Nobody’s perfect, and everyone has knowledge blind spots. It’s healthy to recognize your shortcomings and be able to laugh at them. Sometimes, that means chuckling at yourself after you get called out online for saying something, well… less than smart.

Bored Panda has collected some of the funniest moments when Europeans gently roasted Americans for writing bizarre comments online, from all over the internet. Scroll down to see some of the most cringy insights and witty takedowns.

Just keep in mind that none of this is meant to promote meanness. It’s all for the sake of lighthearted humor. We all say dumb things from time to time, no matter where we’re from.

Learning to respect other cultures doesn’t happen overnight. It requires dedication, open-mindedness, and a willingness to acknowledge your own biases and knowledge blind spots. Traveling abroad, doing research about other countries’ histories, and talking to people from different backgrounds and with different perspectives can help broaden your mind. As a rule of thumb, if you can recognize that you’ve said some dumb things in the past, it shows that you’re maturing and that your self-awareness is growing

When traveling, it’s not enough to put on a silly tourist hat, grab your camera, and enjoy the sights. It’s best to go abroad with empathy and curiosity, instead of demanding the rest of the world conform to your expectations and assumptions.

A ford is a shallow section of a river or stream where it may be crossed by wading, on horseback, or inside a vehicle. A ford may occur naturally or be constructed Many towns in the UK have ford in their name for just this reason, they were built around river crossings, Oxford, Stratford, Wallingford, etc - it's a big list

It’s very likely that you’ve personally witnessed some awful, disrespectful tourist behavior in your home country. Meanwhile, it’s probably also safe to say that you’ve also met foreigners who were kind, friendly, and respectful of both your culture and other travelers.

According to Go Abroad, you should strive to minimize the amount of bad tourist behaviors. In short, you have to be mindful of the local community, as well as the environment and wildlife.

For example, this can be as simple as not being noisy at night or respecting local religious traditions.

We lived in Germany and often drove to the Netherlands to buy from their excellent Hypermarkets. We'd start the day off early and go visit a tourist spot for most of the day then head to our preferred store, grab a meal at a local restaurant then head back over the border to home, once or twice a month. Long but fun day.

It should be common sense, but seeing as it’s in particularly short supply these days, it’s important to remember not to litter or damage landmarks. Not only is this immoral behavior, but depending on the country, you can get in some serious legal trouble, too.

Furthermore, during your travels, try to avoid taking part in activities that exploit other people or animals.

Meanwhile, becoming a better tourist is definitely possible with a bit of effort. You might not change how others perceive you, but you can ensure that you’ve done everything that you can to be respectful.

The first thing you should do is focus on research about the place you’ll be visiting. Read up on the local culture, customs, traditions, laws, and religions. Go through other travelers’ accounts about the challenges they faced. The more time you spend on research, the better prepared you’ll be. Of course, we all make mistakes eventually, but at least you’ll have a solid foundation for your trip.

Go Abroad also suggests eating, shopping, and staying locally for a more authentic experience. On top of that, you’ll also end up supporting local businesses and, potentially, save money.

In the meantime, broaden your horizons and visit other places aside from must-see, super popular touristy destinations.

“When possible, try traveling more off-the-beaten path or visiting a destination in the off season. Slow travel also helps one discover a place and its culture more meaningfully.”

I've honestly tried to get better at it, it's not a laziness thing XD But here in Murica we're taught 12-hr time and we're taught the Imperial measurements, not metric. I know a lot of non-Americans think we're stupid for using Imperial and/or 12-hr time, but it's taught to us in school and all of our systems are set up to be displayed in Imperial units and 12-hr time. I promise we're not all idiots, just scréwed over by our education system XD

I was adopted at birth into a Hispanic/Mexican-American family, and when I was a little kid, my great-grandma (who immigrated to the US from Mexico) had a little black dog whose name was "Négro". My great-grandma didn't speak much English and had NO idea that the word was offensive in English/American. Similarly, I used to get a lot of Christmas and birthday gifts of Mexican marker and crayon sets from my Mexican relatives, and yep, the black markers/crayons were labeled "négro" XD It's not an offensive term in Spanish because it's LITERALLY the word for "black" the color, but one must be aware and careful speaking Spanish in America as it IS an offensive racial slur in English.

This one infuriates me. You can use the word ‘British’ to encapsulate the whole of the UK but Britain is made up of 4 different countries, all of whom speak ENGLISH!!

Some of the screenshots that we’re featuring today have been shared by members of the popular ‘[Stuff] Americans Say’ subreddit. This is an online community that was founded all the way back in early 2013.

At the time of writing, this group boasts 391k members, or, as the moderators jokingly and ironically call them, ‘commie socialists.’ Meanwhile, currently online members are wittily referred to as ‘hating freedom.’

These are both sarcastic comments about how some Americans have incredibly biased, non-factual, bizarre perspectives about life in European countries.

Can we take a moment to observe that anything that has been kept at 25 degrees for 4 days has not been cooked at all, merely dehydrated. Cooking starts in the low 50's.

I admit I only "know" Fahrenheit (am American) but whenever I'm telling friends/people online a temperature (whether it's the temp outside where I live or something else) I do a quick Google of "What is 75F in C" and post the temperature as both measurements, like "It's 75F/24C outside and it's January! Friggin SoCal!" It's easy and takes approximately three seconds to do XD

A quick way to do the conversion is this, either add 30 or subtract 30, then half or double that number. It's not exact but very close. Your example would be 75F subtract 30 = 45F. Divide in half = 22.5C. My parents grew up with using Fahrenheit but by the time I came along Australia had converted to Celsius so we all knew this simple calculation. They soon learnt to use Celsius but we all would use this occasionally. I still do when I'm reading Bored Panda!

How hard can it be: Water freezes at 0°C and boils at 100°C. Body temperature is 37°C. Room temperature is defined as 20°C. You don't need much more than that. Unless you bake. I live in both worlds, imperial and metric.

In the range of oven temperatures, it's close enough just to halve the number of Fahrenheit degrees.

When I was a kid, we had an exchange student from Spain stay with us for a year. His name was Carlos, and he was as pale-skinned as I was (I'm adopted and white af) and he had blue eyes and blonde hair. My adoptive family is Mexican, and I grew up speaking Spanish, so I do admit that, as a child, I was initially shocked that Carlos looked "white". I honestly thought Spanish people looked similar to Mexican people because they both spoke versions of the Spanish language. My dad taught me about Spain and its cultural and ancestral history after that, so I learned a thing XD But I admit, when I was 9, it was a bit of a shock!

On top of that, the mods stress that you shouldn’t automatically assume that someone is an American because they “said something silly or they messed up geography.”

I'm adopted, and there's a reason why I embraced my Scottish and Irish ancestry as a teenager, when I found out my genetic heritage via one of those ancestry sites XD America is a very young country and we don't really have any "cultural heritage" of our own. I was adopted into a Hispanic family, and I do embrace a lot of the Hispanic/Mexican traditions (I had a Quinceañera even though I'm white af, lol.) My ex is Chinese and we used to have long talks about the thousands of years of culture and history of his parents' home country XD I do think a lot of Americans cling to the shallow "YEEHAW MURICA!!!" thing because we simply feel the lack of cultural history deep in our hearts and it makes us sad XD

We're taught Imperial measurements, not metric, in school. I know a lot of non-Americans think Americans are stupid for using Imperial units, but it's taught to us in school and ALL of our systems are set up to be displayed in Imperial units (gasoline, tape measures, rulers, etc.) I promise we're not all idiots, just scréwed over by our education system XD And most sane Americans aren't like the ditz in the post above who thinks American culture is the "default". I'm American and - I am not being facetious - 99% of my family members are overweight/obese/morbidly obese. Fast food is everywhere and easy to get, and there is sugar added to EVERYTHING - our ketchup, our bread, etc. SO many of my relatives have Type II diabetes. One of my cousins died aged 24 due to massive kidney failure from his diabetes that he refused to deal with/treat. My aunt's mom had to have her arm amputated due to diabetes-caused gangrene. So many of my family members have died due to diabetes-related causes or complications from morbid obesity. My younger cousin was obese by the time she was 6. It's absolutely heartbreaking. (And it's 100% self-caused obesity in my family, not from PCOS or other health issues.) We used to have a huge family, and there are only about a dozen of my close relatives left alive at this point. It s***s. Not blaming Murica entirely as my family members had full control over what they ate (and we don't live in a food desert), but man.

Hmmm. A German person who never spoke German? Sounds like an American to me!

You can't be German if you're American XD Sigh. I apologize on behalf of my countrymen who act like this. Sane Americans understand that you have genetic HERITAGE that is German, but it doesn't make you "German". You're American. XD

Serious question to americans here: you are so proud of your military and are constantly bragging about it. So what's the issue with the "military time"? Why you don't think it's cool or smh?

Here in Murica we're taught 12-hr time in school, NOT "military time". (Similarly, we're taught the Imperial measurements, not metric, in school.) I know a lot of non-Americans think we're stupid for using Imperial and/or 12-hr time, but it's taught to us in school and all of our systems are set up to be displayed in Imperial units and 12-hr time. I promise we're not all idiots, just scréwed over by our education system XD For the most part, ONLY the military uses "military time" - our clocks and everything else uses the 12-hr system, not the 24-hr system. It has nothing to do with being proud of the military or not - we're not taught 24-hr time in school, so most of us have a hard time parsing it easily.

I get confused. a.m. = ante meridiem = before noon, p.m. = post meridiem = after noon. But 12 o'clock is noon, so it's neither before nor after. And midnight is equidistant from the previous and the next noon, so presumably it's both before and after.

In Europe twelve official, marked, long distance international hiking routes can be enjoyed. The shortest is 1500km, the longest 12000km. Wikipedia has a very neat page about them. One of them, E9, runs alobg the village I live in. But unlike Bill Bryson with the Appalachian trail, I am not tempted to walk it.

It seems odd to me that "biggest" is assumed by so many people to equal "superior. A little 3 km walk might be the most delightful walk you've ever had in your life. What is all this boasting about biggest states, countries etc? So meaningless!

Why does Australia keep doing that. You know, just to not be confused, i consider Oceania the continent (not the one in 1984)

China also uses this format, as do some other parts of Asia. It's the best format for ordering files by date.

Do they measure distances in yards, inches, and feet? Or times in hours, seconds, and minutes? It would make as much sense.

It's spelled Rechtschreibung. I once chatted to a Greek living in Germany who mentioned "right writing". I couldn't resist replying "We have a word for that in English: orthography." He had to laugh.
