You need look no further than the day’s news headlines, or your social media feed, to notice that the world has the potential to be a really dark and negative place sometimes. Throw in a few social media trolls, cyber bullies, keyboard warriors and general online jerks, and you’d be forgiven for wondering where on earth humanity is heading. Perhaps straight to the depths of hell?

But we’re here to tell you that it’s really not all doom and gloom. There are actually plenty of examples of internet interactions that glow bright in the darkness of it all. If you’re struggling to find them, look no further than an online community called “Gates Open, Come On In.” Over 373,000 people have joined the page, which has only two rules: “No gatekeeping” and “Be nice!” It sounded promising to us so we took a step in… We were greeted by a wall of positive posts about strangers having each other’s backs online.

Because sharing is caring, Bored Panda has put together our favorites, just for you. Keep scrolling and allow the weight of the world to disappear. Feel free to come back to them any and every time you need a reminder that things aren’t all as bad as they might seem.

The advantage of excluding friendly, polite and helpful people, just because they don't match some rigid, boring standard, always escaped me.

Exactly. And I am perfectly happy to pay that plumber their going rate to change my wax ring thing, or install a shower, or other plumbing things. Just like I would be perfectly happy to design that plumber a web site for my own going rate. Because I'm much better at coding than plumbing.

When my boys were in their junior years of high school, they were each given some kind of standardized test that was supposed to indicate what type of career their interests and skills would serve them best in. My older boy, who just happens to have had serious anxiety issues (due to his birth mother messing with his head pre-teen), was advised that the business/office world would be right for him. OMG!! He tried so very hard to find ANY aspect of business/office that could/would appeal to him... But it just wasn't to be. NOTHING about an everyday, 9-5, suits and ties, big money board meetings etc. appealed to him. And wouldn't you know it? He ended up in a severe depression feeling like something must be wrong with him to not be interested in something that "the experts" said he should be. Thank GOD I -- having just taken him fully into our "logical family" after years of ins & outs -- recognized how bad he was beating himself up. We sat down for a long talk. Thankfully, the right words made their way from my soul to my lips and I was able to put his mind at ease. Reminding him that HE is HIM. A unique fellow that we are blessed to have in our lives. Nothing could hold him back from doing what his heart desired if he was willing to put in the effort. Finally, the speech I gave all 3 of my kiddos: As long as it doesn't involve reproducing or anything illegal, NOTHING you do before the age of 25 should be done with any expectation of a lifelong commitment to the work, activity, issue, place, mate etc. Use that pre-25 time to bounce around, try different things (all 3 tried college...not for them and they make more $$ than many that graduate college) then you will know when you've got what is right. Just don't settle for something. Follow your true desires to find your happiness. And indeed, when each of them turned 25, they all came back and said it was almost as if light came on and they suddenly felt like real, adult human beings. They acknowledged just how different they are, how they really grew, between 18 & 25 years of age.

As it happens, the plumber doesn't think his/her client is dumb. They just think the client has a job that needs doing and they're the ones who know how to do it. I can do some basic plumbing, but you know what? A professional can do it much quicker than me, and when it comes to problem solving, they've got me beat hollow because of their training and experience. Here's a link to one version of a very old joke on the subject: https://medium.com/indian-thoughts/lesson-of-the-week-its-all-about-knowing-where-to-hit-ec08b5ced0c6

With more than 5.6 billion people using the internet, it’d be unrealistic to expect to find only positive posts and interactions between strangers. There’s a massive mix of personalities, cultures, religions, beliefs, and of course, moods. So there are bound to be some, if not many, clashes. Plus, let’s be honest. For people used to privilege, equality for others feels like losing their own rights. When you're used to feeling superior, having to admit that you were only "above" others because they were being held down can feel like an attack. So much anger from bigots is a stunted psyche protecting itself.

Never underestimate how much of an impact your posts could have on someone else. Positive or negative. “Consider, for instance, the act of leaving a supportive comment on a post by someone who has been subjected to online hate. By doing so, you offer a lifeline of positivity in a sea of negativity,” writes LGBTQ+ rights activist, Desi Napoles.

“Your small gesture demonstrates to the individual that they are not alone in their struggles and that kindness exists even in the digital world. This single act can inspire others who witness it to follow suit, creating a domino effect of compassion and support that extends beyond the digital realm and permeates real-life interactions.”

I have a traditional corporate job but I also work as a nanny/babysitter sometimes. People who think I'm "just" a nanny speak differently to me before they learn I just do it because I love it and it's not my career. Frankly, taking care of kids is MUCH harder than my desk job! I despise people who look down on others.

Why don't we take all the money from the useless CEOs who don't deserve it, and give it to the people that do? You know, the ones that actually do the work? The ones we were calling 'heroes' and 'essential' just a few short years ago? The ones without whom the entire world comes to a halt? Forgot about us already, didn't you?

My grampa, may he be RingIP, said there's no such thing as "just a job". Everyone working is providing someone else with a service they can't do for themselves, therefore making their lives easier. That means every job & every worker matters.

When I was in grad school, I had two painting advisers who would come to my tiny university-supplied studio. One ripped me to shreds each time. ‘Why is EVERYTHING you paint a portrait? John Singer Sargent you are not.” The other said that the very things I most valued frustrated her. She was very abstract, I am less so. But, she told me the same thing as the art teacher above— “make me hate it more.” And so I did. Art is personal. She knew that. The other professor only saw it as academic.

One of the easiest ways to brighten someone's day is with a simple smile. And maybe a 'hello.' You might be the first and only person to do that for them... Another small gesture is holding the door open, or letting someone with less groceries than you skip the queue.

"Though it may seem like common courtesy, holding a door open is a genuine sign of care," notes HealthLine. "Especially when it comes to mothers with strollers, those in wheelchairs, or anyone who’s got their arms full. This small gesture can make someone’s life a little easier, even for just a moment."

People who say they would kick out/disown their child for being gay should not be having children. Can you imagine raising your child, whom you love more than anything else in the world, for 16 years then disowning them for being themselves? The amount of hate you would need to do that is astonishing.

My wife and I lived in Pflugerville for almost 10 years before moving out of state. We picked it precisely because of the sense of humor you see, above. Oh, and the way they absolutely lean into the whole 'Pf' thing. Their high school football stadium is even named simply, "The Pfield." Oh, and because they are located in between (sort of) Austin and Round Rock, one of their slogans is "Between a Rock and a Weird Place." Pflugerville is awesome.

I hope she told the dad. I was at Wawa (it's a cross between a bodega and a sandwich shop) with my then 6 year old. They have these monitors where you place your order, and my daughter was asking me all these questions about how the monitors worked. I am an engineer, so I was trying to answer in a way that a 6 year old would understand. They also asked about the power button and wanted to press it to see it work. I told them not to press it because it would make it hard for the next customers. This woman walks over to me and tells me that she's a teacher, and she was loving our conversation, because I was keeping my daughter engaged and encouraging their curiosity, while also setting boundaries. Best compliment I've ever received, and I think about it a lot.

So many people think that bravery is just not being scared - when it is quite the opposite. Its really easy doing things you are not afraid of. Anyone can do that. Its going through with it despite that fear that makes you brave. And admitting you are scared DEF takes bravery.

Proverbs 6:16-19 specifically lists people that God hates. More specifically, things people do that God hates. None of them are being gay, BUT one of them IS pretentious people who think they are better than other people.

Yeah, no. Old Testament God hated a LOT of people and messed them RIGHT UP if they displeased him. New Testament God is a lot fluffier and nicer. If you don't believe me, ask the people in Sodom or Gomorrah...wait, you can't, they got obliterated because God didn't like them.

Dammit this so many downvotes and I can't reply is a real roadblock. Anyway, nm, since I can't reply to you now, "be fruitful and multiply" could mean that once you've impregnated your lawful wife, you can stick it wherever you like. A bit like old school aristos, marry and make heirs, then you've done your duty.

I am going to add this to your remarks because, as you said, we cannot reply to nm: if nm actually believes what they said, that means infertile/sterile/impotent people are committing sin if they partake of "sexual engagement". That's ludicrous at best and blasphemy at worst.

I never went to church - every sunday at 10am we (dad and me, and sometimes mom) watched Star Trek on the CBC. When I look back to find where my values come from I often think about Star Trek and how I took so many of their lessons to heart. Their multi cultural crew was just normal for me. Ahead of its time and a blessing for the world.

The battles that Mr Roddenberry went through to get to show some scenes are legendary. To wit: Kirk kissing Uhura in "Plato's Stepchildren" and the Frank Gorshin episode "Let That Be Your Last Battlefield" for just two of many. And remember, after it was rejected by the networks it was rescued by Lucille Ball.

Years ago I'd finished work, was coming home, it was around 4.30am, getting light during summer and saw a guy being full on being kicked, punched... It was a "gaybash". I screamed/shouted at the "males" - "WHAT THE ACTUAL F**K! GET OFF HIM!!!". Ran down the stairs. They ran off. I had an unopened bottle of water I'd just bought from work, phoned for an ambulance and the police while cleaning him up. It all went to court. They were found guilty and recieved suspended sentences. One actually went to prison for 6months. F*ck Homophobes and Homophobia... So this sign makes me epic happy 👍🙂

I would rather say I was a waiter than another rich a*****e like this person. Waiting tables performs a legit service. Rich people may be worth more in their own mind, but the only ones who "care" about them are just waiting for them to die. Wealth and status are meaningless and death is a wonderful equalizer.

We broke down last year and hired a housecleaner every 2 weeks. She works a HORRIBLE schedule to keep her family going. When she quoted us a ridiculously low price we said Nope. We insisted on paying her more than she asked. Every day I am so thankful that she's willing to come and keep our house nice and save our sciatica. Every time she's here, we tell her so. I absolutely cannot tolerate people who refuse to cook for themselves one evening, then s**t all over the waiters helping save them from that chore. WTF people? Having anyone serve you is a blessing, so start acting like humans and not rabid dogs for a change and stop biting these helpful folks!

It's a difficult job. Many people see it as not really adding anything of worth to the labor force, as a transient stop-gap between "real" jobs, but it's a career for many, or at least a long-term investment, with insurance, 401K, PTO, vacations. At least where I worked. But it's also hours and hours and hours on your feet without a break. It's memory and strategy and social work and comedy and crying in the walk in freezer and learning how to keep some kind of smile when your customers insult you or grab your a*s while sweat is running down your back and your blood sugar is dropping. It's hard labor carrying trays loaded with 30-40 pounds or more. I did this job for over 15 years to pay the mtg, the utilities, pay for food, doctors. And some days you don't make enough to finish off the rent - but at least the kids have milk for breakfast.

I've been active in my area's alcohol recovery community for a long time (12 years sober myself). I recently was forced to step back from those commitments in order to address some personal responsibilities. I felt really bothered by it because I was worried that it meant I was no longer being useful or of service to others. A good friend of mine reminded me that I by stepping back and taking care of my personal life meant that I was not only in a position to enjoy the gifts of my sobriety now, but I was giving someone else a chance to step up and be of service.

Congrats on your sobriety and on your ability to make your health a priority!! You can’t take care of anyone else in the future if you let yourself fall into a state of disrepair (for lack of a better term). By taking care of yourself, you’re putting yourself in the best place to be able to go back to what you were doing. You can’t pour from an empty cup ❤️

There will be times when the struggle seems impossible. I know this already. Alone, unsure, dwarfed by the scale of the enemy. Remember this: Freedom is a pure idea. It occurs spontaneously and without instruction. Random acts of insurrection and defiance are occurring constantly throughout the country. Whole communities and states have no idea that they’ve already enlisted in the cause. Remember that the frontier of the battle against Trump is everywhere. And even the smallest act of disobedience or protest pushes our lines forward. And then remember this: Trump’s need for control is desperate because it is unnatural. Tyranny requires constant effort. It breaks, it leaks. Authority is brittle. Oppression is the mask of fear. And know this: the day will come when all these protests, opposition, and moments of disobedience will have flooded the banks of Trump’s authority, and then there will be one too many. One single thing will break his power. Remember this. Try. Reply 45

I have considered this on occasion, but I'd have to agree. Whether they're mammalian or piscine inside, they live in water. Continence wouldn't be a big priority. It would also be some interesting logistics to balance on a sitting toilet - a squat might be better for them. Especially if they're more mammalian and their external genitalia are higher up than a fish's would be. (I'm thinking WAY too much about this)

I definitely feel this. I am no celebrity but I (F65) am about 30 kg overweight. I know that, but what some people who met me recently don't know is that I gained weight because of antidepressants I took after my 51yo husband's d**th, the long years of staying in bed because I didn't want to live anymore, the therapies I had to undergo when I got breast cancer... They just say I am fat. Please always try to understand what's behind someone's aspect

Lol. I met him a long time ago when I worked at an art gallery in Nashville. He put me on the guest list for his show that night and acted offended that I wouldn't hang out with him and his entourage after the show, but my ride was not comfortable with partying with them. Anyway, I think his stage manager, a man named "Warlock" was interested in me. 😬

I used to be able to change a tyre. Taught myself when I first got a car, and I was very proud of that fact, but my dad would have taught me if I hadn't figured it out. I also changed out the battery when it wouldn't charge reliably any more. But then my spine gave up, so it's the RAC for me these days. I might look like a girly girl with skirts and heels (in summer), and the baby blue trims on my wheelchair, but I also own a drill and a full tool kit. Some is inherited, older than me, and works very nicely for wheelchair maintenance.

On a road trip with two friends, me a leather interior fitter for a Ferrari dealership, my mate Mike, a maintenance engineer for a huge factory, his brother Ian, an engineer at an aerospace factory, we had years of experience and knowledge between us, got a flat tyre, the wheel nuts were over tight, wheel wrench bent with our first attempt to remove the nuts. Three of us tried and failed to remove them. AA came to our rescue, just because you KNOW a lot doesn’t always mean you can DO a lot. PS we all have extending wheel wrenchs in our cars now 😂

The coffee corner is a pretty standard thing in grocery shops. The "kletskassa" is unique to the Jumbo stores, however, the need for it depends on location. In our little village you just chat, only during summer with the impatient tourists this is an issue.

This is a brilliant idea. I am a chatter to random strangers. I used to hate it when people would seemingly decide I needed to know all about their surgeries and their kids when waiting at train stations as a kid. I thought how do I turn off the "come talk to me random weirdos" sign over my head. Then one of our mental health tutors at uni talked about the randoms that would chat to/at him as a younger person and how he had felt the same until one person said "you just looked like someone who could help me feel less alone and I won't end myself today thank you" and it became a lighbulb moment for me that others saw something in me that I did not necessarily. From then I was happy to be "Have a chat Harriet" for others because it could make the difference literally between life and d3@th for someone

I was checking out at WalMart recently and the cashier automatically said..."how are you today?". Well, I was having a very bad emotional day thanks to my narcissistic son.....so I said, "Not too good actually....I'm struggling with heartache and sadness coz my son is causing all kinds of problems"...then we talked for about 5 minutes....and when we were done I said " I'd better let you get back to work....take care...." se said..."I hope your son gets better....ANAD THANKS FOR TALKING TO ME!" cashiers don't get noticed as actual people....they just fall into the "robot" genre and I imagine it gets lonely to not actually talk to a real person....I didn't think about this before that day....

There were several restaurants in the Austin TX area that, when the whole bathroom thing went haywire in 2015 or so, simply changed all of their (single toilet) bathrooms to be unisex. No muss, no fuss. Some of them even took out the urinals from the formerly male bathrooms and replaced them with baby changing stations. This is the way.

I’m old school. I need a paper book in my hands. I’m a visual person and have a hard time following along with audio books, and Kindles trigger my migraines (even the ones that aren’t supposed to). But with the very limited exception of a few favorite authors, I only buy used books so I’m not contributing to more paper and other resources being used.

Pretty much standard on big arena events with big banners and flags. It's just for the tifo, as soon as the game starts everything is put away. I once were at a game where they covered the whole audience in fabric in different colors. Didn't make much sense to me at the time, but the pictures were amazing afterwards

If you feel the need to gatekeep an art form that you love then I’ve gotta question your love for it. Don’t you want everyone to see, hear, feel, enjoy how awesome it is? I’ve had a love for metal since my baby metal head days of 1982, this week I discovered new music that a young bloke at a gig recommended to me, I’m now a 50 year old who took a recommendation from a bloke who was about 20. To a degree this probably happens around the world. Look up something called "Buffalo Grill" to see a French restaurant chain that's a strange mashup between cowboys and Indians and Tex-Mex, oh and the musak is country songs. *Only* country songs. And some of the women at work have a quirky game that they play - they sing a song in English and I have to guess what they're singing. Well I like symphonic metal so probably couldn't name one single song in the top forty for this entire decade, and *they* *don't* *speak* *any* *English*! It's...interesting.

I've been lucky enough to be able to afford Xboxes, PlayStation's, Switches and PCs, and I'll play on whatever platform the games I want to play are on. Console / PC gatekeeping is stupid. Small things indeed have a positive impact. Buy your meat from a place that treats animals well and has a respectful way to slaughter them. Or have meat only once or twice a week. Or just start to realize how many chickens are in you family bucket of KFC and if the price includes good treatment of these chickens

I'll be 46 this year. I had my first big, powerful, ugly cry when —of all things— my cat died. She was old and sick, and we knew it was coming, but it hits different when you know the cat picked you. She'd crawl up on my belly and take a nap. When she finally passed, I was a d**n wreck. And I'd do it all over again tomorrow.

It is usually a different shade of green, often it is closer to a shade of yellow. That for me is always why green meant to stay against a green screen looks weird. They have to determine based on lighting, camera, etc. what shade to use.

I introduce this to my students every year. I tell them the story of that last track. I usually manage to bring a few to Nirvana every year. Really though, I just love it, and teaching them the story is an excuse to listen. (Don't tell them.)

My son is like this. He wears band shirts for fashion. He likes a lot of music but the fashion he likes is rap, I think he likes some rap but not always the artists he wears. I'll admit that to me it's unusual, but I could care less if someone likes the artist they are wearing or not.

If you get up to per at night, you can: 1) Turn the light on, ruin your night vision and made it harder to go back to sleep. 2) Pee in the dark, and probably get pee elsewhere. 3) Sit down. I once asked a group of guys how they pee in the middle of the night… None of them admitted they sit down, and therefore, were all fools!

Among us is a popular multilayer on line game, particularly with kids. A fair amount of cartoon violence. The idea is you are on a spaceship but one of you is an alien. Every one has tasks or mini games to complete and the alien also has to "k**l' someone. When another player finds the body everyone votes who the killer was and they are thrown out the ship. Game ends when the alien is found.

It is absolutely what I want. Some of my most precious memories are of those rare times I had someone in my life who loved me. Waking up in the morning, wrapping my arms around her, and she, not even fully awake, just knowing she feels warm and safe there, lays her head on my shoulder. Just staying like that, feeling her against me, her being soothed by my heart beat. Those moments mean everything to me, and its so hard spending each day alone.

My Ace teen has no role models and is constantly bombarded with the idea that a person is missing out if they aren't coupled up. That they are somehow not whole because they want to be single. Not everyone who is not coupled up is lonely.

this was me with undertale. i played a neutral route first, then i decided to play the true pacifist route. and after that...i didn't feel like i needed to play the no mercy route. why should i subject myself and the characters i grew to know and love to violence, even if it's not even real?
