The world around us is endlessly fascinating. Granted, some things are more interesting than others and might blow our minds. But mildly interesting facts have made a name for themselves as the favorites of the internet. They're not about anything groundbreaking, but they're interesting still.

For example, did you know a banana is technically a berry? I bet you can find this and similar mildly interesting facts on the subreddit dedicated to sharing pictures of just them. This list is for the times you don't want to be too shocked or fascinated. Some mild excitement will do.

Same. My vet clinic always has half a dozen missing cat posters. It makes me mad because we all know there are coyotes in our areas.

Years ago one of our neighbours put up posters and FB posts about her lost senior cat. Never talked to these people (not next door neighbours, few flats over), never even seen them before. But I was instantly invested and felt so sorry for that old chap missing. I followed the story on FB and kept putting back the posters when they fell off. About 6 months later Jasper was found very far from home, trying to survive at some landfill. For years, even after moving, I kept following this lady on FB just so I can see an occasional update on how happy Jasper was with his renewed life, until eventually he passed away. Yes, updates are important :)

please keep your cats indoors, people. i know accidents happen, and of course if you're with them and supervising they can be outside, but there are so many bad things that could happen to them unsupervised :(

This is cool. You could take the poster down, and leave people wondering, but letting folks know (for those who care) is thoughtful, and will hopefully stop people from calling

HURRAY for Harold and family!! Been there / done that. When I was a sitter years back, one of two cats (14 yo) wandered off, was gone 2 mos -- we plastered signs everywhere, offered a hefty $1000 reward. He was found 6 miles away in the next town by a veterinary staffer. She did not accept the reward. (Yes he was chipped and wore an identifying collar.) That was his last hurrah! Bless his heart. SO many tears on both ends of his adventure. 🐾🐾

They will do this if you care for them correctly. Gotta put a little fertilizer in their spray bottle once in awhile. I have a strand of Spanish moss (in NC) that is going strong 6 years after I picked it up off the ground in Louisiana at a rest area.

Lol. I sharpen knives and rarely do it for family anymore. Honestly most peoples knives are butter knife dull and have been for years. I always return them sharp and warn that they are very sharp and show them and they always end up cutting themselves. Yes sharp knives are safer but people used to dull knives are dangerous with sharp ones.

We had 2 cats. A void with arthritis and a grey tabby. Tabby would lay in front of the fireplace until it felt like her fur would catch fire or under a blanket tent on the couch. Arthritic void slept on the wood and ceramic coffee table. Cats are weird and make no sense sometimes. Edit to add they were brother and sister, same mom. Mom layed wherever her fat a$& would fit.

One of the mildly interesting pics from the group is the bell pepper with a bunch of baby peppers inside it. It's not unusual for peppers to have little carbon copies inside them. That's called "internal proliferation." This usually happens inside ripe or overripe bell peppers but is most prominent in the ones that have been picked unripe and ripened artificially with ethylene gas.

The baby pepper is edible and should taste the same as its mama. And peppers aren't the only victims of internal proliferation. This can happen to other fruits and vegetables as well, such as tomatoes, eggplants, oranges, and many others.

How about that picture of the gorgeous Atlas moth? They're one of the biggest insects in the world, their wingspan stretching to 27 centimeters (nine inches) across. Their caterpillars are very hungry (probably due to their size) and spend almost their every waking second eating, but the moths themselves don't feed at all after emerging from the cocoon.

Not everywhere is as savage as the USA. There are towns in several places, especially a famous one in Japan, where deer live freely among people.

Most Americans don’t realize that herds in the US are severely overpopulated due to a lack of predators. The herds have a harder time finding adequate resources in the winter and are far more prone to diseases, especially wasting diseases. They no longer fear humans because they see as a food source (pet food, gardens, trash).

This is common where I was born in southern Alberta. Sadly the tourists have conditioned the deer to come near humans for food. This inevitably ends in a public safety culling as they are frequently infested with ticks. And larger deer can become aggressive if they come up to people and don't get fed

Cats might undergo a change in the color of their fur as they grow into adulthood, did you know that? And no, it's not because they're getting old and grey. Some breeds, like the Himalayan, Siamese, and Burmese might have a genetic mutation that makes their fur darken in the winter months when there is less sun exposure.

I get mine free at planned parenthood. I live in California. I'm still surprised they've been shut down across the US. You get a years supply up front. I actually take it for unbearable pain over pregnancy anything. It's to help me function during my time of the month. I mean the clinic is good for a lot of reasons 🤷 everyone is like no abortions so shut them down and everyone else can suffer too. They test me for cancer. Not that I could afford cancer treatment anyhow if I had it. But for a person without insurance it's nice to go and get free birth control that helps me not be bed ridden for 5 days a month. It's like.. well, at least I have this.

A lot of people tend to forget or not care that PP does so much more than just abortions. So many families depend on them for things like cancer screenings and medications.

Eek! Hormonal birth control can be amazing but it can also have dome pretty serious side effects. I think a consultation should be required! I had a blood clot from my Dianette (no other risk factors so that was their assumption), and I lost a friend to pulmonary embolism as a result of her taking it. It’s been banned now. But even so, it can give you terrible migraines and depression. It’s important to get advice about the right pill for you.

Doing some research, I found that it is a low dose progestin only pill. No estrogen, which is more likely to cause problems. The FDA concluded the pill poses even less risks than some other OTC d***s available. They insist on scrupulous instructions and warnings on packaging as a condition of approval.

My neurologist took me off the pill and had me get an IUD because of my migraines with aura. They showed up on an MRI. He said it increased my risk for stroke. And I’ve never been happier and I rarely get migraines. So yes, it is still important to see a doctor. But it’s nice it’s available. But birth control is free if you have health insurance thanks to Obama! tRump and Elon are trying to get rid of that.

This person found a tiny pearl in an oyster they were eating. Experts estimate that the chances of that happening are one in 10,000. And even if you find a pearl in your dinner the next time you eat a mollusk, it's unlikely it'll have any monetary value. Most pearls people have found in food are too tiny to be worth a fortune.

If someone has a heart attack, stroke, etc. they can die at any job. It doesn't specify that the death was work related, just that they died at work. They very well could have had a work related death too, as there are plenty of ways you can die at an airport by working there.

From what I've read when this pic has come up before this is likely installed by home owner association or other non-regulatory body, which makes me think it would have many people not stopping, and then becoming lax with actual stop signs, which would create more problems than it stops.

Part of the filter in the mouth of baleen whales. They use the hair of the baleen to filter feed - the krill get stuck in the hair for eating as the water is pushed out.

The Mildly Interesting subreddit also sees some disasters from time to time, like this leaking Himalayan salt lamp. It's actually pretty normal for these lamps to leak water. Salt lamps draw moisture from the air, and if they're in very humid environments, they will eventually leak. In some cases, a leaking Himalayan salt lamp is a sign of authenticity!

This person had their house burn down, but the American cheese in the fridge, apparently, made it out just fine. People like to say that it's because of plastic or some mysterious chemicals in it, but Kraft claimed it's because their cheese only melts at lower temperatures. That's because of the emulsifiers which they use to bind the proteins and the fat in the cheese.

These are quite necessary if you fursuit at a convention (or cosplay at regular SF conventions.) A lot of people think that giving a cute character a hug is no problem and that everyone in costume should be photographed on sight. This can definitely cause probems in a fursuit as you usually only have a couple widely spaces mesh holes for visibility.

Not necessarily. I look worse than the person on the pic. I drink around 4 liters of tea every day, but I have Ehlers-Taboos-Syndrome which makes my skin very soft but sensible and it tears easily. Roughly 1 out of 5000 people have this condition, so its not very popular, but nor rare either.

It wouldn't take a bright person long to recognize these were not bare feet. The average American soldier in Vietnam weighed ~155lbs and would have longer strides and sink deeper into the soil than a Viet Cong weighing ~120lbs. And, depending on the sponginess of the soil, the boot edges would make an imprint. One of those "looked good on paper" ideas.

We have several as well: young cheese requires a different shaped slicer compared to old cheese and we also have different slicers for thickness, depending on what meal the slices will be used for. Yes, I’m Dutch 😂

And how many types of cheeses do they have in cold storage? You need a different slicer for each type of cheese, so you don't cross contaminate.

A word of caution for people with pets. Do NOT get a salt lamp. They may start licking it and since it makes them thirsty they keep doing it until they acquire salt toxicity.

Sodium chloride is hygroscopic - so, it'll absorb water when it can. If you don't keep your salt lamp dry, it'll go like the one pictured. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sodium_chloride

Well they give off a beautiful warm glow, as they're lit from below from a very small wattage bulb. I have one that has a hollow carved in it that takes a votive candle. And supposedly... "Salt lamps purify the air by attracting water molecules and absorbing them, along with any other contaminants the water molecules may be carrying, into the salt crystal. As the lamp heats up when it's on, the same water is thought to evaporate back into the surrounding environment without all the contaminants.May 8, 2024" So there you go!

This is a temporary derail. These are used when they have to do some work on the track, and don't want errant cars or trains running over that section. If you look further down, you can see another one on the other rail. Something likely broke between those two derails and they're having to fix it.

It happened in Ohio May 2001 so ithe investigation was quickly overshadowed by 9/11 around here. But I remember the movie Unstoppable with Denzel Washington because I watch anything Denzel. So now I gotta watch that movie since I’ve come out of the rabbit hole and Wiki wonderland.

The antler deformity is called Cactus Buck and is caused by low testosterone. However, it a side effect of multiple causes. In this instance, the tumour on the right front leg is more telling and likely a sign of what has caused Cactus Buck. a line means what poison in the bite, is going through the blood vein, because if it goes to the chest, since it was a Mosquito it looks like it was just an allergic reaction but you can get lymphangitis from it, red or dark streaks from the bite go to the lymph glands

I actually know this one! The main purpose is storage when not in use, the stands stack really well if you put the middle triangle into the triangle of the next stand, if that makes sense :)

It was a popcorn kernel I had extracted from my ear when I was a kid. I refused to keep still when my parents tried to get it out, so they took me to the doctor who had to put me under to retrieve it. Probably cost a small fortune even back then. Sorry mom and dad!

My daughter had tubs in her ears a 1 year of age. They fell out when she was almost 3. When she was five, they did a hearing test at school and said the hearing in her right ear was less than the left. We took her to the doctor and my lovely daughter had some how managed to get a popcorn kernel stuck in the hole where the tubs were. I still don't know how she did that one!!

TIL *Yes, you can put a teaspoon in the microwave if it's in a glass and at least 2 centimeters from the walls. However, you should generally avoid putting metal in the microwave because it can cause sparks, overheating, and other issues *

The liquid on the inside of the glass can become hotter than 100°C while being "packed in" with cooled liquid, When you remove it it'll turn to vapor instantly and "exploding" in your face. Leaving a spoon in will distribute the heat more evenly. Must be a solid piece of metal, though.

Nominal weights on prepacked items are quite often quite a lot lower than the actual weight, although not usually to this extent. One local supermarket to me often sells chicken breasts or whole chickens as 'per item' with a standard weight. I bought two 240g packs last week, one of them weighed in at 285g, the other at 330g on my kitchen scales.

We sell cheese by 500g. If more than 500 when we cut we don't care, we just packed it. And the "end piece" is usually far more than 500. Small piece that's 262g will not sell (by experience) so we don't bother. Last piece 790g? It will make a customer happy.
