‘Are you by chance an American?’ is a phrase often used online to refer to someone who lacks awareness or is oblivious to the obvious. It stems from the stereotype that people from the US aren’t as knowledgeable as those in other parts of the world. It’s hard to say how this generalization came to be, but it sure can sometimes make even Americans themselves chuckle.
The truth is that we all do silly things, so why not just laugh about them together? That’s exactly why our Bored Panda team put together a list of instances when common sense just slipped Americans' minds. Scroll down to find them below, and don’t forget that it's all in good fun!

Native Americans Aren't Native?
It’s clear from this list that the lack of awareness among Americans is hard to miss online. But where they really shine is when they travel, and even Kim Davis, TV presenter and journalist at CNN, can’t deny it.
“It’s a hard pill to swallow, but sadly, we’ve gained a reputation around the world for being, well, ‘stupid Americans.’ Is it offensive? Yes. Could we get upset about it? Sure. But with tens of millions of Americans traveling abroad every year, the likelihood is that you’ll encounter us wherever you are in the world. Therefore, our reputation is completely understandable,” she admitted in one of her travel articles.

Celebrating A Foreign Holiday Is A Requirement
“The reality is, we ALL do ‘stupid’ things, especially when we are in foreign places and we don’t know the local customs, cultures or surroundings. No one is immune from this humiliation, not even genius scholars,’ she continued.
“However, smart travelers know that doing “stupid” things abroad can not only be disrespectful and embarrassing, but it can put you at risk of being arrested, hurt or the victim of crime,” Davis warned.

Ok Racist
That’s why, instead of finding the labels offensive or upsetting, she chooses to focus on how she can become a smart traveler. And after more than 20 years of exploring, she believes she has cracked it and decided to share her best tips on how to become a ‘smart American abroad.’ Her first recommendation is to read social cues.
We Have Trees Older Than Europe Itself
Am I Missing Something?
To be generous, you know this guy ha s nearly had a stroke while ranting about birthright citizenship.
Something Good Happens, Must Be Us
According to her, people in most countries are polite and won’t ever say to others what they’re doing is offensive or socially unacceptable, which makes it hard for tell-me-like-it-is Americans to catch on to social cues.
So she recommends trying to notice if people they come into contact with are genuinely interested, like asking a lot of follow-up questions, making eye contact, building on their stories, asking to join in, etc., or are they just being polite? “If your Spidey sense starts to tingle, it’s probably time to change the subject or move on to a new activity,” Davis advised.
I Bet Those People Keep Asking Themself "Why The Language Is Called "English" And Not "United Statesish"?"

Is This Serious?
“North America Law Is Law Across The World”
The orange one is only the president in the US. He is NOT the president of North America and never will be
Her next tip is to keep the volume down. “It is very true that most Americans have a wonderful zest for life. We don’t think twice about gabbing away with friends (or strangers) on public transportation or laughing whole-heartedly at the dinner table. That’s just our way of being friendly. However, in many places around the world, speaking loudly is considered extremely rude and highly uncommon. [...] When I’m traveling abroad, I’m always careful to keep it to, what feels like, a quiet whisper.”

Oh My God, It Literally Says “Australia” On The Currency
Another recommendation she has is trying to blend in— but not for the reasons you might think of! “Normally, I’m all for originality and standing out in a crowd. However, when you’re traveling abroad, even to a place you know well, standing out is like wearing a flashing sign that says, ‘I’m a tourist, come take advantage of me!’”
Pickpockets or someone else with malicious intent can spot someone who isn’t a local from a mile away, that’s why it’s better to blend in with the locals. “Not only will it make you a smart American, it’ll also make you a safer American,” she said.

When abroad, she additionally advises being curious and asking questions instead of telling how things are done back home. Davis also suggests doing homework beforehand to avoid getting ripped off or taken advantage of. “Know the local scams and know how to reject people who approach you with their games. Stranger danger is real.” For this, reading the local news can be very helpful.

Lastly, she recommends learning the basics of the language, which includes words like ‘Hello,’ ‘Goodbye,’ ‘Thank you,’ ‘Please,’ ‘I don’t speak …,’ and ‘Where is…?’
“Even if you butcher the words, most people deeply appreciate it when you at least try to speak the local language. It shows respect that you made the effort, and you’ll be surprised at how many doors it can unlock for you.”

This was obviously a joke. That said, all three of my kids were born in the US. My first language is Portuguese, and one day I was speaking with my mother, in my native tongue. My son (maybe 7 at the time) asked me why I can't just speak in a "human" language. I've never let him live that down.

"Military Time"
It's not military time, it's just a 24 hour clock. And for me it's much easier as I have to schedule meetings in multiple timezones from East Asia to North America.
I thought it was more common to use a 24h clock in 2025 than an analog 12h one
24hour clock prevents the use of am and pm, which most people do not get in any case.
The amount of people that think 12 pm is midnight....
Load More Replies...*sigh*. It’s just as easy, and it avoids confusion with exactly what time of day someone is referring to. Train timetables being a good example.
Easier. Calculating how many hours from 11 to 17 is easier than 11 to 5 .
Load More Replies...Growing up in a family of airline folks, we've always used the 24 hour clock. It drives my husband insane.
Military, hospitals, laboratories, lots of places use 24h time. Honestly its just easier.
The only thing hard about "military" time is that you need to do the math *if* you're not used to it. If we had evolved with 8 fingers instead of 10 we'd be using octal for math and counting instead of decimal, and most people would be confused by decimal. Related factoid: How do you multiply a 350 digit number by 8 if it's an octal number? You put a zero on the end, just like you do with decimal.
The Sumerians counted using the thumb as a pointer and counting the pads on their fingers, giving us the system based on 12. We decided nope, the thumb is a finger too, come on in buddy, lets count by 10. The thumb is the Pluto of our hand lol
Load More Replies...how difficult is it to remove 2 from the second number and one from the first?
But no one says it like that. It would be 18 hundred hrs. Not 18 o'clock.
Load More Replies...I just bought an analog watch that show the numbers for 24-hour time, just in case I need to know.
Honesty, analog clocks are harder. I've never had an issue with military time.

“Decided”
You know, all the "not all Americans" aside, I'm really tired of the mismatch between what I hear here - and want to believe ("We're really not like that, we're okay"), and the people from US I work with every day. They treat us exactly like this - with contempt and a feeling of superiority so strong you could think they are literally hovering above us. So I have a huge problem that I don't know what to do with because my colleagues from the States are really insufferable. It's tiring to be treated like shît just because you're from a different country. ETA: yep, let the downvoting begin just because I have a problem with being treated like shît by US citizens at work. Yeah, I definitely deserve that 🤦♀️

It's embarrassing when the only Americans speaking up are the stupid ones. So yeah, I'm not saying we have a sucky life, I am saying that everybody hates us and what we do to others is selfish :(
I'm sure the USA used to be a great and normal country. What happened ?
I feel so ashamed now to say I am an American. I swear we are not all like that and have been educated. smh
... and this is the reason why when something is extremely dumbed down - be it media or a product - me and my s. o. call it 'made for Americans'. (Yes, I'm quite aware that not all Americans, but... *gestures vaguely towards your general surroundings*) P.S: we in Romania shouldn't laugh too much though, we seem to swiftly follow in the footsteps of your 'esteemed' MAGAts and their orange leader.
Idiots. Idiots everywhere. I know that that it’s easy to find an American who is willing to add something stupid to a thread, they are so keen to be heard, but never forget that every village has an idiot and there’s a huge number of your own nation who qualify for idiot status. If you can’t wrap your head around that fact then I’ll ask you who the idiot is in your village. PS It’s still amusing to read how creative they can be.

I'm continually embarrassed to be an American, because I have to agree that many Americans are incredibly stupid, and arrogant in their stupidity. It's just sad....
As an American, I apologize on behalf of my entire country. Yes, we are stupid. I'm so sorry y'all have to put up with us. Although I can't help but wonder what it would be like to live in a country where you're not surrounded by idiots, because America seems to have a disproportionate amount of them
Yes, I am an American. We are some of the most ignorant people ever. I love my country, but I do agree that we are in a really bad place right now, and most people on the internet that have presence from the US are sadly the bad ones or the ones that attack others... and we need to change that :( imo its actually good to show these because it can show the need for basic education nowadays. however, not all of us are like this... we just need to educate the people that are :) and most americans are laughing at people like this too!
Yes, it is hurting for every US American who understands that the US are not the center of the world. But it will get worse, with throwing out a lot information of libraries, schools and military included, and removing factual information from websites. Accepting brainwashing, filtering information and burning of books as normal, with the goal of eliminating groups of people or make them disappear is basic fa.ci.st behaviour. And running detention centers as business model to earn money is just downright crazy. Normal countries aim to have as less people as possible in prison and only if they are a danger, because 1. citizens should be part of the normal work force, contributing to the welfare of the country and 2. prisons are paid for from taxes. Prisons as business means gathering as many prisoners as possible, while still paid for by taxes. Btw, censoringnormal words is a sign of facsism, too.
The American Dark Age. This too will pass. The term "Dark Ages" was initially used to describe the Early Middle Ages (roughly 5th to 10th centuries) in Europe, primarily due to a perceived lack of cultural and intellectual advancement compared to the preceding Roman Empire and the later Renaissance. This perception was influenced by factors like the decline of Roman institutions, the relative scarcity of written records during the period, and the rise of feudalism and religious dominance.
