Exactly. And no matter how well meaning a Christianity is, it is a slippery slope. People here in the U.S. lay awake at night worried about Sharia, but turn around and take actions that opens the door for religion to run government. People came to this country for liberty because of that very reason and we need to recognize that. I have always been fairly moderate politically, but in my age I think I have become more libertarian where it's legal to hate everybody (kidding).

@lag, that's not what I said. I didn't say her parents wouldn't love her because of the rape. You said "if this god presented in the bible would be so loving there would be no need for a woman to fall victim to prostitution, rape, misoginy." My point was one of the most powerful loves in the universe is between a parent and child. A parent loving a child doesn't prevent evil people from doing evil things. If you believe in an all powerful God, would he have the ability to stop anything? Yes he would. But that question is answered specifically in Romans 1. "God gave them up to a debased mind to do what ought not be done. They were filled with all manner of evil, covetousness, malice. They are full of envy, murder, strife, and deceit...foolish, faithless, heartless, and ruthless." Humans said we want to be this way, he said OK.

@Fish Boden, no his information is actually correct. Women's and men's brains are different in the sex organ type of way. @lag, in other words, those situations (Abraham for ex) are not parallel with the situations I first described. The bible or God isn't necessarily condoning those practices, but they were almost necessity in earlier stages of human history. As far as bigamy, the bible was pretty silent on that for a time. What many scholars consider is due to the nature of those patriarchal societies, it was dangerous for a woman to be on her own. She couldn't provide for herself and many times ended up in slavery and prostitution. Misogyny is a tough one because it is up to the subjective preferences of the person reading it. You have to ignore where it says "love your wife as yourself" and only focus on "women as a weaker vessel (Peter)." Don't forget the 2nd part of that verse in Peter though: grant her honor as a fellow heir of the grace of life.

I'm preempting this by saying I'm not the most religious person. Going by the bible he doesn't really "create" suffering. It was a perfect creation that was destroyed by man. We absolutely suffer, but a majority of that is caused by us. People lie, cheat, steal, kill, and more. This doesn't necessarily argue against a "loving God," it just proves the point there is something wrong with us. He allowed for us to have free will that causes suffering. So, in a sense he is allowing suffering by allowing free will. So when we say "why does God allow suffering," we need to look at ourselves. The bible is full of "don't do this or that will happen," then we do it anyway. My $0.02.

How are waffles/ pancakes sexist...women do absorb info quickly,are great at multitasking,can use both hemispheres of their brains at once. Men most likely act like waffles..we can only use one hemisphere of our brain at a time..so we probably do sort and lock down info into a certain category. Mens' brain are larger because men tend to be larger than women ( on average)

I'm not religious but here are some religious explanations: 1. Suffering is punishment for Original Sin (Adam and Eve) 2. Suffering is punishment for our present day sins 3. Suffering is caused by the Devil, not by God 4. Suffering improves our souls and prepares us for Heaven (see Hick's vale of soul- making) 5. Suffering on Earth pales into insignificance when compared to eternity in Heaven 6. "Suffering" is a test to see if we'll abandon God when the going gets tough ...As I said I don't believe these as I'm an atheist, but these are some common responses I've learned from academia. Look up "theodicies" or "solutions to the problem of evil for more info.

Hi, question: do you believe in God, or any kind of god? Just wondering, because if one doesn't believe in God, then where does one place the blame for suffering? As Dr Scott says- the only place to look is at ourselves, at humanity. I personally don't believe in a god who takes pleasure in suffering, but in God who suffered for us, who loves us so much that he offers us grace and mercy and who calls us to live a life of love and grace in a messed up world.

Don't disagree something needs to be done, but my question on the UK is how many guns were there before the ban? I ask because we're at the point here in the US where we have more guns than people. I don't know how many are illegal, but regardless I don't know exactly how effective a all out ban would be. Not to mention the chances of the 2A being overturned. In simple odds, the chance of any constitutional amendment being repealed would be roughly the same as a person living to 80 years old being struck by lightning during their lifetime (statistic I read). I'm definitely not against reforms, I just don't think it is as easy to fix the problem as people want to think.
