We all know that we can’t trust everything we see on the internet. People have been known to exaggerate their experiences online just for clicks. And considering how rapidly AI technology has advanced, we should even be skeptical of videos that we see.

But taking things with a grain of salt doesn’t mean that we have to assume everything is a lie. After all, reality is often stranger than fiction! One community that knows this all too well is Nothing Ever Happens on Reddit. This group is dedicated to sharing posts from people who attempted to call out liars online. But actually, these stories are true! Enjoy scrolling through these amusing coincidences and fun anecdotes, and be sure to upvote the ones that you wouldn’t doubt for a second.

So... a politician promised to look into a problem but then ignored it because it doesn't fit his political interests. Gosh, that sort of thinking could revolutionize D.C. now that someone has finally thought of it! Oh, wait: I get it!!! You AGREE with the politician, so that it makes it fun and cool, rather than a perfect encapsulization of everything wrong with politics!

FFS, banning books is never the answer. Place stickers in the front warning readers that there’s a racist comment on page 76 or whatever, so they learn to spot stuff while they’re reading it (and can choose if they’re not in the head space to deal with it right then)

Exactly. Only books that should be banned are things like the Anarchists Cookbook. But even then, the information books like that contain should not be banned.

How does a country that talks a lot about free speech rationalise banning books?

Because these people believe free speech means "I get to say what I want and nobody else gets to say anything". These aren't clever people.

When I was in high school, the voting age was dropped to 18. A few seniors ran for school board, and at least one was elected. The first matter was the dress code, particularly the ban on girls wearing trousers, in Minnesota winters. With the help of Child Protection, which went on record that sending children out to play in shorts was cause for investigation, the dress code was reduced to health and safety requirements, as all dress codes should be. May and September can be very hot Minnesota, and even now, many schools lack AC, so wearing shorts is reasonable.

To find out more about the Nothing Ever Happens subreddit, we got in touch with one of the group's moderators, who was kind enough to have a chat with Bored Panda.

"The subreddit was created in direct response to r/thatHappened because of how often users would post stories there that were totally plausible or even verifiably true," the mod shared. "As for who created it, I’m not entirely sure. There was some confusing drama a while ago with the head mod."

"Other than that complicated week or so, it’s pretty quiet," they continued. "It’s been strange watching the sub blow up, as it was around 50k or so when I joined. Especially now, with few active mods, a bigger community means we deal with more spammers. The biggest problem we have is people spamming the 'nothing ever happens' chudjack memes, which have no relation to this sub and are connected to the /pol/ board on 4chan. Repost bots are the next biggest problem, but both have been manageable as of late."

I'm Jewish. It doesn't offend me in the least if someone says Merry Christmas to me. Or greetings for any holiday. And I frequently say Merry Christmas. Except to my anti-semitic neighbor, to whom I always say Happy Hanukkah.

I know plenty of Muslim, Sikh, Hindu etc people who not only have no problem saying Merry Christmas, but also celebrate it themselves. Christmas is unavoidable when you live in a western country which has a Christian heritage (UK) so have taken the "if you can't beat them, join them" attitude. Likewise it's fairly common to see Happy Eid/Diwali cards and signs in the UK.

In that case, Happy Holidays. From an atheist who thinks that the best reason to say "Happy holidays" besides not knowing which holiday somebody celebrates is knowing they're offended if you say "Happy holidays" instead of "Merry Christmas'.

Exchanges like this really do happen. In Catholic high-school I was asked to be cantor for mass. I'm not religious, but have a great voice and had been taught all the songs. It was my first mass ever, and I was terrified to get up on the stage/pulpit/place where priests do their thing? The priest saw my fear and took me aside to ask what was wrong. "I'm an atheist, and have never done this before." His reply "Don't worry. I'll hold your hand. God loves you all the same, and they don't have to know." He did. It was awesome. Father O'Brian was a great dude.

"As for content moderation, I’m very hands off," the moderator told Bored Panda. "I think over moderation can quickly ruin a sub, plus this sub is very subjective in nature. People frequently post things I think are fake, but it’d really ruin the fun for everyone if I curated the sub to my own personal belief/disbelief."

"More importantly though, it’d just be way too much work. This is not a paid job, and I’m honestly confused how I ended up in charge of such a big sub," the user continued. "Removing a post or comment is effort that I just don’t care to make unless something is really bad. If someone’s just being a jerk, I usually give a 1-3 day ban. Once you start getting into straight up bigotry, it’s a permaban."

But the moderator added that they're only able to have such a hands-off approach because the users in this community are generally well behaved. "And engagement on posts is usually pretty low for a sub this large," they noted. "If even 5% of commenters are causing problems, which is a massive overestimate, that’s still only a handful of comments to deal with."

We don't need to lower the voting age, we need to impose term limits and have a maximum cutoff age for all elected officials. No one over 65 should be allowed to hold political office, and no politician on any level should be allowed to hold a post for more than ten years. Times change quickly, and people do not change quickly enough.

Word. Two jobs ago, I was the SysAdmin / IT Department for a small 'Tiger Team' web development group, part of a much larger company. We developed (and sometimes hosted) web sites and web applications for outfits internal to the company and for external customers. The *BEST* web developer we had, 'Helen', let's call her, was blind. From Birth. Every time we upgraded workstations, I would install 'Jaws' screen reader software for her. Her code was always immaculate, solid as a rock - and impeccably well formatted. Now, you might consider yourself to be an honest boy scout who would never tell a fib. But the truth is that most people lie, at least some of the time. According to a study from the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse, three-quarters of people keep their lies to a minimum, between zero and two each day. But the top 1% of liars are dishonest about 17 times on any given day.

Of course, people often find ways to justify their lies too. The most common reasons cited for lying were to avoid others, as a joke or prank, to protect one’s self, to impress someone else, to protect another person, for personal gain, or to benefit someone else. And supposedly, 90% of lies told are little white lies.

1-2 cups of coffee a day are safe during pregnancy. Like most things, you don't know what hey have done for the rest of the day and it's not your business.

It's not proven that the safe amount of caffeine is any lower during a healthy pregnancy than at any other time, but it's always advised to err on the side of caution anyway because there is no benefit to having that third cup of coffee that outweighs the risk, even if the risk is minimal.

I never EVER talk about someone being pregnant. I've had people I've known for a long time who were obviously in the early stages of pregnancy, but never said a word (except to my wife) until they themselves mentioned it.

I’ve been mistaken for pregnant more than once - it’s not fun or flattering. And I spent half a high school reunion defending a “popular” girl I never even particularly cared for while everyone gossiped about her for drinking. She had the baby a month prior and her belly hasn’t gone down yet.

Makes no sense because there are things which are generally super bad in that situation like drinking alcohol, smoking or doing d***s. If you see that behavior you should definitely call it out. Which is true for anything that is harmful for a human being. If you see some people beat someone up you should also try to help, at minimum by calling police/ambulance whatever if you can't step in your self. Or is that also a case of "you should shut the f up when it's not your face?"

I can understand this one, if she normally says "I'm at work" and not "I'm at the hospital". Your whole life long you've associated the sentence "at the hospital" with something being very wrong, so it's not strange that your brain accidentally switches back to that.

Apparently, you can’t trust anyone nowadays. Because over half of the survey participants admitted that they lie to their friends, and over one-fifth say they lie to family members. 11% are guilty of lying to classmates or colleagues, and nearly 9% will lie to complete strangers. 8.5% also admit that they’ve lied to acquaintances. But we can’t really judge them. Hasn’t everyone claimed to be sick when they didn’t feel up to hanging out or needed a day off from work?

But, sadly, absolutely wrong. If you watch the moon, it moves a significant chunk of the sky from one day to the next, and if you think about it, if it was taken at the same time and place... if for simplicity we assume a full moon directly in front, then the new moon will be almost directly *behind* because the earth's rotation around the sun is a lot slower than the moon around the earth, so the side that is illuminated by the sun (full moon) and the side that is shaded (new moon) will be on opposite sides of the sky. So, it looks amazing but it's not real.

Apparently, our own behavior also impacts how we view other people’s behavior online. For example, if you always tell the truth on social media and dating apps, you’re more likely to assume that others will do the same. But if you tend to fabricate stories or stretch the truth, you’ll be skeptical of what others tell you. And the most common thing that people lie about is their appearance. But this isn’t surprising, as a whopping 90% of people surveyed said they expect others to lie about how they look.

I have no idea what "3 regions" they are talking about. There are only 14 states that do not have members of federally recognized tribes, but do have state recognized tribes (such as the Lenape in New Jersey and Delaware). There are zero states with no recognized tribes. Alaska has 574.

Easy. The (current) eastern, central, and western US. Although it actually says 3 *of* the major regions, which would work perfectly even if there were 100 major regions.

The question definitely needs to rephrased. I assume there used to be several regions with large Native American settlements but the question makes it seem that Native Americans were restricted to certain regions and talks about them in the past tense.

I believe this because approx 3 months ago, my baby, Tiny Bits, was taking a nap. He's old and as I was getting ready to walk out the door I decided he looked so sweet and peaceful, I shouldn't bother him. Got to the vet, walked in, checked in and sat down before I realized what I had done. I'm only 47.

I have a list of checkpoints for going to bed, leaving the house (to go to work), and if there's something specific that needs done like mailing a parcel, it will be added to the list. I know I am *very* easily distracted and have the attention span of a dead gnat, so some preparation makes things a lot smoother. I only forget stuff when I "pop into the supermarket" without a list and buy a few things that look interesting and get home before I realise that the thing I actually went in there for........ 🤦‍♀️

The reasons that researchers found for lying weren’t exactly shocking either. “They wanted to be cooler. They wanted to be more beautiful. They wanted to be [hotter],” Drouin says, “They wanted to give an appearance of a life that was better than the life that they were leading.”

But some admitted that they simply assumed everyone lies online. “This is the place where lying is standard,” Drouin added.

My local grocery store, part of a very large chain, hires, (jeez, what's the correct PC word for Down Syndrome people these days) as baggers and cart fetchers. They are very conscientious about bagging things carefully and take pride in doing it right. And they remember everyone who was ever nice or polite to them.

As a mother of a very skinny and picky toddler who somehow didn't die and grew up to be over six foot tall, I can verify that this could happen. I found it hard to understand how he could apparently live on chicken nuggets, cheerios and air. Then suddenly, when he was a teenager, I would buy groceries for six people, for a week, and they were gone in two days. ... edited because I tried to post a picture from a Disney ™, of the Beast shouting at Belle "Then starve", and was kicked out. But you all know what I'm talking about.

Dreams can be totally weird, so this is super believable. I once dreamed that I had a job pushing the hands around on a clock face. I got moved from the hour hand to the second hand and had to ask to be moved back to the hour hand because I'm disabled and can't move fast enough for the second hand... (You can probably tell I'd been stressing about disability adjustments in real life around the time of that dream)

Totally plausible. I have personally had to teach junior doctors how to use a tape dictaphone, including the fact you have put a tape in. The technology has moved so fast, all the stuff from when I was a kid is generations of obsolence removed from kids' experience today. And that's not a criticism; not many kids when I was small could have worked a reel-to-reel tape recorder. You can't blame children for not knowing technology that nobody's used the entire time they've been alive.

this one is pretty easy to believe, especially since it is similar to what happened to me. i had only ever seen avocado trees on farms before, so i always thought that they grew like an orange tree, about 10 feet tall. turns out wild avocado trees are much larger. i had no idea the 65 foot tall tree in my backyard was an avocado tree until i would hear loud thuds on the roof at night and what sounded like something running down the roof and jumping into the yard. turns out it was over ripe, 2 pound avocados dropping onto and rolling off my roof. took a good 6 months for me to understand what was going on because whenever id go look for the source of the noise all the avocado guts would be already eaten by the squirrels in the yard. so i would find these weird wood balls on the ground, turns out they were huge avocado pits. i now have 6 avo trees in the yard.

I bought my house from the bank after the housing crash; the bank didn’t really need to market it and the previous owners had moved to another state. I didn’t know why I kept finding these tiny avocados for several months until I finally got around to hiring tree trimmers.

Not buying this one. If you have ever had a friend or neighbor with an avocado tree, they don't ripen one at a time. It's like gardeners pushing zucchini; if you tell them you want one you're getting 20.

So what do you think is impropbable? That homeless people don't like being filmed as a performative for likes? That a person might feed the homeless and not film it? That someone who regularly helps the homeless might want to draw attention to the issue of using " help" to make content? Because I don't think anything on this list is unlikely.

I have a slightly opposite story: the jock who always seemed to be scowling when he walked in the calculus class told me at our 20th reunion that that was the year he’d decided to really focus on his studies, and that calculus was the class where he felt safest because we all just let him be. He became an engineer.

How is this fake?? I’m 39 and LAST YEAR I had a guy from GRADE 7, THE LAST YEAR OF PRIMARY SCHOOL all the way back in 1999 😬 contact me on FB and he said he always remembered me and thanked me for being the only person who was always nice to him, argued with the bullies for him and always his friend… I’m a girl and this kid was about the size of an 18 year old by the time we hit grade 5, but unfortunately wasn’t very smart. Lovely guy though. ——— I didn’t run in any groups, I was friends with everyone in primary school and then in high school stuck with certain people until we got our little clique together. Unfortunately, my group turned out to be the biggest arseholes in senior years (NOT ME!!), there were 2 girls who bullied everyone because they thought they were top shít, so when they picked on someone, i started on THEM in front of the person. Bítches.

Some people really talk in their sleep. A good friend sleeps over every now and then after hangout. PEOPLE, this man talks about everything from shipping prices (he's a shipping merchant), chess and cooking. Last time, I heard him rambling how he's about to "paint all the shrimps pink". Its super rare though, in 15 years maybe 8 times or such.

I'm a sleep talker and when I was still working in a grocery store, I once dreamt that a customer asked me for kimchi schnapps, which, spoiler alert dear reader, DOES NOT EXIST! I was so stunned by that request IN MY DREAM that I repeated it questioningly OUT LOUD. Which woke up my then-gf (who is of korean descent, btw) and myself (who hails from the land of schnapps) and made us laugh so hard that we couldn't go back to sleep for several minutes. I apparently pulled the memory foam pillow out from under my wife's head and proceeded to smack her in the face with it saying "It's a bear!" and then went back to sleep. I keep telling her "We haven't been attacked by bears...they're afraid of me"

It's weird out of all the pixar movies: toys being alive, monsters scaring kids for energy, a world run by sentient cars; i found the one where people have souls and heaven exists to be the least believable.

If you've never experienced the difference between a "white" Evangelical church and a "black" Evangelical church, I recommend checking it out. Where white people just sort of stand there looking bored and half-a.ssed singing or listening, at Black churches, it really is like in the movies with the clapping and dancing and "Praise Jesus"-es and "Amen!"s. It's wild. I always enjoyed the one my family used to visit when we passed through Chicago.

Not always. My oldest has r******d growth as a result of his picky eating. He just was not getting enough nutrients to grow. We had to find middle grounds in eating what he likes vs healthy foods to get him growing again. Starving because 'you'll eat when you're hungry' did not do a thing for him. He'd happily starve, if it ment that he would not have to eat the things we parents said he should eat.

Definitely can see this happening. I have her friend whose son is a very picky eater because of sensory issues. The school wouldn’t serve him meals if he didn’t eat the whole thing. She had to get a note from his doctor saying that it is okay just to serve him chips or whatever else he wanted to eat that day because any food is better than no food.

Oof. Not quite the same thing but I had the opposite problem once. I was maybe 8ish and a teacher refused to let me leave the lunch area until I'd eaten my entire lunch. The thing was, my parents were in the process of refinishing the kitchen floor and the acrid chemical smell had gotten into everything, particularly the bread, so my sandwiches were completely inedible and anything else that wasn't sealed was no better. It was awful.

If the school won't allow the child to eat the meal that was packed, then it is the school's responsibility to provide healthy food that the child will eat and at their own expense. This garbage where they won't allow kids to eat what their parents sent with them, but then either make them go hungry or charge the parents for an alternative lunch is insane.

Yup. Group projects are best done alone; otherwise there's one that does the work, one that messes everything up, one that questions everything, and two or three who would rather doodle ducks than pay any attention to the project. The only thing group projects are good for is life lessons about how cow-orkers will scrêw you and why you should do your best work by yourself and for yourself.

When I taught, the mornings were my favorite because all the little ones coming in would have something to tell you. Whether it was what cereal they had for breakfast, that they picked out their clothes all on their own (sometimes this was very obvious), what funny thing the dog did, or even what mommy was yelling about last night ... it was always fun to hear their stories. My aunt gave my dad (her brother) a turnip during a mystery gift thing at Christmas one year, so this is totally something I can see happening. (He got an actual gift as well, and thought the turnip was the funniest thing ever)

I'm having flashbacks of the time CBS reported on a letter from the early 1970s purporting to show that George W Bush used special favors to get out of going to Vietnam. The letter had a proportional-space font and broke lines in such a way as to show the text was repositioned to the next line when a word went too long. The network's defenders tried to argue that there were typewriters capable of that... as if an officer would use a publishing took worth hundreds of thousands of dollars to write such a letter.... and carefully and perfectly estimate where line breaks would be necessary.

Entirely possible. It largely depends on how the adults around you have spoken to you through your childhood. My daughter, at the age of 4, used the word "facetious" correctly in a sentence. At the time, we were living with my parents, who were both college professors. None of us ever spoke baby talk to her, so she learned.

Yet another person with no experience around kids that doesn’t realise that kids will parrot anything they hear. My niece and nephew started doing that as soon as they could talk— which wasn’t the greatest thing because everyone except grandma swears like army personnel.. how are the kids are extremely intelligent and sometimes I’ll use words that we even stop and stare at them and wonder how they know them at nine and 11 years old. They are actually the smartest kids in their grades though. Every school challenge against other schools and competitions they’re always chosen so very smart kids. I don’t doubt This is real.

A friends baby's first word was Aardvark - the health visitor was very, very impressed - until she followed it with dog and her mum explained that their dog was called Aardvark. Plus we were teaching our 2 year old grandson reciprocity - he was feeding the cat his cheese and had to eat some himself, by the end he was nodding and saying (badly) reciprocity.

What does my period have to do with my sore throat? Last time I saw a doctor, he never really looked at me, just kept throwing qyestions at me and typing answers into the computer. When was your last menstruation? May 2011. Yeah, menopause happens. Then he actually looked at me.

I don’t know what GDP is so this makes no sense to me 🤷‍♀️. I’m not gonna Google it because I’m currently outside watching my teenage age cat be a little brat and trying to keep her from terrorising the local wildlife – – the lizards and geckos. She hates that I won’t let her catch them. 😂. We have supervised outdoor time and then we go straight back inside. Just a fun cute little story to change the subject – – she has a little harness on and if I don’t put it on she gets really nervous and won’t go outside without it. It’s actually really cute. And the times that she does go outside without it, she acts really weird. She mucks up a lot too.

It IS made up, by someone whose world is obviously limited. While home-schooling is not for every student--even in the same family--there's no caricature that holds up in the real world. My son and daughter were both home-schooled so the four of us could travel where I went to teach and speak and work. While homeschooling isn't the best idea for every child, it was perfect for our family. My daughter and son are both accomplished in their fields, well-versed in relationships and well-adjusted to the world.

There were people in my class who could have done that. And I could certainly have come up with the smart alec title. Though the art teacher might not have laughed

Of all professions I don't think arts teachers need to be reminded "life is full of disappointments."

Don't underestimate a 12 year old with a computer. My cousin used to hack people when he was about that age.

I figured out how to get internet working through procomm on an orange and black computer when I was 13. Took trial and error, but I had a BBS number from a note on a computer lab wall and was determined. Now I'm here, and everyone regrets it.

I started teaching myself Corel Draw when I was 12 after I begged my mother for a copy when I saw it on the shelf at Babbage's. Photoshop released not long after, and while I wouldn't encounter it for another few years when I took a job at a cybercafe, it was just a next step up, though I wouldn't encounter it. I'll admit, a lot of these images I struggle to believe, but this one? *MY* 12 year old has done more complex things in Paint, much less with my copy of Photoshop, so this one I can totally believe.

It's not just white, it's non-Asian in general. But funny all the same that someone got offended by it enough to try and say it didn't happen

To me (Brit) I still read Asian and think of Indian/Pakistani heritage. Now I’m wondering whether someone with Indian heritage would also get the same responses.

Went to a local west indian restaurant several times where I used to work to get lunch. I was always surprised when people looked at me funny like white girl eats this kind of food/ Why is that so hard to believe?

To me this sounds less like "discrimination against white man" and more like "experienced waiter". After enough customers ask for something, then complain because they got *exactly what they asked for*, servers are going to start getting dubious about certain requests.

Huh? I love sushi and visited dozens of Asian restaurants. I've never been given such treatment.

Probably because people ask for SUSHI, not necessarily "RAW" salmon.

Raw fish is sashimi. Sushi could have raw fish as an ingredient, but it doesn't always. Anyway, poke is Hawaiian and sashimi and sushi are Japanese...so I don't think it's all that surprising that someone would not say 'sashimi poke' (or even 'sushi poke'). I mean, they could, but it's not weird that they wouldn't think to do so.
