Cows can only be female. So, only cows can give birth & produce milk. They’re cattle. Mature males are bulls. Mature females are cows. Maybe it’s just because most of our experiences are with cows, that we think of the entire species as being cows. But that is absolutely not the case.

The ridiculous stupidity of the original post aside, the concept of a “nation” is notoriously vague and tricky to define, considering how many diverse political, geographical, ethnolinguistic, and cultural aspects it attempt to amalgamate. Among all the modern nations, I think China is the closest to passing most antiquity tests. It has definitely been a nation in every sense for at least 3000 years.

I'm pretty sure if you can supply a large enough number of caveats we can make this statement true. For instance, while China has been a nation for nearly 3000 years, the current political system has only been in place since 1949. In another example, the United Kingdom of Great Britain was founded in 1707 with the Treaty of Union, but it has only included the Northern Ireland since 1801. I mean these are super insane caveats, as the nations within the United Kingdom go back to at least the 10th century (depending on how you define nation). Egypt has been a nation since around 3000 BCE, 1952 CE, or 2014 CE depending upon how you define things. It's a really dumb post though, you're right about that.

The "Confidently Incorrect" subreddit has been around since 2017, and like much of niche internet culture, it was small at first before expanding into a shared belly-laugh of a community. What began as a simple concept, collecting screenshots of people being hilariously, confidently wrong, quickly took off. The internet, of course, is never wanting for people who have strong opinions and thin facts.

The subreddit has grown to hundreds of thousands of users over time and is now one of the default locations for humor that blurs the cringe-comedy line. Its material has a tendency to bleed into the mainstream, showing up on Twitter, TikTok, and Instagram, and sustaining the internet's hunger for this sort of material in general.

Taken out of context. This was happening when Jesus was about to be hauled away to the cross. Jesus asked who the soldiers were looking for, and they answered "Jesus of Nazareth," to which he answered this. What Jesus was actually saying was "I am who you are looking for."

    Forrest Hobbs

Pieter LeGrande: you're quoting a translation based on translations - written to have poetic impact rather than literally reproducing the meaning in the source translations. In any case, just before that verse, Genesis 1.26 says "Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness." - so God, in their own voice, is not claiming any séx. Given that God is represented in the Bible as an absolutely unique, omniscient, omnipotent, omnipresent, "being" which pre-existed everything else in the universe and indeed created the universe, it would be very strange for God to have anything identifiable as a séx or gender.

The "Confidently Incorrect" subreddit is one of the darker corners of the internet where there's schadenfreude mixed with humor, and everyone can't help but congregate to stare in awe at how brazenly incorrect someone is. The rules are simple, posts, comments, or screenshots of individuals declaring things with complete and utter certainty, yet being laughably, irrefutably wrong. It's not the mistake that's funny, it's the swagger, the confidence, the complete and utter lack of doubt that turns boring errors into internet gold.

H is always a consonant (for most of the English speaking world except US/Canada/others that use said dialect, I believe). Say, "I hate a herb" is correct grammar (though, a weird thing to say, but *shrug*) for UK/Aus/etc. US etc would use "I hate an herb", I think? One of the reasons that this type of content is so popular is because it hits a very human frustration, we all know someone in our lives who acts like an encyclopaedia human but speaks absolute muck. Watching random individuals getting publicly roasted for it online is vicarious. It's like seeing the obnoxious guy at the dinner party get fact-checked by the universe itself. There's relief and humor in watching overconfidence get deflated by the world, and that's what makes the subreddit so engrossing.

Further to that, almost no *older* words come from acronyms. Just as with the examples you cite, it's almost all modern inventions and organisations that use acronyms.

I did middle-school in the United States, and I was not taught this nonsense. We learned actual facts in health class. Like that women's urethra and the vaginal canal are not the same. And that if you get married, your wife will cheat on you with your neighbor Jerry. Then somehow Shannon's still gonna get the house, even though it was her fault for fugging Jerry in the first place, and you're gonna be stuck moving back in with your parents, because how the hell are you gonna pay the mortgage on Shannon's house and afford a place on your own. You know, practical stuff.

The gap between their conviction and reality is the humor. While a flat-out mistake, coupled with the recognition of ignorance, can be annoying, confidently erroneous posts demonstrate the human tendency to bluff or to pose, and it usually leads to something absurd.

In my family we have a house rules in Scrabble: if you can explain why a word should exist of should be spelled that way and the other person thinks your idea actually kinda makes sense, you're allowed to use that word/spelling. As far as I'm concerned stand-office and trenchal both make enough sense to be allowed.

There's also a feeling of communal reassurance. As you scroll through the thread of unapologetically incorrect opinions, you can't help but feel just a little bit smarter by comparison. It's not sinister, exactly, it's more or less a harmless ego stroking. You might not know advanced physics or obscure trivia, but at least you’re not out here insisting with authority that “penguins are a type of plant.” The internet thrives on making people feel like part of an in-group, and laughing together at outrageous errors creates that bond.

I had an argument with my stubborn father the other day because he said his high school Latin teacher was perfectly fluent. I argued that as the language hasn't had a native speaker in millennia, how are we to know that we are even pronouncing words correctly?? And what about slang & non grammatically correct stuff? We just take a stab at it really. He is a very smart man but once he digs his heels in...🙄 I couldn't convince him of this & his Latin teacher was perfect.

    Judes

I don't think fluency requires a native accent. Many people are fluent in English, but do not have one of the many native speaker accents. And knowing slang is also not required for fluency. Fluency just means you are easily able to express yourself in that language. So, I'm with your dad on this.

Dave Baxter: plenty of people have a pretty good idea how Latin was pronounced by some ancient Romans. You can work out a lot from various written sources. The thing is, "ancient Rome" covers a huge time period - over 1200 years - and a huge geographical area as well. The English I speak has diverged a long way from the language Alfred the Great used approximately 1100 years back.

Memetic potential plays a big role too. Most assertively wrong posts end up leading lives of their own, becoming jokes that cycle back in other corners of the web. The humor is easy to pass along, easy to understand, and contains low levels of context, great traits for viral content. To that degree, the subreddit is a part of the wider context of internet humor in which screenshots can go from Reddit to Twitter to TikTok, accruing chuckles along the way.

Finally, there is something disconcertingly endearing about fallibility being in action. Sure, it's funny, but it also serves as a reminder that confidence guarantees nothing and that even the most self-assured human can be an utter blunderhead. In a world where misinformation moves fast and individuals double down rather than backing down, there is value in seeing how silly that looks to others.

Okay, this might be obvious for native daily speakers. But if English is a language you need to learn, the grammar books explain: I, you, he/she/it = singular; we, you, they = plural, plus any variation to indicate relation to persons or objects. For a non-native speaker the only logic to use "their" (as in plural) in above case is: He/she = he or she = 2 options for a person = plural. If the gender is clear, it sounds very odd to use the plural form as in "Joe owns a car. It is their car." A non-native speaker learns "It is his car".

There was a Simpsons episode where Homer was driving an 18 wheel truck and brought Bart along. They had stopped at a lake and were fishing. Bart casually said "We still have 1200 miles to go, and only 10 hours to make it." Homer herded Bart back into the truck and off they went. Yeah, Simpsons is kind of a surreal comedy, but you don't have to be a genius to know they'd have to AVERAGE 120 miles an hour to make that deadline...

This just reminded me of my late dad; RIP pops. He was an engineer who was privately educated and a very smart man. In his 80s, he decided to cook my lamb recipe which worked out to him needing 120 minutes cooking time. He rang me to say it was really tough and he couldn't figure out why. Turned out he was convinced 120 minutes was 1 hour 20 mins and it must have taken me half an hour of repeating the explanation for the penny to drop. He just had a brain fart moment, bless him

I have a colleague from Bosnia, born here in Germany, and she always told me how Bosnia is almost jungle like, with no toiletts. You have to go outside to pee, no streets no cars, no anything. Googel told me otherwise and about 6 years later I visited Sarajevo in 2018 during the Film festival. It was magic!! How stupid can you be with your own country? The parents probably fled the country during the war and came from a very rural region. But since the war's been over for more than 20 years, you would think that they traveled back occasionally and witnessed the evolution of their homecountry. 🤷‍♂️ Maybe it was also just some kind of long-con prank your colleague played on you.

dan s: what's wrong is that Italians don't typically celebrate the US holiday of Thanksgiving. The clue is in the demonym "Italian" - referring to citizens of Italy. It's a complicated subject, though - plenty of countries have harvest thanksgiving festivals unrelated to the US version. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thanksgiving#Observance

During the first pregnancy, I developed asthma. I also had moved from Pennsylvania to Idaho. Was now allergic to sagebrush and triggered by hay when I feed the horses. Allergies/asthma got worse until I quit having babies (4 kids) Slowly got better and better, and I spent 35 years allergy/asthma free. Age 71, I develop an embolism after surgery, go see the pulmonologist afterwards, and they tell me I now have adult onset asthma. S**t. But at least I'm not pregnant!!

Eh, it's complicated. The software was metric because it was easier to code. Anything else was in imperial units. All the Mercury, Gemini and Apollo hardware was designed to specs in inches/pounds. The Shuttle was designed in imperial units, but they were "weird" because most of the design was made in metric units (for integration with international cooperation projects) and then converted to inches; so, they ended up with a lot of 64th in their fractions and plenty of mils on the sensitive stuff (.001 inch). After the 1999 Mars Orbiter f*ckup, all the recent projects (ISS, Artemis, SLS, Orion etc) have been in metric. Some subcomponents are derived from previous projects and may still be manufactured in imperial units, but anything critical has been switched over.

Jrog: I've read - I don't recall where - technical specs for the Mercury and Gemini programmes. From what I recall, they specified pressure in inches of mercury and inches of water as well as PSI, depending on the precise application. I've come across a reference to pressure specified as 8 mm Hg just now (excessive CO_2 partial pressure, SEDR 109-7 2-10, pg 60 of the PDF file Mercury Flight Operations SEDR 109-7 from https://www.ibiblio.org/mscorbit/document.html). That document sometimes specifies pressure as psia or psig (psi absolute or psi gauge) and sometimes doesn't bother to specify which one it's talking about. It's a *mess*...

I think the Apollo missions got to the moon *despite* the imperial measurement system

    Forrest Hobbs

The Apollo missions got to the moon because NASA was very, very careful about quality control and testing. Any system of measurements will do, if everything's properly calibrated and everyone knows what they're doing and no-one gets confused or ignores instructions (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mars_Climate_Orbiter#Cause_of_failure). It just so happens that the USA never adopted the Imperial system of measurements and legally redefined US customary units in terms of metric standards in 1893: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mendenhall_Order. So; the Apollo mission used units which were all calibrated in terms of metric units - sounds crazy, there you go.

I guess that explains why incorrectly leaving off the 's at the end of plural singular words that end in 's' (example "Chris'" instead of "Chris's" house) has become so prevalent. I see it everywhere now (in articles, closed captioning, etc. not just random posts). If people like this are teaching, it's no wonder.

I’m not completely dismissing this one because clearly Europeans evolved pale skin, and lived and worked outdoors most of the time. If they were very prone to skin cancer that would have been disastrous for the species. So I do feel something’s wrong in our modern lifestyles that mean a European in Europe has to wear sunscreen all day every day to protect their health. Personally I wonder about changes in diet, with a lot less fruit, vegetables, and herbs.

They evolved pale skin *because* there was less sun than in the place when humans originated. We require Vitamin D to live and darker skin prevents that in higher latitudes. It's not that Europeans didn't require sun-screen, its because it didn't exist. Europeans will have still died of melanoma, but knowing the times back then they will have thought they were devils touches or something like that.

Unless they have scales that you type the food into and it gives the weight and the calories, or just the calories? It wouldn’t surprise me at all if there is such a thing.

Nutritional Calculator scales, aka calorie smart scales. You can buy them as cheap as 10$, and it's likely what OP was referring here. The smug answers are wrong.

I have the feeling OP is correct and the others are wrong... They explicitly call it the "calorie weigher", and you can absolutely tell the calories from the weigh if you know what you are weighing. Scales measuring calories definitely exist. You choose what you are weighing through an app or a small display, and they have a database of nutritional values so they give you the weight, calories and all the nutritional data.

Well, if you know how much of its mass is comprised of carbs, fats, proteins, you can CALCULATE the energy the food has in it. But, if you don't, you only have grams. It can't exceed what energy its mass in pure fats would be, as that's the nutrient with the highest nutritional density, and it will most likely not be zero, which would mean it's a food that doesn't have any energy in it, but might consist of useful fibres, vitamins, ... But, a scale can olny be set up to weigh stuff, and with a known, constant food, you can introduce a scale converting this into energy, but ... but still, gotta know what it's consisting of. So, no.

In fairness, this is pretty common. Also: try getting a room of people to agree as to when the date changes: at midnight, or after midnight. When working on system designs where people insist on having things trigger at midnight, I finally told everyone that we couldn't do that, but we could have things happen at 11:59pm (which everyone would agree was "Tuesday night", for example) and we could have things happen at 12:01am (which everyone clearly understood would be "Wednesday morning"). But "midnight Tuesday" or "midnight Wednesday" would just bring confusion.

Incredibly, this is exactly the position of many US and UK agencies. NEVER use 12 am/pm in official documents, always refer to one minute before or after. Among them, the NIST, Associated Press, Texas A&M, the US Custom Office. The NPL, the chief metrology institution in the UK advises to either do so, or GTFO and just use 24-hours format will ya? This is an eternal struggle in Germany. The south prefers to pronounce the "ch" as "k", the north says "ch", a sound not existing in English (roughly a "sh" without the s part).

To be honest, the transformation of a hard “h” sound, which doesn’t exist in English (except in Scottish words like “loch”), into a “k” in pan-European words (mostly of Greek origin) like “character” or “chemistry” has always annoyed me. Here again, the name “Chaya” (meaning “living creature”), which is pronounced with a hard, even guttural “h” in the original Hebrew (חיה), gets this silly “k” sound in English for some reason… Oh well, it’s still closer to the original pronunciation than a “sh” or a “ch” like in “choice”.

Disgustingly racist statement, yet the rulers of most ancient Egyptian dynasties were, in fact, not black. The one exception is the Nubian Dynasty, which ruled Egypt for a fairly short time when it was conquered by the Kingdom of Kush in the 8th century BC. Those were undeniably Sub-Saharan Africans, probably related to Cushitic peoples (such as Oromo, Beja, Somalis, Afar, etc.), or today’s Nubians, speakers of Eastern Sudanic languages. There is no consensus as to the precise ethnic components of the general population of Egypt, but, according to the DNA evidence, at least the pharaohs were of Middle Eastern (North African and West Asian) origin, i.e. they resembled ethnically today’s Berbers, Arabs, Assyrians, Jews, etc. They weren’t “white” in the sense of “northern European white”, but they were definitely more “brown” than “black”.

lol how exactly is it "disgustingly racist" when you then go on to explain how the statement was in fact correct. There's no moral component to the statement. Modern egyptians are NOT BLACK, despite having a much higher sub-saharan genome than the ancient egyptians. A few years ago Jada Pinkett released a movie presenting Cleopatra as black, which resulted in huge number of activists acting as if it were fact despite the fact that it's long since been confirmed that she was in fact Macedonian Greek. Is it also "disgustingly racist" to call that out as the ignorant stupidity that it is?

Sub-saharan genes didn't start showing up with much significance in egypt until about 1,500 years ago, the last egyptian pyramid was built between 1550 and 1525 BCE. Ancient egyptians were more closely related to the Near eastern peoples, Turkey, Iraq, Lebanon, Israel, Jordan and Syria, while also being conquered and ruled by Greeks and Romans among many others.

I can't even tell which person is less correct. Strictly speaking, there are no scientific facts. That's a huge strength of science. If the sun came up in the west tomorrow, scientists (after a moment of panic) would just roll that new piece of information into their facts about the universe and start figuring out where they went wrong.

    Anthony Elmore

A moment of panic being cataclysmic seismic events caused by the earth switching rotational directions in less than a day. I don't know the specifics, not a geologist nor a physicist, so I could be wrong on this one, but I feel like the impact that this might have on the earth's liquid core would be somewhat harsh.

Its more than that though. The word theory is used in the context of science because science views everything as a work in progress. We don't know what we don't know. That all evidence points to a specific conclusion, that we can repeat experiments to prove that conclusion does not mean that we won't discover something new, tomorrow, next week, next year or in the next one hundred years. Scientific theories basically mean "The facts as we understand them at this specific moment in time" Everything is subject to new information.

Maybe we should just spell it with an s, and the other ones with a p? Even the greeks don't pronounce those last two with p's anymore (they do the first one, but English doesnt allow initial ps, so why write it?).

Can't even laugh at this. Seen and read of too many carbon monoxide deaths to be amused by this idiocy.

Fun fact: I've almost died of CO poisoning. I don't recommend it.

CO comes from fossil fuels not burning correctly, right?

There's other ways, but yeah, in general, although not only 'fossil' fuels, and it's not a questio of 'correctly', it's more like 'fully', in that the most common process is where the oxygen is limited. Respirators are not specific to CO, CO2, smoke or any other fumes, they're to supply breathable air in any situation.

... and open space fire ... is employed in an engine? Do I read this right? I might have to give back my Diploma, then, because I specialized in internal combustion engines, and I was pretty sure, until now, that the fire involved there does not burn in an open space, but the very function of the machine requires it to take place in a tight space, with limited and coordinated connections to the outside world. That are closed during combustion, all of them. Obviously, I was wrong, didn't pay enough attention or so, because that, I gotn't.

1.5TB of RAM is crazy high, my first assumption would also be that they made a mistake because that is normal size for storage but an insane size for memory. But it turns out to be true, it does indeed support up to 1.5TB of RAM.

Welll... there are things you can change with exercise and things you cant change. Believe me - I would do things for narrower shoulders and wider hips.
