Most people would likely agree that the feeling of great annoyance—often over relatively minor things—is quite universal; people don’t need to speak the same language or be from the same area to know just how aggravating a sock sliding halfway off in a shoe can be.
Similar annoying occurrences are often depicted on the ‘Mildly Infuriating’ subreddit, which currently boasts over 7.4 million members from all over the place. For many of them, the sub is a source of comfort that they’re not alone in being annoyed by the daily inconveniences in life, and if you’re curious to see what said inconveniences entail, scroll down to find some examples on the list below; but do it at your own risk, as they might leave you mildly infuriated, too.
Below you will also find Bored Panda’s interviews with Emeritus Professor of Psychology Joseph Hellige and Professor of Psychology in the Department of Psychological and Brain Sciences at The University of Delaware, Philip Gable, who were kind enough to answer a few of our questions about why we find certain things mildly infuriating.

When You Tear Exactly Where It Says To, But The Bag Remains Sealed
Sometimes it doesn’t take much for us to become annoyed, or say, mildly infuriated; something as simple as uneven or unmatching items or gaps in places they shouldn’t be can make us noticeably irritated. The answer to why that happens seemingly lies in the way our brain is wired.
“In said examples, networks in the anterior cingulate cortex and connected regions activate when our expectations are violated, when we see or experience something different from what we expect,” Emeritus Professor of Psychology Joseph Hellige explained. “As simple as a gap when we didn’t expect one and as complicated as an insult when we expected praise. Registering a deviation from expectation is largely automatic.”
The Pocket Size In Female vs. Male Levi’s Jeans. I‘Ve Just Bought The "Male" Model Which Fits Me Perfectly. Why Do Jeans Manufacturers Think That Women Don’t Deserve Large Pockets?
Apparently pockets "spoil the line" of the clothing, which is more important on women because as you know we're purely ornamental.
It's so they'll have no choice but to buy a handbag. It's always about money.
Load More Replies...I only purchase men's pants/jeans and men's cargo shorts these days. XD
In a previous post where I asked where to find women's jeans with real pockets, I was told a few brands that offer them. I went to look and either they are very particular cargo-type cuts or some rare high-waisted jeans (another subject) which do not suit all body types (same with men's pants) because they were designed for tall women. So, no, women's pants with real pockets are really not easy to find.
American Eagle has a good variety of styles & full size pockets! Great size selection, too. I’m tall but they have petite and other lengths.
Load More Replies...The theory is that manufacturers of women’s clothing have been sort of in cahoots with the handbag/purse people, and keep the tiny clothes pocket thing going to sell more purses. Might be some truth to that, at least it would explain the massive resistance against making women’s pockets bigger.
what about making small pockets for men and sell them handbags too
Load More Replies...My dad doesn’t get it and he keeps complaining about how I either hold everything in my hand or carry purses or just bring nothing
Get him the women's version as a Christmas or birthday gift. Perhaps make sure he can exchange it at the store later, we're not THAT horrible, after all...
Load More Replies...I have a lovely pair of women's Levi jeans and can say with great glee that my hands go in the pockets so far some of my arm goes too. And my phone fits with room to spare. And do I put my hands way down deep when out in public? You BET I do. And yes, it is ladylike because I am a lady and I do it.
This is beyond outrageous at this point in time. Dear industry, do you understand what a pocket actually is?
I'm irritated by that seam across the men's pocket at the height where the women's pocket ends. Fellow (hobby) seamsresses, do you have an explication for this ---on the inside? Looks to me as if there was more fabric but closed by that seam??
I think it's a small pocket inside the larger one. Lots of jeans have double pockets.
Load More Replies...That’s 100% not true. I have sweats from Fashion Nova and Nike, pajama pants from Calvin Klein and Skims, all with full size pockets.
Load More Replies...Women carry purses and bags, men need space in their pockets to carry phone, keys, wallet etc. Tho I must confess I am a woman and hate purses, I would rather fill my jeans pockets than having to drag a bag with me everywhere. My mom calls it "manly" but I guess we just see thing differently
My work jeans have pockets...just took me 2 years to learn they were sewn shut for some ungodly reason
This is why I refuse to buy these ridiculous expensive jeans. I either buy them at Big Box during their monthly sale ($8.95/pair) or at Walmart. Walmart's George brand jeans have amazing HUGE pockets!!
This drives me insane. I want "real" pockets. I want to be able to put my phone in my pocket and feel secure. I don't want to feel like my phone is gonna fall out. So annoying. Ladies, we deserve pockets!
do you want to know what is even more infuriating? Boys clothes have pockets even in babies sizes. And for worse - the girly clothes are tighter and shorter than boys ones in the same size. Like...who needs tight clothes on babies? It is enough you have to dress them, why make it uncomfortable for both sides?
Technical Designer here - although most pocket sizing for women is indeed BS, when it comes to pants, the shorter pocket bag is due to fit. Women's pants are generally much tighter across the hips which means a larger pocket bag will compromise the fit (will get bunched up) and the pocket bag will be unusable anyway.
They also charge 2x the price for women's shirts than men's. It's so wrong
I think the reasons are to 1) objectify women and sexualize them even more than they already are and to 2) sell purses.
No one mentions how ugly pockets are on leggings and other slim-fit pants. I think that one solution would be looser fits. Why are women's body ideals so unrealistic?
I've also heard that it's to force women to buy purses to keep stuff in then instead of the pockets. It's just downright useless and unnecessary.
I hate that women's clothes don't have pockets or much of a pocket my dad heard me complaining about it and said the reason I am mad about it is that my gram always made my pockets bigger or put pockets in my clothes because I refused to carry a purse
Maybe smaller but at least they are real pockets. What frustrates me is totally fake pockets!!!
I heard a conspiracy theory: It's collusion with handbag manufacturers so that we need something else to carry our stuff in.
Old Navy women's jeans have a decent pocket. Still not as deep as the men's but it's better than most.
Lands End women's brands were a perfect fit for me. I had been buying them for years. Suddenly, the pockets changed. That was when they were bought by Sears.
This is one reason why I buy men's jeans and the other reason is that men's jeans are more durable.
Actually don't like pockets that are that deep but a bit deeper than woman's jeans
O don't want a pocket that low, i would make it dmaller, because it looks awfull.
Since I retired, I now wear men's pants and shirts because they have usable pocket for my medical device (I'm diabetic) I am lucky that I know how to alter my clothes - add elastic to waist, remove elastic at ankles. Even women's hoodies with kangaroo pockets don't accommodate a small cellphone!
You know, I don't think ANY woman wears women's Levi's. The behind is just not quite right. And the tummy and the feet holes. Women's jeans turn inside out when you take them off. And if you sweat then your just stuck. This is your life now. Men's Levi's are the best.
I feel like it's due to the pursh companies wanting you to purchase a, "place to store all your things?!"
purse manufacturers and pants manufacturers are in cahoots. if they make smaller pockets in women's pants, perhaps they will be more inclined to purchase a purse?
I work in medical so I just wear my scrub pants even when not at work. They're just baggy cargo pants with plenty of pockets.
Can we normalize not putting back pockets on men's trousers/jeans? We sit on that, can't use it for anything. The back pockets with buttons are the worst.
No. I've carried my wallet in my back left pocket for 40 years and I've never had a problem with sitting down. Maybe your pants are too tight?
Load More Replies...We don’t want big baggy pockets on our tight and sexy jeans! Get a grip. You have a whole purse.
Maybe you don't want the pockets. That's your choice. What about those who would like to have them???
Load More Replies...I am convinced that if enough women demanded pants with larger pockets, and then enough women actually bought them, they would be widely available. It's ridiculous to believe that there's some vast conspiracy to not put larger pockets in women's clothing. Clothing manufacturers are in business to make money.
Those of us who are into fashion don’t care that much about the pockets. It’s only really women who don’t care about fashion. The type that would wear men’s pants anyway. Plus they’re just not being totally honest. I’m wearing skin tight work pants right now. They have pockets. Not as deep as a man’s pocket but I’m also not as tall as an average man either. I’m 5’6”, average male height is like 5’10”. So of course their pockets have a little more space because their legs tend to be longer and they don’t have a purse option. At least we have purses. I doubt if Levi’s even sells purses.
Load More Replies...Just buy the men ones. Find some that fit you and bam. If anyone asks just say your borrowing your brothers.
Women dont want pockets. If they did, they would buy them and the market would shift to reflect that. Stop blaming designers and manufacturers. (And it makes people so mad to hear this that it gets downvoted until it's hidden.)
We would buy them if we could buy them! I just noticed this was a male who automatically gets decent pockets with every pair of pants he buys.
Load More Replies...So what shall we wear? Don't say a dress - so sexist!
Load More Replies..."do not sell"? When has that theory been tested? MAKE the jeans regular pockets and let's just see. Market those babies and watch them sell.
Load More Replies...It's a good thing you're here to explain how to buy clothes to the ladies.

Dr. Philip Gable seconded the idea that said mildly infuriating things get on our nerves because we detect that something is not right or not what we expected. “It’s like when you make an error, but instead of you making the mistake, you detect the mistake in the world around you,” he explained.
“Potentially, the person could perceive that there is a disconnect between what we think is involved, and how we expect things to be. The anterior cingulate cortex is involved in error detection and could be sending the ‘something is wrong’ signal. After that, it is likely how we think about the situation that causes us to hold on to it as negative or bad.”

Nothing Worse Than Rock-Hard Butter, Thin White Bread, And A Whole Lot Of Hunger
Prof. Hellige continued to explain that whether we find certain things or occurrences annoying or pleasurable depends on numerous different brain networks. “For example, the insular cortex is activated when we experience something physically unpleasant, like biting into rancid meat, or psychologically unpleasant, like overhearing someone criticize us.”
According to the expert, the seemingly minor annoyances vary from person to person based on context and life experience. “One person’s annoyance can even be another’s pleasure. The dissonance in Stravinsky’s Rite of Spring might grate on my nerves but be beautiful to a more trained mind.”

Dr. Hellige explained that the level of how strongly a person feels about certain annoyances relates to relative levels of activation among brain areas, including those in the limbic system and prefrontal cortex.
“The level of irritation also tends to increase when a person already feels stressed or is overly tired. Parents know this well; the never-ending questions from our three-year-old are a pleasure when we’re well-rested and unhurried, but after two nights of little sleep with a work project overdue, the same behavior becomes irritating.”

According to Dr. Gable, another factor that is likely to influence the extent to which a person finds something to be (mildly) infuriating is how much a certain situation violates their expectation that something is wrong. “It could be how significant the person sees the problem that enhances the irritation; oftentimes, not having control over the situation can cause it to be more irritating,” he pointed out.

Since no one is immune to annoyances and infuriating things, arguably the only thing we can do is try to manage our emotions. “Perspective talking about the situation would help; for example, ‘it's not that big of a deal’, or ‘it's really not something I should worry about’,” Dr. Gable suggested.
“Try to look at it more objectively: ‘in the long run, correcting that problem wouldn't really matter and might make things worse’. The annoyance may come from the person making a subjective judgment - if they can reduce their judgements, it will likely affect them less.”

Why Does This Always Happen?
Dr. Hellige added that first and foremost, it’s important to try and be well-rested and maintain low levels of stress. “Easy to say, hard to do,” he admitted.
“Try to keep things in perspective,” the professor of psychology continued. “Very few things are actually matters of life and death, but we have inherited some brain regions that aren’t so good at telling the difference. Fortunately, other regions, like our prefrontal cortex, work to slow us down, be reflective, and moderate the effects of some of those other regions. Take a deep breath, and let your prefrontal cortex do its work.”

The reason it’s important to try and manage our reaction to infuriating things—no matter how big or small—is because they often entail stress, which can accumulate and result in detrimental effects to our well-being.
“Every day is full of small annoyances. If we can't control our negative reactions to those small annoyances, then it will completely lower our well-being. Letting go of the things we cannot change would be helpful at maintaining one's well-being,” Dr. Gable suggested.

“Beyond an optimal level of alertness, adding stress takes a toll on our judgment as well as things like blood pressure and heart health more generally,” Dr. Hellige pointed out. “There is no way to avoid all annoyances; nor would we survive long if we weren’t responsive to genuine threats. But, there are well-documented negative consequences of chronic stress. And, whether we realize it or not, constant annoyances over insignificant things add up.”
Luckily, the pictures of mildly infuriating things are arguably not as stressful or annoying as having to deal with such things in real life. So if you feel like they don’t affect you or you know that you can manage your emotions, continue to our previous collections of mildly infuriating things here and here and see what other things might make fellow netizens somewhat infuriated.
