We are literally using this as a "DON'T" in a group focused on how to call white people out on their privilege, both obvious and nuanced. You are an example of both. The blackface feels like obvious privilege. Beyond that, you had an opportunity to speak to these women, ask their opinion, amplify their voices? Instead, you literally painted over them by highlighting your painted face. That is some nuanced level narcissistic privilege if I've ever seen it.

By donning makeup to bring attention to tribal peoples, this person is implying that (1) the tribal people cannot represent themselves, (2) changing her topical appearance is all that's required to represent these peoples and their cultures, and (3) that her white view on their tribes is relevant to their realities, let alone that it's helpful. This whole project centers whiteness, undermines Black and brown experience and voices, and promotes white global dominance.

This article should have been aptly called "Caucasian Journalist Photoshops Face to look like Indigenous African Tribal Women", and technically, that would be the end of the story. It's cool yes, but bodes little (if no) bearing on awareness. If I photoshopped my face to look like various comic superheroes, or celebrities or even a caucasian, it would make me an experimental artist, not an awareness champion. This seems more like a personal photo-manipulation project, which in and of itself, is perfectly fine. The awareness and cultural appropriation bit? Not so much.

I do not understand why you couldn't raise awareness of these cultures by using the actual photographs that inspired you, instead of putting yourself in them? This is cultural appropriation, and even though your efforts may have been in good faith, I find that your own photos are taking away from the beauty of what you are trying to showcase. Do not overshadow the importance of the message you want to send to the world with a "fun idea."
