Firearms reached Japan in A.D. 1543, when two Portuguese adventurers armed with harquebuses (primitive guns) arrived on a Chinese cargo ship. The Japanese were so impressed by the new weapon that they commenced indigenous gun production, greatly improved gun technology, and by A.D. 1600 owned more and better guns than any other country in the world. But there were also factors working against the acceptance of firearms in Japan. The country had a numerous warrior class, the samurai, for whom swords rated as class symbols and works of art (and as means for subjugating the lower classes). Japanese warfare had previously involved single combats between samurai swordsmen, who stood in the open, made ritual speeches, and then took pride in fighting gracefully. I'M TRYING ;_; I just recently got completely cut-off and ostracized from a Discord community, because I told someone in private messages something I'd done when I was 15 (25 years ago) and they reported what I'd said to the mods, and even though I'd said it in DM and not in the public channel, I got permabanned. I was a little (okay a lot) heartbroken because it was a community that shared an interest/hobby of mine, and I am otherwise EXTREMELY isolated IRL. (Note: I know I was stupid to say something to someone, but I didn't expect them to report me to the mods since I'd said it in a PRIVATE message. It was something I did at age 15 that was minorly illegal [like shoplifting] and I've obviously learned my lesson, haven't done it since, and am ashamed I even did it once. Just didn't expect to get permabanned and shunned as if I were a Pilgrim-era witch. The lesson here is: never trust people you just met but think are your friends online.)
