So a man who's tired of looking at traditional pictures of nude, skinny, conventionally attractive, completely hairless women makes a photoshoot of nude, skinny, conventionally attractive, completely hairless women but from ~unconventional~ angles. And because the angle makes them look not conventionally attractive, the worst thing that could befall a member of the female species, it's art. Oh no, wait, it's the fact that we can still find the conventionally attractive women 'beautiful'. Riiight. Such horrible distortion. So grotesque. The horror. Artists sure are getting uncreative lately.

So many people are upset because "pretty" women were made "ugly". That sentiment just feeds into the notion that pretty is the only way women should be. But I also think that naked women as art is so played out. How about finding new ways to photograph women with clothes on. THAT would be unique.

I guess the point is to try to teach that beauty does not matter, and that while these distorted portraits and unflattering, that's exactly the point. It's not beautiful, it's not normal looking. Plus, you know that these women are probably really beautiful, you're just not seeing the right angle. I suppose, they're trying to teach new angles of beauty, all the angles are beautiful - and so, nothing needs to be beautiful, because it already is. Basically, that it doesn't need to be flattering, and that we should stop rejecting the typical photos we see of women (face on, make-up on, trying to look appealing), of women trying to make themselves the normal way of beautiful, rather than just being themselves through and through to every aspect (from every angle), themselves.

I don't think that this photo shoot was in any way meant for kids, and I agree - there is a lot of (ab)use of Disney characters in campaigns, some worthy and some unworthy of our attention. However, I would make a case in defence of this series of photos. They portray issues with which we should concern ourselves as a society, I hope you agree. It is rather well thought through (Elsa was indeed depressed and possibly suicidal as a character, Aurora was raped in the original fairy tale, Ariel's connection with pollution was particularly inventive). From purely an art perspective, the fact these images evoked such a response in you means that they are doing their job. In the west, art has, since the 19th century, been seen as a vessel of emotions. If it can make you feel anything, good!

They aren't in any Disney movies or plastered all over Disneyland.They're not displayed in schools, day cares or school buses.We don't need to tell the kids about them! And this whole "debased" thing: Are people reduced in value if they've been raped, beaten, exposed to pollutants, or have a disease? No? Then the photos don't debase. Yes? Speaking as a Disney fanatic who LOVES the princess movies and has lithographs and dolls of them all over her office... I am also an artist and feminist, and I think that this series is a very valuable one. Obviously I'm not going to show it to my 9yo daughter. But though I love escaping from reality, I will most certainly be teaching her about how to protect herself from these very things, and if there's ever a situation where she can't, to stand up for herself afterwards. These issues are so prevalent today that they need to be strongly addressed, and this is a very powerful way to do just that. To realize that young women's lives aren't all flowers and sunshine.

WTF is wrong with people? How in god's name is it ok to perpetuate the Disney princess myth, and teach girls that a prince will swoop them off their feet and take care of them forever? That kind of thinking is the basis for secrecy and denial later in life. There was a child at 04:05 with pigtails, it's possible that it was a little girl. I didn't spot any other women either but maybe someone with more keen eyes did. Anyways, as you know, usually it's accepted that male is the default and it's 'easier' for people to relate to 'him' rather than 'her'. Half of the story took place in an office setting and again, it's accepted that male is the default when it comes to business, so naturally it was a father rather than a mother who was working the bland, monotonous office job. In all honesty I don't see why they couldn't make one of the important characters female - maybe the child or even the violinist. Not even the teacher was female, and that's a position traditionally held by women, especially in the lower grades with the younger children. You're right for questioning the film. Although it had a nice message, visuals and was emotional, it was a tad clichéd.
