Load More Replies...To learn more about why so many employees are quitting nowadays, we reached out to a couple of experts on the topic: Claire Wasserman, Founder and Author of Ladies Get Paid, and Danny Nelms, CEO of Work Institute.
"Working with 50,000 women over the past decade, and coaching more than 6,000 job seekers, the trend I'm seeing for why people quit their jobs these days is mainly around underearning and underlearning," Claire shared with Bored Panda.
"There is a lack of growth, whether it's in their role or their paycheck (or both) and they believe they can find something better - or create it themselves! The other big reason is a lack of work-life balance, both in terms of hours and emotional toll, and they're simply not willing to sacrifice themselves in service of a job," she explained.

Where do bosses get off expecting other workers to come in and fill a vacancy? No! The boss's job is to ensure the company is fully staffed, not the employee's.
So many people are looking for seasonal work like this but can't get hired b/c the company wants to save money. The boss just had to look through applications submitted for seasonal work and boss' problem with Sarah is solved. I did seasonal work like this all the time to earn emergency funds on top of my day job. We're always out there and desperate.
Load More Replies...Deserved honestly, asking someone to come in after they got it off is kind of an a-hole move
How can people that and clueless (and dumb I guess) be in management? I know they are, but...

Not in the US, unfortunately. It's like bosses are allergic to chairs

After too many years of working for ineffectual, incompetent bosses who were more concerned with rigid policies and covering their butts, I started my own businesses. And trust me, if I had been half as bad as my old bosses, my employees would've said something instead of staying with me for years.
Smart idea to leave. If management can't see that the employee is much more productive in a sitting position, then they are clueless and will go under soon. Also by not "investigating" the event the lead got that reprimand thrown back in his face.
I don't understand the American obsession with not having your employees sit. In my country it is not only legal to sit e.g. at the cashier, the employer is _obligated_ to provide sitting options in jobs that require a lot of standing.
From a pencil pushers aka accountant perspective, it is about the money. Not only do they not have to buy, and replace x amount of chairs/stools, you can fit more workers in area z if they are standing. That was basically what we seen/heard at my last job. Also when they chose the building, they took into account their production then, and projected production. Started out with only a day shift, now work two 9 hr shifts (there for 10 hrs, 1/2 hr lunch, two 15 minute breaks). Would probably do longer shifts, but computers /mechanical equipment need time to rest, and do updates.

"The main reasons people quit jobs today often center around unmet preferences or expectations by the company," Danny added. Based on Work Institute research and trends, these include: Career Development (18%), Work-Life Balance (12%), Health & Family Concerns (13%) and Management Behavior (10%).
"Employees frequently cite limited growth opportunities and unclear career pathways as key drivers of dissatisfaction," the CEO explained. "The demand for flexibility and wellness support has risen, with employees leaving roles that fail to accommodate personal and professional balance."

Load More Replies...Caregiving responsibilities, mental health challenges, and a growing focus on well-being are also significant factors prompting turnover, Danny continued. "[And] ineffective leadership and lack of managerial support directly contribute to employee dissatisfaction."
The expert pointed out that it might surprise many readers to not see pay listed as a top reason. "But our research shows less than 10% of employees cite pay as the root cause," he noted. "Instead, pay concerns often signal deeper, unresolved issues within an organization’s culture, management practices, or opportunities for growth."

My mother had a toxic boss who threatened to fire her if she didn't go to work on the day my brother had surgery. We needed the money so she didn't quit. She still regrets not being with my brother, despite being a minor procedure and him being with other family members. Family matters. Sometimes you just can't say no. Managers, bosses etc know it very well how much we depend on our jobs. So sad
That's a horrible choice that she was forced to make, but if it was forced then it wasn't a choice. Glad your brother is ok. She's a good mother

Employers really need to learn that when it comes to priorities in life, they are the bottom banana.
So what is the best way to go about quitting a job? "Relationships are everything," Claire shared. "So even if your job might not give you the consideration of a two-week grace period, you should extend the courtesy to them (or if you’ve been there a long time, give them more time. Though, be prepared that if you give too much notice, they may have you leave sooner than you were ready)."
"Document your work and create transition plans for ongoing projects, express gratitude for the opportunities and learning experiences so you can keep the door open for future professional connections," the expert says. "The only time maybe it’s okay to quit abruptly is if you’re in an unsafe situation."

Danny also says that the best way to quit a job is thoughtfully and professionally, because how you leave can shape your future opportunities. He first recommends making sure that you give proper notice. "Two weeks is standard, but more notice may be appreciated for high-level or critical roles," the CEO explained. "Always review your employment contract for specific requirements."
Make sure that you also explain thoughtfully why you're leaving. "While you're not obligated to provide detailed reasons, a respectful and constructive explanation can leave a positive impression," Danny continued. And avoid burning bridges. "Express gratitude for the opportunities you had even if the experience wasn’t perfect. You never know when paths may cross again."

Finally, participate in your company's exit interview. "It is important for companies to better understand why employees quit and this information helps employers improve employee experience," Danny shared. "Quitting abruptly should be a last resort and reserved for situations where remaining in the role poses immediate harm to your health, safety, or well-being."

Three people quit in less than 2 weeks. The manager should be next to go.
Next, we asked the experts what the most important things to consider before quitting a job are. "It takes on average six months to find a new job, so unless you have another one lined up, make sure you have all your safety nets in order: finances, relationships, and a roadmap for the job search, including your materials like resume and LinkedIn profile," Claire told Bored Panda.

Claire also says it's crucial to at least have identified a direction based on your goals with an outline for how you will get there before saying goodbye to your job. "Make sure to break everything down into small steps though, otherwise it'll be a lot harder to follow through," she warns. "Looking for a job can become a full-time job, and if you're doing it while unemployed, you may start to feel the financial squeeze and get stressed. It's better to chip at it a little bit every day while you still have a job, for as long as you can."

Better not to give notice anyway. I gave the two week notice because I felt it was the right thing to do, even though it was a toxic work environment. After, said boss begged me to stay and when I refused he went around and talked badly about me to other Staff in front of my desk. I just walked out. I worked at a place that would walk you out immediately. They wondered why no one gave two weeks anymore, I s**t you not.
Load More Replies...Danny also says it's best to reflect on these key factors before making any decisions: your reason for leaving, opportunities for resolution, your financial readiness, your future goals and your workplace relationships.
"Are you leaving to escape a problem or pursue a better opportunity? The latter tends to lead to more satisfaction long-term," he noted. "Have you tried addressing your concerns with your manager or HR? Sometimes, changes can be made to improve your situation."

"Ensure you have a safety net or a solid plan in place, especially if you don’t have another job lined up," Danny continued. And when it comes to your future goals, will leaving this job bring you closer to your career aspirations? "Be intentional about your next steps," the expert says. "[Finally], consider the professional relationships you’ve built and how they might support or influence your next chapter."

All Burger King Workers Quit This Location Because Of Low Wages. Good For Them! Bk In Alabama
This was from a friend who lived in Alabama. I blurred out the city name for what I thought may be safety reasons. The staff all quit this locations because of sh*t working conditions and bad pay.
Good for them. If this happened more often, it would improve the lives of the workers. Remember Gandhi and " civil disobedience, but no violence ".
I worked briefly at a Burger King when I was younger and hated every minute of that place. When I quit they acted as if " how dare you quit on us" btw I quit because I became a Registered Nurse. Hmmmm... let me think Burger King or being an RN which i had to go to college to become. No contest BK !

Danny also says it's important to consider company culture, opportunities for growth, work-life balance, management quality and mission and vision alignment before taking a new job. "Look for a workplace where employees feel respected, valued, and supported," he shared. "Employee reviews and asking questions during interviews can give insight."

I Left My Job Of 2 Years To Go Do My Masters And Wanted To Bake Them A Cake To Say Thank You
When I retired from teaching math, they hired three math teachers. I presume it was one to replace me and two for damage control.
I once had a job as assistent to the boss. First year all was great. In the second nothing I did was good enough. When I left, they hired 3 full time employees to do what I had covered. I still consider this a compliment.
Load More Replies...When I had to quit Kinko's in San Jose, I was doing payroll, bookkeeping, bank deposits, inventory, and processing new employees, and when I had time, I was helping out on the counter. All for $10/hr. The person who replaced me was so slow, all she did all day was the payroll and they paid her $12/hr. But honestly, I loved that job and would have stayed in it. I just got pushed out of the state by high rents (my rent went from $450/mo to $800/mo in just one raise).
That would be me. I kept taking on more & more (small) responsibilities: No one knew how to update the after hours greeting on our phone system, no one knew where I bought the toner from, no one knew how to REPLACE the toner, no one knew where we'd leased the printer from. No one knew how to refill the Pitney Bowes mailing machine. No one knew who our IT support was. I could go on and on. When I quit (without notice, because F*CK that guy) it resulted in chaos. Did they call me for answers? Why yes, yes they did. Did I answer a single phone call? Why, no. No, I did not.
"Try to look at your career holistically," Claire continued. "What's the life you want and how does your job fit into that? It's also okay for a job to just be a job. Sometimes we just need a paycheck and there's no shame in that! Nor is there any shame in asking for help; in fact, seeking outside perspective is critical to finding new ways to see the world and ourselves."

Quit My Night Shift Job Last Night
"One important takeaway is that quitting a job is a natural part of career progression, but how and why you leave matters," Danny shared with Bored Panda. "Employers also have a responsibility in this equation. Organizations that hold themselves accountable for being great places to work retain their best talent and reduce the need for employees to consider leaving in the first place."
"Job seekers should remember that you’re interviewing the company as much as they’re interviewing you," he added. "Aim for a role where you feel empowered to grow, contribute, and thrive."

Considering Sending This Response
It's currently past 11 here. I've been so sick I've only gotten out of bed twice, not even well enough to go to the Walgreens across from my apartment to buy a COVID test. Since sending this, my manager has sent me the contact numbers of 3 staff who I know are as worn out of our manager as I am. I make minimum wage as a Senior Rep at GameStop.
It's the manager's job to find coverage. Why do managers so often ask the employees to find coverage?
It is delegating and shedding responsibility. Let the sick guy find coverage, then blame him when everyone is overworked. When I became a manager I swore to never do that. And I didn't.

I Put My Two Week Notice In At Work. This Is My Active Goodbye Message I Leave On My Desk
Quit My Job After 6 Years
Left my keys on the chair in the office after everyone left. 6 years of being mistreated and giving my all to the store, working 6 days a week for the store.
Today Is My Last Day Of Work. Gonna Leave This Background On For The Next Guy
And I Oop
What manager is incompetent enough that he tells workers to call around and find cover? Like that's literally manager's job.
I've had a few managers pull this c**p. My current manager put up a sign in the break room saying that it's the employees job to find coverage, and if you cannot you have to come in. Absolutely not, that's their job.
Load More Replies...See, I don't get this. Since when is it the employees job to see that their shift is covered? That sounds to me like something the Manager should be handling.
The last company I worked for actually gave you 3 days off (paid) if a family pet died. I thought it was extremely decent of them.
Years ago I had a young officer in the military look at me and told me to smile because I looked like my dog had died. When I told him that is exactly what had just happened, that young man turned tail and ran out of the office. Did not see him in that part of the command building for weeks after that. He was a total jerk.
Reminds me of when I had to euthanize my poor kitty after she threw a clot overnight that left her hind end paralyzed. I begged my mgr (I was the assistant manager) to simply SWITCH shifts and I'd work for her the next day, when I would otherwise have been off. Nasty b***h refused, no other key holders could cover because they were already working, or would end up in *absolutely forbidden* overtime for the week. I ended up having to put her to sleep on my way into work to close that night. Adding insult to injury, my manager had scheduled an interview she never told me about. The girl was very kind and waited for me to arrive, but I then had to conduct an interview the minute I walked in the door, while still crying. I'm not surprised she didn't want the job. BTW, this was Starbucks. Surprise surprise.
Alright, but people like this, who are so unsympathetic that their employee just lost something very important to them, would probably say the same if you told them your grandma died. And I’m sure you would find that a much more reasonable excuse to miss work.

We were down to 4 employees at a company where a full staff would have been 9-12, I was the most senior employee and I had only been there 6 months. The manager and regional manager continued to push for shorter service times per customer while also increasing the number of tasks that had to be completed per customer and expecting a literal 100% accuracy rate. After I was written up and reminded I could still be fired even though I had given my 2 weeks I decided me finishing those days was a waste od everyone's time.
Literally what nimcopop will threaten people on notice with firing? Had to deal with few people who gave notice, the last two weeks they just showed up and didn't care. my boss pissed me off just the right amount and I decided that was my last straw and I wasn’t going to continue to be treated badly by my SM and the company as a whole. Called out of my next two shifts and then this morning before I left for a week vacation, I dropped off this cutesy resignation letter aka my “F you” to my boss.
I gave a two-week notice once and my boss told me I could leave a couple days early if I wanted since I had such a long commute. I decided to do that, only to find she fired me for job desertion and then BACKDATED her firing to the day I put in my two-week notice. I got HR to correct it and then eventually got my ex-boss fired. It felt so good.
Simple, I Like It
Apparently in my last job I held the record for the shortest resignation letter. Polite resignation letter that is.

Don't Get Too Sentimental On Me (My Dm)
Or they sympathise with the worker because the company treats them like garbage too.

Got a new job but want to use my 2 weeks to relax/vacation before the next job starts. How does this email sound? Mind you this job doesn’t deserve a 2 week notice because they treat everyone so badly, I’ve been there for years and no mention of a raise at all, and I only get 5 days of PTO a year and only a few holidays.
Handing In My Notice Today
My Resignation Letter
Every time I've given a 2 week notice, the companies have cut me loose within 3 days. 2 weeks is a joke. Next time I quit I'm just going to dip.
My last job was working at a prison. I quit on the phone and said I wasn't coming in, they asked me like 5 times if I was coming in to work my shift. It felt so good to just dip :)
Load More Replies...I never told my last boss I was retiring because I had stopped speaking to him for a year. (I could get away with not speaking him because he was a coward.) I just filed with the central office. I presume they told him at some point.
That’s pretty amazing. How was he allowed to continue being a boss when he couldn’t interact with his employees?
Load More Replies...Why does an employee have to give 2 weeks notice when an employer can fire an employee on the spot? Why not give the employee 2 weeks notice too so they can start looking for another job? What the hell are you doing over there?
Depending on where you live you need to give 2 weeks notice to get severance pay. Many states are also work at will. Wonder why it's so bad? Look in the mirror. People voted for this. People bought the old capitalism good, socialism evil trope. How's it working out so far? Trumps about to take away ACA, raise prices on food, fuel and vehicles. The wealthy will get their taxes lowered and the middle class eliminated. Good luck with that.

But, decided to try something different, (supposed to have been 8 hr days / 5 day work week), so my last company job had me working 6 - 7 days a week at 12 to 16 hr days. This went on for nearly 4 years. My work load kept increasing from entering oil / gas well data, to creating maps, filing, repair old data logs and then creating digital copies after that had to trace certain data readings to create a new log file to over lap new data in order to evaluate the well data - extremely time consuming, creating a spreadsheet for my boss to track his diabetes, to running to off site storage units to organize and search for documents to watering the damn plants. Even custom built four computers for the geology department that I worked in. Saved the company nearly 13 grand with that. They fired me for a negative attitude and not doing enough. I refused to quit. They still owe me for vacation and sick leave that I never took and back pay for using my personal vehicle for company business. After being fired, my stress levels went down 100%, a month later I started my own little business and today, I am happily retired.
At my last job (it will be, I retired), I gave them 5 months' notice. They still didn't manage to find a replacement. In the end a friend of mine happened to be made redundant and she took the job, until she found a better one. I dread to think how some companies over here would cope with no-notice quitting.
It's such a shame that there is isn't a review site for potential employees to check out potential employees. Or is revolving door a thing?
Glassdoor job board encourages anonymous reviews of potential employers by current and former employees.

Dear thing This week I have:- 1.Had enough of your attitude 2.Had enough of your ‘management’ 3.Had enough of your bullying 4.Had enough of you, full stop. This is not 100% personal, though I once loved this job, I’ve had to play the song ‘9-to-5’ on a loop on the drive in, just in order to summon up the will to actually get to the building. Once or twice, I’ve failed and had to call in sick because I wasn’t able to physically bring myself to stand another 8 hours. Oh wait, it actually is 100% personal. You are a bad manager, you have no idea what you’re doing. You speak to me like I’m a child, well, more fool you, though if I were a child, I probably would have simply smeared my faeces somewhere. On an unrelated note, don’t look in your desk drawer. Cont.d in comments
You are clearly under the impression that my work-shy, hideously under-qualified, only-hired-because-her-mum-works-in-HR ‘equal’ has the sun shining out of her backside. I’d like to find out how that works out for you, but I’ll be long gone by then, so someone else can tell me. I seriously cannot wait to find out how quickly the proverbial hits the air-streaming apparatus. All due respect (which is none), Signed

I gave notice, worked all my shifts (despite him cutting my schedule) and made my exit without a goodbye conversation (which this blowhard liked to do). I just dropped off my keys and phone at the front desk in an envelope and his name on it. And I walked out. I always leave a job in a manner this is professional (even if it's not friendly). p.s. He got fired a year later for doing what we'd get fired for doing. He was with another employee when it happened and (as the law required) the employee HAD to report him! Karma.
