Animals and nature weren't the main reason for the ban, that was safety and order: Each December, police/ambulances/firefighters are constantly getting attacked by people throwing fireworks at them, people are setting cars on fire with fireworks, and hundreds of people each year end up in the ER because of firework accidents. And those problems also cost society lots and lots of money. Some other reasons were the problems fireworks cause for animals, nature, people with lung diseases and people with PTSD. By the way, it's not a total ban, firework shows are still allowed with a permit.

Not really a new thing. I've visited plots that were planted in the 50s to study spacing effects. Likely some existed before that. I have read that Germany tried planting trees very close in the 30s or 40s which rather than increasing yields resulted in essentially toothpicks.
