As a travel agent I can tell you this still happens too often. Same for passports and ID's. We never ask for scans/copies. And if you really must, black out at least your social security number and add the text COPY FOR [insert reason or user] [insert date] in a large font across the entire document (not blocking the necessary information, especially the Machine Readable Zone at the bottom).

Several years ago, a new guy got hired, first day he parked beside me at work. He had 2 of those driving map devices like garmen mounted on his dash. Asked him why he had 2 of them, he said he uses one to get from his house to work and the other to get from work back to his house.
