I worked for an insurance company. We had six weeks of training! Six weeks. I learned all about insurance law etc etc and had to pass tests. Once on the job it was 'you don't need to follow a script - but here is a list of 20 things you need to say. And if you aren't taking 50 calls a day you will see that reflected in your pay. And we will listen to your calls to ensure you make the points on the list'. I stuck it for a year. It was the worst job ever. I had to work in a bar until 2/3/4am at the weekend to supplement my income. Nastiest job ever.

Everything is about trying to keep the family together. And we are so badly represented by the media, and especially in films that get celebrated by the arts community. Yh and was dismissed by the 'them' because she was beautiful to look at. Her brilliance, her discoveries in the realms of physics and maths. Her farsighted belief in technology. Her scientific academic precision coupled with her practical skills circuit boarding, fastidious tiny welding to ensure electricity would easily find the next necessary circuit board. Full on builder of the first analogue computer. The First of all the computers can be found in the heads of those trying to defeat terrible corruption and eventually war. And Hedy was accepted by those men as brainy. And they wanted to know what she thought. They couldn't have cared less about her gender - no more than they would a person's sexual preference. I love scientists like that. To me Hedy Lamarr is the embodiment of some who is SO clever they are clever at everything they do.

We lived on an RAF married quarters estate. Housing was great but once built much forgotten. The twin tub was quite the thing. It lived in, i suppose what you would now call a utility except the utility had no plumbing or electric. So it got pulled out once a week with much exacting of the rubber tubes. The washing bit was, well that thing that strangled 70's nylon. You are so right that the spinner was the major plus and all got hung in the garden on a line with a stick to hold the line up that had a huge toe poke, to stop the laundry from hitting the grass. And the clothes horse in the house 'for the delicates'. My best memory of that twin tub is that it had a huge formica lid. It was heavy and solid. And my cousins and I decided it would make a great sled to attack snow over the heath. So we did. The lid met it's end and so did nearly all of us. I clearly remember adults pouring whisky into their tea. And we still didn't learn our lesson. But that is a tale for another day.

As someone who works in customer service, I agree with this. I get yelled at on the daily by customers. My co-workers and upper management are awesome, there's no pressure to more productive. I get berated and yelled at on the regular by people who may be simply having a bad day. The kicker is...I have to sit and take it with a smile on my face. We should get to throat punch at least one customer a day.

CPS Investigators. Allow me to lay the rumors to bed. First, CPS does not *steal* or *kidnap* children. If you were unfortunate enough to have your child removed from your care, take responsibility for your own f**k ups and self reflect. Rest assured, the CPS worker did not *want* to remove your child, so if yours got removed, you gave them no other option. second, CPS does not get a bonus for every child they bring in to custody (and they don't get extra for removing children of color). Believe me, they do not get paid enough to do their job as it is, let alone any bonuses. And where would this money come from? The government barely has the funding to pay/reimburse foster parents for taking in kids. Hell, the whole child welfare system as a whole barely has the funding across the board to care for these kids. Where are bonuses supposed to come from? Third, there are no "quotas" on how many kids are removed. No nationwide adoption conspiracy to take children from their homes. Seriously, no social worker/CPS investigator goes into their work each day wanting to take kids from their homes. None. No power trips (cause that power isn't even in their hands, it's up to a dam judge). Nothing. It's a sad day for everybody when this happens. Sad for the families, sad for the kids, and sad for social worker too.
