“Welcome To Ceramics”: 40 Times Ceramics Enthusiasts Made Something So Cool And Unique, They Just Had To Show It Off In This Online Group
Ceramics are probably the most common of all art forms to have emerged from human history and are one of the oldest inventions. The first evidence of human-made ceramics dates back to at least 24,000 years BC! While the technology and applications have steadily increased, the use of this form of art stayed pretty much the same. Just like before, we make use of ceramics as containers for water and food, art objects, tiles and bricks and so on.
In this article, however, we want to share the most unusual and unique ceramic things that people created, as posted on this subreddit, r/Ceramics. From impressive arm sculptures to exclusive cups, we believe you’ll find some really interesting and beautiful pieces in here.

beautiful! in my middle school ceramics class we couldn't make anything in that shape, it would always collapse for some reason (let's just say my mom still loves a few of my "good" pieces, but keeps the good ones out)
Usually, when drinking tea or coffee from our favorite cup, we do not think about the processes our mug had to go through to finally reach our home. Whether it’s a one-of-a-kind piece or a mass-manufactured product, there are always some thoughts and efforts put into its design and its making.
Every ceramic piece begins with the preparation of clay followed by actual shaping. When we are finally satisfied with how our article looks, it goes into firing. The final stage is painting and decorating. Of course, the techniques can vary depending on the person and school. Not to mention the different materials that are used when molding an item. You can find more about ceramic techniques here.

The talent and attention to detail is absolutely flawless! Good job :)
Once humans discovered that clay could be formed into something by mixing it with water and then firing, a key industry was born, laying the foundation for what we know now as ceramics.
The oldest known ceramic artifact is a statuette of a woman that dates back to the late Paleolithic period. The first examples of pottery appeared in China several thousand years later (18 000-17 000 BCE).

Gorgeous. The single red accent leaps right out at the eye, leading the stark white glaze of the rest of the piece a particular visual sharpness.

Did you know that ceramics can also be used to improve our mental health and well-being? Artistic creation has allowed humans to find expression and communicate since the beginning of human history. In recent decades, scientists have recognized the transformative potential of art. Art therapy has increasingly been included in mental health treatment programs around the world and has been proven to help patients heal faster.

How About Some Frogs?
They have. But the mugs are incredibly expensive.
Load More Replies...I love frogs! My daughter has taken up the gene's for frog's and has had one for about 3yrs. now. His(?) name is tiny. I got my love from my dad. He always loved animals and snakes and so forth. He passed away in late 2011 and in 2012 my son's teacher's snakes had babies. I have 2. Then we have 2 dogs now. I wish he was still here. I know he'd love my snakes Monkey and Peanut and dogs Ricky and Lucy!!
that's such a sweet thing that all of you love! For us it's definitely cats. Well, my grandma always had dogs. But each time they moved (my grandpa was in the military, so that was every two or three years) my mom says they would have to give away the dogs. So terribly sad. I think they kept a handful though. Now my grandma has a dog, my aunt has like 7 cats and we have 4 and two old puppers.

Made Some Little Blobfish Desk Buddies / Paperweights
Fun fact: Blobfish occupies a habitat some 2,800 metres (9,200 ft) beneath the waves – a zone that's exposed to incredible pressures. In fact, it's actually kind of cute when at its usual depth. However, when it encounters a rapid pressure drop while being hauled to the surface, its gelatinous flesh rapidly expands and makes them a gooey mess we know from pictures and it is totally not fair. EDIT: *sad fact
Correct and the way we "normally" see/portray them is when they are dead.
Load More Replies...Unfortunately, once they look like this, they are already done for. They look nothing like that when they are deep in the ocean.
Load More Replies...You know that they're dead, when they look like that? Killed by the lack of pressure when brought to the surface. The blowfish how you see it here are the carcasses of very different looking fish that died miserably. How cute...

Rakooon
Tongue-in-cheek naming: this was made by a technique called raku, which is why the artist spelled it “rakoon” and not “raccoon”!
Does anyone know how the color and pattern of this art piece has been made?
It uses raku firing, which is (essentially) when the piece is set on fire after being glazed so that it heats very quickly and causes crackles in the coloration.

Rahel Ungwanaka From @hermannsburgpotters, Central Australia
Hermannsburg, "only" 120 km from Alice Springs in Australia, is famous for aboriginal art.
I can see why. It's outstanding work. I love the charachtures of the animals especially. It truly speaks of the surroundings of their lives. I found a 1 foot tall vase about 25 years ago and fell in love with it. It was rich colors of light and dark blues with a strange partridge looking bird with scrolling and dots on the front and a very cute butterfly on the back. I always knew it had markings on bottom but assumed it was just homemade locally and never thought to look it up until a couple years ago. But it turned out to be a Ken Edward's Tonala piece in his bird and butterfly series. It's Asian influenced Mexican pottery and I've never seen another quite like mine but just similar items of much smaller size. I do still love it the same tho, it's my wonky bird vase lol.

I Made A Bull Sculpture And Glazed It With A Crystalline Glaze. It Dunted But It Doesn't Bother Me Too Much. What Do You All Think?
This is so beautiful, but I gotta ask the big questions.........What does "dunted" mean??
Here you go: Dunting generally refers to firing cracks that occur in ceramic ware as it is cooled in the kiln. The reason is generally uneven cross section or too rapid cooling.
Load More Replies...I don't know what dunted means, but if this is the result......congratulations on dunting!

Finally Discovered The Underglaze Room At The Studio And I’m So Excited
I’m confused about the “finally” statement. If this is at a school or something, where people can go for pottery lessons, wouldn’t they have given the students a tour of the facility (or at least the pottery areas) and shown them the underglaze room? Am I missing something?
So in some cases, if you dont have your own kiln then you have to go to a studio that does and they almost always make you use their clay (so they know you didnt accidentally use a low fire clay for a high fire kiln and it explode ruining other people's work). The studio may just be like, here's the glaze room, here's the pottery wheels, knock yourself out. A more polite, less curious person than I may not explore as much until told by someone else. Just a possibility. I was part of a very informal group like this.
