Here you get a telegram from the reigning monarch. So if you want a spaniel-o-gram, you know where to have your centenary! Also, you can have a card from the monarch for 60 years of marriage - gutted that I didn't apply for this for my parents - fingers crossed they make their 70th and I'll get the one then!

Finland has about 5.5 million people. The US has over 350 million people. Finland doesn’t provide millions of dollars in foreign aid, but has put its finances into development. The US gives BILLIONS in foreign aid and couldn’t possibly provide millions of people this type of assistance, but we do have many more facilities than most other countries.

Then, inheriting a broke country in turmoil, he passed a lot of liberal and progressive laws bringing Uruguay to the top in any social metric among South American countries and leaving a healthy economy at the end of his mandate. The worst thing I ever Saw was on TV. There had been a flood in a country I wont name. At this small village bridge so much plastic and trash was accumulating. So they took an excavator and lifted it to dumb it on the other side so it could keep flowing down stream and into the ocean. There was so much it almost flowed onto the bridge. An obvious opportunity to collect a ton of trash. And they close to pass it on to the next guy. That made me really sad!

It is a good thing to start; a first step. It will also serve as a visual reminder of how much garbage is dumped into streams. No, it won't be workable for large cities simply because of the volume of garbage they produce. We need to return to the strong emotional pleas to citizens to clean up their lives. Not everyone will be open to receiving those messages though. AND OF GREAT IMPORTANCE: Either cut the use of plastics or recycle them!!!

I'm watching Vice TV's "Sports Gone Wrong" and the "Fan Interference" episode has some astonishing examples of spectators in the stands physically intervening to snatch balls away from outfielders' hands.

Yes, it is a stark reminder of differences in values when compared to what happens when a ball goes into the stands in the USA. How many times do you see adults grab it away from a child, or people fight over who got it? And that Japanese girl will keep it and treasure it, instead of trying to sell it for an extreme amount of money! - (American living in Japan for 35 years).

One Thanksgiving Day (1990s) I had to catch a flight from Chicago to Minneapolis due to the death of my grandmother. I was the only person on the flight. I'm sitting my assigned seat in the empty cabin, and the flight attendant invites me to first class and gives me a couple of cocktails. It was surreal being the only passenger on a 747.

If you’re already here, chances are you’ve taken the first step. Because the easiest way to become more interesting is to be genuinely curious about the world and the people in it.

When you’re curious, you’re more likely to ask questions and engage in real conversations. You’re also more open to new experiences.

In fact, social psychologists have found that people who are curious and ask lots of questions are often perceived as more likable than those who don’t, says Cuncic.

When I visited Thailand, I went to an elephant sanctuary for “breakfast with the elephants.” They were all rescued elephants living a good life on the sanctuary and we got to feed them breakfast. Later that day I was so disgusted to see waaaaaay too many tourists riding elephants and giving money to their abusers. (Not at the sanctuary obvs, this was elsewhere, the problematic animal tourism you hear about sometimes). The elephants looked so sad and broken. I was so angry that so many people still didn’t know better and were happy to partake in abuse of an animal for a Facebook photo.

Bullet Trains And Their Security System

Japanese bullet train derailment caused by earthquake detection system that stopped 33 trains, showcasing extraordinary safety measures.

Japanese bullet train system is equipped with a network of sensitive seismometers. On March 11, 2011, one of the seismometers detected an 8.9 magnitude earthquake 12 seconds before it hit and sent a stop signal to 33 trains. As a result, only one bullet train derailed that day.

Here in Boston we've been dealing with our MBTA system that, after years of ignoring the problems and neglect, essentially required a complete overhaul. Still having problems, but progress is being made (thanks to Phil Eng) Many of us are envious of the Japanese rail systems.

TBF, everyone in the world is envious of the Japanese rail system. In the build up to the world cup in 2002 I read that the total delay of all trains the previous year was recorded in seconds. When you buy a ticket, it tells you exactly where to stand on the platform for your seat. In the UK, the birth place of the iron horse, our rail network is an utter shambles in comparison. The high speed train in Kent to London goes at a walking pace between some of the stations.

Sorry to be a party pooper but... the trend of white "Big Cats" in zoos is very ethically troublesome. They are a fan favorite, so most zoos try to get one and they are prized; unfortunately the white gene is recessive, so to have a white cub you have most often to recur to inbreeding. Those white animals come mostly from a few "feline mills", so many of the white tigers, lions etc in zoos are related, further raising the inbreeding chance. This lead to a swath of genetic defects and illnesses on those animals, often related to chronic pain. ALL living white tigers, as an example, are direct descendants of a single indian tiger named Mohan captured in India in the 1950s and deceased in 1969.

Much more realistic than my brother's Davros costume that was essentially a black cloak over his body and wheelchair with round containers underneath and rubber bands securing them to the cloak. It also had a whisk on an armrest. I painted his face like Davros, but it wasn't well done.

And above all, have fun. If you get too caught up in the “how to be interesting” mindset, you’ll forget to do the thing that makes you interesting in the first place: living your life.

A person could. Many people can't. If you've ever hung out in a dance club you know how much people dancing stirs up the smoke from a smoke machine. To make this work in public, you would have to have people willing to hold still and not breath.

This was my pandemic hobby and I’m still doing it. The important thing is, after I make it, I take a picture and then destroy it. THAT IS VERY IMPORTANT!!! Animals and children, as well as plants, can be seriously hurt by the structures. They are TEMPORARY and WILL fall over. The ones I make in my yard are enclosed in a wire box so no one and nothing gets damaged. Even then, they collapse. If you try this, be sure to put the stones back near where you found them.

Yeah it looks neat but personally I HATE this. Where I live, tourists keep doing this freaking everywhere, even in nature reserves. And then of corse even more people show up to take pictures of it. It's not cute, it disturbs the animals and nature in general. For the people who live here this is only one step above excessive littering.

Later he froze to death, in the woods. A lot of people were sad, he never took any help. Another guy my husband wanted to help was similar. There are much problems very deeper than food or a flat.

It is theorized that Mars had water and an atmosphere at one time in the past, but it is not known what happened to change that. There is some question about the possibility that Mars still has water locked up in its crust, and of course in its poles. Until humans actually walk on Mars and conduct studies, it will remain a place that we know little about.

Operation ABSCAM, it's the inspiration for the movie American Hustle. They employed a convicted professional con artist and her girlfriend posing as arab investors proposing an investment scheme aided by bribery; they convicted 7 representatives, plus a few local politicians. Ethically, it was a clusterf*ck. First, the operation was legally obvious "Entrapment", in direct opposition with 40 years of legislation; they got away with it because the appeal court applied a debatable interpretation of Sherman v. US and the Supreme court, that at the time was quite right leaning, refused to address the case. Second, the investigation was clearly politically targeted, with all the 30 or so potential targets being Democrats save for one (Larry Pressler, Senator for South Dakota and political adversary of Reagan), plus one other that involved himself without much pressure (Richard Kelly, R-FL)

    Jrog
    Community Member
5 months ago Created by potrace 1.15, written by Peter Selinger 2001-2017

When the operation became public it was evident -and was brought up in the trials- that the whole operation was designed to hit Democrats, likely under pressure from the Reagan white house. The Washington Post called it an "hit list" in the style of an authoritarian and totalitarian government. TIME raised severe concerns about the ethics and methods used. The investigation targeted mostly representatives that backed Ted Kennedy in the 1980s primaries, who had expressed concerns about FBI practices and was vocally critical on how the FBI dealt with civil protests, minority leaders etc; some of the indicted were active in calling for congressional probes into the FBI operations.

Obviously. If you shrunk earth down to the size of a pool ball, it would actually be smoother than a pool ball. This isn’t that much larger. Without exaggerating the texture, you’d barely see anything.

They are. Moose are known as elk in England. UPDATE: Turns out that Irish elk have been relocated to the the other side of the deer family, which is mostly old-world, so they are no longer in the Alces genus. Their closest relatives are now thought to be falllow deer, Dama dama, even though they look far more like Moose. There is also a Canadian elk, better known as Wapiti in the New World, which tends to use Amerindian/First Nation names; see also "Caribou" for "Reindeer."

    Dad Of The Year

A fascinating aquatic creature hidden in a shallow woodland stream, capturing extraordinary nature discoveries.

"The "Dad of the Year" award goes to a flathead catfish spotted in the Black River, North Carolina. A sudden drop in water left this fish stranded at the base of a decaying tree. At first, I wondered why it hadn’t moved as the water receded—until I noticed the pile of pink eggs beside it. It became clear that the fish stayed to protect its young. Male catfish often guard the eggs and fend off potential threats, sometimes even from the mother. This was one of the most remarkable examples of survival I've witnessed in swamps. Cypress swamps are tough environments, shaped by seasonal water fluctuations that influence the lives of their inhabitants. Although I didn’t wait to see what happened to this devoted father, I was heartened to see the water levels rise just a few days later."

They are formed in voids in rocks, including sandstone, so I'm guessing that is what it is. Based on the coloring, once cut, polished and formed, are worth a lot of $. But opals are very soft and sensitive. Difficult to cut.

Looking at the picture, the crocodile is on YOUR left and the alligator is on YOUR right. Easiest way to tell the difference? Their snouts make the shape of the 1st letter of their names. Crocodile is a curved "C" shape and alligator is a pointed "A" shape.

It’s almost inexplicable, isn’t it, that treating already alienated people like dog shìt doesn’t make them thinking "aah, I see your point, I shall now go out into the world and behave”. They’re locked up, they didn’t get to chose when or where, and they’ve lost their freedom. That’s their punishment. The time should be spent rehabilitating them, not telling them that actually society doesn’t regard them as human.

In Sweden, prison food is roughly 21 sek ($)2,20 per portion, while the school children's food is worth 9 sek ($0,94) per portion. Every country that spends less money on the future, and more on people who behave so badly they have to be locked up should be ashamed.

That seems reductive to me. I can't imagine children require the same size portions, for one. Furthermore, school lunches ideally won't be the children's primary food source, whereas prisoners only have the one provider.

When I was in Belgium on business back in 2017, I actually stayed just across the NL border at the Fletcher de Kempen just outside of Reusel. And I totally geeked out at being able to walk back and forth between countries. Yes, I am easily amused.

Yes, the computer took up an entire room. It was the only room in the factory that was air-conditioned -- needed to be, with all the heat that was given off. Besides the tape drives we had a magnetic drum that stood man-high and provided 3 MB of storage: wow!

At the time, the title of President was -and still mostly is- purely a ceremonial title devoid of any actual power. The real power stands with the Prime Minister. We all know who is in charge of Israel right now, the beloved ultra-right conservative war criminal Benjamin Netanyahu; how many of you ever heard of Isaac Herzog and Reuven Rivlin, the two presidents serving with Netanyahu? The only well known Israeli president is Shimon Peres, and only because he also served as a Prime Minister...

Let me give you an example of the type of power the President has in Israel. Rivlin was a supporter of giving full civil rights to the Palestinian population. Sure, he was still a right-winger and he wanted to do so by annexation of the West Bank, as is Israeli tradition, but at least he wanted to do it peacefully. He condemned the attacks on Palestinian settlements, that he called "Jewish Terror*sm", and stood against a religious group who tried to enforce discriminative politics against Arabs and Jews of african origin. He supported the recognizing of the Armenian genocide, and pointed out the first Netanyahu authoritarian actions. Not a perfect man by a long shot, but far more decent than Netanyahu, yet NONE of us ever heard of him and his politics had no impact on the authoritarian evolution of Likud.

The cages hang on the tower of St Lamberti in Münster, once exhibiting the corpses of the three leaders of the Anabaptist movement that rebelled against the Bishop of Münster and took over control of the town in the early 16th century. When they were eventually captured, they were heavily tortured and their corpses hung up in these cages as a warning.

Those cages look like they're made out of iron. The AI search assistant I've just asked says they're made of iron. I struggle to accept that they're the original 1536 constructions - iron, hanging outdoors in northern Europe, for 489 years? Why have they not rusted away? https://todayinhistory.blog/2022/06/24/june-24-1535-the-cages-of-munster/ (repairs were made in 1944 after bombing. The steeple was replaced in 1880 and the cages re-installed. Either event might have involved some sort of replacement or partial replacement)

I am the Spirit of Dark and Lonely Water, ready to trap the unwary, the show-off, the fool, and this is the kind of place you’d expect to find me. But no-one expects to find me here… it seems too ordinary. But that pool is deep. The boy is showing off. The bank is slippery. The show-offs are easy. But the unwary ones are easier still. This branch is weak, rotten, it’ll never take his weight. Only a fool would ignore this. But there’s one born every minute. Under the water there are traps.

It is a lethal stretch of the Wharfe River. According to one source, the narrow stretch is a place where the water changes from its usual horizontal flow to a vertical flow, with underwater caves and holes that trap people. In one instance in 1998, a couple walking on the bank died when the water rose over 5 feet in less than one minute.

Ok. I'll consider doing the same, but the recipe is so easy, you don't even have to weigh or measure any. About the same amount of ground hazelnuts, wheat and sugar. In a mixing bowl. Now, the machine comes in, kneading it, and while that goes on, you add vegetable fat until the pieces of dough have the right size and hardness (you know it when you see it). Take two teaspoons, take a bit of dough, on the sheet, hammer it flat and round, about 1 cm or so thick, in the preheated oven, like 20 minutes, check then, and if they become hard, you're done. Collect, let cool, enjoy.

Free climbing means using your own strength and flexibility to climb but you still use ropes and anchors in case you fall. Free solo is when you use nothing at all. I didn’t know this and thought I’d post this in case others might not know the difference either.

I think it's an AI rendering and the title is deceptive. Which means the one we saw previously was likely AI as well (and I thought at the time that it was not, b/c it looked so well done).

This Showed Up In My Country I Think In This Year Or Last Year But It Freaked Everyone And People Were Talking About It For Weeks. Does Anyone Know What This Could Mean?

Unusual sky phenomenon glowing with a large pale cloud formation above rooftops and power lines at night.

    UberNZ:
My guess would be lenticular clouds. Moist non-turbulent air blows over a hill, the air cools as it gets lifted, which makes the moisture precipitate as a cloud. It appears to stay still, and the shape resembles a stack of lenses.

You need just the right terrain, moisture, a bit of breeze, but not a lot of shear ... it's pretty rare. It also looks freaky as f**k, so a lot of UFO sightings can be traced back to lenticular clouds.

... a man who was eating his 4th McRib in one session - and still had two more to go through - once told me "If you'd ever have tried a McRib, you'd never have stopped eating meat!". Actually, a McRib is among the last five servings of meat I ever ate. The sauce was good. The onions, too. The meat ... thing ... well ... I guess it tasted somewhat well, but to be honest, even back then, with the bad meat replacements of the nineties, I wouldn't have been sure if this was meat-goo, plant-goo, or a mix of whatever is cheap and considered non-lethal. Dude with his six McRibs ... I don't have to tell you how he looked, do I? Ok. Fat, frighteningly fat. "Please don't have more than five strokes today!"-fat.

Here in the UK, toilet downpipes generally have a vent to the outside air at the top. If the same applies to US hotel construction - well, that air will be better to breath than toxic smoke.
