43 Times Car Mechanics Had To Take Pics Of What They Were Seeing To Make Others Believe Them (New Pics)
Mechanics recommend that we bring our cars in for maintenance visits every six or 12 months. But blessed be the car owner who actually does that. In reality, owners wait an average of four months before addressing their "check engine" lights. Perhaps, then, it's no surprise that mechanics have to deal with all sorts of crazy situations.
The community "Just Rolled Into The Shop" on Reddit collects the funniest and wildest things auto mechanics have come across on the job. Exhaust pipe on an electric car? Check! A car frame rusted so badly it has holes in it? Check! So, Pandas, scroll down and see the newest examples of the madness mechanics have to deal with almost daily.

C/S: Noise From Car
Are you out of your mind?!? Don't you like breathing? (Yeah, yeah, I know, I think I'll be following your brilliant idea! 😀😆)
Load More Replies...I love this one! Having been the guy who pranks (Thanks Grandpa for being a great teacher), I never thought of a harmonica, but this is genius. Some of my favorites are giant Zip Ties on driveshaft, CV axles; Soda cans with nuts/bolts inside, wired to rattle and bang on the frame, gas tank, etc; plastic air horn in the tailpipe; Kazoo attached to underwood air intake; attaching something to the wiper mechanism under the cowl vent to make irritating noises. The list is long, but these are my most used and most annoying!!

I was in charge of updating these with new procedures/costs and the MSDS. That was a full time job because there were 4 stations to do it on.
Just Rolled Into My Shop - Leased A Warehouse After 15 Years Of Working On My Cars In The Street
Parking lot and streetside mechanics are a special breed. They're quick to pull in their feet, look both ways when heading to the toolbox, and tend to have gravel in their hair.
It's probably no secret why cars get into conditions like these. The longer we delay servicing our cars, the more likely they are to have serious problems. That's just simple physics. However, people still delay bringing their cars to the mechanic, and some even admit to putting them off for as long as six to 18 months.
32% of Americans also say they'll wait "as long as possible" to get their car serviced. 39% admit they don't even do regular check-ups – the only time they visit a mechanic is when something is broken or after an accident happens. But here's the truth: most people aren't doing it out of laziness or lack of attention. Almost half of Americans (48%) say they wait so long because frequent visits to the mechanic are just not financially feasible for them.
Why Do People Do This?
Is it really that inconvenient or uncomfortable to put your seat belt on? With all the careless and aggressive drivers we have nowadays why would you purposefully put yourself in danger like this?
Souvern citizen? Or "seat belts are pure communism" ?
Load More Replies...Sometimes I put my bag on the front seat and it sets off the alarm, so I have to do this. Edit: just realised this is the drivers seat haha. This is the passenger side in my country
If your bag is heavy, it is worth putting the seatbelt round it to secure it.
Load More Replies...The gub'ment can't tell ME whatta do, it's all a conspiracy by Big Seatbelt!
One of my cars has all the seatbelts permanently buckled (except the driver's since I use that one) because the "safety" system freaks out in certain weather and beeps at me whenever the car is in gear, thinking there are unbuckled passengers.
I would also like to know how the H you can drive while laying almost prone on your seat!
My brother has his seat almost laying down... he is so tall that he has to have it super reclined just to see out the windscreen/drive safely.... opposite of short people unable to see over the steering wheel

Passers-by stopped to help and all made same comment: "Lucky you were wearing your seat belt!" As shook up as I was, I still was able to respond, "Noooo, that's actually the point of having them." (Slight concussion, but no serious injury)

I would be petrified of even living next door to a tesla owner. Jc, so scary.
Lithium-ion batteries are dangerous because they can explode for various everyday reasons, like overcharging, direct sunlight coupled with high temperature, manufacturing defects, etc. Want to hazard (pun intended) a guess what kind of battery is used in Tesla cars?
Load More Replies...If you've taken your car to the mechanic lately and thought that the bill was kind of high, you're not alone. Experts report that car repair costs have risen by 4.1% each year between 2013 and 2023. Still, they're having trouble explaining why exactly they're so expensive at the moment. One possible reason could be that the cost of collision insurance claims is rising.
Others speculate that cars are becoming more expensive to repair. The cars we're driving today are heavier (by 33% exactly, since 1985) and about twice as powerful than they were 40 years ago. There are also many other improvements: turbochargers attached to engines, all-wheel drive systems, and the cars are almost "a rolling network of computers," according to one repair shop owner.

Got A New Alignment Tech
Sadly, this is a good example of most alignment shops. A specialist I knew years ago told me how to find a good one. Ask them if they align a '96 Explorer to factory specs. If they say yes, leave. Factory specs will wear the tires prematurely. If they know that you don't, then you've found someone who knows their stuff.
If you got into a car accident 10 years ago, your car would no doubt need some repairs. But today, experts claim, there are a dozen other tweaks that would need to be replaced. "You can have the same kind of accident that you would have 10 years ago, but now you have three additional sensors that are on the part of the vehicle that was impacted that you now have to potentially replace," the director of performance consulting at Mitchell Ryan Mandell told CNBC.

That's a weird way of putting it, but I kind of get where's he's coming from. The horn on my car sounds like a little kid's toy. The sound probably only carries a couple of feet. Most people don't even realize that I beeped at them.

I've noticed that "cheap" cars seem to come with a monotone horn, rather than the typical duotone horn (~330Hz & ~440Hz) which makes them sound a bit like toys.

I'm desperately trying to figure out how this happened. Two things get me. The missing hood and the front tires are bald AF. That screams carmeet. You know, those late night get togethers for men who are incredibly insecure. WTF was he doing that caused both front tires to demount?

If I won the lottery I would not tell people but there would be signs
Same here, but this wouldn’t be one of them. Expensive, fancy, sports cars or enormous pickup trucks don’t impress me at all. Never have, even when I was young and all the young guys used to try to impress girls with their souped up cars. I prefer more low key quality, so would not have a car like this if money was no object. Or a big fancy house. Or all the other trappings that newly wealthy people tend to put on show. Part of my mother’s family is Philadelphia Main Line old money, but aside from the big family manse, you’d never know it to look at them. That’s the way of old money. They do not flaunt, they’re low key, they go for understated elegance, and the best of them can be very down to earth and kind. They also are very generous when it comes to charitable donations, but generally give anonymously, because they don’t advertise their wealth. They also buy the best quality of everything. It’s not at all flashy but whatever they buy is very long-lasting (clothing made very well from the best fabrics, furniture made of solid wood and the best upholstery fabrics, quality jewelry, a home that is in a solidly good neighborhood so will not depreciate, a quality car that isn’t flashy and will last them decades because they are able to pay for the best upkeep for it, you name it). That is what I would try to emulate if I ever, somehow, attained wealth.

A true car repairman would tell you to never do repairs on your car on your own. Even minor ones. However, many Americans are trying to save money by doing things like oil changes, light maintenance, replacing interior parts, changing tires, or doing break maintenance themselves. At the same time, there are things many car owners just don't feel comfortable doing themselves. Perhaps that's why 64% of drivers are currently putting off some sort of vehicle maintenance.
Loaner Truck Came Back Like This
I worked for Goodyear in the 80's and they had a list of things you were not allowed to say and the #1 thing was "SHOT" well we had the regional and district mangers come in to the shop and overhead me telling a customer his taillight was SHOT, boy did I catch hell, after 15 minutes of them yelling at me (in front of the customer) they asked why I didn't have much to say. I reached into the busted up taillight and pulled out a 12 gauge deer slug and handed it to them saying the customer's son had pissed off some girl's dad and daddy then shot the taillight as the boy was speeding away, the customer and me just laughed and left management standing with dumb look on their faces
I don't understand why you wouldn't be allowed to say shot .?

I like a manual because it forces me to concentrate on driving--and nothing else. Manuals can be a pain in stop-and-go traffic, but even then, you're in control. I have an old car with a stick. It's been fitted with some of the new stuff (disc brakes, fuel injection), but no distracting doodads. No screens. Just a radio and a CD player. Well This Is My Favorite Customer States Of All Time
Sounds like a Nissan Sentra my dad picked up cheap. The car was less than 1 year old. Nissan gave the girl a new car when it was less than 4 months old. It stopped running one day and they could never get it to run again. It had changed hands 6 times before my dad got it. Had 1500 miles on the odometer. It had spark, good fuel pressure, was in time and had good compression so he figured it had to be a computer or injection problem so he changed it over to a carb. Nope, still wouldn't hit a lick. I sold it a few years later for a parts car after he passed away.
I once had a car towed into my shop with pcm hanging out ftom under the dash on the in front of the passenger seat, the customer then told me that her "regulat mechanic, the guy that runs the tco bell drive-through told her..." Well funny thing he was not far off, he just didn't have the scanner needed to confirm... turned out he once was a shop owner that had his brother cheat him out of his business and he went into the restraunt business...
A Fancy Key
We had these thing called "keys". They were so small, they fit into pockets.
At that price, you should be able to flip that thing open and say "Kirk to Enterprise"!
$700, you have to recharge it every couple weeks, and the only extra added functionality is that it shows you the status of the car locks and can adjust the seat remotely. Great value... No wonder it lasted only about a couple years before BMW phased it out and stopped using it on current models a couple years ago. But, BMW being BMW, they moved to a smartphone-controlled system... they never learn.
My Mazda has the same sort of app, and after a year it's $10 a month. It's the only way to use the remote start function. It's garbage, and is the only thing I don't like about that car.
Load More Replies...I have this key on my car (I bought the car used). It’s so annoying. You have to charge it every month, it doesn’t actually tell you anything useful, it’s laggy as fùck, there’s no where for the emergency key so you have to have a case to keep the two together and if it goes flat the only way to bring it back to life is to charge it with micro usb. Oh as it was originally a £1200 option
We have a big honking fob. Learned it had a key inside of it. Gimme a key outside of it and make the fob smaller!
Is aftermarket coil on systems that come with something similar that have been around for leak over 10 years
My car had the clicker made to the key. I went to the local locksmith and had them cut standard keys which still contain the security chip but are much smaller. I have all of our cars programmed to operate off the same clicker which I carry on a separate key ring. Before chipped keys, I'd have one side of the key cut for one car and the other side for another, thereby reducing the number of keys required by half.

When I suggested he put the bottle jack on TOP of the block, so thw ram is lifting on the frame, he told me that was unsafe, because the block couldn't handle thw weight of the jack AND the car. I walked away. There obviously wasn't any way I could explain where he would understand....anything.

You've got to use either one big block or a bunch of study blocks screwed together or make like a Jenga tower type one
Ev Fire On The Lift While Dealer Was Closed
Water + lithium = more fire. A fact even most firefighters don't know. In this case, beyond getting lucky, the sprinklers at least kept everything else form being consumed. The lesson seen here and with all EV fires? Never park an EV indoors or next to anything you don't want burned up. EV's are ticking time bomb.
Load More Replies...We had a fire at one of the motorcycle dealerships in our group, most likely a battery fault that was being worked on, it took out the workshop AND the illegal gas storage in the building next door, that went on to take out the car dealership next to that. I never heard the insurance figure but three buildings, 20+ cars and 50+ motorcycles got bbq that night 😳
If a garage will be working on EV's ... perhaps a Halon system. Lithium and water react, producing hydrogen. Adding hydrogen to an open fire gets exciting real fast.
It has been a while since I had to deal with halon, but my understanding was that in the US halon is up there with asbestos, not completely shutdown but very difficult to get.

I did stte inspections in Texas for 30 years, not sure when it started but suddenly folks came in with state issued tint exemptions that allowed them to have drker tints... but some of these really made me wonder, like the guy who could have "limo tint" on all windows due to his vision being extremely light sensitive, he was n commercial airline pilot... ge a pilot with overly light sensitive eyes...

I work at a dealership -- sometimes the porters are called on to do test drives to see if they can replicate the issue a customer described before the technicians pop it up on a rack. This guy probably started the test drive and got as far as he could before realizing there was something the customer didn't tell him (namely, they had no oil in the car).

i agree buying a kia was her first mistake i know i have one of the pos's
KIA in the USA is a budget brand, in the rest of the world is a mainstream or even slightly premium brand. That's why KIA in the USA has only their sh*ttier models and they come without many features common elsewhere (such as the lack of immobilizer made famous by the tiktok Kia Boys, or the drive assist that is standard on most EU models, or their whole PHEV line). KIA focus in the EU and Asia is in premium sedans (such as the Ceed), while in the US they sell mostly their crossover SUVs, and even those are redesigned -and worsened- to appeal the American taste.
It's a budget brand everywhere. People buy them because they come with a 7-year warranty.

Except when someone 5’ nothing owns the cat, and everyone who works at the shop is pushing 6’. Kinda hard to just move the car if your knees are up around your ears.
Load More Replies...I am the only driver and I like adjusting depending on trip... so it's a guessing game if they will fit on the first try.
Load More Replies...It's rude that they didn't use "please" or "thank you". I would do everything on the list to be rude back at them.

No respect for the guy or girl who is fixing your car, not everyone is the same size. The person has to maneuver it into the garage maybe onto a bridge for inspection And its not that your seat can adjust 1000 different positions. And if id would it definitely would have memory
Memory controls are 100% useless when replacing the battery. Car manufacturers never have any kind of simple battery back up for controls set by the user(s). At best, one user might remember to resave all settings once the battery is in, but that's only if they remembered to make the car think they're ready to go before disconnecting the battery.
Sorry, but I hate it when mechanics change these things too. I have to drive this every day. You just need to get it in and out of the shop. My settings are the way they are for a reason.
It takes two minutes to change it back, you can do this!

Getting Called A Scammer For Not Wanting To Patch This
How? This is a roofing "cap nail" for holding down underlayment, the shank is only like 3mm.
Load More Replies...How big is the actual puncture hole? I'd put a plug in that and roll on every day of the week.
The size of the head of that doesn't matter, it's the size of the whole. If you gave up without even looking at it, then you aren't very good at your job. Maybe it can't be plugged, but maybe it can.
I somehow picked up a quarter-inch bolt complete with washer and my favourite tire shop fixed it with no problem. I kept the bolt for a souvenir.
Load More Replies...Tread is already wearing unevenly on that inside side there. I'm going to err on the side of caution and get a new tire, use this maybe as a spare with a plug? And emergency spare.
Load More Replies...You can't say whether it can be patched until you pull it out. From looking at it it looks like the hole is less than 1/8 of an inch diameter, that can easily be plugged. People need to learn how to plug their own tires because it is a scam For a shop that sells tires to refuse to plug this and tell you that you need a new tire.
Trunk Of A Hyundai At That The Yard I Work At
Those look like catalytic convertors. Catalytic Convertors have platinum, palladium, and rhodium in them as part of the chemical process that reduces your vehicle emissions. Those are somewhat rare and very expensive metals. Someone has been stealing catalytic convertors off of cars.
If OP's yard is a scrapyard, it looks to me like someone has squirreled away the cats to retrieve later. I'd seen this done at Pull-a-thons, where a scrapyard lets the public pay an entrance fee and they can keep whatever they can carry out over the "finish line".
Load More Replies...They best not be nicked! In the UK you can no longer be paid in cash for scrap cats. I sold one off my car to a scrappy a while back and he had to pay me by bank transfer. Makes the transactions traceable.
Again for Americans, Nicked means Copped as in both arrested by and stollen (cop a feel)

It's been at the mechanic for a week now to find out why it stalled out, come to find out i need a new motor. Go figure i have $1500 and it's paid off. I open my doors and they have my car ripped apart and all over my d**n leather seats!!!! Oh man was i pissed lol. I get it's a 2017 Ford escape but I always keep my vehicles very clean. Just the audacity I guess smdh
Please tell me this is a scrap dealer and not a collection of bits that have fallen off the car

When your kid is old enough, buy them their first socket set, Before handing it to them remove the 10mm so they learn to feel the pain :P
Because yer granddaddy did the same thing in his day. When you need a 10mm, you gotta get it where you can.
Load More Replies...Would this have anything to do with the fact that the socket sizes 9mm, 11mm, 14mm and 15mm do not correspond to any standard metric nut size? 16mm is used for M10 threads but only for ISO nuts - DIN nuts use 17mm. 10mm nut size is for M6 - the commonest size on automotive applications I suspect.
What part of planet earth are you from!? I use 14mm and 15mm all the time in my Swedish and Japanese cars.
Load More Replies...And the sad commentary on my American self today is that I first thought those were ammo sizes, not tools. 🤦♀️ TBH, I know next to nothing about either. I have only handled a gun once, just long enough to retrieve it from the safe and hand it to the owner. I am also quite DIY/mechanical/engineering impaired, so I tend to outsource these things.
I’ve got a Furze 10mm spanner on my keys, it’ll never leave my side 😂
Ooooooo! Have you dug any secret tunnels with it yet?
Load More Replies...It is my opinion that all socket sets should come with 3 10mm sockets.
I can't remember which one, but on one tool manufactures website the sold 10 packs of 10mm sockets. Otherwise it was normal sets or individual sockets.
Plastic Control Arms. Never Thought I Would See The Day
A well designed plastic part can be much better than a badly designed steel part. I read this is on a Dodge Ram and the part is an upper control arm, that handles only a limited load and is paired with a steel reinforcement plate. The material used is frankly impressive in terms of plastics: 50FWF-PA6 (nylon with long strand fiberglass making up half the weight of the part), the datasheet is a monster https://download.basf.com/p1/8a8081c57fd4b609017fd636478c3e5e/en/ULTRAMID%253Csup%253E%25C2%25AE%253Csup%253E_B3WG10. The expected service life exceeds the steel one, that historically had corrosion problems due to the complex shape of the sheet metal part and the weldments, and it performs on par with the far more expensive cast aluminum option.
It's worth noting that a very similar material has been used to make mono-leaf rear springs for literally decades, and those things never break.
Load More Replies...Had me worried for a second there. "The image shows a composite upper control arm, specifically a design found in vehicles like the Ram 1500. While it may appear to be entirely plastic, these control arms are actually a composite material integrated with a steel structure for strength and durability. " ~ Google Lens
Fiberglass composite leaf springs have been in use since the early 1980s without being a problem.

This is fine... aluminium alloys and composites can be incredibly strong and durable while retaining lightness. The wheels on land speed record cars like Bloodhound are just aluminium discs with no tyres...I'm talking Aerospace grade aluminium and manufacturing. I wouldn't recommend a metal wheel on a road car 🤣
And they warp when heated to the degree that brakes operate at.
Load More Replies...There are a few technologies for aluminum rotors. Some of them (Aluminum Metal Matrix) outperform steel and composite. Some are less performing but still adequate while solving weight and corrosion issues (Keronite). Some are blended with ceramic making them harder and the aluminum helps with heat dissipation and are sometimes used in high performance supercars.
Dad ran an asphalt crew and had magnesium rakes. He brought a damaged rake home and set tiny bits of it on fire. White-hot! Also damaged a little bit of his asphalt driveway, but he knew how to fix it. Just wanted to see magnesium burn. Don't put water on a magnesium fire!!! (He didn't - just warned me not to do it.) Use a properly marked Class D extinguisher, or dry extinguishing powder to cut off oxygen. Scary!

Stupid console designs seem to be endless these days. I remember one where you have to push down on the catch t release the lid. Okay except the release is made to the lid instead of the housing, So it requires 2 hands to open the console. One to push the release while the other pulls up on the side on the lid. And no, it want' an issue of a broken spring to force the lid up when released. It was just a s***ty design.
When it comes to automotive design, there's not one company anywhere in the world where the designers have ever once consulted with mechanics on what to NEVER do when designing a car. Most designers clearly have never worked on a car. This is especially true for all those super expensive hand built cars that are nearly impossible to do even an oil change on without literally taking 1/2 the car apart.
