In fact, 28.2% of Americans say they use food delivery apps at least once a week. Sometimes, delivery workers can pass for comedians with how witty they get when communicating with customers.

Yet, in 2025, the growth of these apps and services is still going strong. DoorDash, Uber Eats, and Grubhub saw an increase of 18% in delivery drivers during the last year.
Grocery delivery services are also expanding their customer base, as apps like Instacart and Shipt have 22% more customers than they had last year. This just shows that more and more people are using these services. Naturally, that means that they require more drivers and delivery workers, so, the "gig economy" is only going to get bigger.

You may think that working as a delivery person is all fun and quippy texts. But for some delivery workers, it can be downright dangerous. In a 2024 survey, respondents who were delivery "gig" workers in New York City said they had been injured on the job. 20.8% even claimed that customers were the ones inflicting the injuries.
Food delivery couriers in Scotland have had similar experiences. Last year, researchers from the University of Strathclyde polled 207 delivery workers, and a staggering 81% said they felt unsafe in their jobs. Sixty percent of workers claimed the mistreatment they were experiencing was racial or ethnic, and 55% had customers unload on them verbally.

Unfortunately, believable. I ordered from a ghanaian restaurant a few years ago and it took forever. We wondered and waited and when he arrived, he looked exhausted and apologized profusely. Police had pulled him over and it took forever. The restaurant later called and apologized again. Like, people...Its not your fault. Its okay he was late. Food was absolutely smashing, the meat was so soft even after warmup.

For many of them, delivering food and groceries is their primary source of income, but it often comes with many challenges, both physical and emotional. Some even report being treated so poorly by customers and other businesses that they no longer feel like humans – more like machines.

Recently, The Guardian talked to a few of these workers, and their experiences seem almost tragic. A Brazilian woman named Marina works for a food delivery app and has a second job, too, to support her 12- and 18-year-old daughters. "I earn more cleaning toilets than I do from being a Deliveroo rider," the woman explained.
Another worker, Rayan from Pakistan, recounted being attacked by teenagers – twice. "[They] were just doing it for fun," he said. "We are invisible and exposed at the same time." Delivery workers in the UK report earning about £300 a week if they're on a pedal bike. Those who own a moped might earn £450.

In 2023, DoorDash representatives said that 90% of their workers do deliveries for fewer than 10 hours per week. Uber claimed that 48% of their "earners" work less than 10 hours a week, and 71% work fewer than 20 hours.

I took a delivery to a guy in a canning factory in Texas. I called up and said he needed to come get his order. He said, "I''ll buzz you up. The machine is off." As I was walking up the stairs, the machine came on - so loud I collapsed on the stairs. The manager came and helped me out and said that I was an idiot to believe that guy when he said it was safe. They all had earplugs AND over-the-ear noise-blocking headsets.

A 2021 Pew Research Center poll showed that nine in 10 Americans have a positive view of "gig economy" jobs, but only 31% believe it's a good way to build a career. Only half of Americans think that a person can make a living working as a food delivery driver.

I use Grub Hub occasionally and the only issue I've had is when they forget an item. In which case you go on the app and they refund you for it (the missing item) - no proof needed. And yes, I know it's a waste of money. But you get free delivery if you use it through your Amazon prime account.

So I ordered some midnight Domino's and the driver used my order to find my name and phone number to text me. He seemed about my age and I got the vibes that he just didn't realize how creepy this can come off, but does this happen often? And should I have gone about it differently?

Girls and women have been socially conditioned to keep boys and men feeling comfortable, don't hurt the ego, don't escalate the situation, be unnecessarily nice, or risk being called a B or retaliated against. Using phrases like "you seem like a nice guy," "lol," "lmao," and multiple smiley faces is an example of this. It's ok to politely but firmly say no and point out the inappropriateness.

Granted, delivery drivers experience all sorts of mishaps. One DoorDash driver recently got into hot water for filming her customer while he was passed out without clothes and the front door was open. Other delivery drivers have admitted to engaging in "less-than-professional communications," while 25% even said they've done the dirty deed in their delivery truck during work hours. Seems like being a delivery driver means there will never be a boring day at work!

Dasher Propositioned Myself And My Partner During And After A Delivery
This happened almost a year ago. This guy was weird from the jump. He showed up for the delivery shirtless, which I thought was odd. I had requested contactless delivery, but he insisted that I meet him downstairs. When I went downstairs to meet him, he said, “You’re so beautiful.” Mind you, I looked like absolute garbage, so this was odd in itself. I said, "Thank you," and "Thanks for the delivery," and started to head back inside. He stopped me and asked if I was single, and I said, “No, I’m hanging out with my partner; she’s just upstairs.”
He then asked if my partner and I wanted any “company,” and I was completely thrown off. I said, “No thanks, but have a good night,” and basically ran back up the stairs. As I was telling my partner what happened, I received the texts.
I immediately reached out to DoorDash, and their solution was that he would be blocked from delivering to me again during his review period. I seem to remember that the customer support specialist implied that his account could be removed, but I don’t have the messages anymore. Super weird stuff.

This sort of thing happened with a Shipt (grocery delivery) driver I had a few times. He misunderstood when the app asked for a pic to confirm delivery and thought it was just for the app. He didn't realize his customers could see it, too, when he would take pics of the ground by his car just before driving to his destination, until I told him. To be fair to him, he still took a picture of the actually delivered order and sent it to the customers.

I do get the occasional compliment from a delivery driver about the selection of house plants in our front porch, and their different coloured leaves and their flowers. It makes the drivers smile, and it makes me smile when they compliment me. It's only a small porch, by the way, not some huge greenhouse type thing!

Not doordash but I remember ordering food one night and the driver arrived with his pants open, no underwear and his hard d**k in full size (eurgh) Unfortunately I used to order from this specific restaurant a lot and I think he delivered me a few times before but nothing creepy happened then.
