According to Rolling Stone, 1984 was the best year of pop music the world has ever seen. And there’s no doubt that it was legendary. We were blessed with the releases of Prince’s “When Doves Cry,” Michael Jackson’s “Thriller,” Cyndi Lauper’s “Time After Time,” a-ha’s “Take on Me,” Sade's “Smooth Operator,” Tina Turner’s “What’s Love Got to Do With It?” and many more absolute bangers.
But let’s not forget that the entire decade of the 1980s was filled with amazing music, bold fashion choices, unforgettable films, and thankfully, lots of cameras. Bored Panda has compiled a list down below of the most iconic photos from the ’80s people have managed to hold onto. So enjoy scrolling through this list that might give you a massive wave of nostalgia, and be sure to upvote the photos that make you wish that you had a time machine!

My Mama Circa '83. This Explains Why I'm The Uncoolest Person Ever, Cos She Took It All! Oh And That Bike? She Built It
My Mother When She Was A Tank Instructor In 1984
She is in the Israeli armor corp. Basic training commanders were men, but there were a large number of women who were instructors at "Tank School" and they taught the soldiers how to do their various jobs (driver, gunner, etc). That looks like the driver's hatch of an M-113, though, not a tank.
one of the first "cool" tasks given to women in the IDF
Load More Replies...And even under those circumstances, her hair looks GREAT! (Kidding aside, anyone who can be a tank instructor deserves a great deal of respect.)
My Dad, My Brother And Me Vandalizing The Berlin Wall 1988 (We Lived On The West-Side)
I remember seeing little chunks of hard material, packed in tiny boxes, for sale at the retail store Prange Way in early 1990s. "Own a Piece of the Berlin Wall," the boxes advertised.
Parts of the wall were really sold, but many of them were fake
Load More Replies...It's not like its destruction was scheduled.
Load More Replies...My mother's family immigrated from Deutschland. I actually have 2 pieces of the Berlin Wall with graffiti on them. My Oma revisited after the wall came down, and brought back a suitcase full of pieces our family had gathered. Amazing, and I am so proud to be German!
Probably the most shocking of the historical event was David Hasslehoff singing during the removal. Like huh? Turns out he was a huge popstar in Europe. He was pretty much a joke by then in the US.
I actually knew a few idiots that bought those tiny pieces. I always thought they were from domestic demolition sites.
This is one of the only situations I can think of, in which I can absolutely condone vandalism.
Fun fact: the Berlin Wall was built 100% on the East side of the border. These people are actually in East Berlin. I've read that sometimes East German border guards would grab West Berliners who vandalised the wall - they did have some sturdy doors here and there to enable them to do so.
While we’ve already touched on some of the biggest hits, it’s impossible to show appreciation for the 1980s without giving the decade more credit for its music. Almost all of Prince’s iconic songs came from the ’80s, along with many of Madonna’s. Michael Jackson also had plenty of classics from this decade, as well as Whitney Houston.
We can’t forget about all of the amazing groups from this era too: Duran Duran, The Smiths, The Cure, N.W.A., R.E.M., New Order, Depeche Mode, Talking Heads, The Clash, Joy Division, and more. David Bowie was also on fire during the ’80s, alongside Tina Turner, Janet Jackson, and Cher. You could easily stick to only music from the 1980s for the rest of your life and still have great tunes to play in any situation!

Oh yes. It was a thing in the 70's and early 80's. Hardcore skaters were trying to get a feel for the board as surfers did.

My Dad And Friends Look Like The Cast Of Stranger Things (1982)
Only Hollywood product that was ever realistic enough to trigger nostalgia was Stranger Things season 1. OK, except for the whole upside-down thing. Maybe.
No, no, The Upside-Down was pretty bog standard for the midwest in the 80s.
Load More Replies...Need to photoshop a DND battlemat and figures in the middle, with rule books, sheets, and dice. (Plus Cheetos and Mountain Dew)
The boy in the blue t-shirt looks so much like my son as a child, I saved this photo when I last saw it & showed him. He agreed.
This reminds me of the closing line in "Stand By Me": "I never had any friends later on like the ones I had when I was 12. Jesus, does anyone?" and this is true. As I type this, I am smiling while I remember those friends: Debbie, Dawn, and Maria.
Another aspect of the 1980s that we can never forget is the incredible fashion of the decade. When you think of the ’80s, bright colors, spandex, and fanny packs might come to mind. But there was so much more! Vogue published a piece breaking down the biggest fashion trends of the era, and they first mention women’s power suits. Big shoulder pads and blazers over tight skirts were all the rage, even for women who weren’t in business.
On the other hand, many women were also stepping into spandex and Lycra bodysuits to get their jazzercise on. Fitness outfits from the ’80s were iconic, with vibrant colors, big scrunchies, leg warmers, and more. There was no time in the 1980s when you could avoid being a fashionista, not even while you worked out alongside a Jane Fonda tape!
My Dad Got In Trouble For Skipping School Because The Local Paper Printed This Picture Of Him, 1984
Years later I finally found out how I got skipping school all those times. It was the bus drivers! They knew all the kids (especially the trouble makers), talked for hours between runs at the bus garage and oh, one of them was our next door neighbor.
My 7th grade year my school gave out 'prizes', I won the 'most notorious skipper' category, but guess who skipped the assembly where it was awarded. 🖐 haha

My Mom And Bob Ross During An Event In Central Park, NYC In 1989
Many of his paintings are now being sold by his former television station to keep the program alive, as your president has cut all subsidies.
I believe he had three for each episode...practice, working, and then final. To your point money made was off the Bob Ross painting method materials and supplies. And yes, years ago these largely were never sold although a few I believe were given away...not with funding concerns some have been put up for sale. Think his son also followed in his footsteps and there may have been some angst within the estate following his passing. If you get a chance, look up his previous career...b-* USAF drill sergeant (pre-perm), believe he vowed to never yell and raise his voice after his service...hence his exceptionally calm demeanor.
Load More Replies...As for men’s fashion choices in the 1980s, hip-hop influenced a lot of people. Bucket hats, gold chains, acid-wash jeans, and tracksuits were popularized after fans saw their favorite celebrities sporting them. But women were inspired by their favorite stars too, with many taking inspiration from Madonna’s iconic looks or Princess Diana’s posh wardrobe. And, of course, many took fashion inspiration from what they saw on the screen. If you loved an outfit that appeared in a John Hughes film, you might try to recreate it yourself.

My Mom In NYC, When She Sailed Around The World [1984-85]
Just like with fashion and music, our preferences in movies are subjective. But no matter what you like to watch, I’m sure there’s an ’80s film out there that you love! And if you’re in need of some suggestions, Rotten Tomatoes has compiled a list of the most beloved films from the decade of decadence.
Now, let’s start with the top ten: Back to the Future, E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial, Ghostbusters, Star Wars: Episode V, Sixteen Candles, The Shining, Raging Bull, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Do the Right Thing, and The Princess Bride.

I was 19 and she was 18, I admit that we married way too young, but it lasted 17 years and 2 beautiful daughters came along too, one daughter who is now 30 and the other who is 27. I was a drummer in a rock band at the time and my best man was the lead guitarist. I hope you all enjoy the 80’s style! You know that long hair looks awesome with a top hat! Slash would be proud.
If those films aren’t exactly what you’re looking for, don’t worry, there’s plenty more to choose from. If you’re looking for more action or something sci-fi, Blade Runner and The Terminator are great options. If you want a comedy, Airplane! never disappoints. And of course, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off is a hit too. If you want a wholesome romantic comedy, you can’t go wrong with Say Anything or When Harry Met Sally. And if you want a coming-of-age film, The Breakfast Club is the way to go.

Terry Fox Was 22 Years Old In 1980 When He Set Out To Run Approximately 8,000 Kilometres Across Canada
I remember this. What an amazing man! He’d had his leg amputated due to cancer and he was running to raise money for cancer research. Sadly, he wasn’t able to complete his run. After 5300 kilometers, he was coughing and having chest pains. An x-ray showed his cancer had returned and had spread to his lungs. He passed away on June 28, 1981.
His legacy is amazing - the Terry Fox Foundation has raised close to a billion dollars for cancer research.
My Filipino Mom In 1985 Dressed As Pris From Bladerunner On Halloween
Today, the 1980s are often romanticized in the media as a nearly perfect decade. Kids had just enough technology to enjoy arcade games, but they weren’t glued to their cell phones. The average person could own a camera and capture moments from their life, but they didn’t have to worry about how they were perceived on social media. Of course, there were still plenty of issues during that time, from the Cold War to the AIDS epidemic. But overall, it seemed like a much simpler period than the one we're currently experiencing.

We’ll never be able to return to the ’80s (unless someone out there is developing a time machine à la Doc Brown), but that doesn’t mean that we can’t bring it back in our own ways. If you’ve held onto your Walkman and cassette tapes for decades, keep listening to them! If you still have the VHS tapes with your children’s favorite films, never give them away. And if that old point-and-shoot camera will still work with some new batteries and a fresh roll of film, there’s no reason to stop using it. Why not infuse a bit of nostalgia into your everyday life?
Christmas Morning In 1985, I Was Thrilled To Get A Typewriter
I got my first computer two years before that. It was also a cream box shape, not unlike the typewriter. LOL
My first computer was an Apple IIe we got in 1987. I learned to write in BASIC on that baby, and it started my obsession with all things electronic. My first TV was Magnavox we got in 1992. I was already a teenager and had no interest in TV. My parents had their priorities in order.
Load More Replies...My friend had a typewriter like that in the 80s. I remember trying to write a letter to my dad on it several times, before getting frustrated and giving up.
My son (10) begged for a typewriter for months. Found one at an estate sale for $2. He loves it!
Now people are going back to traditional typewriters to do crafts. I think it's the tactile element that makes them feel connected to the written word.

The 1980 Eruption Of Mt St. Helens
Probably most circulated Helen's eruption photo out there. Still an awesome and terrifying sight.
I was in Tacoma. I had a clear, no color rain coat, which was the thing at the time. I remember being outside and sliding my hand down the arm of my coat and having wet, light gray soot running off.
I live in Vancouver, Canada, and clearly remember hearing the blast of the eruption. I thought something had hit my bedroom window.
Load More Replies...Earlier this year I was flying from SeaTac to Houston to visit my sister. The plane flew right by Mt St Helens; I'm ashamed to say I was born in Washington, have lived here my whole life, and have never actually seen the famed volcano. It was absolutely mind-boggling. The mountain is horseshoe-shaped; one side is completely gone! I cannot even imagine how huge and violent the eruption was. My mom was a child at the time, living in eastern Washington. She said ash covered everything like snow
Why is that motorcycle's wheel up on the bumper of that car though?
It's hitched to the car as the photographer was going to use it to get closer to the volcano after setting up camp. He got there later then he planned which likely saved his life. After taking the shot he stated driving away but he had to abandon the car as the ash made it hard to see, he rode to safety on the motorbike.
Load More Replies...1980 was my first Xmas as a single mom, I ended up with the cheapest Xmas tree on the lot, which came from a forest covered in ash from Mt. St. Helens. The poor little tree was pale green from not getting enough sun, and it was really short and lopsided. Only cost me $4, which was about all I could afford, since I still had to buy ornaments from K-Mart. It was a sad little tree, but I loved it because my son had fun decorating it, and it was all ours! :)
I lived in Portland, Oregon. My daughter was born exactly one week before the eruption. I didn't not take her outside for a couple weeks after this. I use to watch the smoke come out of the top from work, before it erupted. I now live on the Washington side. I can see Mt St Helens very well on a clear day.

I was exhausted, close to my limits. It was not triumph over the mountain, but over fear, doubt, and human limitation.
In 1953 or '54 Sir John Hunt came to our village to give a talk about the first 'conquest' of the mountain. I was young and the only thing I remember was him recounting how the oxygen bottles were heavy and cumbersome, so Hillary and Tenzing Norgay ditched them for the final a*****t on the summit. The air was so thin that after every step they had to stop and take six deep breaths. Recently I read that they did use oxygen, so I'm confused. At least I now know it's possible without.
Nostalgia From 1982. Me And Four Friends (All Still Friends Today) Doing What Kids Did Back Then. Made Memories At The Roller-Skate Park
Skating is still a thing! Sadly not as widespread as (I believe) it should be!
Friday night at the roller rink was the highlight of the week for me! So many great memories.
Still have a roller rink in Big Rapids Michigan. The one I used to go to in Lake, Mich. burned, never to be replaced.
There is one in the south eastern suburbs of Melbourne I used to go to that's still around. The one I went to before moving is now an indoor playcentre.
Load More Replies...We have a "family fun center" that opened up near me a while back. It has a bowling alley, snack bar, bumper cars, lazer tag, arcade, and of course, a small skating rink. We went there with my family three or four years ago, and of course I went right for the rink. Most of the Gen Z's (younger kids) were falling all over themselves trying to skate. Meanwhile, my old fat Gen X àss was skating circles around them. They were amazed. I was like, "This was my childhood, man. I grew up doing this, every single Friday and Saturday night!" It was so funny, lol!!

My mum and dad's wedding was in the 80s and she just wanted a 'bring a plate' (potluck) afternoon tea after, but my grandad insisted on it being catered. Their church's catering group did it, so it still cost less than $200. My grandma made the wedding cake and my mum still has the royal icing fans and flowers that adorned the top.

That's me on the right in the first picture. The man I'm shaking hands with is the franchise owner, an super nice man that everyone loved. He had stopped in for a visit on one of the days I brought my camera.
I worked at a SE Indiana McDonalds 1987 to 1990. It was my first job. Pay was $3.35 an hour. I was so proud of my new job that I brought my mom's camera in (a Pentax IQ Zoom) and started taking pictures of everyday activities and of my new friends and coworkers. I took pictures almost four years. It was a great experience. Much of the crew was the same age and we all got along. We became collectively friends and hung out after work at parties and other fun events.
I learned a lot from working there. Many of the crew became friends for a long time.

This is making me almost wish I had di.ed right after finishing university in the late 80s. But not really, because then I would have missed out on the 90s, some good friends, good parties, good concerts, meeting my partner, and having Obama as POTUS. So, I’ll revise that wish: I wish the good things about the 80s had stayed around.

Well you would have had mondale. Because the yuppies then wanted Gary Hart. The almost-pulled-it-off candidacy of Colorado Senator Gary Hart and the emerging yuppie demographic that made up his base. They don’t remotely resemble the working-class base we associate with Trump today. But together, they helped shift the Democratic Party’s focus away from its labor coalition and toward the hyper-educated liberal voters it largely represents today, eventually creating an opening for Trump to cast Democrats as out-of-touch elites and draw the white working class away from them. In fact, if it weren’t for 1980s yuppies and the way they shifted America’s political parties, the modern MAGA GOP might never have arisen in the first place.

The 90s were the best. We were living the age of the Peace Dividend. The robots in the Matrix had it right.
