Even if you have a wealth of information, it can be of little to no use when it’s presented in a complex way. Spreadsheets with what seem to be never-ending numbers and formulas are often overwhelming and off-putting, which lowers the chances of anyone engaging or delving deeper into them. But if we dress up data in clever and beautiful charts, they instantly become inviting and impossible to ignore.

It’s a true art form to display information in a way that is clear and understandable, so we’re celebrating it by sharing charts that are both fascinating and stunning in hopes that they encourage you, our dear Pandas, to learn something new today. Scroll down to see them for yourself, and don’t forget to upvote the ones you found the most interesting!

Visualizing information, that is, turning it into charts, graphs, maps, etc., is an important skill to have for anyone nowadays, as it can be used in many contexts and fields.

“Knowing how to develop and deliver a data-driven presentation is now a crucial skill for many professionals, since we often have to tell our colleagues stories that are much more compelling when they’re backed by numbers,” agrees researcher and consultant Alexandra Samuel.

Almost any professional can make use of visual aids to understand data better themselves or make it more accessible to the general public or audience that doesn’t have the technical knowledge required to process it.

I f*****g hate how deeply ingrained the greed is in the system (U.S.). The fact that it's not super uncommon for people to have to sell their homes to pay medical bills disgusts me to no end. Our healthcare system isn't just expensive. It's predatory.

When my wife developed cancer--and then a second cancer on the day she rang the bell (ending chemo) for the first one--we started down a journey that did just what you said. WITH EXCELLENT HEALTH INSURANCE, we ended up paying out of pocket more than $383,000 in direct medical costs and premiums. She beat both cancers, and is still my best friend after 48 years of marriage (yesterday). We lost everything--home, savings, even sold our car to cover the costs, and we will still be in debt when we die. Imagine if we didn't have those resources to sell? (Many, many, don't.) The problem is--and always will be greed.

Yes, Medicare is for those over 65, most of whom worked the majority of their lives. I just started receiving it after working as a Pharmacy Tech for 50 years. Do I wish there was universal health care in the US? Yes, for those who work, and those who want to but can’t because of medical reasons. We have Medicaid, paid for mostly by taxpayers who work, for those who (mostly) don’t want to work.

In Australia it is becoming more and more common to use solar and one of the reasons is the increase of electricity costs from running aircons. I am hoping to get a grant to install solar soon. It's frustrating that storage batteries for solar still massively increase the cost and aren't usually included in grants though.

The first tip they give is to make sure that your data can be seen. Sometimes what is readable on your laptop might not translate the same way when projected on a screen. Your audience won’t be interested or learn something they can’t see. So try to rehearse the presentation with someone seated from the screen as far away as the actual audience.

My state in Australia is funding more and more public transport (mostly upgrading train routes). This is fantastic, but it costing a huge amount. I think they should have done it more in sages rather than try and complete it all at once. I am really pleased that regional train tickets are now capped at $5 though, making it much cheaper for me to drive from my home into Melbourne.

there's a reason why in america we all use cars, its because public transport sucks and most of america just straight up isnt walkable, being a large country.

That's not what walkable means. If America was walkable then you still wouldn't be able to walk all the way across Los Angeles (well, you *could*, but that would be really far), a walkable America means being able to easily walk from your house to a Target 2 miles away instead of driving. And then public transport would solve the "walk all the way across Los Angeles" thing (and something like an improved Amtrak system would help for between states & cities)

I took my bf to a secret spot recently in the rainforest Gold Coast area. To see trees that are over 300-400 years old, we got so lucky and saw a female lyre bird (only saw boys as a kid growing up and haven’t seen one myself in 20yrs+) so amazing. Forgot how great the rainforest is. Best part, no one has been to the secret spot by looks of the place too 😂 total bear Grylls style activities

My country doesn’t have enough forest cover for its total land area and the worst part is that despite the fact that we’re constitutionally socialist, the local government in my area is allowing corporations to cut down the nearby forests and expel the tribals and villagers just to make many more tech parks

The following recommendation is to focus on the points that your data illustrates. Don’t leave your audience to decode the data presented to them.

“Data slides aren’t really about the data. They’re about the meaning of the data,” explains presentation design expert Nancy Duarte. “It’s up to you to make that meaning clear before you click away. Otherwise, the audience won’t process—let alone buy—your argument.”

You also have to factor in just how much China exports to these other countries. It's easy to hide your carbon footprint or fossil fuel consumption if you just get someone else to do all the dirty work.

Well, you could buy a reusable straw. But seriously, yeah, it is kinda ridiculous that China consumes so much fossil fuels. But they are also out pacing us when it comes to renewables as well. And to be honest, we're lagging behind, especially with the current political climate in our nation.

Similarly, experts discourage sharing too many details at once. Present one, and they stress only one major point from each chart you show. To ensure that happens, ask yourself, "What is the single most important thing that I want my audience to take away from the data presented?"

Data-presentation guru Scott Berinato says, “The impulse is to include everything you know, [but] busy charts communicate the idea that you’ve been just that—busy, as in: ‘Look at all the data I have and the work I’ve done.’”

It's as much a travel method as cross-country trains I guess. At least in Australia, people will take The Gahn etc, maybe getting off for day trips along the way, but sleeping on it, then travelling all the way back again.

Because the passenger density on ferries is much higher than on cruise ships, ferries carry up to 10 times as many passengers per ton of displacement than cruise ships.

While crafting a chart, it’s also advised to clearly label its components. Having watched the visualization for a long time, everything might be clear to you, but the audience will look at it for mere seconds. In those seconds, they need to be able to understand the chart clearly. To achieve this, use simple, clear, and complete language to identify the X and Y axes, pie pieces, bars, and other elements included. Avoid abbreviations that might be confusing to others.

Almost assuredly. Diet drinks replace the sugar with a similar amount, though usually slightly lesser due to the potency of sweetness,, of artificial sweeteners. That being said, they don't break down into glucose s normal sugar does. You won't get diabetes from it, but I can't speak for any forms of cancer you might get from artificial sweetener.

Not all of these were pirates, some were privateers. Privateers were private seafarers that operated under a letter of marque from their own monarch/government that allowed them to attack the ships and territory of countries hostile to their own. They had legal protections but also strict rules of engagement. Pirates were criminals that attacked the ships and territory of anyone they chose and operated under no rules but their own. It is inaccurate and lazy to classify privateers and pirates as the same.

As someone living in the US, I can tell you it's not just about having paid time off (PTO), but having an infrastructure and laws that supports taking that time off. I have almost 3 months of PTO saved up. I take just enough every year to not lose my time. The barriers I have to taking off more time are very common: 1) systemic understaffing at my job; 2) a culture that devalues self-care; 3) a struggling labor union that continues to be stripped of its power by federal lawmakers and courts; 4) excessively high prices for travel; 5) fears about safety and ability to return to the country if you can afford to travel abroad; 6) fears about safety if traveling to another US state that does not have the same civil rights protections as the one you live in.

I'm in the US and I will take 40 this year. I love working for danaher corporation, and I highly recommend them (they are in over 100 countries and I can say that Europe still does have advantages, but the discrepancy is way lower than most companies).

Hungary has the basic 20, plus depending on age a +10 max (I have 30 days per year). If you have children, +2 days per child per year. And there could be additional factors contributing to numbers, e.g. at the company I work for, if you have some disability, that with you still can work (e.g. hearing impairment is not an excluding factor for. e.g. carpentry), you get some additional days, and leaders ("bosses") get i think 2 days yearly.

Driving down a street with no streetlights one night in Virginia, something big flew right in front of the windshield of my minivan, completely blocking with windshield it for a few seconds. I could make out two eyes in the middle of it. I had all three kids in my car, and they were screaming, though it turned to laughter after it disappeared. My brain tells me it had to be a huge owl (attacking a moving minivan?? Ok), but it also strongly resembled the sketches I've seen of Mothman.

Ewan McGregor and his friend, Charley Boorman, have made several documentaries (really worth watching in order) riding motorbikes through loads of countries: The Long Way . . . series. By far the most dangerous one (really, otherwise they didn’t experience any actual human induced danger) was The Long Way up from the tip of South America up, back to California. Of course they had to miss the Darien Gap, but travelling through Mexico got more and more fraught and they even got word that there were plans to kidnap Ewan. They had to go to extraordinary measures to continue their journey but keep him safe. Actually scary.

I want so badly to say 'or kindness' but I'm in the f****n US right now and we have had TV spots for people in front of immigrants behind bars in concentration camps. It seems like so many people are choosing to be straight up terrible and they are e v e r y w h e r e. No matter how much you intuitively know and understand about this, the whole life goes on c**p is here in real time. I go get eggs while a rectangle in my pocket goes off with news you can't rely on and the opinions of people who THINK THIS IS COOL. The person that thinks this could be any one of these other people there with me, just buying eggs, and you cannot know who it will be. Makes trusting kindnesses super difficult. Womp womp.

I read a scientific article recently that claimed lobsters DO actually feel pain when boiled alive! It really made me think. Also, do you know fish that are left alive after being caught actually suffer massive pain the entire time until they are killed? That totally freaked me out!

I work in IT, but went to school to be a lawyer and got an MBA in legal studies before I decided not to be a lawyer. That degree didn't help for a while, but it had been invaluable later in my career. Also I was a college radio DJ and my school let's alumni do a show during alumni week each year, so I look forward to that so much. Aside from my family, college is the one thing in my past I would never change. You're right that it depends on your field, but at some level it can still help. I know an electrician who has a master's degree, he went back to get it and now instead of installing wires for $60/hour, he makes drawings (much easier as he's gotten older) for $200/hour.

Not only was it astronomically expensive, but their computer system to pay did not give me any option to opt out of a tip. I was FORCED to leave a tip in the amount of their choosing. I hate tipping. Never tipping again. it's ridiculous especially when you go to places like these frozen yogurt parlors where you are serving and cleaning up after yourself. You'd better have outstanding customer service or be doing backflips at my table for me to leave a tip

In Australia, land size is generally smaller than 20 years ago, but house size is bigger. All these McMansions taking up whole blocks and subdivisions for townhouses has made a difference. The number of occupants on average I am curious about, because we have many immigrant families who live in multi generational homes, as well as many 20-30 year olds living with their parents for longer as they can't afford to buy their own home.

Good, I live in one of the redder states and it’s really bad as you’ll have people hooked on nicotine in any form. Near my school there were a lot of cigarette butts and gutka packets strewn about and I unfortunately live in an area with a lot of smokers so the smell is truly wonderful

    1) Giant, Food Lion, and Stop and Shop are the same company, Ahold Delhaize, who bought them all, and they all share the same store brands now. 2) But Wegmans is not the most popular in NY, if you go by sales, they are 3, behind Stop and Shop and Shoprite, if you go by location number is keyfood . Wegmans is big in the Western and Central NY regions, but overall state numbers, its 3 or 4

A small, but non-zero amount of pet owners also own Leeches as pets. Yeah, that kind of leech. No, I don't know what you do with a leech. Yes, they are often kept in medical-jar style containers like you'd see an old-time doctor using. They are, for the record, ungodly expensive, too. The ones sold as pet leeches, anyways. You can go online and buy yourself a bucket full of leeches for a fraction of the price, but you sell it as a pet leech and suddenly it's price ranges you'd expect to see when buying a cat or dog.

Apart from a handful of examples of countries clearly in conflict with each other, it hadn’t occurred to me that some passports would get you into more countries than others. Why is this? Why, for example, do ten less countries want the inhabitants of Liechtenstein visiting than Luxemburgians?
