For anyone in this situation, you can search for a TNR (trap, neuter, release) organization in your area. Often times you can just report the animal and some human heros will set humane traps and get the cats neutered/spayed and release them back safely where they were caught. 😺 Edit: just learned there are trap, neuter, vaccinate, and return groups!

Try training your cat to scratch the carpet, it will stand up to a lot more scratching than any kind of furniture. Then try not to trip over your cat when you get in as it will show you what a good cat it is, right in front of you.
