It's not that teachers of kids that young were going to specifically going to teach kids about it, but this is forbidding any mention of it.

It gets better, but the first few seasons of NCIS. DiNozzo 'flirts' (if you can call it that) with a woman, who is annoyed at first but comes to like it as he persists. The writers must have realized it, because he got way better and eventually became one of my favorite characters. Marvel, especially those SUPER obvious 'girl power' moments in Infinity War and Endgame. Also, Captain Marvel was just Marvel patting themselves on the back for having a female main character. Any book/movie/whatever where either of them (but especially the girl) first falls in love because of physical attraction. Especially when he's a complete jerk but she's just like 'I can't stand him and he's so horrible to me, but I just can't stop being attracted to him' and they inevitably end up together.

There's this guy I sort of knew from high school and he said in front of my friend and I that he wanted to go into music education. I leaned over and whispered to my friend that it's truly scary that he'll go anywhere near kids. She agreed and said that he gave her crackhead vibes, but I said he gave me creeper vibes. I never really interacted with him, but he's always struck me as thinking he's better than everyone else, and I heard he made a rape joke before. I don't have proof for any of it, but I hope he never goes into education because I'd rather trust my gut without proof than wait for proof.

I know, right? My aunt was talking about not thinking books with LGBTQ+ characters were appropriate for, say, 10 year olds, because it might 'influence them' or something like that. Representation might make people realize their sexuality, but it won't change it. Just like I'm not going to change my faith just because there's minimal Muslim representation now, or like I'm not going to become trans just because I read a book with a genderfluid character. And I only read books with bisexual people after I figured out I'm bi--I didn't even know bisexuality existed before that.

NTA. My aunt has said homophobic things around me (not knowing that I'm bi), even though I wouldn't necessarily consider her homophobic (she doesn't approve of being LGBTQ+, but she would never treat someone differently because of it). It feels horrible, like being hollowed out inside. I couldn't imagine what it would feel like with someone being so outright homophobic.

See, and this is why I believe the Bible has to be interpreted differently according to the time it's read in. For example, in the passage where God tells Abraham to sacrifice his son, it was completely normal for people to sacrifice their children to the other gods they believed in. By stopping Abraham before he could do it, God was proving that He wouldn't ask us to harm others, that He is compassionate. That passage just seems so weird and wrong to us because we don't understand the time it happened in. Similarly, maybe at one point it was best to have children, but that's clearly changed now and we shouldn't think that the words stay the same with such a drastically different time.

Schools are horrible for this type of stuff. As a woman, I learn more from this sort of stuff than health class. And when I came out as bi, my mom didn't want me to watch tiktoks and stuff pertaining to my sexuality because of explicit stuff (I was in 10th grade at the time) and I just thought, How else am I going to learn how to have sex--especially safe sex--with another woman? My health teacher in 7th grade made it through the whole sex ed unit without actually saying how straight people have sex.

I actually didn't realize I was 'gifted' until 7th grade when the health teacher said that we were lucky if we didn't need to study. I just thought that the other kids didn't pay good enough attention.

I don't know how to put effort in for an extended period of time, because I've barely ever had to study, and when I do study it's just to go over flashcards a time or two and I'm good. It's made me lazy, and it will be horrible when I do finally have to study. Also, it's become my identity. Kids in school know me as 'the smart girl' and the only time they have any interest in me is when they think I can help them with school work. The only compliment I get most of the time, even from my family, is that I'm smart. Maybe it would feel more like a compliment if I had to work for the good grades, but I don't and I've heard that compliment so many times it's lost meaning. You get to be too hard on yourself. I start getting nervous about my grade when it drops to a 95. Both my parents and I have gotten better with it recently, but a B- or lower on anything is something to talk about.

It's not that easy; studying is a skill developed over time, and every person has a different way to study that works best for them. The kids who never had to study haven't developed that skill and don't know what works best for them.

I entered a culture were everyone, teachers, parents, relatives etc valued me for my smarts and so I used that as my yardstick to value other people for a long time. Nowadays I'm more interested in who shows compassion, loyalty, dedication, generosity, humor, etc Had to work really hard to break the filters.
