‘Are you by chance an American?’ is a phrase often used online to refer to someone who lacks awareness or is oblivious to the obvious. It stems from the stereotype that people from the US aren’t as knowledgeable as those in other parts of the world. It’s hard to say how this generalization came to be, but it sure can sometimes make even Americans themselves chuckle.

According to her, people in most countries are polite and won’t ever say to others what they’re doing is offensive or socially unacceptable, which makes it hard for tell-me-like-it-is Americans to catch on to social cues.
So she recommends trying to notice if people they come into contact with are genuinely interested, like asking a lot of follow-up questions, making eye contact, building on their stories, asking to join in, etc., or are they just being polite? “If your Spidey sense starts to tingle, it’s probably time to change the subject or move on to a new activity,” Davis advised.

Yeah, I don't really understand this stuff at all. Why would they care? Almost everybody there has Polish heritage, you're literally in Poland, and a lot more even than you do. Plus, they speak Polish, and have Polish citizenship. The only thing hard about "military" time is that you need to do the math *if* you're not used to it. If we had evolved with 8 fingers instead of 10 we'd be using octal for math and counting instead of decimal, and most people would be confused by decimal. Related factoid: How do you multiply a 350 digit number by 8 if it's an octal number? You put a zero on the end, just like you do with decimal.

You know, all the "not all Americans" aside, I'm really tired of the mismatch between what I hear here - and want to believe ("We're really not like that, we're okay"), and the people from US I work with every day. They treat us exactly like this - with contempt and a feeling of superiority so strong you could think they are literally hovering above us. So I have a huge problem that I don't know what to do with because my colleagues from the States are really insufferable. It's tiring to be treated like shît just because you're from a different country. ETA: yep, let the downvoting begin just because I have a problem with being treated like shît by US citizens at work. Yeah, I definitely deserve that 🤦♀️

I understand you, most Americans don't understand that they have become that weird and awkward kid in class that eats sand and worms to get acceptance and a laugh from the rest of the class. The Swedish part of me feels sorry for them but the Chilean part of me feels joy and satisfaction that they are finally getting struck by karma for all the shıt they caused in Chile and other South American countries. Yes, I am an American. We are some of the most ignorant people ever. I love my country, but I do agree that we are in a really bad place right now, and most people on the internet that have presence from the US are sadly the bad ones or the ones that attack others... and we need to change that :( imo its actually good to show these because it can show the need for basic education nowadays. however, not all of us are like this... we just need to educate the people that are :) and most americans are laughing at people like this too!

Yes, it is hurting for every US American who understands that the US are not the center of the world. But it will get worse, with throwing out a lot information of libraries, schools and military included, and removing factual information from websites. Accepting brainwashing, filtering information and burning of books as normal, with the goal of eliminating groups of people or make them disappear is basic fa.ci.st behaviour. And running detention centers as business model to earn money is just downright crazy. Normal countries aim to have as less people as possible in prison and only if they are a danger, because 1. citizens should be part of the normal work force, contributing to the welfare of the country and 2. prisons are paid for from taxes. Prisons as business means gathering as many prisoners as possible, while still paid for by taxes. Btw, censoringnormal words is a sign of facsism, too.

Although I can't help but wonder what it would be like to live in a country where you're not surrounded by idiots, because America seems to have a disproportionate amount of them

Yes, I am an American. We are some of the most ignorant people ever. I love my country, but I do agree that we are in a really bad place right now, and most people on the internet that have presence from the US are sadly the bad ones or the ones that attack others... and we need to change that :( imo its actually good to show these because it can show the need for basic education nowadays. however, not all of us are like this... we just need to educate the people that are :) and most americans are laughing at people like this too!

Yes, it is hurting for every US American who understands that the US are not the center of the world. But it will get worse, with throwing out a lot information of libraries, schools and military included, and removing factual information from websites. Accepting brainwashing, filtering information and burning of books as normal, with the goal of eliminating groups of people or make them disappear is basic fa.ci.st behaviour. And running detention centers as business model to earn money is just downright crazy. Normal countries aim to have as less people as possible in prison and only if they are a danger, because 1. citizens should be part of the normal work force, contributing to the welfare of the country and 2. prisons are paid for from taxes. Prisons as business means gathering as many prisoners as possible, while still paid for by taxes. Btw, censoringnormal words is a sign of facsism, too.
