“Truth is stranger than fiction” is one of those sayings that seems pretty weird until you’ve lived long enough to see some examples in the flesh. If you are familiar with “the Onion,” you’ll know that there is already a lot of good satire out there. But what about times when real events were just more unhinged?

This Instagram account shares hilarious examples of headlines that are so bizarre that they almost look like something out of “the Onion.” So get comfortable as you scroll through, prepare to do a few double takes, upvote your favorites and add your own thoughts below.

As a German, the videos of the speeches of Trump and his club are awfully familiar. We saw them at school, in history lessons covering the 1930s, and every around this time of the year there are tons of documentaries on TV. The likenesses to the speech and actions are hauntig. Other Europeans realize it a bit less, but do recognize the similarities. Unfortunately the vast majority of the US citizens and other people living there have no clue. Putin, as multi-lingual highly trained spy, with work experience in other countries, does see see it, too, and knows exactly which buttons to push.

A lot of us see it. And a lot of us are at a loss as to what to do about it. Many people are fighting, but not enough. And so many things are happening so fast that it is hard not to feel helpless. I am not saying that as an excuse; i think I am saying that as a request for guidance

On Monday, DOGE put the entire Institute of Library and Museum Services on leave. This is going to wreck various libraries and museums around the country, many of which rely on funding via the ILMS. Along with cuts to education, veterans affairs... it's almost as if they're trying to destroy the country....

If you happen to be unaware, the Onion is an American satirical digital media company and newspaper organization that publishes “articles” on international, national, and local news. The company is currently based in Chicago, but originated as a weekly print publication on August 29, 1988, in Madison, Wisconsin.

The Onion began publishing online in early 1996, which is what it is best known for. You can actually still find physical print copies of the Onion out there. In 2007, they began publishing satirical news audio and video online as the Onion News Network. The print edition ceased in 2013, coinciding with the establishment of Onion Labs, an advertising agency.

"A professor at Boise State University, Yenor has written extensively on what he sees as the dangers of diversity, equity and inclusion efforts in higher education as well as the declines of traditional marriage and birth rates in the U.S. He's also a former fellow at The Heritage Foundation, which proposed Project 2025 as a policy blueprint for a hard-right turn in American government and society." Speaking at the National Conservatism Conference in 2021, Yenor detailed what he sees as the “evils” of feminism, labeled “independent women” as “medicated, meddlesome and quarrelsome” and decried colleges and universities as "the citadels of our gynecocracy” — a form of government run by women. https://www.nbcmiami.com/news/local/desantis-appointee-scott-yenor-says-women-should-become-mothers/3511328/. Despite its satirical nature, The Onion's articles are sometimes mistaken for real news, leading to confusion among people who didn’t look at the source of the “article.” This confusion often arises because the articles mimic the tone and format of traditional news outlets, making it challenging for some individuals to discern satire from reality.

The Onion's ability to craft headlines that closely resemble genuine news stories contributes to this phenomenon. In some instances, the satirical headlines have even prefigured real events, further blurring the line between satire and reality. After all, it’s hard to argue against the idea that some current events aren’t just as bizarre and absurd as something you’d see on the aforementioned page.

Great. The CO2 percentage in the atmosphere is miniscule. 0.004. If its reduced to 0.002 all life on earth will die because that is what plants need to survive and grow. We are cutting forests faster than growing them. We desperately need CO2. The entire propaganda for CO2 emissions is fake. Ask any meteorologist!!!

The Onion's realistic satirical style and its ability to closely mimic traditional news reporting can lead some readers to mistake its fictional articles for actual news, highlighting the importance of media literacy in distinguishing between satire and legitimate journalism. While it wasn’t exactly the page’s intention, it’s probably a good lesson for readers in 2025 to pay attention to sources and not just be tricked by tone.

As a man, I reckon it's because a lot of men are scared of women, they know that many women are stronger and more intelligent than the men would like and they feel threatened. They know that women have to exist for the human race to continue, so they treat them like breeding stock. A lot of scared little boys in the school playground ganging up to bully anything they don't understand.

Implantation takes place between 6 and 12 days after conception. At 1 week you are not pregnant at all and on the unlikely chance that you are, you would NOT be aware of it, nor would you test positive on a pregnancy test. That is because there are not enough pregnancy hormones to support growth of a fetus. There are no hormones because it is not yet a fetus. It is a bunch of cells that are starting to multiply. If those cells do not implant on the uterus wall all you are going to be burying is blood and cells. And then, we bleed for 3-7 days. Are we supposed to hold a burial for every tampon and menstrual pad we use over those days? Because no one can know at what point those cells come out.

So, for all wondering how's that possible, I read the reports & here is the TL;DR for you: Alyssa was born in Puerto Rico and her first language was Spanish, she went to school already living in the USA (moved when 5yo). From the start she exhibited symptoms of learning disability that were ignored by school. Mother does not speak English and was often mislead by school officials as to what's done for her daughter. It was only in second/sophomore year of highschool that she finally received a "education teacher & case manager" to address her learning difficulty, but that person was reportedly bullying and harassing Alyssa in front of others and consequently was dismissed. In 11th grade Alyssa starts to advocate for herself and towards the end of highschool finally receives proper testing for learning disability. Until now she survived by help of peers and text-to-speech apps, because her own skills of reading and writing halted at first grade level. She's suing basically for neglect.

In 2000, while living in Austin, TX, I met many, many "college" students that were just f*****g dumb. They couldn't spell and their handwriting was that of kindergartners, no exaggeration. I'll never forget this note a wealthy college gal left for me stating not to park in a certain area so my truck "won't get toed". She never attended classes, drove a $30,000- SUV and lived in a condo bought and paid for by the parents. Currently in San Marcos, it is a very common and well-known fact at how completely incompetent and stupid the college kids are here. They run the town and it shows in the poorly operated businesses. It's all over people. We don't have a prayer.

Fox Entertainment's Jesse Watters sends message to Zelensky: “We run the world. This is America's world. He's our proxy. This world — this ends when we say it ends. It doesn't end when Zelensky — if he wants to go it alone, go it alone. I'm glad we helped him. Russia invaded, we got his back. At first it was the right thing to do. But now it's not. Now the war's over and he doesn't recognize it's over, and reality's going to eat this guy alive if he doesn't recognize this.” --- ****** This is the kind of sh!t maga is listening to. Let's see who is targeted next in some way, shape, or form by the government for trying to give some people the same chances that others were born with by sheer luck. So many people think that by levelling the playing field they are taking away others' "rights" to continue allowing privilege to continue.

It's sad that we think of progress as win lose. If someone who has been marginalized has access to the same opportunity as you, and beats you to that opportunity because they are more qualified....Instead of taking it as a lesson, you cannot admit or address your own shortcomings, so like a petulant child you insist the rules of the game be changed into something you think favors you.

It isn't a HIPAA violation to report suspected child abuse, which d**g abuse during pregnancy. The problem is that medical staff, often social workers, just see the d**g test result from the newborn and have no way of knowing that the d**g was prescribed to the mother during the birth.

Tell the whole story, please. This only applies to some of the later devices which have sufficient processing power to do local voice processing. On early devices all recordings go to the cloud anyway. A recording is just what is captured after it is triggered by the wakeword. You can actually use the app to review your own recordings. It is incredibly dull - though mine probably wouldn't get through BP's swearofiilter!

“'Sorry your loved one died, best we can do is a hot meal' was the holiday greeting Impact Plastics’ management chose to send last month to the families of the workers who perished in the catastrophic flooding at their plant during Hurricane Helene in September. Instead of accepting responsibility for their role in the tragedy, the Erwin, Tennessee, company sent $100 gift cards to the grieving families in December. This callous act is a stark illustration of the capitalist class’s utter disregard for the lives, and deaths, of the working class. The families of the deceased, along with surviving employees, received gift cards to McDonald’s, Walmart and Pal’s, another fast-food restaurant in the area."

For anyone wondering, it is phosphogypsum, a byproduct of mining / producing phosphate fertilizer. It's not highly radioactive but it's also not NOT radioactive. As the radium 226 decays, it emits radon. They have about 20 billion tons of it to try to figure out what to do with. The article below says the road material idea was also considered back in the 80s. Bottom line seems to be not enough info for EPA to be sure it is/isn't safe enough to use in construction. https://www.npr.org/2023/07/17/1188181247/floridas-idea-to-use-radioactive-waste-in-road-construction-is-unsafe-critics-sa

It might sound crazy, but using this stuff for roads might be a better idea than it first seems. Radon is produced by lots of naturally occurring minerals. If you spread a source of radon out in the open, the gas will dilute to trivial levels and probably not cause any health problems. If you try to keep all the stuff in the one place, then you can have problems. Old granite houses in the UK sometimes have dangerous levels of radon due to modern double glazing, modern doors, and boarded up fireplaces: once you get rid of the drafts, you can get trouble. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Radon#Domestic-level_exposure

It's good that the murder got solved, but the issue is: how did the police got hold of the DNA sample? If the company sold/gave it to the police, what stops them from giving YOUR DNA information to your health insurer? What stops the police from abusing the access to your DNA? Oh, they are all such upstanding citizens, right? They'd never do that. Just like they'd never beat up black men, k**l sleeping black women, r**e children...

To be clear, bird flu is not and has never been the issue. Does nobody remember 2022? Midst of COVID, bird flu rampant, farmers complaining they would be out of business. Then come end of year what happened? Egg farmers by and large ALL reported record-level profits for the year. For every year they b***h about a bird flu, I will not buy a single egg in that year. F those guys. They just took a page from Big Oil's playbook ("oh we don't have enough oil, we need to charge $4 a gallon!")

Dear President Trump, After careful consideration in regards to your request for the Kingdom of Denmark 🇩🇰, to increase our export of eggs, to the United States of America 🇺🇸, to assist you with your campaign promises, to lower the cost of groceries, specifically eggs. And, also taking into account your increasing interestingly opinionated reasons for demanding that we cede (just give you) the territory of Greenland 🇬🇱. We have come to the decision that you should; "Du skulle bare gå og sutte en masse æg. Du oppustet orange spild af menneskelig plads." Depends on how the fertiliser is composted. Looks like it grew harmful fungal spores rather than nice healthy bacteria.

Was it histoplasmosis. It is very dangerous. My husband got sick from mowing a lawn in the Ohio river bassin and this fungus attacked his body and he lost an eye from it and it was devistating to him for he was an artist.

I looked into this, wanted to see the words coming from her mouth and hear if there was a gasp from the press. Sadly, this rumor is not true. Someone started it as a meme. But, the fact that it was believed by so many people just points to the fact that there have been so many BS statements coming from her that this one doesn't seem out of the ordinary.

The articles I can find are somewhat limited on details but it appears to not be as "obvious" as this post makes it seem. The house was a rental, not her primary residence. The 'squatter' was ruled by a judge to not be a squatter. The owner allegedly made "terroristic threats". She deserves to get her house back but it does sound like there are two sides to the story. https://www.newsnationnow.com/us-news/southeast/georgia-homeowner-arrested-alleged-squatter/

If someone has mail being delivered to the address and has resided at that address for 30 days (or more) they're not considered squatters. So basically, in some jurisdictions, if you cover the rent for ONE 31 day month....that's all you need to do to secure 12-18 months cost free accomodations before the courts manage to kick you out. Squatters have been pulling this c**p with traditional rentals, vacation properties that sit unused for months at a time, HOMES THAT ARE CURRENTLY FOR SALE, for YEARS at this point. There's not two sides, people who engage in this kind of behavior do not have "a side" they're thieves and it's a travesty that Castle doctrine doesn't apply to these situations.

I read it on my own and discovered why it has to be assigned reading in school. If it wasn't no one would read it at all. It is not an enjoyable read at all and since I am no longer in school, I limit my reading to books that entertain and that bring me joy rather than tedious tomes with supposedly deep meanings that must be deciphered by school children. No need to ban it as most will forget it once they leave school.

"Kansas Department for Children and Families Secretary Laura Howard said NPR did a series of investigative stories several years ago about foster care children losing their benefits. States claim the money as reimbursement for the costs of foster care. But governments already have an obligation to pay the costs of foster care under state and federal laws. The result is that only impoverished kids, who receive Social Security benefits because they’re orphans or because they’re disabled or their parents are disabled, get a bill for their own foster care.” Since NPR’s investigation, some states passed legislation to stop the practice, but 36 states still reimburse themselves with the children’s federal benefits. Kansas is the first state to use an executive order to change the practice."

I didn’t know about this practice until a family member showed me an itemized like bill showing why the funds were taken out of their check. All the charges were crazy! My mind was blown that the government was charging minors for their own care so when they hit 18 they immediately have a bill of debt. It’s insane! It’s not just foster care either. If you fall on hard times and need to use state/fed resources like that, when your trying to get back on your feet, any check you may get from the government in the future they can use to reimburse themselves for whatever they feel they out when they originally helped you. The state went after my sisters ex for back child support because she needed food stamps. That gave them the right to go after him for $, when they finally found him, tested dna and got confirmation, one kid got like less than 100$ and the other got nothing but an itemized list of charges from the state.

Here's one. Pediatrician refused to test my Grandson after he was exposed to Strep A, while his immune system was fighting asymptomatic Covid. Daughter took him to an Urgent Care (One step below emergency room, but covered at office call rates) where he WAS tested and sent home with an antibiotic. Long story short he just got home from U of M children's hospital after transfer due to him d**n near dying(Sepsis). That pediatrician is VERY interested in his health NOW. My assumption is BC/BS would not cover the Strep test in those under 3yrs ...A******S!

Burying the led a bit. Minimum wage here in VA was at the federal minimum of $7.25 just 5 years ago, but has been increased every year since. As of January 1st this year, our minimum wage is $12.41 an hour. Our legislatiors attempted to have it increase incrementally to $15 by 2027, but governor Glenn Youngkin vetoed it.

I looked into this one - it was actually more about data protection and privacy, the headline deliberately provocative but not representative of the article at all.
