Feminist Accuses English Language Of Being Sexist, Gets Brilliantly Schooled By Linguist

This linguist isn't very good at critical thinking, lol. His own arguments support her thesis. "He" meaning "this/here" and "She" meaning "that/there" actually still does show male subject preference. "He" is the subject and "she" the object. "This" meaning "me/here" and that meaning "her/there." Same with "man" and "woman." "Man" was the default human and "woman" means wife of the default human. Which means females were not even considered human, just the property of other humans (males). It is quite true that historically and even today, we consider males the default human. Whenever there is a protest of mostly men (like in Egypt, for example) the media says "Egyptians protested." But if mostly women protest (like in when Italian women protested their president) the media says "Italian women protested." Males are still used as the default graphic in most anatomical diagrams, even though females are the majority of the human population.

Thank you for saying this! I love language and facts and learning, but when he is so smug and self-righteous it really takes the fun out of learning new information. "Clapbacks," or whatever this is, is not the way forward. It is unnecessarily rude. I hope this guy is a student and not a professor who shames students about what they don't know or what they think they know.

The linguist might be correct, but can't we be more classy in making arguments? Why do we have to stoop to sounding superior? I love an argument that puts the facts out there without swearing. Of course, language changes over time and swearing is become commonplace and accepted, even among academicians, but I long for academic civility.

This Is What Happens When You Don't Hire A Wedding Photographer

The cost of weddings is completely out of hand. Sadly, people hardly blink an eye at spending huge amounts on engraved napkins but then they want to cut costs by using friends and family to do the professional services like photography, music, the cake. Either way, professional or amateur, you could have results you love or results you'll regret. Sadly, there's no guarantee. We were married in 2007 and DID use a professional photographer, who happened to be a family member. His pictures were technically beautiful, but they all look so still and formal and very old fashioned poses. During the photo session, I would say I wanted a picture of all of us doing this or that in casual and fun poses and he just didn't want to do it, snapping a quick pick to make me happy. Meanwhile, our friends and family snapped away on their own cameras. So, we had back to back comparisons of the same poses and the differences were too minimal to even notice. The amateurs shots were gorgeous too!
