Parental leave is an unpaid break from work offered to new parents to look after their children. The parental leave can be up to three years, and the time can be split between the two parents. A parent can decide to not work at all or only work part-time (up to 30 hours a week). Even though parental leave is an unpaid break, new parents can apply for parental allowance (Elterngeld). If you apply to basic parental allowance, you can expect to receive between 300 and 1.800 euros per month. As a rule, it is 65% of your net income before giving birth. If you apply to parental allowance plus, you can expect to receive between 150 and 900 euros per month. The amount of parental allowance plus is limited to half of what you would theoretically receive as basic parental allowance.

Spell check doesn't always work for people with dyslexia - I know that from my brother. Spell check has to sort out what you mean and it can be miles out, particularly if the first one or two letters are wrong. Then if there are several words suggested by spellcheck the dyslexic person has to know which one to pick - and they can be miles out. He struggles. I proof read a lot of his work and most of the time it's fine but sometimes there is one weirdly spelt word that slips through. He told me once about making lots of deacons. He meant decisions but spellcheck picked the word and he didn't notice. Honestly, it's harder than a lot of people realised and I often wish that 'Grammar Nazis' were more understanding. He feels stupid when people pick holes in his work, it damages his confidence, and he's actually very smart.

Maybe it's a dyslexic wedding planner? I'm married to a dyslexic person so can see how it could happen. Spell check doesn't help unfortunately. The point is that the rules are mostly ridiculous.

Thanks for the link Caroline. Glad DIL was okay in the end about it but it still doesn't cut it for me. Who would ever pick a wedding dress to attend someone else's wedding? There would have been far cheaper and better bargains in normal smart clothing. A suit or dress. Why even be looking at wedding dresses? Even if it all turns out okay and the MIL is embarrassed now it's as weird as fu-ck a thing to do - and I really did grow up in poverty. I didn't even buy a wedding dress for my own wedding as I felt them to be too expensive, even the bargains, not for something I would wear once. I simply couldn't rationalise it in my own head. Instead I bought a beautiful but special dress that I could wear again and have. If MIL was so frugal isn't that more likely to fit that characteristic? I get the bargain thing and being extremely careful with money. Seems to me that she absolutely wanted to wear a wedding dress and the rest is a lot of self justifying nonsense.

Good bedding is amazing. I always buy good quality pillows. Anyone tried mulberry silk-filled pillows? AMAZING! I don't mean the pillow case, the actual pillow. Also good quality linens. Definitely worth buying the best you can afford.

People end up with random bags with small amounts in the bottom that get shoved to the back of the cupboard (that can't just be me surely???) so decanting things into containers helps to stop that.

Poor Timmy - I'm sure you can guess the reason why it went down badly is because there ARE people who do that. Though I don't personally think it's just men.
