I feel for you. At 20(early 2011) I was a student at university. I had a casual job in the holidays, but didn't earn enough to pay taxes. I had been suffering with depression for several years already by that stage, and due to exams I'd neglected to see the doctor to renew my prescription. I had my third suicide attempt, overdose. I was driven to the hospital by friends (previous visit had been an ambulance), as soon as I told reception I'd taken an overdose 24 hours prior I was seen by triage, then taken through to doctors within 30 minutes. Medicated, blood tests, IV, antisickness drugs to combat the reaction I had to the IV. Psychiatrist. Mental health team. Had a five day hospital stay. Mental health team stayed in touch after discharge. Total cost? Nothing. Free. I'm lucky enough to live in the UK. Had I been through that, and been met with a bill like that, I'd have wished I'd been successful.

In Australia and New Zealand an ambulance is free. We pay a levy with our power bills that covers it. We also have free healthcare as well.... so there’s that.

Another one my Ama told me about my obnoxious eighth-grade father: He was always the first one finished with tests, and he finished one in about half the class period, so he went back to his desk and sat down. He was sort of looking around, not really at anyone in particular, but his teacher snapped at him to "keep his eyes on his own paper." He told her that he was finished with the test and besides, he wasn't looking at anyone's exam. But the teacher said that he needed to "set a good example" to which my father replied, "Why is it my job to set a good example?" She locked him in the closet for the rest of the period. My father was a very testy eighth grader, apparently...

When my sister was 13, my parents grounded her for something she did, so she slipped out of her first floor window and went to live with a friend... This was waay before cellphones, mind you, so my mother was frantic when she found her missing, but my dad had an inkling on where she went, so she called my sister's friend's mom, (who had been told my sister had permission to come for a sleepover) and they decided to simply do nothing. Let her stay at her friend's house for a bit, see what she does next... Welp, it took about 2 days before my sister came back, really pissed that our paren't weren't scouring the neighbourhood for her with posters, police dogs, the works, like she'd seen in the movies...

Not mine, but something my Ama told me about my dad growing up: When he was in eighth grade, my dad was in swing choir. Around that time, he also refused to smile on command because, well, he was an obnoxious 14-year-old. But the swing choir teacher always told him to smile more, again and again and again, but he never did. One day she had had enough and snapped at him, "Why won't you smile? Is that too hard? Smile or get out." So he said okay, walked out, and never sung in choir ever again XD

That's like CPS took a learning disabled couple to court to say they were unfit parents. Part of their argument was that the parents were feeding their 4 year old chicken nuggets instead of boiled chicken. I was like "Excuse me..what planet are you from? 85% of the parents out there feed their kids chicken nuggets because they know the kids will eat it and not turn their nose up at it. Should we remove all those kids too?" Sometimes "experts" don't know as much as they think they do.
