Mechanics recommend that we bring our cars in for maintenance visits every six or 12 months. But blessed be the car owner who actually does that. In reality, owners wait an average of four months before addressing their "check engine" lights. Perhaps, then, it's no surprise that mechanics have to deal with all sorts of crazy situations.

The community "Just Rolled Into The Shop" on Reddit collects the funniest and wildest things auto mechanics have come across on the job. Exhaust pipe on an electric car? Check! A car frame rusted so badly it has holes in it? Check! So, Pandas, scroll down and see the newest examples of the madness mechanics have to deal with almost daily.

I love this one! Having been the guy who pranks (Thanks Grandpa for being a great teacher), I never thought of a harmonica, but this is genius. Some of my favorites are giant Zip Ties on driveshaft, CV axles; Soda cans with nuts/bolts inside, wired to rattle and bang on the frame, gas tank, etc; plastic air horn in the tailpipe; Kazoo attached to underwood air intake; attaching something to the wiper mechanism under the cowl vent to make irritating noises. The list is long, but these are my most used and most annoying!!

Parking lot and streetside mechanics are a special breed. They're quick to pull in their feet, look both ways when heading to the toolbox, and tend to have gravel in their hair.

    That's what I'm talking about! 👍🏻

It's probably no secret why cars get into conditions like these. The longer we delay servicing our cars, the more likely they are to have serious problems. That's just simple physics. However, people still delay bringing their cars to the mechanic, and some even admit to putting them off for as long as six to 18 months.

32% of Americans also say they'll wait "as long as possible" to get their car serviced. 39% admit they don't even do regular check-ups – the only time they visit a mechanic is when something is broken or after an accident happens. But here's the truth: most people aren't doing it out of laziness or lack of attention. Almost half of Americans (48%) say they wait so long because frequent visits to the mechanic are just not financially feasible for them.

I rolled my Scion xB outside Rock Springs, WY, a few years ago. 80 mph limit, extreme crosswinds, plastic car. Landed upright, but all tires blown. Passers-by stopped to help and all made same comment: "Lucky you were wearing your seat belt!" As shook up as I was, I still was able to respond, "Noooo, that's actually the point of having them." (Slight concussion, but no serious injury)

They probably thought the fire was out numerous times. They now purchase fire dept's portable dunk tanks for e- and hybrid-vehicles for this reason. Otherwise, it takes thousands of gallons of water and hours of valuable first responder time.

If you've taken your car to the mechanic lately and thought that the bill was kind of high, you're not alone. Experts report that car repair costs have risen by 4.1% each year between 2013 and 2023. Still, they're having trouble explaining why exactly they're so expensive at the moment. One possible reason could be that the cost of collision insurance claims is rising.

Others speculate that cars are becoming more expensive to repair. The cars we're driving today are heavier (by 33% exactly, since 1985) and about twice as powerful than they were 40 years ago. There are also many other improvements: turbochargers attached to engines, all-wheel drive systems, and the cars are almost "a rolling network of computers," according to one repair shop owner.

Sadly, this is a good example of most alignment shops. A specialist I knew years ago told me how to find a good one. Ask them if they align a '96 Explorer to factory specs. If they say yes, leave. Factory specs will wear the tires prematurely. If they know that you don't, then you've found someone who knows their stuff.

If you got into a car accident 10 years ago, your car would no doubt need some repairs. But today, experts claim, there are a dozen other tweaks that would need to be replaced. "You can have the same kind of accident that you would have 10 years ago, but now you have three additional sensors that are on the part of the vehicle that was impacted that you now have to potentially replace," the director of performance consulting at Mitchell Ryan Mandell told CNBC.

In 2013 I went to the Fiat dealer to look at a trade-in 2012 Fiat 500. Whoever traded it in put 130,000 miles on it in less than 12 months of ownership. ~400 miles per day.

An average American spends around $438 on maintenance every year. Most car owners say they have had their current car for about seven years, but they claim they have spent around $6,272 in total on their car for repairs throughout the years.

There might be one advantage to this: people are determined to own their current cars for longer. In doing so, they're focused on taking better care of their car. Due to rising repair costs, 60% of Gen Zers say they're making an active effort to better maintain their cars.

possible reason ... looking at that rear wheel ... it appears that those rims are wider than the tire ... size mismatch ... if so, would not take much, tight turn or over acceleration, to pop those tires off.

On a side note, I bought an EV and discovered a really great benefit. Since there is no motor, there is no motor sound or vibration. I never realized how irritating feeling the vibration was. And I've heard so many things in songs while in the car that I never heard before. (Another great benefit is the go--cart pedal - as I think of it. You press to go, you let up to stop. I hardly ever move my foot to the break. And the cruise control is absolutely spot on all the time. And it accelerates like a mother f****r.)

Same here, but this wouldn’t be one of them. Expensive, fancy, sports cars or enormous pickup trucks don’t impress me at all. Never have, even when I was young and all the young guys used to try to impress girls with their souped up cars. I prefer more low key quality, so would not have a car like this if money was no object. Or a big fancy house. Or all the other trappings that newly wealthy people tend to put on show. Part of my mother’s family is Philadelphia Main Line old money, but aside from the big family manse, you’d never know it to look at them. That’s the way of old money. They do not flaunt, they’re low key, they go for understated elegance, and the best of them can be very down to earth and kind. They also are very generous when it comes to charitable donations, but generally give anonymously, because they don’t advertise their wealth. They also buy the best quality of everything. It’s not at all flashy but whatever they buy is very long-lasting (clothing made very well from the best fabrics, furniture made of solid wood and the best upholstery fabrics, quality jewelry, a home that is in a solidly good neighborhood so will not depreciate, a quality car that isn’t flashy and will last them decades because they are able to pay for the best upkeep for it, you name it). That is what I would try to emulate if I ever, somehow, attained wealth.

    View more comments

A true car repairman would tell you to never do repairs on your car on your own. Even minor ones. However, many Americans are trying to save money by doing things like oil changes, light maintenance, replacing interior parts, changing tires, or doing break maintenance themselves. At the same time, there are things many car owners just don't feel comfortable doing themselves. Perhaps that's why 64% of drivers are currently putting off some sort of vehicle maintenance.

I reached into the busted up taillight and pulled out a 12 gauge deer slug and handed it to them saying the customer's son had pissed off some girl's dad and daddy then shot the taillight as the boy was speeding away, the customer and me just laughed and left management standing with dumb look on their faces

We are the ones who LOVE driving a manual transmission appreciate everything the manual provides, the joyful feeling of completing a well-executed shifting, the mechanical and human connectedness AND the utterly, awesome sound only the manual car can make it

I like a manual because it forces me to concentrate on driving--and nothing else. Manuals can be a pain in stop-and-go traffic, but even then, you're in control. I have an old car with a stick. It's been fitted with some of the new stuff (disc brakes, fuel injection), but no distracting doodads. No screens. Just a radio and a CD player. No choice but to ignore your phone (which I do anyway).

Because with a higher speed available, you need a broader spectrum of speeds, but still don't want the gaps to be too large. And, yes, driving a manual can be fun. If you synced your double-clutching and Zwischengas right, you wouldn't notice if it's a synhronized gearbox at all. It's nice to experience a good-working symbiosis of man and machine, ... or woman and machine.

Sounds like a Nissan Sentra my dad picked up cheap. The car was less than 1 year old. Nissan gave the girl a new car when it was less than 4 months old. It stopped running one day and they could never get it to run again. It had changed hands 6 times before my dad got it. Had 1500 miles on the odometer. It had spark, good fuel pressure, was in time and had good compression so he figured it had to be a computer or injection problem so he changed it over to a carb. Nope, still wouldn't hit a lick. I sold it a few years later for a parts car after he passed away.

$700, you have to recharge it every couple weeks, and the only extra added functionality is that it shows you the status of the car locks and can adjust the seat remotely. Great value... No wonder it lasted only about a couple years before BMW phased it out and stopped using it on current models a couple years ago. But, BMW being BMW, they moved to a smartphone-controlled system... they never learn.

I have this key on my car (I bought the car used). It’s so annoying. You have to charge it every month, it doesn’t actually tell you anything useful, it’s laggy as fùck, there’s no where for the emergency key so you have to have a case to keep the two together and if it goes flat the only way to bring it back to life is to charge it with micro usb. Oh as it was originally a £1200 option

My car had the clicker made to the key. I went to the local locksmith and had them cut standard keys which still contain the security chip but are much smaller. I have all of our cars programmed to operate off the same clicker which I carry on a separate key ring. Before chipped keys, I'd have one side of the key cut for one car and the other side for another, thereby reducing the number of keys required by half.

My favorite was the bottle jack with the block of wood between the car and the hydraulic ram. When I suggested he put the bottle jack on TOP of the block, so thw ram is lifting on the frame, he told me that was unsafe, because the block couldn't handle thw weight of the jack AND the car. I walked away. There obviously wasn't any way I could explain where he would understand....anything.

Water + lithium = more fire. A fact even most firefighters don't know. In this case, beyond getting lucky, the sprinklers at least kept everything else form being consumed. The lesson seen here and with all EV fires? Never park an EV indoors or next to anything you don't want burned up. EV's are ticking time bomb.

We had a fire at one of the motorcycle dealerships in our group, most likely a battery fault that was being worked on, it took out the workshop AND the illegal gas storage in the building next door, that went on to take out the car dealership next to that. I never heard the insurance figure but three buildings, 20+ cars and 50+ motorcycles got bbq that night 😳

The average person today knows absolutely nothing about cars. Many don't even know what make or model their car is. They buy them solely on appearance. Far too many get in, turn the key and go. When it suffers a catastrophic failure, they blame the car/brand and refuse to understand their complete lack of maintenance is the reason for the failure.

When I have my windows tinted, I tell them, I'm not concerned with darkness, I want UV protection and I want to be able to see. I can't imagine having it any darker than that. What I don't get is why they aren't making cars with auto tinting windows? It works for eyeglasses, it'll work for cars. And now there are multiple powered options that do exactly that. This would make driving safer.

I work at a dealership -- sometimes the porters are called on to do test drives to see if they can replicate the issue a customer described before the technicians pop it up on a rack. This guy probably started the test drive and got as far as he could before realizing there was something the customer didn't tell him (namely, they had no oil in the car).

A fast oil change place (don't remember the specific company name) across from where my son worked had to start the engine after draining the oil to be sure ALL oil was removed. Yes, you read that right. If they didn't, they'd get fired. That's right, some policy maker at corporate thinks normal cars have a dry sump oil system.

KIA in the USA is a budget brand, in the rest of the world is a mainstream or even slightly premium brand. That's why KIA in the USA has only their sh*ttier models and they come without many features common elsewhere (such as the lack of immobilizer made famous by the tiktok Kia Boys, or the drive assist that is standard on most EU models, or their whole PHEV line). KIA focus in the EU and Asia is in premium sedans (such as the Ceed), while in the US they sell mostly their crossover SUVs, and even those are redesigned -and worsened- to appeal the American taste.

Even the DIY rubber string plugs last forever. I've got a trailer tire that I plugged at least 4 or 5 years ago that's still fine.

I plugged a motorcycle tire even when everyone said it wouldn't hold. I wore that tire slick as an onion and that plugged never leaked. If a plug is installed correctly, there's nothing wrong with plugs.

I agree with this one, at least in part. If they are simply moving the car in and out of the workshop, there should be no need to adjust everything. If they are taking it for a road test, then by all means, please do, as safety comes first.

No respect for the guy or girl who is fixing your car, not everyone is the same size. The person has to maneuver it into the garage maybe onto a bridge for inspection And its not that your seat can adjust 1000 different positions. And if id would it definitely would have memory

Memory controls are 100% useless when replacing the battery. Car manufacturers never have any kind of simple battery back up for controls set by the user(s). At best, one user might remember to resave all settings once the battery is in, but that's only if they remembered to make the car think they're ready to go before disconnecting the battery.

You can't say whether it can be patched until you pull it out. From looking at it it looks like the hole is less than 1/8 of an inch diameter, that can easily be plugged. People need to learn how to plug their own tires because it is a scam For a shop that sells tires to refuse to plug this and tell you that you need a new tire.

Would this have anything to do with the fact that the socket sizes 9mm, 11mm, 14mm and 15mm do not correspond to any standard metric nut size? 16mm is used for M10 threads but only for ISO nuts - DIN nuts use 17mm. 10mm nut size is for M6 - the commonest size on automotive applications I suspect.

A well designed plastic part can be much better than a badly designed steel part. I read this is on a Dodge Ram and the part is an upper control arm, that handles only a limited load and is paired with a steel reinforcement plate. The material used is frankly impressive in terms of plastics: 50FWF-PA6 (nylon with long strand fiberglass making up half the weight of the part), the datasheet is a monster https://download.basf.com/p1/8a8081c57fd4b609017fd636478c3e5e/en/ULTRAMID%253Csup%253E%25C2%25AE%253Csup%253E_B3WG10. The expected service life exceeds the steel one, that historically had corrosion problems due to the complex shape of the sheet metal part and the weldments, and it performs on par with the far more expensive cast aluminum option.

The same engineers that think plastic engine gaskets and manifolds is a good idea. They all fail prematurely and often with catastrophic results.. Where the regular materials last for decades. Modern cars are built to fail within 5 years.

Spouse used to wash oil pans as a job. If he ran across this, especially a quantity of them, it would have sent him into orbit.

Probably the same sticker guy that worked at the PVC pipe fitting plant, who put the bar code stickers on the area where the glue goes. There is a special place in hell for these people.

Ford probably has a dealer-only sticker remover. They'll only charge $400 to remove them for you!

High performance cars have been fitted with aluminium brake discs for several years. The discs are made from a mix of aluminium and silicon carbide.

This is fine... aluminium alloys and composites can be incredibly strong and durable while retaining lightness. The wheels on land speed record cars like Bloodhound are just aluminium discs with no tyres...I'm talking Aerospace grade aluminium and manufacturing. I wouldn't recommend a metal wheel on a road car 🤣

And they warp when heated to the degree that brakes operate at.

There are a few technologies for aluminum rotors. Some of them (Aluminum Metal Matrix) outperform steel and composite. Some are less performing but still adequate while solving weight and corrosion issues (Keronite). Some are blended with ceramic making them harder and the aluminum helps with heat dissipation and are sometimes used in high performance supercars.

I remember the first stainless steel rotor I encountered. I found out when I tried to resurface it. You can't.

Dad ran an asphalt crew and had magnesium rakes. He brought a damaged rake home and set tiny bits of it on fire. White-hot! Also damaged a little bit of his asphalt driveway, but he knew how to fix it. Just wanted to see magnesium burn. Don't put water on a magnesium fire!!! (He didn't - just warned me not to do it.) Use a properly marked Class D extinguisher, or dry extinguishing powder to cut off oxygen. Scary!

The only thing I know about aluminum is that it's not always happy in the dishwasher or in contact with anything acidic.

Aluminium? You mean that highly inflammable metal? What could go wrong?

Aluminium is not highly flammable. Aluminium powder can burn but so can iron powder.

Stupid console designs seem to be endless these days. I remember one where you have to push down on the catch t release the lid. Okay except the release is made to the lid instead of the housing, So it requires 2 hands to open the console. One to push the release while the other pulls up on the side on the lid. And no, it want' an issue of a broken spring to force the lid up when released. It was just a s***ty design.
