Sure, mathematically it's very unlikely, but socially it makes a lot of sense. Half siblings because a parent abandoned one family and made another or divorce and estrangement, etc, will still have some foundational areas very similar. There is a good likelihood of same or close to same stories about common ancestors and places. The values and priorities they learn growing up, even vocabulary will have at least some things in common. These are not things you normally talk about when first dating, but it would be affecting how you interact with each other. Normally, family anecdotes are brought up in a general manner when a relationship is comfortable. She might say, that's funny, same kind of thing happened to my great aunt, but why would she think her partners grandmother IS her aunt. But anyway, as for law of large numbers, this is why I called myself a hopeless romantic as a teen. Sure, I believed in one true love, but the odds of finding that one person!?!

And no job security. Being poor is not a choice. Most parents actually do care for their kids, they will go without so their kids can go with. It's the same in my country - blame the parents because apparently they're spending all their money on booze, ciggies, and gambling machines. Wow that's a lot of money then. But in reality, it's the high cost of living - rent, food, transport etc.

Yep. The kids reply to one of the questions that his Dad is only semi around pretty much says it all. He doesn't care to raise the kids, he doesn't want to be spending time looking after them. OP does not take out his anger on the new wife and her baby. He just does not pick up a parental role. "Taking out anger" would mean some form of abusive behavior (foul talk, agression, etc.) The teenager boy is only not friendly to the adult WHO ENTERED THIS SITUATION KNOWINGLY. Moreover, she decided to bring a new life (for which only she and her husband are responsible) into this situation.

That seems to be the more obvious conclusion, he did it when his wife was immobile (hospice) and he's absent again when his wife is immobile (pre/postpartum). Not only caring for two younger siblings, but caring for them through the death of their mother, who he also cared for, and them all having to get through that trauma on their own. On top of that, stepmom is pretending dad didn't do anything wrong and is blaming him for them not all acting like one big happy family. Even without the issue of parentification, it's a massive difference between looking after a kid who was about 9 (when the mother died) versus a 3 month old baby. No need to change s****y diapers, the kids can talk rather than just scream, and you're less likely to accidentally kill a 9 year old if you're distracted for a few minutes...

Or even older siblings who willingly involve themselves without any pressure because they've never been parentified and enjoy being older siblings. It makes a huge difference if you've been forced to step up for a dying mom and a negligent father or being a part of a healthy, happy family where the parents do the heavy lifting and the older children help a bit.

I used to be a professional nanny, but I live in a somewhat wealthy area so people were usually willing to pay my rate. If they weren't I never worked for them. I had excellent references and was always in high demand, so I didn't need to. (I realize that I was lucky. There are many foreign women who get taken advantage of when it comes to home/child care because they are in desperate situations) I The one family I was with for several years treated me like a member of the family and spoiled me with bonuses and healthcare. Trust me, you REALLY don't want to cheap out on child care. I would see those "cheap" nannies at the park/playground with kids and they were either looking at their phone or sleeping while the children they were "watching" ran wild or did crazy dangerous stuff. I was never more than arm's length away from "my" kid and it was horrifying to me. I once had to wake another nanny up in the library because the BABY she was watching was crawling around ripping books off the shelves - while she slept in a chair, oblivious to everything. It blows my mind that parents put their kids in situations like that because they're cheapskates.

You probably shouldn't assume that a person in their early 20s knows everything. It's normal to have kids, at that age, and when people pressure people to get married and have kids, they aren't always fully aware how expensive, time consuming, and demanding it can be. Not to mention, depending where you live , there's not a lot of safety nets. I also don't think people are always in perfect situations. Partners die. Relationships fall apart. Family isn't there to help. Jobs fall through. Some parents are awful. Some are just struggling and expecting perfection from life is ridiculous. (Still, pay your child care worker, but maybe also don't be so harsh on parents.)
