It’s easy to feel like you're drowning in a sea of bad news, a constant tide of division and crisis that pulls you under. It can feel like the whole story, the only story. One day, it's fires, the next day, racial divides, all topped off with the constant threat of war, whether civil or abroad...

But just beyond the noise, there are thousands of smaller, quieter currents of progress and decency pushing things in the right direction. They don't always make the headlines, but they are just as real. An online community asked a powerful, refreshing question: What's something positive going on in America people should be aware of?

I was the same. I think it is more important for parents to talk to their children about the books they are reading and make sure they know if there are any questions about the subject matter they can come to them for an honest open discussion. It's not up to libraries to decide who can read what. I was reading books from the adult section when I was 13 and my parents were great about it as they were both big readers too. I could talk to them about anything, though more often than not it was about the cool facts and myths I found out about than the topics of novels.

@Arthur does not deserve these negative votes and he is perfectly right to say that all books are not suitable for all ages just as films, manga, anime or comics are not suitable for all ages. This has nothing to do with censorship.

Once you start saying "you are below the age that my opinion judges is necessary to read this book" - this is censorship. Kids read, think, express themselves at different age-abilities, not like a block of dummies marching in lockstep. Let the kids find books that enthrall them, challenge them, make them wonder, make them think ... or admit that your hidden agenda is to prevent independence of mind and personality. Get your tanks off the lawn of literature.

If you feel like the world is constantly on fire, you're not alone, and it's taking a toll. According to the American Psychological Association, the sheer volume of negative news we consume through media and social media is a significant source of stress and anxiety.

Our brains simply aren't designed to process this much global trauma at once, leading to a state of "media overload" that can make us feel helpless and cynical. This is why actively seeking out positive stories is a very necessary act of mental self-preservation, a way to recalibrate our perspective and remember that progress and kindness are still happening all around us.

Are you sure? It's not easy to distinguish a jaguar from a leopard. The jaguar has white on its face (a bit like a tiger) and a rounded face. Its spots are also different: the jaguar's rosettes are larger, and inside these rosettes, there's a central black spot. At least, that's what the link below I found seems to indicate.

In a time of deep social and political division, one of the most innovative and hopeful projects is the Human Library. It’s a library, but instead of checking out books, you can "check out" a person for a one-on-one, 30-minute conversation. The "books" are volunteers from all walks of life, often from marginalized or misunderstood groups.

The goal is simple but profound: to create a safe space for conversation, challenge stereotypes, and foster empathy through direct human connection. It's a quiet but powerful movement that reminds us that the best way to break down prejudice is to simply sit down and talk to someone.

Hand holding a small transparent snake-shaped object with green details symbolizing progress and hope in America. In the city of Tacoma, in washingston state, residents gather together every Chinese New Year to hunt for MonkeyShines: glass baubles and ornaments emblazoned with that years Zodiac, made by local glass artists, while also leaving "rogue" monkeyshines for others to find. They all follow the rule of "only take one" and you can rehide other shines you find.

The entire city turns into a collective scavenger hunt for roughly a month and it's common to see packs of humans hunting in the rain and snow, even at night with flashlights.

In this small corner of the world, tucked into the armpit of the PNW, someone decided one day that they would make the city brighter by hiding little tokens for others to find. And now it's officially A Thing, with it's own subreddit and websites and whatnot.

There's still magic worth seeking out, no matter how grim the outlook may be.

Last year began with news out of California that was dominated by images of devastating wildfires and headlines about a historic, unrelenting drought. But in a dramatic and welcome turnaround, the script has flipped.

Thanks to a series of powerful atmospheric rivers, the state's reservoirs have been replenished, and as of late 2025, the U.S. Drought Monitor shows that the vast majority of the state is completely drought-free. While the long-term challenges of climate change remain, this is a powerful story of environmental tenacity and a much-needed piece of good news for a region that has been hit hard for so long.

That picture is one prototype from around 6 years ago, can't find any reference to the "1200 distributed". That one claimed to produce 50W, but that's a peak figure in full sunlight, modern ones you can buy today have dropped that claim to a more realistic 8w, using a much lighter and flexible panel built-in to the backpack. Edit: Search Sunslice Solar backpack 8W "Zenith" for more info.

For example I understand why the new Star Wars trilogy doesn't have to be everyone's cup of tea, but to this day, I remember this little girl, utterly ecstatic, running to her mom with some Star Wars book like "Mom, MOM! At one point Electro learns that Peter is a white kid and he says something along the lines of "Kid from New York? Figured you'd be black" to which this kid near the front row, who was, like, no more than 10, yells "THERE IS A BLACK SPIDER-MAN", referring to Miles Morales. Gives me goosebumps remembering it. Stories are powerful. Representation is important.

I am a 48 year old type 1 diabetic. I would absolutely squeal at seeing a diabetic Barbie! Go Target!

The crushing cost of life-saving medication has been a source of national frustration for decades, but there is a groundbreaking development that is providing tangible relief. The state of California is set to begin selling its own affordable, state-branded insulin.

This move is a game-changer, poised to slash the price of a medicine that millions of people with diabetes depend on for their survival. It is one of the most significant and direct actions taken to combat pharmaceutical price gouging, and it offers a workable model for how to make essential healthcare more accessible for everyone.

Reminds me of a tradition from pre-invasion Middle America where elders would gather in a garden at the center of the cities and spend their "retirement" as sources of information. People could come and sit with them and ask questions.

This started in Denmark something like 20 years ago. I have been a book here in Greece, and I can tell you that for me...it was like having a year of therapy in one weekend. Very healing. We had one volunteer "protector" for every two books, and they'd come find us in the break room provided, ask us if we were (emotionally) ready for the next reader/s, and watch over us during the sessions. I've only had one "bad" reader in the two weekends I've done this, and to be honest it was sort of a joy to vent at him and destroy his unearned confidence. :)

A lone yellow tree stands out amid a dense green forest symbolizing progress and hope in America. The American chestnut tree is beginning a comeback tour after two extensive projects to make strains that are resistant to the fungus that swept the legs out from under the species after it was imported along with Chinese chestnuts.

(Edit- there was an issue with one of the lines and it suffered a setback in 2023/4 but it is still moving forward per SUNY-ESF).

This is great! But the new hybrids lost all their height. The thing that made the American chestnut so amazing was how tall and mighty the trees were. Now it looks more like a fruit tree. BUT!!!! They found an original American chestnut tree growing in some deep woods! It survived all this time!!!! Perhaps it's naturally resistant?

Yes! We're in the process of replacing all grass with clover in the sun and moss in the shade. We foster milkweed and have Monarchs every summer. We also leave piles of leaf litter in the darkest areas, and have thousands of fireflies every summer. We only buy seeds and cuttings from local places that offer native plants. This is the way.

The good news is, these stories are not isolated incidents. They are part of a larger, more hopeful narrative that is quietly happening all around us, every single day. Progress is often slow, and kindness is often quiet, so they don't always generate the loudest headlines.

But from community projects and environmental recovery to major policy wins, the threads of positive change are always there. We must just remember that the story of our time is not just one of crisis, but also one of strength, innovation, and an enduring commitment to making things better.

To me it feels like this is not the case. That in the last 10 years, people had been getting more relaxed and more natural looking, but in the last 1 or 2 years it's been reversing again: many celebrities are using Ozempic to be very thin and all their faces are starting to look identical because of cosmetic surgery, many women are putting a lot of time and makeup into their eyebrows, young kids (kids, not teens) are using lots of cosmetic products because influencers tell them they need special products otherwise their skin will look ugly.

This is huge. Considering most daycare won't accept an infant until they're 12 weeks old, but by then a) FMLA is used up and b) a preemie may not be ready for daycare by 12 weeks after birth. In addition FMLA is only 12 weeks per year so if you've used all your leave immediately, but then employee or family member has an emergency that year, you have zero leave left and may get fired.

Woman with code and data projections illustrating uplifting stories of progress and hope in America beyond negative headlines. The California Privacy DROP Act just went active. Data Brokers, companies that sell your personal data (name, address, phone number, email), have to delete info on people that submit a request not directly them but to the CalPrivacy site.
Sites like deleteme, Incogni and others that offer this as a subscription aren’t needed (they would send requests on your behalf as part of CCPA or Vanita’s USDP framework). Usually when California does something other progressive states follow.
If you are Californian and want to reduce the amount of spam calls and junk mail you can use the site here: https://privacy.ca.gov/drop/about-drop-and-the-delete-act/

Added later: The act starts today but brokers have until August to implement the capability and up to 6 months to do the deletion (iirc). It’s not timely but it makes sense it will take awhile since it is onerous to setup if not automated.

This is challenging in small rural towns as the low income levels means the city lacks much of a tax base and cannot afford needed repairs and upgrades to the public infrastructure. And Trump's regime has canceled many FEMA funds that would have rebuilt much of the western towns of North Carolina after the hurricane.

Close-up of a first aid defibrillator sign symbolizing hope and progress in America beyond negative headlines. Health insurance is broken but there’s a lot of amazing stuff happening in medicine.

Specifically, bispecific antibody treatment is emerging as a more effective and much safer alternative to chemotherapy for some types of cancer. Right now it’s mainly used for blood cancers.

The treatment forces your own immune system to fight off the cancer. Almost no serious side effects. Over the next 5-10 years it’s going to become standard treatment for many cancers.

I had the same thing in 2014 and surgery wasn't to be thought of. Instead, coiling and putting in a stent was my treatment and I don't think there was any question of my surviving. Man holding notebook with start up text in modern office, representing uplifting stories of progress and hope in America. People are starting businesses at record rates since the pandemic in response to the economic challenges of the time.

In other words, rather than let the challenging job market defeat them, many of us are hiring ourselves and doing much better today than if we had given up and accepted the offers that were available.

Today, people like me remember what that was like, so we offer more to the people we hire as our businesses grow, offering more to our community than the bare minimum.

Choose local businesses that pay workers well and put money back into your community. That's the way we make thinks better.

I would upvote this to eternity. This is exactly what I did. I didnt want to work under somone else's rules anymore, so I learned as much as I could about an industry in a year, and then created my own version of a business that would work in my hometown. I'm a call/text courier service, and its better than any online App, because none of the mom-pop local restaurants and businesses want to pay and maintain several Apps for delivery. Basically any location or business can be a pick-up or drop-off. And we don't just feed lazy people who dont wanna leave their house, we serve our community by transporting vital medicines, paperwork, groceries, pets, and auto parts. Plus we join in all the local holidays like Truck-Or-Treat, 4th of July parade, easter egg hunts, or other events that support or business partners and make our community healthier and happier

I work at a non profit, and although the current political and economic landscape is hard on us, we're still doing good work. Kids are learning real world skills that translate to careers. Poor kids are still joining our summer camps along with the rich kids. Old boats are getting new lives and providing enriching experiences to little kids and silver hairs and everyone in between.

Psa: if you can afford to give, whatever cause is important to you, please do so. One of the very first things that people cut back on during leaner times is charitable giving (I get it, I do too).

ICE are criminals and will be prosecuted. Again, demonstrable evidence.

There are two thoughts on crime dropping in the US - either crime was caused by lead everywhere or by unwanted babies forced to be born and who grew up to be criminals. Lead has more or less been dealt with and abortion was made legal - for a while and so the crime rate is going down. But with abortion now being considered all but illegal again, it will be interesting to see if we get a rise in crime again in the next 15 years. If we do, we know the lack of abortion rights is the cause. If not, we'll know it was lead.

Crime rates have dropped dramatically in the US since the 1990s. Here is an excellent summary: https://www.pewresearch.org/short-reads/2024/04/24/what-the-data-says-about-crime-in-the-us/

Crime statistics have been dropping for years. Check with credible sources. By the way, "red" states' wishful thinking and "alternative facts" are not credible sources. It's weird the way certain people think that saying something easily refutable somehow magically makes it real. Very toddler behaviour.

Two people sharing a hopeful moment over coffee, representing uplifting stories of progress and hope in America. It may not be of their own choosing (I hear it’s because they can’t afford it), but younger people are apparently drinking less these days!

Or, the state-level legalization of a certain other intoxicant. I know people in New York State that no longer drink, but boy do they do that, now.

Good; alcohol is a poison, and just because it has been a human tradition to poison ourselves with it for thousands of years doesn't mean it should continue forever

I got hired to work at the Super Bowl halftime show. So that will be 2 weeks of me not being bored, freezing, and miserable and I get to go to California for the first time. So that’s a positive development in my American life, I suppose.

On an individual level, Americans (& people as a whole) are still kind & friendly as anywhere else and I genuinely believe that most would do something nice if given the opportunity.

I believe that even has only increased as s**t has hit the fan.

The squeaky wheel gets the grease. Most Americans hate what is happening. You just only hear the loudest people. Thats why PEOPLE NEED TO SPEAK UP!

Person painting with watercolors in a sketchbook, creating hopeful and uplifting artwork symbolizing progress in America. There is tons of content online on how to every hobbie imaginable. There are programs where you can volunteer at foster homes and animal shelters. You can tweek your content to just funny cats and plan the perfect vacation anywhere in the world.

You can completely opt out of the negative content and doom scrolling with a few content resets. .

While everyone should take a break from time to time, looking away has never solved a problem. Looking away from your Latin American neighbours being harassed by ICE has now led to members of all ethnic groups getting ra.ped and kil.led.

These words from Pastor Martin Niemöller need to be resurrected and reprinted more often, especially today: "First they came for the Communists and I did not speak out because I was not a Communist. Then they came for the Socialists and I did not speak out because I was not a Socialist. Then they came for the trade unionists and I did not speak out because I was not a trade unionist. Then they came for the Jews and I did not speak out because I was not a Jew. Then they came for me and there was no one left to speak out for me."
