I call those drive-by compliments. Everyone, listen up, this is how you compliment someone when you have no expectations of a relationship or want to hit on them.

Those are my favorite compliments, when they come from a man that just wants to express just because. No desire for anything or intentions behind it, just a nice compliment. :)

I try to also only give drive by compliments about something specific that was a clear choice or effort on the part of the person being complimented: "I love how colorful and cheerful your dress is" "that is an excellent hat" or "that is an amazing cosplay". I also make a point of drive by compliments to men, because guess what, we like them too! (No criticism here of women who don't do this, as I understand there are reasons for not complementing men you don't know).

I had something similar happen but I was a lot older. I had my child at age 30 and gained a lot of weight. My boss at work joined the company 6 months after she was born and I still had most of the extra weight. 2 years later I lost a lot of it and he said to me that he could see how much weight I’d lost and that I looked amazing. All in a none pervy way, he was a dad of 2 who adored his wife and family. But his comment made me feel really good about the work I’d done to get back to being me.

My new condo was being painted last week. The painter came by for some touch ups while we were there and I complimented him on his lovely laundry scent. Lol. My mom was like “omg! You can’t tell a man something like that!” and I said “I absolutely can and will compliment anybody I want on anything I want”. 🤷🏼‍♀️

That is sadly true.. I hope you keep making compliments, even if sometimes you have to make it super obvious that there's no expectations. You can always add something like "Just wanted to say that. Have a nice day!" Or even "I have a girlfriend, but I just wanted to say your hair is fabulous." It might seem a bit on the nose, but it's a way forward were women can start to relax more :)

The best way to compliment a woman without it seeming sexual is to compliment something they had control over - I love your hair colour, your bag is so cute, that jacket really suits you, I love your necklace where did you get it? Avoid referring to physical features (other than hair) or any clothing item that might suggest you're checking out their a*s or boobs. Hopefully, your wife is not immature and won't object to those (some partners are going to object to any suggestion you've even seen someone of whatever gender you find attractive, that's a them problem, not a you problem). Most women will find those more genuine and less of a transactional process. You're still going to get some women who will be suspicious but that's likely a result of their past experiences and there's nothing you can do about that.

Why do you even need to tell a woman she looks beautiful? She probably don't care about your opinion anyway, so just let her be. BUT if you really need to give unwanted comments, say: that's a nice top, my WIFE would love that. Where did you buy that cute bag, I think my WIFE would love one for her birthday. Then you have compliment AND reason for compliment in the same sentence. Or else, just don't try to compliment strangers, keep it for friends and family.

See my other comment. I think it's great these questions are asked, the best way to move forward is communicating about expectations, boundaries, ways to be better/safer/happier with eachother. I'm so proud of generations old and young, so many people willing to work on a better world.

Honestly, just compliment & move on. You don't even have to leave, just don't be that guy that keeps hammering at a gal ("Whatchyo' name? Can I get them digits?")while she's making the "I'm smiling but secretly praying for the rapture so I can get away from this a*s basket" face >>😬 Seriously though, if you see a woman you think is attractive, there isn't anything wrong with a kind compliment, just don't make it weird. Learn to read body language because if a girl is making this face >>😬 you are creeping her the f**k out.

Unfortunately I don't think it will ever change. As long as there's a few guys out there who use a compliment as an aproach to harm women, we'll always be on the defensive. The problem is that we can't immediately tell what your intentions are and know if we guess wrong we could end up raped or dead. Or both.

Here's a tip: You can admire a person without saying anything to them about it. They don't have to hear what you think about them.
