My dad was a truck driver and if I went with him his stores often gave me free goodies or "accidentally" dropped a watermelon that everyone shared. I also remember that he got discounts on returned or damaged goods. $1 for a 50lb bag of dog food $1 for 10lbs of potatoes. I remember one summer he was on his way back to the warehouse when he saw me riding my bike home. Tossed my bike in the trailer and gave me a ride to the end of our road and handed me two cases of close-to-date Polly-o-mozzarella. I ate so much mozzarella that summer... I was sick of it for a long time. but loved it at first.

While I agree that taking PTO is necessary I also must say that sometimes you do have to be careful when you take it off. I am an eLearning Specialist at a University and most of the time taking PTO isn't a problem, there are only two times I am cautious about taking PTO the first and last two weeks of a semester... I am the only person in my position and if I am not here some instructors and therefore some students might have problems completing their course for the semester. Don't get me wrong I have no problem using my PTO.

@Ksenia M I will make a comment about fashion. if you are looking at Russians who grew up in Russia pre-revolution then yes their clothing may look dated and here is why. My MIL is Russian She was born in 1940 so was a child during WW2 and Communist Russia. She was born in Shuya but she grew up in Moscow. While her father was a Metallurgist (who wrote several books on the topic) they didn't have much money they could spend freely, so clothing was well taken care of and worn repeatedly. My MIL told me a story about how she had been saving money for a car and she had almost enough in the bank to buy one when overnight the economy tanked and now that money in the bank was barely enough to buy a chicken! My mother-in-law still wears outfits that she bought over 40 years ago (I know, I have seen the pictures from the '70s and '80s of outfits she still wears). She also told me how at one point in her life her family lived with 3 other families in a 2br flat.

My last job had 4 rounds one asking my intended salary and when I could start, and actual in-person interview, a written test, then the meeting with the boss. for a 3/4 time position (I have a PhD) I got the job and was assured in a year or two I would be made full-time... nearing the 3-year mark, with no full-time in sight only excuses, I applied to, got interviewed, and hired for a FULL-TIme better situation in 2 weeks... Been there 8 months and love it!

As the mother of a 13-year-old-boy, I am making sure he knows how to treat a woman. He knows about periods and respecting omen, He has stood up for girls at school when other boys act inappropriately toward them and has even walked other girls places "to be safe" I have also been teaching him that if he sees a girl (even one that he does not know) looking uncomfortable around a guy to pretend to be friends with the girl to get her out of the situation. Heck, he even did this for a gay boy he knew of but didn't really know. I would have loved to have had a daughter but I was blessed with a son. It's my job to raise him to be a gentleman and not a sexist jerk.

Unfortunately, in the US even 1-2 weeks of paid vacation is unheard of for a lot of Blue-collar jobs. Paid sick leave is laughable. And that is only for Full-time employees. Part-time no paid days off and no paid sick leave. I am fortunate to have 5 1/2 weeks paid vacation time PLUS we get gift time at Christmas.

My grandfather hated his neighbor. They lived next to each other for 20+ years. I remember well my grandfather raging at every opportunity about this guy. We never saw them speak to each other. In Grandpa's will, he left the guy $10K, a car, and golf clubs. We were dumbstruck. Turns out, they were good buddies from the army. When they coincidentally bought homes next to each other, they decided to play a long scam with both their families. They actually played golf together two to three times per week and had a monthly poker game for years.
