How much do you know about your car? Are you someone who loves to change your own oil, change your own tires and spend your weekends polishing its body until it is spotless? Or does the extent of your car knowledge only include how to put gas in the tank and how to drive around? Somehow, many of us can manage to get by knowing the absolute minimum about the vehicles that we use every day because we rely on the experts at an auto shop. But no matter how polite they are to our faces, those experts might be laughing at our incompetence the second we’re out the door and sharing photos of our precious vehicles online…

We’ve gone through the Just Rolled Into the Shop subreddit to find some of the most hilarious and ridiculous examples of things mechanics deal with every single day, so you too can appreciate what goes on in the mysterious world of an auto shop. Some of these posts will require a basic understanding of cars to know what is happening, but if you are an auto enthusiast, you'll be sure to get a kick out of some of these hopelessly confused drivers. Enjoy this list that will hopefully give you a greater appreciation for your mechanic, and be sure to upvote all of the pictures of situations that you would not have believed without seeing proof. Then if you’re interested in even more of these wild pics from auto shops, be sure to check out Bored Panda’s previous publications on this same subreddit here and here.

Duke_Meridian Report

Everyone’s idea of how much maintenance is required to take care of a car is different. Some people are fine with a car wash every now and then, filling up the tank when needed and an oil change when that dreaded light indicates that “service is required”. On the other hand, some people inspect every inch of their vehicles and work hard to keep them in pristine condition. They take pride in keeping the exterior looking sparkling and the internal health in tip top shape as well. But regardless of how well you treat your car, unless you yourself are a mechanic, you’re going to have to see one eventually.

Similarly to how doctors have horror stories of injuries you would have to see to believe, every mechanic can tell their fair share of stories about the stupidest things people have done to their vehicles. To provide a place where mechanics can share these crazy stories and laugh about the incompetence of the average driver, the Just Rolled Into the Shop subreddit was born. The page, which has 1.8 million members at the moment, states that it is “for those absolutely stupid things that you see people bring, roll, or toss into your place of business and the people that bring them in”. And clearly, there are infinite examples of those...

I Got $10 Off My Oil Change Because I "Fulfilled The Destiny" Of The Tech Who Had To Report My Mileage

Pinfari13 Report

Cars are one thing that most of us can get through life knowing very little about. It would definitely be beneficial to understand the inner workings of our vehicles, and it could even save us some money if we could solve some of our cars' issues at home. But the fact is that it takes effort to learn about them. There is no “auto shop” requirement in school, but that's why the experts exist. So we don’t ever have to repair our cars ourselves.

But according to one study of 2,000 Americans, many people know an embarrassingly small amount about their vehicles. Well, that’s not necessarily true. They know something, but a quarter of them admitted knowing that their cars are in need of a repair yet they continue to take the risk of driving them every day. But shockingly, far more people have something wrong with their cars that they might not have even been aware of. 68% of the study participants’ cars had at least one thing wrong with them, and 36% of the participants did not know the first thing about changing a tire.

kambesama Report

There are plenty of basic car care routines that many of the participants of this study did not know, from half of them not being confident that they could change their car's oil to one third of them not knowing which oil their car requires in the first place. Even having to jump their vehicle’s battery would be a difficult task for a quarter of Americans, if their battery were to die. And about 20% of them could not confidently check the tire pressure on their car.

What’s hiding underneath the hood is a mystery to many Americans, with less than half of them being able to locate their car’s engine in an image. But despite their lack of understanding of their vehicles, many people still don’t feel comfortable dealing with a mechanic. Perhaps it is due to embarassment from not knowing how to take care of their cars, but 54% of Americans admit they are intimidated by mechanics. After seeing this list though, I don't blame them. For all they know, they could be being mocked online for having snow under their car's hood or going years without changing their air filters!

A common fear when taking your car to a mechanic is that you might be paying way too much money. How is it that any time you pop in for a simple oil change or tire rotation the mechanic mysteriously finds 5 other things that must be done immediately or the car will put you in immense danger the second you drive off the lot? You got to the auto shop just fine, so it does not seem likely that getting home will be a problem. It can be difficult to know whether a repair is actually necessary or if the mechanic is trying to pull a fast one on you, so we consulted BlueToro’s blog to find out some of the most common ways sketchy mechanics try to overcharge their customers.

According to BlueToro, one practice some shady mechanics deploy is claiming that they replaced a part or performed a certain job, and charging for it, but never actually doing it. “It’s not uncommon for us to tend to a basic car service for a new customer where a major service was said to have been performed by their previous mechanic and yet the customer complains of a number of problems that simply shouldn’t be there if the car was serviced well,” BlueToro explains. “Usually it’s because the parts that were charged were not actually replaced.”

So what happened here was, we had a really bad blizzard and customer came in saying that all of their lights were on and the car drove horrible (no heat especially) and when we popped the hood we see this terrific mess of snow like wtf ?? Customer never popped the hood, it was left outside during the storm so looks like it was all the wind that absolutely piled up. And it was PACKED. left it to thaw overnight. Ran normal after everything was dry, no problems since.. a mystery to this day maybe they really did leave the hood open lol idk man

Another practice that certain mechanics will try to get away with is bumping up scheduled part replacements. For example, if a part needs to be replaced every 100,000 miles, some mechanics will tell a customer that it is time to be replaced when they’ve only driven 80,000 miles. Over time, this can lead to many unnecessary repairs and your auto shop bills can be through the roof. “Ultimately, these mechanics are not thinking about you as a customer for the long term, they’re just trying to make the most out of every service,” BlueToro explains.

I leave the front passenger side seat belt buckled in all the time because there's a weight sensor over there. If I dump my groceries/work stuff/whatever in the passenger seat because I'm too lazy to open the back, and it's juuuuuust heavy enough, then I have to put up with the stupid beeping.

These are the front seats of a car and it appears that *both* seat belts are buckled in. So regardless of if it's a car from a left-driving or right-driving country, the *driver seat* is buckled in in this photo. No excuse for that!

It's not that seatbelts are uncomfortable or inconvenient. It's that approximately 75 million Americans feel they have so little control over their lives that feel compelled to assert themselves up to and including the point of killing themselves and the people they love. The saddest thing about anger combined with ignorance is that people usually take it on themselves, either directly, or by supporting their oppressors in hopes of becoming one of them.

my son does this and it drives me crazy. on valentine's day 1997 (he was a senior in high school) he and his friend got into an accident where the gravel road caused his tires to break from the road and he slammed into a tree. he had a seatbelt on but still had broken the steering wheel with his face causing a broken nose and knocking out his teeth. there was no air bag. his friend also had the seatbelt but only knocked out from dash. both covered with blood. he said it took him over 10 minutes to get the belt to release for himself and never got his friend's belt off. so, his logic is that if i ever in another accident i won't have to struggle to get out of the belt. my commentary on that is right - because you will ejected from the car.

I drove forty-foot buses. The manufacture changed the seat belts. You have a steering wheel the size of a tire. So you come to an intersection and you have to lean way forward to check traffic. Seatbelt locks up on you like getting whiplash. It took a year and a half and a petition to get the company to do anything. Finally they got a clip to help, But I am left with a permanent shoulder injury.

Likely done to drive belt-less while not having to listen to the seatbelt chime until buckled. Or could be the driver is too large for the belt and prefers not to hear the chime. But I agree, if possible, seatbelts should be worn.

Had a few friends who used to do this back when seat belts became mandatory in the 90s. Couple years later, one of them had a minor fender bender, broke her nose and front teeth on the steering wheel. Insurance initially paid her for medicals and damages. Months later, the insuring company threatened to sue her to recover expenses, since the counterpart had contested that according to the police report she was not wearing seat belts correctly. She had to pay back thousands of Euro, and pay for an attorney on top. Immediately a lot of our common friends started wearing seat belts.

Not wearing a mask is not an apt comparison because it affects other people. The likelihood of you hurting someone else because you weren't wearing a seat belt when compared to the overall # of accidents is virtually zero. They passed the law to force you to wear them right around the time I started driving. I've always worn them but it has always ticked me off that local towns would use it as a money making scheme. It was a secondary offense, so they would lie about a taillight being out or something just to pull you over for the seat belt violation. They DGAF whether it helped or hurt you in an accident, they just wanted the money.

Here in UK if a car has its annual safety check they will click all the seatbelts to ensure they work and rarely undo them before returning the car. Doesn't explain the driver's belt being clicked though.

I admit to having done that. Hear me out! When you are in the forsestry-business, you sometimes drive around forest-roads with gravel and such, basically at walking-speed. Every few meters, yoz need to hop out, do sime measuring, go back in. A beeping seatbelt is annoying as hell! But aa soon as you hit a real road with traffic, the belt goes where it belongs. That said: no way is this a car of someone like that! Wayyyyy to clean and orderly

My car has an intermittent fault with the sensor in the front passenger seat that should detect when someone is sitting there, and it sounds an alert if it thinks there's someone who hasn't buckled their belt. Our mechanic has tried to track it down but it does not replicate reliably, so I just plug the belt in to shut the damn noise up. For the record, I am adamant about anybody actually riding in the car wearing their belt, it is absolutely non-negotiable!

In the '70s, my dad's first trip after buying a new car was to his mechanic, to get the seat belt buzzer disconnected. This was after he'd once stopped short and smashed my sister's head into the dashboard, and dumped me out a door on a left turn. And when I was a baby, Mom and Dad took the middle seat out of their Microbus so I could ride around in a playpen. If you didn't want kids, you could have just not had us!

I do this to the passenger seat when my dog is in the car, because she likes to sometimes sit in the front (where she doesn't get carsick) and sometimes in the back seat so she can sleep. When she sits in the front, the passenger seat belt alarm starts going off and will not stop. Also, ironically, police officers often do this, so they can quickly get out of the car, in certain situations.

It can also serve other people lives. When I worked in the ER we had an family come in from an MVA. Iit wasn't Avery bad one either, another car t bones the back end of their car at about 35mph. The parents and their friend were not wearing seatbelts. The mom slammed her head into the window so hard she had permanent brain damage, and their 4 year old was killed by their friend flying into to them crushing them into the door and window (this was before booster seats for that age. The majority of seatbelts are extremely uncomfortable for women. I am constantly readjusting mine while buckled in, which means my hand is not on the wheel at that moment. In general, I wear it under my arm, as this provides a better angle in terms of my breasts and my lungs. But I know other women who do like the photo.

Hmmm, am i missing something? Why does this indicate they don’t wear belts? I mean it’s as simple as not doing it up if that’s what you want, why would someone do it up and then sit on it? The buckle would dig into your side because the belt would pull. Mine are often like this especially in the back seat and mechanics do this too when I do a Warrant of Fitness for the car, you have to show the webbing of the seatbelt is safe, and it saves them a minute if you already have some pulled out - I always get the car back like this if I haven’t done it myself. It also stops the “no seatbelt” warning going off if I have shopping etc. It doesn’t mean I don’t wear a seatbelt, I always do and won’t drive until my passengers are belted in. This is just helpful and tidy. ETA - ok I see other comments saying they see people do this, so I guess people are dumb.

They said because she wasn't in her seat belt and the impact knocked her into the foot well that saved her life. This is literally the only story out of hundreds of accidents where I heard the belt was a hindrance. Don't play those odds people, wear your belt

Id think these people just crave the thrill of being launched right trough the window like a glass studded meat missile and possibly taking a random bystander out if they ever get into an accident.

After my gallbladder got removed, I had problems with everything and anything touching me n the area it happened in. So, then, I didn't use a seatbelt for a month or so, but afterwards, of course, I started using it again. Always feels off to not use one anyway...

It also prevents the seatbelt from getting hot in the summer and burning your hand.

Ha ha! We always use our seatbelts except when in the Kruger National Park. Since we only drive at about 15-20 km/hr there so as not to miss any interesting birds or predators and need to maneuver around in the seat when taking photos or trying to ID a far-flying raptor through binoculars we go without. Used to be, we just did not put seatbelts on, but about three cars ago the cars started screaming when you do that, so this pictured here is the solution. Will never do this on city or open roads though.

Guy, who ended up getting ejected in the accident, wore his seatbelt in the passenger side by looping his arm through it just to fool the cops. Well...his arm caught tight and slowed his speed preventing fracture of his C-spine and skull, but the force ripped his arm off.

As a former cabdriver, I knew colleagues who did this. For them it was a way to get in and out of the car quicker and not have the alarm go off while driving. Now, in my opinion, it's Stupidity with a capital S. My ex had a kid (a real piece of work) that refused to put his seatbelt on, asked once, asked twice, so when the next curb came he went tumbling in the backseat... and he put on the seatbelt. Other time they were both in the front seat, refusing to at least put the seatbelt on. I was ordered to shut up and drive as it was just a short drive from where we were to home. Asked again, got the same reply, shut up and drive, nothing's going to happen. So... I hit the brakes just hard enough for them to notice that there is not much speed needed to get into trouble... Got a sh*tload of c**p for doing that, but... they put the seatbelt on. Can't really say that I miss either one of them XD

Expect when you go through the windshield and into traffic it can cause secondary accidents.

I am one of these people. Lol. Not against seat belts at all but while I was pregnant I got in the habit of only wearing the shoulder strap. I still do it. I leave it buckled, get in, and just pull the strap over. Y'all be nice to me.

Because many people have had encounters with mechanics that they were not able to trust, ABC News actually interviewed one who anonymously agreed to spill the beans on what it’s like to work in an auto shop. “Joe”, as ABC refers to him, explained that most mechanics actually are honest, but there is often pressure from overhead to perform unnecessary work to increase profit margins. “The shop has to stay in business,” Joe said. “There are pressures to do things that maybe you wouldn’t do normally. I’m ashamed a bit to admit it, but when your boss tells you ... 'Either you do it here or the door’s right there,' what are you going to do?”

Mechanics even have terminology for some of their more questionable practices, including “gravy work”. This is when a shop worker bills a customer for more time than a repair actually requires. “Most shops will charge you an hour and a half to two hours to turn the rotors and put pads on it,” Joe explained. “If you’re good and got good equipment, you can do it in 20 or 30 minutes… That’s gravy.” Another practice that I’m sure we have all suspected before was confirmed by Joe. “An $18 oil change -- well, they lose money on that,” he said. “The idea is to get you in so they can sell you the coolant flushes, trans flushes, power steering flushes. ... That’s where the money is.”

Giuseppe Mendola, another seasoned mechanic and owner of AutoTech Diagnostic in College Point, New York, also told ABC that it’s important for car owners to just read the manual any time their car has an issue. The more drivers understand about their vehicles, the less likely they will be to get ripped off. “People don’t read the owner’s manual. They don’t know how to open the hood half the time,” Mendola noted. “I honestly don’t understand what they expect out of the car if they don’t know anything about it.”

Also, you could try not cutting open your tire. An actual way to check, look for the serial number, and find the last 4 digits of the number. The first 2 of the final 4 is the number of weeks into the year, and the last 2 (if made after the year 2000) are the last 2 digits of the year the tire was manufactured.

When you consider the wages of an auto worker (thanks to the teamsters) and the ridiculous ways they draw pay even when they're not working, you will then understand why a car costs at least 5x what it should. Pay them a realistic wage and no work, no pay and kick the damned unions out of the country and see how fast nearly everyone will be able to afford a new car. It will help too to can all the stupid space age c**p and put normal controls and accessories back in a car. Simple, if it's illegal to talk or text while driving then you have no business using a touch screen computer to control every function in the car.

Long long time ago my sister had some much needed work done to car. Mechanic was so shocked by the sight of her rotor that he hung it on his "wall of shame" 😆😆 still to this day give her s**t about it

This is ironic because for some reason I've been seeing an increasing number of ATVs and UTVs with tracks like this sitting in shop lots lately.

From Reddit OP ]Abazoreee[S] 5 points 6 months ago Wow I've been at work all day and haven't been able to look at reddit really but HOLY S**T the appreciation you guys have for my dad's work means a lot to me. To him it's no big deal and (evidently) to a lot of people it isn't a big deal, but I haven't seen much like this on here and thought people would be interested. Thank you everyone for the awards! This is my first post ever to get more than 100 up votes and I'm very stoked. To answer some of the questions, this was done in a insured shop with proper procedures to make a safe repair, every car that comes through has a liability on it, if someone (God forbid) was to get injured in the car, not only would my dad be held liable but also the shop and insurer. This was all done with all parties involved being known for the work that was going to happen, this happens in many poor countries because labor is cheap, parts are cheap, and cars are not.

City driving causes heavy wear on the brake pedal pad. Dealers change those pads on high mileage vehicles so potential customers think it's highway driven.

44.4 and 60? not very accurate. According to my calculator, 44.4f = 6 C which is really cold. And 60 F is 15, which is also cold. Seems fine to me - unless that 444 is four-hundred and 44, or 228 celcius... in which case the plastic would all be melted. So I'm guessing their temperature guages are just buggered.

In an attempt to increase airflow to the engine and theoretically more power, this fool drilled holes after the air filter so the engine is sucking in unfiltered air. Any particulates can be admitted into the combustion chamber and cause damage. Also, it' sucking in the hot air from the engine compartment instead of the cooler air beneath the enhine, so it will actually make less hp.

Connecting rod not a push rod. Probably a powdered metal rod with a cracked cap. When they crack the cap off it leaves a very fine seam.
