It’s not wrong to want something more from life. This desire often drives people to grow, have a successful career, and build an overall better life for themselves. However, when a person expects special treatment just for existing, they are already stepping into the entitlement zone where they put their own needs before anyone else’s, doing a huge disservice to those around them.

Just like these people in the list, whose entitlement went through the roof this month. Scroll down to find the worst instances of selfish people lacking self-awareness, and don’t forget to upvote those that desperately need a reality check.

While you're at it, make sure to check out a conversation with a mental health counselor and founder of A Braver Space, Gayle Clark, LCSW, and a marriage and family therapist, Dr. Paul Hokemeyer, as well as therapist and owner of Pathways Counseling KC, Laura Bonk, MA, LCPC, LPC, and behavioral relationship expert Tracy Crossley, who kindly agreed to tell us more about entitlement.

I have to use a walker ( due to cancer) and most of the time the driver helps me by placing it in their trunk without my asking. I appreciate it so much. But I don't get bent out of shape if they dont.

I always feel intensely uncomfortable when Uber drivers load my groceries for me. I stop them if possible but always always load them in as well. I tip well as it is but tip more if they help with my groceries.

Just because your pet gives you comfort, does not mean that it is an emotional support animal that should go with you everywhere. Once at Costco in Southern California I saw a Chihuahua on a leash bite the hand of a young child and draw blood. The kid was just minding his own business waiting in line for a hotdog. Obviously the dog did not want to be there, and the poor child was injured because of it.

I don't understand why people feel the need to take their dogs to the supermarket. Here in the UK only guide/service dogs are allowed in supermarkets which is fine, but I don't get why people go to the supermarket and leave their dog in the car cooking to death while they're doing their shopping. Just leave your dog at home ffs!

https://www.ada.gov/resources/service-animals-2010-requirements/ https://www.ada.gov/resources/service-animals-faqs/ Emotional support animals are NOT service dogs and DO NOT have public access rights; they are NOT allowed in non-pet-friendly public spaces. The number of "Emotional Support Animals" out and about that end up attacking real service dogs and rendering them non-functional is insane. Service dogs are extremely well-trained, with thousands of hours and dollars spent on a working dog to help disabled people. They are our lifelines, and having some A*hole's non-trained, aggressive emotional support animal destroy that is devastating in so many ways. Stay HOME with your pet

You mean service dog, not assistance animal. Under the Americans with Disabilities Act, only dogs are allowed as service animals. The sole exception is miniature horses which may be used as guide animals for the blind.

exactly and emotional support animals are not the same as trained service animals. not to mention when actual service animals are out with their owner and working, the owner will 9/10 times put on a vest that says "dont pet me, im working" or some variation thereof because their service animal needs to focus. i see a dog or any pet without a vest on, i just automatically think thats someones pet and they think rules dont apply to them.

I do admit, as a former retail worker, I'd still happily take the 5-minute "break" and say "Why certainly, I'll go check backstock for you!" and then just chill in the storage area for a few minutes, walk back out, and say "Oh gosh, so sorry, I checked EVERYWHERE, we don't have any!" I did this many a time when I knew darn well we didn't have the product and people wouldn't take "hey, I know we're out of stock on that item" as an answer. Then again, I worked vitamins/supplements, so some of the stuff people were buying (insane detox and "cleanse" supplements) were pretty unhinged already XD

It is entirely possible that she was buying these for someone else who is celiac or gluten-intolerant, and she herself is not. Therefore she would NEED the gluten-free option for whomever, but if a gluten-containing option was offered for free, she would accept that for herself and still have to go find another store from which to buy the needed gluten-free version.

"A sense of entitlement shows up when people have a belief that they are somehow inherently deserving of special treatment," says mental health counselor and founder of A Braver Space, Gayle Clark, LCSW.

Some signs of entitlement that she mentions include:

    1. Lack of empathy—struggling to consider other people’s feelings or perspectives.
    2. Unrealistic expectations—expecting special treatment, even when it's not earned.
    3. Difficulty accepting “No”—reacting poorly to being denied something and sometimes resorting to anger or manipulation.
    4. Rule-breaking—thinking that rules apply to others but not to oneself.
    5. Complaints—complaining about being poorly treated or victimized and blaming others when things don't go their way.
    6. Rarely saying thank you—not acknowledging help, sacrifice, or kindness from other people.

The vast majority, if not all, of the batteries in vapes are lithium ion batteries, which can easily burst into flames if damaged. Don't throw them anywhere. Recycle them properly. (Admittedly, batteries whose energy has been depleted are much less likely to burn.)

Shame she's didn't have the coffee in hand when that happened...

Marriage and family therapist Dr. Paul Hokemeyer adds that usually, the most apparent sign of all of them that a person is entitled is being highly demanding.

"They feel like they deserve the best of everything, the best table at a restaurant, the best designer accessories, the highest and most prestigious awards. They demand special treatment. They get incensed if they have to wait in a queue or be a part of the challenges of humanity," he explains.

"They also are highly emotional and can easily become unhinged and histrionic when they don't get what they feel they deserve. In my clinical practice, I refer to these clients as having very thin skin. They see nearly everything that even remotely challenges them as a personal affront, and they act out as if they sustained the most egregious insult if their unreasonable and undeserved expectations are unmet."

Next day he calls and says he can't do the job that was magically no problem before that. Admittedly I could have just let him park there and deal with the consequences should it happen, but I thought I was very polite in asking him to move and he got all butt hurt about it.

I live near a park and school with 25mph speed limit on a main road between the two. People often drive over that limit, but one day since there was a police car behind me I intentionally watched my speed, going maybe 28mph. This cop hits his emergency lights, goes around me, uses his lights to go through the stoplight ahead, but once he turned past the light I see that the 'emergency' was over as he turned his lights off and went on his way. Jacka$$!

This used to happen to me when I was renting a townhouse in a college town. Thankfully my roommate owned an old work van with a massive brush guard and he gave zero Fs about its aesthetics. He would literally ram the blocking vehicle out of the way every single time. My favorite is when the owner would come ask us what happened and we would say ohhhh that's really weird, I'm so sorry someone damaged your vehicle while you were blocking our driveway🤷🏻‍♀️

Ah yes, another country not having a sauce that is almost exclusive to North America, what a surprise. Also, Italian-style pizza is not necessarly something you share with others. It's one portion for one person, one meal. It doesn't need to be cut into slices.

The entitlement mentality can come from a variety of places. The most common one is childhood. "If a child receives everything they want from their parents/caregivers during their childhood and is rarely told "No," this can cause a sense of entitlement," says therapist and owner of Pathways Counseling KC, Laura Bonk, MA, LCPC, LPC.

When parents give in to children's tantrums and don't teach them to work for what they want, they might start lacking resilience and expect to receive everything they desire in life without any effort.

"Our culture of instant gratification [also] definitely plays a big role in creating entitled individuals and an entitled culture overall," Bonk adds.

Why would a gym allow this. It would seem they could have a policy of earbuds/headphones or no music. I don't go to gyms so I really truly don't know how these things are handled.

That was my assumption too. I also considered possible the bin was overfull, so the collection crew took the excess bags off the top to bring it back under the limit rather than refuse to empty at all. Either way, if the crew had dropped the bags into the bins when they were emptied, they could then have been accused of failing to empty the bin fully.

I'm voting Neutral. It might have been a little kid, strong enough to carry/drag the bags, but maybe not tall enough or strong enough to lift it over their heads. Maybe an older person with arthritic issues. I'd pop them in the dumpster myself, I'm right there. Sure, it could be a lazy person but I don't want me or anyone else to trip over them so I'd just move them into the bin.

My late husband and I always camped out, and we always brought extra bags. The first thing we would do when we picked our spot was clean up before we unloaded anything. We would camp for a week, Tuesday through Thursday, tended to be just us in the whole canyon, and we would wander-hike, and we always took smaller bags to pick up trash. It makes me so mad that so many people walk around and drop a wrapper or bottle or can as soon as it's empty. No thought at all, like a feral child.

They also refuse the obey the "please collapse cardboard boxes" sign, so they have to endure my swearing loudly when I have to do it!

Entitlement can also be a characteristic of some diagnosable personality disorders, says Clark, in particular, narcissistic personality disorder.

"It can also be seen in different ways in people with borderline personality disorder, antisocial personality disorder, or dependent personality disorder. There are many people who don't meet the criteria for a diagnosis but may still exhibit narcissistic traits. While it may appear that someone who is entitled thinks highly of themselves, from a mental health perspective, entitlement is often linked to deep-seated insecurity, a fear of rejection, and low self-worth," she explains.

Naturally, the behaviors that entitled people exhibit affect people around them, too. "You know you are in the presence of an entitled person if you feel constantly on edge, constantly wondering if anything you say will offend them," says Dr. Hokemeyer.

"Entitled people are draining. They make you feel emotionally diminished and physically exhausted. They can also evoke strong feelings of anger and resentment. This is due to their projecting airs of superiority over those around them, a superiority I hasten to add that is not justified by any measure. In sort, you feel invisible, devalued, irritated and angry around them."

This is a skill issue not an entitlement one. Google maps asks people to review places, often ones they haven't actually been to, & some people seem to think such requests are personally addressed to them and they're obligated to respond. It's the same as with people who respond to Amazon customer questions with things like "no idea, sorry" or " I bought a different model to I can't tell you", as though the question was directed at them personally not to all 207,869 people who also bought the product.

Not forced to review, but I utilized a service and the very next day and for several days after the main office repeatedly emailed me to leave specifically a five star review. It was over the top. The service was excellent (driver got a substantial tip and cake), but I was so annoyed by the demands for 5 stars that I opted not to leave a review. So yeah, sometimes there's a reason to respond in petty ways....

Customer Took The Filling Out Of Every Purse She Looked At, And Brought It All To The Front

A bag filled with crumpled white paper, highlighting lack of self-awareness.

I don't know why people are like this, if you are looking at a purse and they have stuffing in it please put it back. She had it in her cart and I put it all in a bag, I'm going to double check with my manager if she wants to hunt down some purses that need filling. We leave them in because it gets things on the shelf quicker and they look better filled. To kick me while I'm down, she didn't even buy a single purse all she bought was a pair of pants.

Please don't do this, do not be this person.

Same with shoes. They have the paper/filling in them for a reason. If you are trying shoes on and put the paper/filling back in them once you are done with them. Even if you are going to buy them. Take the filling home and dispose them yourself. Don't leave it for the store to get rid of it.

I agree with your first point, but if you're buying them leave the stuffing for the store to deal with. There is no need for you to buy literal recycling trash to take home and put in your own recycling, when the store has a big bin for just that purpose. Also, they can reuse the stuffing for other incoming shoes.

Maybe she thought she was helping...

"Entitled people can be difficult to be around and hard to maintain healthy relationships with," adds Clark. "There are often higher levels of conflict, as they refuse to compromise or take responsibility for their actions. It can be emotionally draining to feel that you constantly have to attend to an entitled person, leaving you feeling drained, used, or manipulated.

Over time, entitlement can lead to resentment and an imbalanced relationship, with one person feeling like they are giving so much more. Accommodating the needs of an entitled person can cause stress, exhaustion, or emotional withdrawal, much like burnout."

I work at a hospital and this is pretty much how the pavements by every entrance look ): it’s so upsetting. It’s not even just normal cigarettes, people are very openly smoking weed as well (the smell makes me gag). I am fighting with clouds of smoke each time I go into work, and a lot of patients are hooked up to things or have breathing tubes or IVs in. It’s sad. Really sad. And the mess as well also makes me sad. Not just cigarettes, vapes are worse (the disposable ones thrown all over the floor) and the smell too

If a person notices that the entitlement of others is affecting them in these ways, there are measures they can take to deal with it.

Behavioral relationship expert Tracy Crossley suggests trying out the following ones:

    1. Be honest about everything—from keeping expectations in check about what you are willing or not willing to do to saying how you really feel. Saying how you really feel without blaming them is to maintain your own sense of worth (people who are entitled will trample you if allowed to).
    2. Stop worrying about their sense of entitlement and instead focus on why another person's wants supersede what you want for yourself.
    3. Look at the value of your interactions with them; is this a person you want to spend time with? If you feel you have no choice, then practice self-awareness when the conversation starts to go to their expectations, either state that you don’t wish to talk about it or shift the focus of the conversation, or leave.

She's had multiple plastic surgeries over the decades until the surgeon finally laughed at her and told her he wouldn't do any more surgeries on her at her age. But she's still convinced EVERYONE is constantly looking at her. It's not a paranoia thing, it's an "I'm the main character and the only important person alive" thing XD I used to try to tell my mom that literally no one cares about her wrinkles/is looking at her. 43 years old, still have never forgotten a single one of my toys that my mother threw away. She once shoved my entire collection of Magic: The Gathering cards into the garbage disposal in the sink, ran water over them, and ground them to pulp in the early 90s. (Some of those cards would probably be worth a lot of money now.) I have also never forgotten all the pets of mine that SHE unilaterally got rid of because she stopped liking them/thinking they were cute/whatever reason. Kids NEVER forget this kind of thing, especially when the parents try to justify it with "It's JUST a [game, animal, toy, etc.]"

My mother would get rid of all my stuff while I was at school and w/o my knowledge. When she gaslit me by saying that I 'gave the ok' for her to send my modest shoe box of craft supplies to my cousin who was FOUR, I flipped out. Never in a million years would I have given the ok to get rid of any of it and even my dad backed me up. I don't think he knew what she was doing. I am 60 and it's one of the many things I remember and it contributed to my lack of respect for her and inability to love her either. That was hard to accept and admit that I didn't love her but here we are. That mother deleting Minecraft is going down the same path mine did.

It's doubtful, unfortunately. When deleting a Minecraft world, it deletes the file (either a .mcworld or a folder, depending on the version) and gives a warning that it'll be lost forever. So the only way to get it back would be to have a professional try to do it the normal way, but if he's created any new Minecraft worlds since then, it would've overwritten whatever remains of the file

That is a major no-no. I’m late thirties and if anyone deleted my game data (even if I wasn’t actively playing the game at the time) there would be hell to pay. Let alone a kid where he was actively playing it. I wouldn’t forgive that, and I hope the kid doesn’t either.

"Handling entitled people is a big effort, and one of the first steps is to realize that it is very unlikely that you will be able to change them," notes Clark. "Entitlement continues because, very often, it works for people—they don't necessarily have an incentive to change."

So the best thing to do would be to limit engagement with that person," says Dr. Hokemeyer. "To the extent that's impossible, work on setting personal boundaries around them. To be effective, these boundaries need to be clear, consistent, and enforceable. Your responsibility is to your self-care and peace of mind," he concludes.

In A Packed Tube, A Woman Prioritised Her Dog To Get A Seat Instead Of People Who Were Standing

People on a subway, one focused on their phone, unaware of a dog sitting on the seat next to them.

The tube can be frustrating as it is, where people really push past you to get a seat without any consideration.

But this shocked me, there were 5-6 people standing on the right, and this Ms prioritised her dog getting a seat (also it was early in the morning, everyone going to work). Is this not getting out of hand? Shocking how much people lack empathy in this city sometimes.

Some people prefer to stand, especially if they're only going a couple of stops. Personally I'd have just asked her to move the dog, and then sat down on it if she refused. The dog would move pretty pronto even if she didn't want it to.

Dogs on public transport should be taught to sit between the owner's legs so they're not in the way (or underneath the chair if the owner has a seat). That's what I do with my dogs.

I take my dog on the train and bus and only ever let him on a seat if it's not busy and there's nobody needing it and I've put down newspaper first because nobody likes sitting on a seat covered in dog hair & paw prints - it's basic good manners.

Hey, not saying this is right or anything but I reckon we need to understand more info. Maybe the dog had a condition where it had to sit? Not trying to stir something up but I think there's two sides to every story and that we shouldn't jump to conclusions without understanding the circumstances first.

You’d be surprised at what people listen to in waiting rooms. At full volume. Films, random c**p on TikTok or YouTube but the absolute worst is when patients start watching pörn. You have problems if you are bored and can’t think of something else to watch or think about while you wait. It’s so selfish. Just bring headphones for crying out loud and consider someone other than yourself for five minutes, please

Load Your Damn Groceries Like The Rest Of Us

A car parked poorly outside a store with people nearby, highlighting lack of self-awareness in public spaces.

This has been an increasing problem at my local Costco. Hit a peak version of it so I wanted to get some second opinions/am I the a*****e.

At this Costco some shoppers wait at the door while someone else fetches the vehicle so they can load, as shown, in front of the door.

This picture is poor, but there are three in a row all in the process of loading, all loading baskets of regular household purchases - by this I mean no large bulky items, no furniture, nothing they are getting assistance with from staff.

This choice is inexplicable to me, causes mayhem with traffic both vehicular and pedestrian, and feels like “I am the main character” energy. It was obnoxious to get in the doors this day, complete cart traffic jam.

I don’t get it. Am I missing something? Considering a complaint in to the local store and I wanted to calibrate against the community as I might be “more Karen than correct” this time?

Mike F, I have survived a broken back that my doctor refuses to qualify as needing a handicap permit more than a decade later & increasing soul-crushing pain. I need to sit on the benches outside at the no parking area. My husband dislikes leaving me alone for fear someone takes advantage of me or where he can't see me if he loads up our groceries, so he hurries to the car. Sometimes I keep the groceries & sometimes he takes them. You'll be angrier to know that he has to take time to help me into the car safely. So even if I don't have the groceries w/me, he has to pull up, enable the parking brake, help me in & buckled up, put himself back in, release the parking brake, & get the hell away from a$$holes like you. I would give up a lot to not have to go through this rigmarole. FYI, I did not break my back because I was an idiot, didn't pay attention, my fault, etc. I was in no way at fault for the break. I also can't change my doctor will-nilly over the issue but I will explain just for you.

For me, this depends on the situation. If they're loading something big or super heavy then it makes sense, or if it's someone with limited mobility. But just for everyday people to be too lazy to walk to their cars and unload there? No. That's ridiculous.

Mixed feelings. Yes, the purpose of a baby shower is to bring gifts for the baby, and it’s very rude not to. OTOH, it’s against etiquette to throw one for yourself.

I missed the throwing it yourself part. Good catch. That person might just need new family and friends if they need to resort to this.

I am so confused. You aren't supposed to show up to a baby shower empty handed. Baby showers are specifically for gifts. There are gift registries. Do people not bring gifts to baby showers? It is just odd this women feels the need the threaten people, but if people are coming to baby showers without present, I would be upset too.

No, but why don't you just sell tickets for this baby shower? It will pay for your food and drink and you might be able to buy your baby something he/sh/it actually needs without being dependent on what someone else thinks he/sh/it needs. Of course I'm not serious: if you invite people and they have to bring a gift, you could just as well sell tickets because it's the same thing. You don't want the people there; you want their presents. It's a present-grab.

The fact that she has those demands becsuse of the time and money she spent planning the shower tells me that she put in too much effort into it.

Possibly, although this happens all the time in the UK. I have a level crossing near my, which has a very busy line running through it, and I have witnessed numerous people trying to beat the gates or trains. In all my years in my job I can safely say this, trains win... always. Oh, and they don't swerve either, so no point trying to play chicken with one!

My Mom Ate My Clearly Labeled Food And Then Lied About It

Two food containers labeled "No" highlight lack of self-awareness on a table.

I would like to start by saying I cook all the time. I also buy and share food all the time. She very rarely does either of those things, but whatever I can feed myself. She lets me stay rent free while I’m in college so I figure it works and I can pitch in that way. Anyways, this time I didn’t want to share so I very clearly labeled my food. I come home to eat the food I was looking forward to all day to find this is all she left me. She then tried to blame my grandpa. He has had three strokes and is 86 and does not eat that much. So I tell her I know good and well he did not eat it. I show her it was very clearly labeled “No”. She then lies again and says she didn’t see the label. There is no way she didn’t see the label. Ugh.

Given the number of bags of dog s**t you see growing on trees and bushes in public parks, or just chucked on verges etc, I'm disinclined to be so charitable. There's a significant proportion of dog owners who pick up after their dogs then just chuck the plastic-swathed c**p. I see it everywhere - enough to conclude it's not a rare antisocial outlier.

I volunteered for a while at a local food bank and couldn't handle the amount of 60k+ new cars that came in regularly to use the food bank. I know it could be a sudden job loss or something and that I shouldn't judge but to me if you have an 80k asset and can't afford to eat you sensibly sell that 80k asset and get a 20k replacement then buy your own d**n groceries. It threw me off, I think a lot of them were just trying to save money on groceries and abusing the program.

Where I live the cans (wheelie bins) are council property, so they're registered to your house. Harder for a neighbor to steal.

Personally, this doesn’t seem like an issue to me. Unless they had a very strong odor from their feet that you could smell, he isn’t hurting anyone else or being selfish. He seems like he just wants to relax on a possibly long flight, and some people prefer to take off their shoes (even if it isn’t hygienic) and some don’t, this isn’t entitlement in my opinion, like bro’s just sleeping 😭

Who cares? I don't know why people are such babies about parts of the human body. I hate having my feet shoved into shoes all day, if I'm paying for a long flight my shoes are coming off. Edit: I would not do that if I was unfortunate enough to have stinky feet, that's when it becomes disrespectful if you're in public.

Unless that's a freshwater pool, that fish is doomed. Around here people dump goldfish in the local creek where they grow to massive sizes. Ducks too. At least the domesticated ducks that get abandoned seem to be surviving fine on their own; they join up with the native ducks. I could swear I even saw one that was a hybrid! Half native, half domesticated.

The Entitlement Of Drivers Towards Disabled Pedestrians Is Absolutely Revolting

Car parked with no self-awareness, blocking sidewalk at a construction site with greenery around.

When I, a wheelchair user, tried to get to my bus stop I had to go around this car on the grass. The driver then came over to get stuff out of it and when I told them it's illegal to park there they told me that because they couldn't find parking (there is a park nearby) they had to park like that because they work nearby. They explicitly told me they don't care that they affected my ability to use the footpath.

Drivers in Australia feel like they are entitled to every piece of infrastructure and if anything is built for someone who doesn't want to or can't drive it's something being taken from them, something that they should be able to use at our expense.

I've recently had to start using a wheelchair at times (tl;dr lifelong hip dysplasia issue that used to be intermittent has become chronic) and I'm floored at how oblivious most people are. My dad was disabled for 20 years (traumatic brain injury in an accident) and I used to be the one who pushed his wheelchair whenever we took him places. It was bad enough to be the person pushing the wheelchair - but it's SO much worse when you're the one IN the chair trying to wheel yourself around. People just stop in doorways/pathways, especially if they're on their phone. People park and block sidewalks/doorways/pathways. I've only been using the wheelchair for a few weeks and I've been polite, but I think my reaction to this kind of behavior is rapidly going to become "call the cops" :(

Strange that I can fit my gigantic Volkswagen Eurovan into spaces like this, but a Porsche Cayenne cannot fit? And even if one's car cannot fit into an older parking spot, that does not justify taking up two parking spots.

I'm building a truck, would be happy to trade. I just need the frame, body panels, cab, bed, transmission, engine, wheels, and tires. I already have a driveshaft.

If there’s a “dude in the back” the coffee shop is not “empty”. What does “empty” mean actually, maybe I’m wrong. Does she think “empty” means not that many people?

I suspect she hears the word 'empty' quite often in descriptions of herself. Possibly, this is the reason she can't work out the actual meaning.

If there really is NO washroom, OK. But a lot of cities need more public washrooms that are easy to get to. Also, a very young child might need to go RIGHT NOW.

So what? If they don't have a customer toilet what would you want them to do? They'd be in breach of potentially many rules/laws if they let customers into staff areas, all sorts of Health and Safety implications.

This doesn't seem at all unreasonable to me. Someone charging 300 for 2 hours is clearly not the right person for a toddlers' party. They just need someone who's ok at popping on some fun tiger strips or Spiderman face or suchlike in under 3 minutes.

IF there are no large-enough overhead lockers, and no luggage rack in the train compartment, this would be understandable. Better than to leave the luggage in the aisle.

It looks like these seats are specifically for elderly/ pregnant / disabled people though. Look at the seat cover compared to the other seats behind. If you're going to do this, at least make sure you sit in a spot that isn't a designated spot for a certain group. Also most trains that I was on in Japan had an area specifically for luggage
