With Google at our fingertips, we may think that we know it all. But studies have found that access to Google has actually worsened our information recall, aka our memory, which may pose a problem in learning new knowledge. While Google creates a false security that we understand something, in order to truly educate ourselves, we need to move beyond quick searches and look for knowledge in ways that challenge and enrich our memory.

To help you with that, our Bored Panda team scoured the Inspiring Facts subreddit for the best they have to offer. Your healthy dose of new knowledge is waiting for you just a scroll away!

At our old apartment people used to place their older books or dvds in a public area so others could go and grab the discards. I got a great cookbook once that I still use.

I'm amazed at the number of books that get thrown away -- I rescue what I can and give them to a charity shop. But perhaps I should be more amazed at the number of trashy books that ae published.

My husband has been involved with The EAA Young Eagles program, run by the Experimental Aircraft Association that offers free introductory flights to young people of any background. Being a private or commercial pilot used to be very exclusive - but now many more women and people other than white men are joining the ranks, some because of simple exposure to the possibility. Love this!

According to the post on Reddit: His name is P.K. Mahanandia and her name is Charlotte Von Schedvin. He was/is an artist who had shot to fame for his portraiture work by drawing the portrait of Indira Gandhi. A really interesting part of this story is that Charlotte was the first one to undertake a long journey; she was a fan of his work and had driven for 22 days in a van to India from her university in London just to meet P.K. and have her portrait done by him in 1975. They fell in love and actually married in India. Charlotte returned to Sweden and asked him to come with her, but he decided one day that he would go on his own, and they kept in touch through letters. When he was ready, he didn’t have enough money for a plane ticket, so he sold all of his belongings and bought a bicycle. He set off on January 27, 1977 and made it to Europe by May 28, 1977, where he was able to complete the rest of the journey to Göteborg by train.

He is now an adviser of arts and culture for the Swedish government and a well-known artist in Sweden. He and Charlotte have two adult children, Siddhartha and Emelie. "I did what I had to, I had no money but I had to meet her. I was cycling for love, but never loved cycling. It's simple."

On 911 we knew that America would invade Iraq, no matter the cost. We all saw how the government lied to the nation and created a divide that has yet to heal. The Iraq war drained America, both in treasure and moral standing and America has never recovered. But hey, they had all those Freedom Fries to enjoy.

Okay, but nobody's gonna comment on how this cop literally tried to coerce people into commiting a crime, which is SUPER shady and possibly illegal? There's almost certain chance the money would be ultimately taken by some impoverished person with nothing to lose who only wanted to keep themself alive for a few more days. And pretending to be disabled is just a cherry on top. Yeah, it's a feel-good story yadda yadda, but that cop's behavior sickens me. Not to mention his victim wouldn't even go to jail because claiming entrapment is a legit way of defense against this.

Are fraternal twins not a 'thing' anymore? I was always taught it was possible for twins to look entiely different, have sifrent or same genders etc depending on how the egg divides, when it does or if there are two eggs. I've even heard of women getting pregnant while pregnant.. though rare.

Two thirds of twins are fraternal. This is not a one in a million situation, but rather in a mixed race family with twins, this is the more likely outcome.

It isn't one in a million, they are fraternal twins, like two thirds of all twins, so their chances of having different skin to es is exactly the same as singleton siblings having different skin tones. And that happens all the time. Stop being weird and racist BP.

I guess it depends, you could say that you always save a life over an inanimate object. No matter how beautiful or priceless the object is, the life, especially an innocent one, is more valuable and deserving of being saved. However, it kind of depends on the life they’re asking you to save. Of course I would save a dog, or any animal, or a child. I’d also save another adult, but that’s where it kind of depends. If the question was whether I’d save the Mona Lisa or Hitler, and I know for a fact he is Hitler, there’s absolutely NO doubt about it, then Mona and I would be the ones walking out of the museum together, and Hitler’s on his own. Gee sorry, too bad, buh-bye Adolph. In that scenario, I don’t think anyone would blame me for saving the Mona Lisa, because I would be doing the world a favor by ridding it of a monster like Hitler. That’s the thing with such questions. The world isn’t black and white, and there are a load of variables to consider in such a situation. Yes, I would save the dog, who wouldn’t. But change one component of the question, such as the identity of the life in the scenario, and the whole thing becomes more complicated. Just like real life is complicated (and just like the way I complicated a simple question, right?).

This question with the dog is perfect. If she were asked whether she saved the paintings or a fruitfly, or whether she saved a child or the artifacts, in both cases, only a very dense person would pick the fruitfly over the culrural heritage, and only a monster would pick lifeless objects over the human life.

BeesEelsAndPups, I'm going to be picky about wording. It's *believed* to be rare. It's only investigated when things aren't quite as expected, eg reproductive organs not having the same DNA as taken from a cheek swab. The vast majority of people don't have their DNA tested, and the people who do, it's normally just from a cheek swab. We do not know how many people are chimeras because we aren't looking for it.

I'm curious where this is. I've never heard that you DON'T need a DNA test for public assistance in the US, but I can't believe that if you do, (1) I've never heard of it or (2) that it didn't create tons of controversy when they first implemented it.

Just hope you get to sit with one of the quiet ones that accept the inevitable and just sort of fade away. Some people refuse to accept, and will fight it. And some people will fight it so hard they'll break their own bodies in the process. Ask me how I know... 😳😱 Of course, we *always* smile and tell the relatives that "she died peacefully in her sleep" because they don't want or need to know what really happened.

Sometimes the dying person waits until they are alone. At the hospital, I sat with my dad for 4 days, round the clock. I just had to go home to shower, change and eat something other than a sandwich. I was barely in the door 20 minutes after I left him, to get a phone call he had passed away.

Three years later I was hospitalised and my parents went all the way back to the UK to get one of those sandwiches for me. The cafe owner sweetly obliged and gave my parents some rolls and a tub with the sandwich filling - it turned out to be a ready-made tub of chicken and sweetcorn sandwich filling from Sainsbury’s. I still don’t understand why they didn’t try harder to preserve the ‘magic’ of those sandwiches 😂

Are you advocating refusing medical treatment for people who don't look and act like you? I worked all my life with people with severe disabilities and none of them ever wanted to die just because it wasn't convenient for people around them. In fact, they were as joyful to be around as they were happy to be alive if you learned to look beyond the externals. And what are your criteria for letting them die if you don't judge that they will "never be able to live"? I've worked with people in wheelchairs, people confined to beds, and people on respirators who were ever so glad to be alive and I'm glad I didn't have to deal with people who had opinions about it being "selfish and cruel to keep them alive."

It would be interesting to study how many animal species seem to know and how many don't. We know that a couple of animal species act very differently before an earthquake, but there might also be many that don't.

This is an awesome story, but unfortunately not quite accurate. The evacuation was ordered because of seismic foreshocks which steadily increased over time up to a magnitude of a 4.8 quake and then a 5.6 quake. Animal behavior alone would not have caused an evacuation, although animals certainly sensed even more disturbances than humans did.

Wasn't random. My dad had a similar experience snorkeling in Montenegro hours before the devastating earthquake in North Macedonia back in '78 or '79. He said he saw the entire seabed of living things retreat into the depth an hour before the earthquake was registered

This went hand in hand with the beginnings of reconstructive surgery. It was an effort to help the men adjust to civilian life without being shunned because of their injuries. BTW, in any previous war, they would’ve died from such wounds, but medicine and surgery had gotten good enough by the early 20th century to save their lives. Then the doctors were faced with helping the men blend back into society with the scars from those wounds, and both prosthetics and plastic surgery were born.

You see his face after the IED hit, and it's gone. Just gone. You turn the pages and you see the slow progress. The last picture is him smiling. D**n did it wreck me.

There was life *before* phones too. I understand teenagers being glued to their smartphones because they probably started using one before they learned to walk, but I'm always surprised to see people who are 40+ and can't seem to be away from their smartphone for a minute. It makes me wonder how they survived in an era when those things didn't exist.

Brown and black people, women, the physically challenged, the autistic (just imagine how bad they had it, just because they were different and maybe a little awkward), you name it. As long as they didn’t look or act or speak exactly like the favored group, they became “others”, the “them” of “us and them”. They were barred from developing their intellect and talents, in favor of the ruling class, the conquerors, the other gender, who may have had some great minds amongst them, but had a hell of a lot MORE entitled idiots who didn’t care about learning anything, because they were rich and didn’t have to, so had no motivation, BUT could not stand to be proven wrong by one of the “others” who was simply smarter. How stupid they were to not want to develop EVERYONE’s mind and talent, because all that did was continually hold the human race back, over and over. The knuckledraggers, who always have to be right even when they’re dead wrong, are STILL doing it, only they have to be more subtle about it.

You sure the bricks weren’t included? For wooden home models, they sent every last needed plank and two by four—-pre-cut, and they even numbered them—-to finish the house, according to the accompanying instruction manual, so why wouldn’t they send all the necessary bricks for brick models? I can see not sending supplies for modifications that weren’t offered in the catalog, but why wouldn’t they send everything needed for the basic construction of the house?

My town has entire neighborhoods where most of the houses were kit houses. The rooms were much smaller than what houses built nowadays have. And many feature a telephone nook where the landline phone sits with room for a phone book. It was a good way to have a home for cheap, and you could hire local workers to do the building or you could do the work yourself

I am amazed at how fast some folks age, in comparison to others. I don’t know why, I mean is it genetics, lifestyle, youthful outlook, plain meanness, a combination of any or all? Is it that some people just give up, or get too set in their ways, or have an old fart attitude? Your grandmother must’ve been one of the lucky ones who stayed perennially younger than her years, while the “old dear” down the street wasn’t so lucky. I hope I’m lucky enough to age more like your grandmother than the “old dear”, tbh.

Often the babies went trough shady agencies to the US it is not uncommon for twins to get separated. I think they were lucky to grow up with parents who went to great pains to adopt a child

BP, I'm doing your job filling in info. A hero cat saved its owner, Scott White, in the middle of the night when a fire broke out. Surprisingly, the owner's dog was fast asleep, leaving the cat to take on the life-saving duty. When Scott woke up in the middle of the night, he thought his cat just wanted a midnight stroke. But when the cat jumped on his chest, Scott knew something was wrong. So he followed the cat downstairs, realizing the house was on fire. Scott had left a pot on the stove before going to bed, and it was just a few minutes away from turning into a full-blown fire. "I guess we found out the real hero is the cat," said Scott, as he watched his dog sleep right through the night.

I have a very alert and reactive dog - lets me know whenever anything is going on. However, he sleeps like he's been knocked unconscious. Could have a party in the room and he'd sleep through it. I think he's so alert and into everything that he exhausts himself.

And they went 6 MPH and about 20 miles. UPDATE: I ALWAYS fact-check myself! Apparently there was at least one electric car that went 87 miles maintaining an average speed of 23 MPH. A Studebaker Electric sold 1800 units with a car that went 80 miles at 21 MPH; that's actually pretty good comparison to gas cars of its day!

This is a petrol powered motor scooter - first made in New York City. The battery/coil arrangement was, as far as I can figure out, the improved ignition system, upgraded from the original flywheel magneto. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Autoped and https://onlinebicyclemuseum.co.uk/1918-eveready-autoped-scooter/. 125 mpg, apparently: https://x.com/PeterDiamandis/status/1099160077376745472?lang=ar-x-fm

British Man Was Struggling To Sell His £800k Six-Bedroom House. So He Decided To Sell Raffle Tickets Online For £2 Tickets

Man outside and inside a house sorting papers, illustrating inspiring facts better than watching the news moments.

After struggling to pay £2,000 a month mortgage for the house that originally costed him £435,000, Dunstan put the house up in the market for sale. But when he found no buyer, he decided to raffle £500,000 worth of tickets online for £2 with which people could get the chance to win the property.

He managed to sell 186,000 tickets with which he cleared his debts and finally handed over the house keys to a 41-year old factory worker who had also participated in buying the ticket.

Math isn't mathing here. He raffled "500k worth of tickets", but the actual value was 372k (ok, maybe he did not sell all of them), and with 372k he "cleared his debts" by selling the house at a lower value than the 435k purchase price, a fraction of the roughly 800k current value... So, either there is something off with the reporting, or ìthis is not an "unbelievable inspiring fact"; is just a dude who is a complete idiot when it comes to money selling off his house at a loss through barely legal means. I am curious to know about the legality of this, he would have needed a Gambling Commission license to sell tickets (free tickets are ok though), that he likely had not because I found a remark about the Gambling Commission cracking down on house raffles after being notified of some illegal ones.

He bought the house then acquired equity via payments towards his mortgage. We don’t know how long he’d been making payments nor how much equity he had. His debts were the remainder of what he owed, NOT the cost he bought it for or its current value. Also, raffles aren’t usually considered gambling. Mostly because the revenue is counted as donations. So not sure how how he worked that out, because I’m not aware of UK tax law and their gambling laws. But he obviously did.

From Reddit: After seeing the poster, Tony has been flooded with phone calls and emails from thousands of people, asking him to be their pal. People from America, Germany, Holland, Australia, Egypt, India, and Japan have been in touch, inviting him on road trips to the U.S. or for an afternoon drinking gin and tonics. "They’ve sent me pictures of their kids, their pets, told me about their aspirations, and told me they are thinking of me. I got an email from a local teacher asking if children in her class could write me letters. I got in touch with her straight away and said it would be delightful. I would love that. When I started responding, they were coming in thick and fast. I would say about four or five a minute. The thing is, I can’t respond now, as my email account seems to have crashed. A red message came up saying there was some sort of error and it needs to be reset.”

What peopke shooting geese ignore: Geese have strong family bonds. If one is shot out of the flock, another will grieve. So if you are determined to k**l a goose for your meal, make sure to k**l the entire flock and make sure every goose is consumed entirely.

Although the parents found it funny and sweet, the gesture meant a lot more to the pizza delivery guy. A New Zealand newspaper had published the campaign under its April Fools’ Day Special section. The ad promised a free BMW to the first person who showed up at a dealership with their own car and the newspaper ad in hand. Most people assumed it was just another April Fools’ prank, until one woman actually took the company at its word. Tianna Marsh drove her 15-year-old station wagon to the showroom at 5:30 a.m. local time. To her delight, she was rewarded with a brand-new BMW worth nearly US $37,000, complete with the cheeky plate “NOF00L.” “We wanted to turn the tables and reward the first person who was willing to take the chance,” said BMW spokesman Ed Finn. The company later uploaded the moment to its YouTube channel, with the message: “Happy April Not Such a Fool.”

"The day of the “funeral” arrived and right before he lowered his beloved Bentley into its freshly dug grave, he stopped the burial and went on to reveal the real reason behind such a stunt: “People have condemned me for trying to bury a million dollar Bentley. The fact is, most people bury something a lot more valuable than my car. People bury hearts, livers, lungs, eyes, and kidneys. This is absurd. There are so many people out there waiting for a transplant and you will bury healthy organs that can save so many lives. This is the biggest waste in the world. My Bentley is worthless in comparison to life giving organs. There is no wealth more valuable than an organ, because there is nothing more valuable than life. I officially announce I am an organ donor this week. I’m an organ donor, are you? Tell your family.”

I would definitely try to talk him out of wearing those heels. Those are bad for the joints and increases the risk of falling, as the ankle is less stable. I talked anyone out of wearing high heels if anybody would listen to me.

"In 2016, Dan Peterson’s wife had just passed away. He was severely depressed and didn’t find meaning in living. However, he would still go grocery shopping for himself in Georgia, where he first met Norah, the 4-year-old girl. The conversation between them went like this: “Hi, old person…” “Well hello, little lady! And how old are you today?” “A hug?!” asked Dan. “Absolutely!” he continued. Norah’s mother, Tara Wood, later found out that the elderly man had been suffering from a broken heart and that sleeping through the night had been a challenge for him. But Dan confided that since the moment he met Norah, he had been sleeping peacefully again. Over the years, Dan and Norah grew closer, celebrating birthdays, holidays, and other occasions together. They would meet at least once a week with countless hugs."

There was a series on the ABC (in Aus) I think it was called "Nursing Home for 4 year olds" or something like that. The children would visit a Nursing Home and the series showed the beautiful, special relationships between the Seniors and the children. Would highly recommend it as something to watch.

"Ken Benbow, 94, lost his wife Ada, 71, last August. Since then, he has gone to bed with a photo of his wife. The 94-year-old has been living in a nursing home in Preston, United Kingdom, for a while now. Watching him sleep that way, his caregiver, Tobin, decided to surprise him with a photo of his wife printed on a pillow, so that he could hug her and fall asleep. Ken broke down in tears when the caregiver finally gifted him that pillow. “I’ve got you a present,” Tobin said. “What’s that, darling?” asked Ken, before he received the pillow. But after seeing his wife's photo on the pillow, he started crying. The caregiver held his hand and said, “I thought this might be a bit better than your photograph.” Ken responded to Tobin with a hug."

"Growing up with a changing face due to cherubism, a rare genetic condition, doctors said that her head was as heavy as a cannonball. Victoria became the target of intense bullying and the world’s judgment, including verbal a***e from strangers and children mocking her with cruel names like “Fat Chin” or “Desperate Dan.” Despite that, Victoria never lost her strength. She refused to undergo surgery and instead embraced her appearance. She later met with a UK charity, Changing Faces, where she connected with people going through similar challenges. That gave her the confidence that she needed. She’s now a role model for people with similar genetic conditions and for those living with facial differences."

"It was her 33rd wedding anniversary when Mary Strand was given a gift by her husband, Dave... "a beautiful wedding ring." But one day, Mary lost that ring when she was in her bathroom and it slipped off her finger, right into the toilet. "It went right down the drain. I was thinking, 'He'll never buy me another ring'... I felt really bad because it was a gift," revealed Mary. But a decade later, an employee named John Tierney, who was a mechanical maintenance manager at the Rogers, Minnesota, plant spotted something sparkly in the debris. Noticing the ring's unique design, the Metropolitan Council posted the lost-and-found ring on social media with its picture so that the rightful owner could identify it. After hundreds of reshares, the ring alert reached Mary's feed. She immediately contacted the authorities with the photo of her lost ring. When jewelry examiners matched her photo with the ring, it was returned to Mary."

Sadly, hers is not a very "inspiring" story, more a sad one. She survived that day, but said she was left traumatised for the rest of her life. She ended up developing cancer which she blamed on the dust, and died having racked up massive medical debt

She of course ended up dying a few years after the boy was born. It was all about having a male heir to pass their land on to. At the time, India had no age cap on IVF. The ethics of that are highly debated. I personally think it’s gross, on various levels.

If you ever have an encounter with a swarm of bees, DO NOT SPRAY THEM WITH WATER. Call a beekeeper, they will calm the swarm with a gentle cloud of smoke, then coax the swarm into a container. They will get the swarm into a hive

Ironically, if you played your cards right, you could do this without being stung by the swarm. Gotta keep in mind that bees would really only attack things interacting with them or the queen. Even if they did frenzy when the car started moving, they wouldn't inherently blame that on the person driving, all the bees know is that this giant metal animal is kidnapping their queen (Or something along those lines)

"A car parks outside the Waffle House when an elderly man is seen coming out and trying to cross the parking lot. The next moment, three women from the staff rush toward him with bright smiles, hold his hand, and gently walk with him. Backstory: One of the waitresses emphasized that they hadn't seen the elderly man in a while, but he used to visit the Waffle House frequently along with his wife. One of the reasons for his absence was moving into a home. The woman who uploaded the video has claimed to be the elderly man’s granddaughter. “This is my sweet grandpa. He and my grandmother always frequented here! She’s moved into a home now, but I’m glad to see he’s back and feeling all the love.”"

To make this make more sense, the child was autistic and refused to drink out of any cup other than a cup that looked identical to this. "“People think Ben will drink when he’s thirsty. Unfortunately, that is not the case,” said Marc. He further added that since the broken cup, both of them had to make emergency trips to A&E due to severe dehydration that suggests ‘everything will NOT be okay.’ With the cup being out of production for several years now, Marc turned to social media, aka Twitter, to seek support from the online community. And the response has been overwhelming."

"Brent Chapman, now 34, lost his vision when he was just 13 years old after a rare allergic reaction to ibuprofen called Stevens-Johnson syndrome. Since then, his days have been occupied with trips to multiple doctors aiming to restore his vision, but he would return with no luck. Then Brent met Dr. Greg Moloney, an ophthalmologist in Vancouver, who suggested a 1960s-developed procedure, 'tooth-in-eye,' where Brent's tooth would be pulled, flattened, and a small hole drilled in the center to fill with a prosthetic lens. The tooth would then be placed at the front of his eye, allowing him to see through the new lens. The procedure is performed as it decreases the chances that the body will perceive the object as foreign, as Brent explained. Brent woke up from the surgery with positive results. "I feel fantastic. Vision comes back and it's a whole new world," he said."
