helped fill the gap, 26 million Americans are still uninsured, leaving them fully exposed to the cost drivers in the system. Cost has also fueled growth of private plan deductibles, leaving about a quarter of the working-age population underinsured."
In other words, due to extensive cost-sharing requirements, many patients are unable to visit a doctor when medical issues arise, causing them to skip medical tests, treatments, or follow-up visits, and avoid filling prescriptions or skip doses of their medications.
In terms of care availability, American patients are more likely than their peers in most other countries to report they don't have a regular doctor or place of care and face limited options for getting treatment after regular office hours. Shortages of primary care services add to these problems as well.
My Insurance Ended Up Backing Out Of My Duel Colonoscopy And Endoscopy
I Was Billed Over $2m For A Week In The Hospital
Is This A Joke? Someone Actually Has To Pay This
Most notably, the U.S. ranked second on care process. New Zealand was first, with Canada and the Netherlands close behind.
Strong U.S. performance in this category was the result of the successful provision of preventive services, such as mammograms and flu vaccinations, and an emphasis on patient safety.
With respect to preventive care, the U.S. record might reflect the vigorous pay-for-performance policies implemented by Medicare and other payers to reward the delivery of these services.
I Have Over A 100 Lipomas On Me And My New Dermatologist Wants To Treat Them As Cosmetic Which Means Insurance Won't Cover Them
American. The cost to remove one of these out of pocket is $300. Alot of them hurt when they are pushed in. My kids push them all the time accidentally when playing rough with me. My arms look deformed and lumpy. I had an amazing dermatologist who was sweet and helped write it on the bill in a way the insurance company would cover it 100%. She removed a bunch for me and was helping me. She retired and the place hired a new one. She doesn't do that and it doesn't matter to her if it hurts. She's set on them being cosmetic only and insurance now refuses to pay. 100×$300...$30,000 can't afford even to get the 20 removed off my arms now :( guess I'm a deformed freak with painful lipomas for the rest of my life. God I hate our healthcare system in America.
They should try contacting Dr Pimple Popper, I saw one of her YouTube videos where she was treating someone with this condition, she removed 68 lipomas.

In administrative efficiency — which focuses on doctors dealing with insurance or medical claims issues; requirements for providers to report clinical or quality data to governmental agencies; and patients' time spent resolving medical bill disputes and completing paperwork — the U.S. came in ninth, slightly ahead Switzerland.
In the uniquely complex U.S. system of public and private payers — featuring thousands of health plans, each with its own cost-sharing requirements and coverage limitations — physicians and other health care providers spend enormous amounts of time and effort billing insurers.

Under the equity domain — which reflected how people with below-average and above-average incomes differ in their access to health care and their care experience — the top belonged to Switzerland, the U.K., and the Netherlands.
Many of the countries have limits on cost sharing (or in the case of the U.K., no cost sharing at all) to ensure that the ability to pay does not constitute a significant barrier to obtaining needed health services. In Germany, which ranked fourth in this domain, out-of-pocket expenses are capped, with the cost of coverage being income-based. And because health coverage is mandatory, nearly everyone has access to a regular doctor.
The U.S. was once again last.

The Actual Cost Of A 30 Minute Therapy Session
This is the actual cost of a 30 minute telehealth therapy appointment. My therapist works from home. There is absolutely no reason for a single 30 minute therapy session with a social worker to cost this much. Yes, I realize I am not actually paying that amount but doesn't anyone see what's wrong with this?! I know my therapist didn't get paid that much. Where does this money go?

In The United States, This Is What $14,714.49 Of Medication Looks Like
Finally, health outcomes. Here, the U.S. ranked last on four out of five of the criteria. Life expectancy is more than four years below the 10-country average, and the U.S. has the highest rates of preventable and treatable deaths for all ages. The ongoing substance use crisis and the prevalence of gun violence in the U.S. contribute significantly to its poor outcomes, with more than 100,000 overdose deaths and 43,000 gun-related deaths in 2023 — numbers that are much higher than in other high-income countries.
American Healthcare In A Nutshell

I Am Not Allowed To Talk Directly To My Health Insurance. I Have To Go Through This Middle Man
Bill For A Stomachache
Despite its record on care process, the U.S. continues to trail other countries in almost every other respect.
"Despite spending a lot on health care, the United States is not meeting one of the principal obligations of a nation: to protect the health and welfare of its residents," The Commonwealth Fund concluded in its report. "Most of the countries we compared are providing this protection, even though each can learn a good deal from its peers. The U.S., in failing this ultimate test of a successful nation, remains an outlier."

My Gyno Is Trying To Charge My Insurance (That I Know Will Try To Argue It) For An Iud I Didn't Receive
So I went in to get an IUD, but couldn't get it done since my gyno didn't have the proper dilator at the clinic and was told I'd have to get it done at the hospital, thats all fine and dandy. Well then I decided to check my health portal since the appointment hadn't posted last time I had logged in, low and behold they're trying to charge me for an IUD I did not receive. Like you really think my insurance won't bat an eyelash when I have another appointment for an additional IUD.
That's a screwup on the doctor's office, not the insurance company. They should know better - there are severe penalties for insurance fraud.
When You Live In America And Can't Afford Healthcare
I've used chopsticks before now. I'm in the UK btw. Gosh bless the NHS helpline. Freephone number and they'll assess you. Can it be treated at home, do you need to see a doctor the next day or do you need an ambulance to A&E? If you can treat it at home? They'll tell you what to do, how to do it, what to keep a look out for in case it's a bad break. For free.
The fund believes reversing the U.S. health system would require demanding interventions at all levels by both government and the private sector.
The country must expand and strengthen insurance coverage to reduce financial barriers and make care more equitable, while simplifying and standardizing insurance to cut administrative waste and costs. Building a stronger, better-compensated primary care workforce, using technology effectively, and curbing market consolidation would make care more functional and affordable.
The U.S. also needs greater public health investment and authority to handle not just possible future pandemics but also chronic disease.
Finally, true improvement also demands actions besides those directly related to health care services. These include efforts to reduce gun violence and substance use, to remedy the historical and ongoing effects of racism, and to institute policies that protect against poverty, homelessness, and hunger.
My Ambulance Bill
I was very sick last month with myocarditis and had to be transported off site for cardiac MRI and had to be on oxygen and EKG. Although it was down the street and a short 3 minute ride in Boston. Unfortunately since I was having difficulty communicating due to shortness of breath and leaving my house with not even my ID or belongings. Clarified with them about my insurance and will hopefully be resolved. Will hear back in a few weeks. Stressful

My Visit To The ER As A Veteran. This Is What Universal Healthcare Would Look Like
As a veteran, I will agree that the bill being covered is nice, but you take on a lot of responsibility in advocating for yourself and weeding through many bad doctors to get a good one. To get a referral to see a specialist can be like pulling teeth where I am, and for some reason, it takes several tries to get the right referral because the doctor puts in the referral, and somewhere between leaving his computer and the referral reaching my hands it is changed to a regular provider in the community. Another doc told me i didn't need to follow my treatment plan that was set up prior to entering into VA healthcare for chronic pain management that I had been working closely with a pain management specialist for like 4 years. UGH!

Had To Take My 3 YO Son To The ER Last Week. Fear Was Appendicitis But After 45 Min Of Moaning He Burped For 5 Seconds & Was Fine So We Asked To Leave. The Bill? $4,179
I called the hospital billing dept. You won't believe how this ends. Here's the breakdown: $2,215 - "The visit" $740 - 2 min visit with the doc $1,224 - "Standard" nurse's swab of my son's throat & nostrils for covid/strep test $0.07 - Tylenol (how generous) I proceed to tell them (politely) that the same "tests" are $50 at a pharmacy down the road & they weren't even related to my son's symptoms. There must be a mistake. Nope. I tell her we're technically "cash pay" (we are members of a healthcare sharing org), and ask if there is a cash-pay discount. She says, "Yes. Let me calculate it for you." Cash pay price: $685 TOTAL Of course, I'm relieved personally, but I can't help but think... THIS is why millions are paying insane amounts in insurance premiums every month. ERs/hospitals are out of control. Can someone make this make sense?

Losing My Semi-Affordable Healthcare Plan Because Providing It Put The Company At “Undue Financial Risk”
I (32) am a self-employed writer, so I pay for my own health insurance. It’s been so hard finding any kind of affordable plan that covers my medications, has a low deductible, and offers super basic care. And by semi-affordable, I mean I still pay $200/month premiums, $60/month meds, plus copays, my deductible blah blah blah (if we consider that reasonable) Just received a notice a few weeks ago that my plan premium would go up in 2024 but the deductible would go down. Did the math and decided it was worth it. Was really to re-enroll w/ VA’s new marketplace next week. And then this came in the mail today. Living in America is a fever dream, and I hate it.
Ummm, it's gonna get worse. My GOP Rep and his tribe of clowns have decided that ACA coverage subsidies are waste, fraud and a***e. I am going back to work to get coverage for the next 2 years until Medicare eligible.

Charged $992 For A $22 Tube Of Lidocaine At Chippenham Hospital In Richmond, VA
I was in a car accident a few months ago and visited the burn center for a minor airbag burn. I spent 20 minutes with a doctor whose time was worth $561, but apparently their magic Lidocaine was worth the $992 at a 5000% mark up. Whenever you call the hospital to get information about or dispute the charge, they always route you to a collections agency. The collections agency just claims they don’t dispute the charges and offer to take $100 off the bill. Their supervisor does the same thing.
I was never provided an estimate. I never agreed to pay this amount. They didn’t even give me the tube of lidocaine. Because I have a thousand dollar deductible, I’m now seriously in the hole for something I would have gladly picked up from the pharmacy. It’s obvious they survive by spinning you in circles until you give up.

Health Care In The US. "Urgent" Care
Our hospital chain 'reclassified' the Urgent Care into a "Ready Care". The difference? Ready Care is an offsite ER, with all the lovely fees. Especially galling is the actual ER is about 7 blocks away. Billing found that if you wrestle a pig in the mud, the pig likes it. Called my State Rep and Sen on this, and finally got the co-pay lowered to the Urgent Care amount.
Had 1 Appointment At A Psychology Center On Campus, Was Told It Would Only Be $18 And Paid That At The Appt. Got Sick, Had To Cancel My Next One. Now I Have An $86 Bill I Cant Afford
I went to a psychology center at my university for an intake appointment due to pretty severe anxiety. They told me it was sliding scale payments and due to my income would only be $18, so I went and that's what they paid. I felt pressured by the therapist to schedule a second appointment so I did, even tho I did not like her very much. Day of I'm throwing up so I call and cancel, they just say okay. Now a few weeks later I have an $86 bill, $72 because apparently my appointment is somehow $90 instead of the $18 I was told and $14 for a cancellation fee. I'll pay that fee, whatever, but I would never have scheduled an appointment if I knew it'd be $90 because I do not have that much money. I'm literally working two jobs and only eating twice a day to survive rn. I'm so pissed off at them sending me a bill way over what I was told weeks later and I genuinely don't know how I'm going to pay it. It makes me sick just thinking about literally throwing away $86 for something I got nothing out of.

The American Insurance System Is The Best, And We Don't Want Socialist Medicare For All
We left the US for two reasons: Trump and the cost of medical care. We are SO much happier.
Just because it's marketed as healthcare doesn't mean it's healthcare.
As a non american this is just too dystopian and depressing to read all through. What i really don't understand is why the American people haven't gone all french revolution on their own government just over this.
We're in the middle of an authoritarian takeover that 1/2 the country is blind to. Why? "He can't do that", "he doesn't mean it "He's just joking". They forgot that they gave a convicted felon immunity. What could go wrong?
Load More Replies...Here’s my example. I’ll b 19 in a week for reference. My psych meds that I need to take every single day or face anxiety so bad I can’t function in public is $100-$300 a month after my parents excellent insurance. Currently my parents pay for it. Once I graduate college I have to pay the copay when I turn 26 I’ll lose access to their plan and my copay will skyrocket because I’ll be seen to whatever insurance company I apply to as high cost. In ≈7 years time I won’t be able to pay for my medication. Every time I refill my prescription I have to fight to get the non generic one as for this medication at least the name brand is the only one that works idk why. Soon I’ll need to work with a psychiatrist to figure out a different medication combo even though I’m finally stable after years of crippling anxiety and other stuff. Why do I need to change my medications? Because they are insanely expensive and I can’t afford them. Honestly I think about this a lot. F**k the USA.
The US...the only "civilized" Country that turns to it's people...without irony...and states, "Look, Universal healthcare is just too difficult to figure out."...While a majority of it's own residents turn to their neighbors, and state...without irony..."Going bankrupt from basic healthcare is an American Right! Anything else is Socialism!!!"
The US shouldn't be considered a first world country. And not just because of our healthcare system.
Load More Replies...And some deranged people really think they live in the greatest nation in the world. Healthcare alone shows usa is the worst developed country in the world. Then with the daily mass shootings and weekly school shootings on top of that😬 ”Only in america” can be said about a lot of negative things and not one single good one..
In comparison, I had leukemia. 6 weeks in hospital in isolation ward followed by 9 months out patient with daily chemo treatments alternating weeks. Biggest expense was that I paid for was parking as an out patient which was reduced to $3/day. Seeing the above stories and more, I truly do not know why anyone willingly stays in the US.
We are stupid enough to elect Trump again, why would we be smart enough to want universal health care? Our rIch overlords told the lemmings it was bad. Republicans in Congress think health care can put food on the table so they let sick people without work get sicker. Don't believe me, I can quote them. My country is effing stupid.
This is why an awful lot of non-USA people are genuinely baffled by the "USA, we're No 1!!" folks.
Jesus christ. Went into hospital last Friday with agonizing stomach pain got a ct scan and iv and morphine and discharged. Pain continued so I came back yesterday and another CT and ultrasound found some issues so I was admitted. Total cost? 0. F**k yeah canada. I'd be 40k in the hole in the US by now. Almost makes me feel slightly better about the pain and possible diangoses.
Said it before, I'll say it again... Gosh bless for the NHS in the UK. It's not a perfect system but it's free. You can phone 111 and be assessed. I had an infection in my right ankle which is serious enough in itself but being disabled? It's a different level due to potential complications. They sent out hospital transport, I was there and back within 2hrs with antibiotics, a new dressings pack and a warning to try and stop having supermarket trolleys hit my ankle! It took a few hours for the on call doctor to phone me back but that's okay. I did an calculation of how much everything has cost so far and it's now probably £1.5 million if you take into account every single thing from my having Covid and Spinal Bruising at the same time. Calipers, crutches, replacement crutches, new calipers...my raised toilet seat, the frame around my toilet, shower rail..My regular prescriptions. My eye drops... The specialists for my right eye... I'd be absolutely beyond destitute if not for the NHS.
Which is why I won't hear a single bad word against the NHS. Is it perfect? No, no system is but at least we don't face bills such as these. (I'll gripe and whinge about my specialist and the two big " short, slender, sharp-pointed metal pin with a raised helical thread running round it and a slotted head" did with my calipers and shoes another time!)

If you know in advance you need any in-patient procedure, it's better to go to another country where it's much cheaper and you won't have to wait. Medical tourism is big in countries like India for a reason. In many situations, you could fly there, get your treatment, and even a have a little vacation for far less than the US. I live in South Asia where medical care is cheap. When I recently fell and broke my knee, I had to have an operation and spend three nights in the hospital. Total cost was less than $1,500. Physiotherapy costs around $4/day. I hate to think how much that would have cost in the US.
