When You Reach 100 Years Old In Barbados, You Get A Stamp In Your Honour

Finland's Way To End Homelessness
Finland more or less ended homelessness nationwide with a genius idea. They decided to provide people with a small apartment and mental health counseling - without any preconditions. Four out of five people in the program make their way back into a stable life with a job, housing, sobriety, and peace.
This would never work in the US because of the bizarre Protestant work ethic - people honestly believe that those with nothing have nothing because they are "unworthy."
And the idea of free health care for the homeless when no-one else has it would cause a heart attack
Load More Replies...Finland treating homeless and mentally ill people as human beings. What a strange concept, don't you think America?
I think it would work in the US because there are a lot people who want to change. There's a lot of people with strong work ethic.
It's desirable, and the right thing to do, up to a point. But it would be impossible because the powers would not allow it. So, it wouldn't work. It's unrealistic.

Jose Mujica: The Poorest President
He was a revolutionary who fought with the Tupamaros against the US backed right wing dictatorship, was shot six times in a sting operation, led massive prison escapes twice, spent 15 years in jail in inhumane conditions, started a political party as soon as he regained freedom, was elected as Senator, then Minister, then President. Then, inheriting a broke country in turmoil, he passed a lot of liberal and progressive laws bringing Uruguay to the top in any social metric among South American countries and leaving a healthy economy at the end of his mandate. He died a couple months ago.
What a shining example of what a politician *should* be. This is so completely the opposite of what's happening with the orange clown. Lessons could be learned - but won't be.

Mesh Netting That Catches The Trash Before It Goes Into The Ocean
Scale. It might work fine for a town of a few thousand but when you have to deal with a city of a million, you need much more elaborate water treatment. I've actually dealt with industrial water treatment. It's a tricky and underappreciated task.
Load More Replies...The worst thing I ever Saw was on TV. There had been a flood in a country I wont name. At this small village bridge so much plastic and trash was accumulating. So they took an excavator and lifted it to dumb it on the other side so it could keep flowing down stream and into the ocean. There was so much it almost flowed onto the bridge. An obvious opportunity to collect a ton of trash. And they close to pass it on to the next guy. That made me really sad!
I'm seeing these ideas popping up in several countries. Amazing it took people in authority so d@mn long to figure this out. Maybe future generations will be able to eat fish without their daily quota of plastic and marine animals can live a bit better and longer.
It is a good thing to start; a first step. It will also serve as a visual reminder of how much garbage is dumped into streams. No, it won't be workable for large cities simply because of the volume of garbage they produce. We need to return to the strong emotional pleas to citizens to clean up their lives. Not everyone will be open to receiving those messages though. AND OF GREAT IMPORTANCE: Either cut the use of plastics or recycle them!!!
But here’s the twist: that shouldn’t be discouraging. In fact, it can be motivating. Being an interesting person isn’t a competition, it’s a chance to grow. So how do you do it?
Arlin Cuncic, MA, author of The Anxiety Workbook and founder of About Social Anxiety, shared some practical advice in a piece for Verywell Mind. And spoiler: it’s not as hard as it sounds.
A German Circus Is Using Holograms Instead Of Live Animals For A Cruelty-Free Experience
I remember going to the circus as a child. Honestly I would have found this more impressive than live animals.
I traveled with the Clyde Beatty/ Cole Bros. Circus for a bit back in the 70's. The life of circus animals is not a good one.
When Ringling Bros. was in town, my father took me to see it, because he thought I should experience a three-ring circus once in my life. The ONLY memory I have of it was being disturbed by the way they treated the elephants who clearly did not want to perform.
Thankfully they no longer use animals in the shows and all their elephants were retired to a sanctuary. My cousin and his wife were members of the circus for years. He was a drummer in the band and she was an acrobat who rode on the elephants.

Now This Is How You Shoot An Elephant
When I visited Thailand, I went to an elephant sanctuary for “breakfast with the elephants.” They were all rescued elephants living a good life on the sanctuary and we got to feed them breakfast. Later that day I was so disgusted to see waaaaaay too many tourists riding elephants and giving money to their abusers. (Not at the sanctuary obvs, this was elsewhere, the problematic animal tourism you hear about sometimes). The elephants looked so sad and broken. I was so angry that so many people still didn’t know better and were happy to partake in abuse of an animal for a Facebook photo.
I was a kid when the rich could shoot and killl wild animals with safaris or even from the safety of helicopters and proudly exhibit their victims.

Load More Replies...A Rare White Lion
Sorry to be a party pooper but... the trend of white "Big Cats" in zoos is very ethically troublesome. They are a fan favorite, so most zoos try to get one and they are prized; unfortunately the white gene is recessive, so to have a white cub you have most often to recur to inbreeding. Those white animals come mostly from a few "feline mills", so many of the white tigers, lions etc in zoos are related, further raising the inbreeding chance. This lead to a swath of genetic defects and illnesses on those animals, often related to chronic pain. ALL living white tigers, as an example, are direct descendants of a single indian tiger named Mohan captured in India in the 1950s and deceased in 1969.

Load More Replies...Operation ABSCAM, it's the inspiration for the movie American Hustle. They employed a convicted professional con artist and her girlfriend posing as arab investors proposing an investment scheme aided by bribery; they convicted 7 representatives, plus a few local politicians. Ethically, it was a clusterf*ck. First, the operation was legally obvious "Entrapment", in direct opposition with 40 years of legislation; they got away with it because the appeal court applied a debatable interpretation of Sherman v. US and the Supreme court, that at the time was quite right leaning, refused to address the case. Second, the investigation was clearly politically targeted, with all the 30 or so potential targets being Democrats save for one (Larry Pressler, Senator for South Dakota and political adversary of Reagan), plus one other that involved himself without much pressure (Richard Kelly, R-FL)
When the operation became public it was evident -and was brought up in the trials- that the whole operation was designed to hit Democrats, likely under pressure from the Reagan white house. The Washington Post called it an "hit list" in the style of an authoritarian and totalitarian government. TIME raised severe concerns about the ethics and methods used. The investigation targeted mostly representatives that backed Ted Kennedy in the 1980s primaries, who had expressed concerns about FBI practices and was vocally critical on how the FBI dealt with civil protests, minority leaders etc; some of the indicted were active in calling for congressional probes into the FBI operations.

At first, I wondered why it hadn’t moved as the water receded—until I noticed the pile of pink eggs beside it. It became clear that the fish stayed to protect its young. Male catfish often guard the eggs and fend off potential threats, sometimes even from the mother. This was one of the most remarkable examples of survival I've witnessed in swamps. Cypress swamps are tough environments, shaped by seasonal water fluctuations that influence the lives of their inhabitants. Slanic Prahova salina. It's beyond impressive. You feel so small and insignificant between those huge multi-millennial salt walls.
are any old mines like these open to tourists? the way its carved out is mesmerising
just a thought here - will mining all this underground salt, and spreading it on food and roads, end up altering the environment? making the earth's surface and oceans saltier?
Fantastic. It looks like a contemporary cathedral made of marble.

The Difference Between An Alligator (Left) And A Crocodile (Right)
Unfortunately, the snouts (maws? Not a native speaker) go the exact opposite from what would have been a good mnemonic, like crocodile: "C" snout, alligator: "A" snout). Makes it more difficult to not mix them up.
The easy way to remember which is which: one has a pointy snout like the letter A, the other one is the Alligator.
Also, crocs aren't usually found in the US while Florida is Alligator Alley Alcatraz.

A Prison Cell In Norway
It’s almost inexplicable, isn’t it, that treating already alienated people like dog shìt doesn’t make them thinking "aah, I see your point, I shall now go out into the world and behave”. They’re locked up, they didn’t get to chose when or where, and they’ve lost their freedom. That’s their punishment. The time should be spent rehabilitating them, not telling them that actually society doesn’t regard them as human.
Load More Replies...That's way better than my 9meters "apartment" when I was at University !
See this and bear in mind that mass marderer Breivik sued the State, complaining for inhuman prison conditions. I would had put a bullet on his head.
In Sweden, prison food is roughly 21 sek ($)2,20 per portion, while the school children's food is worth 9 sek ($0,94) per portion. Every country that spends less money on the future, and more on people who behave so badly they have to be locked up should be ashamed.
That seems reductive to me. I can't imagine children require the same size portions, for one. Furthermore, school lunches ideally won't be the children's primary food source, whereas prisoners only have the one provider.

When Israeli President Chaim Weizmann Died In 1952, Einstein Was Asked To Be Israel's Second President, But He Declined
At the time, the title of President was -and still mostly is- purely a ceremonial title devoid of any actual power. The real power stands with the Prime Minister. We all know who is in charge of Israel right now, the beloved ultra-right conservative war criminal Benjamin Netanyahu; how many of you ever heard of Isaac Herzog and Reuven Rivlin, the two presidents serving with Netanyahu? The only well known Israeli president is Shimon Peres, and only because he also served as a Prime Minister...
Let me give you an example of the type of power the President has in Israel. Rivlin was a supporter of giving full civil rights to the Palestinian population. Sure, he was still a right-winger and he wanted to do so by annexation of the West Bank, as is Israeli tradition, but at least he wanted to do it peacefully. He condemned the attacks on Palestinian settlements, that he called "Jewish Terror*sm", and stood against a religious group who tried to enforce discriminative politics against Arabs and Jews of african origin. He supported the recognizing of the Armenian genocide, and pointed out the first Netanyahu authoritarian actions. Not a perfect man by a long shot, but far more decent than Netanyahu, yet NONE of us ever heard of him and his politics had no impact on the authoritarian evolution of Likud.

Three Cages From The Middle Ages Hang On A Church In Germany
The cages hang on the tower of St Lamberti in Münster, once exhibiting the corpses of the three leaders of the Anabaptist movement that rebelled against the Bishop of Münster and took over control of the town in the early 16th century. When they were eventually captured, they were heavily tortured and their corpses hung up in these cages as a warning.
Soon? in his first term Trump had a history of holding immigrants, including children, in cages.
Load More Replies...St. Lambert in Munster. The cages were used for the exposure of the bodies of the three leaders of the Munster Rebellion (an attempt to instaurate a theocratic government in the city bt radical Anabaptists) after it was quashed.
Those cages look like they're made out of iron. The AI search assistant I've just asked says they're made of iron. I struggle to accept that they're the original 1536 constructions - iron, hanging outdoors in northern Europe, for 489 years? Why have they not rusted away? https://todayinhistory.blog/2022/06/24/june-24-1535-the-cages-of-munster/ (repairs were made in 1944 after bombing. The steeple was replaced in 1880 and the cages re-installed. Either event might have involved some sort of replacement or partial replacement)

I am the Spirit of Dark and Lonely Water, ready to trap the unwary, the show-off, the fool, and this is the kind of place you’d expect to find me. But no-one expects to find me here… it seems too ordinary. But that pool is deep. The boy is showing off. The bank is slippery. The show-offs are easy. But the unwary ones are easier still. This branch is weak, rotten, it’ll never take his weight. Only a fool would ignore this. But there’s one born every minute. Under the water there are traps.

There Is A Peanut Butter Cookie Recipe On The Back Of This Grave
Ok. I'll consider doing the same, but the recipe is so easy, you don't even have to weigh or measure any. About the same amount of ground hazelnuts, wheat and sugar. In a mixing bowl. Now, the machine comes in, kneading it, and while that goes on, you add vegetable fat until the pieces of dough have the right size and hardness (you know it when you see it). Take two teaspoons, take a bit of dough, on the sheet, hammer it flat and round, about 1 cm or so thick, in the preheated oven, like 20 minutes, check then, and if they become hard, you're done. Collect, let cool, enjoy.
Add a pinch of salt and then I'm into it. Unless that fat was salted butter, in which case you're off the hook.

My guess would be lenticular clouds. Moist non-turbulent air blows over a hill, the air cools as it gets lifted, which makes the moisture precipitate as a cloud. It appears to stay still, and the shape resembles a stack of lenses.
You need just the right terrain, moisture, a bit of breeze, but not a lot of shear ... it's pretty rare. It also looks freaky as f**k, so a lot of UFO sightings can be traced back to lenticular clouds.
