Beyoncé sang it best in her hit song Ego when she declared, “It’s just too big.” Anyone who is seriously scared of large things might very well relate. While it’s considered an irrational fear, it’s a very real part of life for those with megalophobia. Tall buildings, huge trucks, vast lakes and even gigantic animals can send them into a flat spin of anxiety. Or have them avoiding situations and places altogether.
Trigger warning: If you’re wondering whether you're a megalophobe, the answer might just lie below. Bored Panda has put together a list of photos of freakishly big objects and living beings that people have spotted in the wild. They were posted by an online community called Megalophobia. It's somewhat of a virtual support group for anyone with a fear of large things, and a safe space to test your triggers if you suspect you may suffer from the phobia.
We also take a look at the bigger picture... What are the causes, the symptoms, and how can you overcome it? You'll find that info between the images.

Right! No fear. It inspires awe and wonderment. This is a true temple.
Load More Replies...I hope I get to come back and experience all of natures beauty anew once again. Unless I come back as a Dung Beetle. Then just slap my ass and call me Sisyphus I guess. Edit: Do you remember the wonderment it filled you with as a kid? I do. Do you still have it? I don't and I don't know where I lost it. I want to see life through a childs eyes again. Sorry, my existential crisis is hanging out. I'll get it tucked back in.
There used to be. Only pressure from the public and new parks and laws saved the 2% that are left.
Load More Replies...If any of these images make you want to run for the smallest hill you can find, you might just have megalophobia. It's a type of anxiety disorder in which a person experiences intense fear of large things.
Massive objects like large buildings, statues, vehicles and even living creatures can stir up fear and anxiety when a megalophobe merely thinks about them, or is around them. It's for this reason that people with the disorder will often simply avoid situations or places that have large objects.
While researchers aren't 100% sure of what exactly causes megalophobia, they believe it could have something to do with having negative or traumatic experiences involving a large object.

Yosemite National Park
We have such a beautiful country, and I'm so angry at Trump for trying to sell off national lands for oil drilling.
And for putting his ugly face on the new park passes!
Load More Replies...Absolutely gorgeous..I'd frame a picture of this and hang it on my wall
Beautiful, clear water. The rock formation in the background ain't bad either.
El Capitan is only one of the amazing rock formations in Yosemite. I've been there many times and I am always impressed. Go in the spring or fall to avoid the massive crowds of summer.
Some of the symptoms of megalophobia include feeling intense fear and anxiety, experiencing a rapid heartbeat, having shortness of breath, feeling dizzy and lightheaded, and/or nauseous, and having a strong desire to escape the large object or situation.
Just because one or all of the images on this list freaked you out, it doesn't mean you're definitely a megalophobe. To confirm that, you'd need a diagnosis from a health professional, and according to the Cleveland Clinic's experts, you typically have to have experienced persistent fear and anxiety of large objects for at least six months in order to be diagnosed with megalophobia.

Load More Replies...Your doctor will most likely ask you a series of questions regarding your history, experiences and symptoms. They'd have to rule out any other physical or mental health conditions that could be causing your symptoms. And if you're in the United States, they'll use the criteria listed in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5) to confirm a diagnosis of megalophobia.
Cleveland Clinic's site notes that generally, phobias have at least four criteria for diagnosis. The first is intense and unreasonable fear, meaning the fear of the object or situation is "persistent and out of proportion to an appropriate level of fear."

Dogs are smaller because they pair with humans and dont need to be or do everything to survive. We have rocks, spears, and fire.

The next is what's known as anticipatory anxiety. "An individual who has a phobia tends to dwell on or dread future situations or experiences that will involve the object or situation they are afraid of," explains the clinic's site.
Those diagnosed with a phobia will also exhibit avoidance. Basically, they'll actively avoid the thing they fear and won't put themselves in a situation where they might encounter it.
The fourth criterion one would have to meet to be diagnosed with a phobia is that it interferes with day-to-day activities. The fear they experience would have to limit their everyday life in some way.

It may LOOK like it's on an island, but it's really on the edge of... OK, it IS on an island, but a very big island, the New Zealand "mainland" if you will. Well, one of two mainlands. The North Island, I'm trying to say. It's also known as Mt Edgemont, but like many of the most prominent mountains in the Anglosphere, governments are shifting from its "c*******r" name. (See Baxter Peak/Katahdin, Mt McKinley/Denali, etc.)
c0l0n!zer is censored? Does some program think the work has to do with a large intestine?)
Load More Replies...Yes, but have you seen what farming did to that land that WAS farmed??? All the areas outside of the green circle is probably farmed or urbanized land. Our problem as a society isn't not having enough farmable land, it's that we aren't using our current land for the right usage. If we used land for purely growing plants and vegetables, and a smaller amount of animals, then we would have enough food to feed anyone, with the right transportation. Another solution is tall farms instead of outward with fertilizers and good drainage systems that don't increase runoff, but its just better to do natural farming with better land use practices in the first place, and then we have some land that we can use for natural beauty!! Having the mindset of "hey, that land can be farmed" is very capitalist in mindset, which will eventually ruin our environment and wipe us all off the earth. If we don't protect our environment now then it'll come back to bite us in the b**t later.

Desensitization/exposure therapy, on the other hand, will put you face-to-face with the objects that trigger your fears, hopefully helping you to overcome them.
"If you have megalophobia and participate in exposure therapy, your therapist or psychologist may begin with talking about large objects. They may then gradually move on to showing you pictures of large objects," explains the Cleveland Clinic site. "Next, they may have you look at and be near a large object in person. The process of exposure therapy is slow and gradual. Your therapist or psychologist will tailor the pace of the therapy to your needs."
Then there's also traditional talk therapy, or even group therapy.

"While it’s tempting to avoid the large objects that cause fear with your megalophobia, this strategy will only make it more difficult to cope with your condition in the long-term," warns the Healthline site. "Instead of avoidance, it’s best to expose yourself to your fears little by little until your anxiety starts to improve."
Relaxation can also help you to cope. So, if you encounter a large object and feel your anxiety start to rise, you could try some deep breathing and visualization to calm yourself down.

Load More Replies...Ships float because of Archimedes' Principle: they displace a volume of water that weighs the same as the ship, creating an upward buoyant force that balances the downward force of gravity. This is achieved by their hull's shape, which pushes aside a large amount of water, and by being mostly hollow, filled with air, making the ship's overall density less than water, allowing it to float.

Exhibit A of what can happen w/a more vertical thrust in an earthquake. Concrete is great under compression, poor under tension...rope being the opposite. Upward thrust and concrete can "shatter"...same thing happened in 86(?) in Northridge. In SoCal we have a lot of freeway columns jacketed in steel so if a similar quake happened ideally there's no imminemt collapse.
What SoCal needs is to roof over Death Valley and turn it into a cistern, like Constantine did 1600 years ago

That is no trick, that is lens compression from a high magnification long lens.

They cant refuel or repair them. Somewhere online is a Russian beach with rusted subs leaking radiation

He'll have to find something else, all since retired and out of service.
Load More Replies...I don't think the words "submarine " and "crew comfort " tend to be seen together, never-ending the size of it.
Alyosha Monument, Murmansk, Russia
Alyosha is typically the nickname for Alexei . So who is this too? A saint?
Looks like a military person due to helmet and rifle.

Two years before I was born, but, I still knew immediately what you were referring to. The very definition of a tragedy.

Little Fung Shui going on with the opening, but original design I believe called for a circle...resembled the Japanese rising sun far too much so design was altered. Can't see it here, but Jinmao tower is tucked between the two; sweet bar on I think the 86th floor with windows on the floor looking down the hotel attrium.
Stone Mountain, A Giant Granite Monolith Near Atlanta, Georgia Is About 514 Meters Above Sea Level
Unsurprising that bigots think they evinproved on an otherwise beautiful place by defacing the mountain.
My friend from Atlanta says this thing's "official" name is Racist Rock.
Load More Replies...Stone Mountain is a celebration of the Confederacy and honors white supremacy. It is an homage to racism.
Confederates: We have no problem treating some humans beings as if they were no better than a commodity, equivalent to, say, a used car or dishware in a yard sale. And some still believe it today.

Thank you. I was going to look for its location.

Parked in section 8... where am I parked again? Your in 8. (That stupid pun helped me remember where my car was after a concert.)

Alone In The Silence
Seen this one before, always puzzled me, what would a giant rocket be doing floating around in space with its engines off? Nothing, is the answer, this one is a fake.
There are some very nice photographs here, even without meeting the criterion of this list.
This list has managed to reinforce that I don't have megalophobia, buuuut it has thrown my acrophobia into sharp relief. 😳
I'm sure the orange menace has secret (as of now) plans to build a gigantic statue of his likeness somewhere in the US. I wouldn't be surprised if he tries to get his face on Mt. Rushmore
