There is something deeply satisfying about digging up the earth, planting some seeds and then watching the (sometimes literal) fruit of your labor sprout. If you feel this way, you are definitely not alone, as there are all sorts of online groups dedicated to this very topic.

The “GardenTime” Facebook group is dedicated to funny and insightful posts about growing things at home. We also got in touch with gardening expert and home farmer Charles Dowding to learn more. So get comfortable as you scroll through, upvote your favorites and be sure to comment your thoughts below.

As a wheelchair user, please ensure paths are wide enough for wheelchairs, mobility scooters and pushchairs to not have plants rubbing against them. Sap is sticky, people have allergies, etc. It does look great, though.

I live in Montreal where the city has been aggressively transforming our greenspaces into this. It's amazing. Most residential streets are losing 2 parking spots to enable a garden at each end, and they're cutting into the sidewalks every 3 meters to add as many trees as possible. The green areas are filled with perennial plants and flowers that bloom from spring till winter. It's amazing here!

How can anyone look at these two photos and tell me that diversity isn't beautiful?

A majority, if not all, HOAs would fine you for this "mess of weeds". It's been happening more and more lately. Can't all of us rally together to bsn them? I love native yards. Grass is such a waste of water.

Yes. But with WAY better edge maintenance, as that overgrown setup can be an accessibility/hazard issue for a variety of disabled people.

Not to mention, if this is near an intersection, it can block visibility for motorists.

Bottom picture neighborhood probably doesn't have a HOA. Good for them.

It's gorgeous... but it's not like that's wildflowers growing spontaneously. That is someone's work of love. The sad thing is it's also probably illegal since they're planting on the verge strip.

I will probably get down voted for this but I prefer the top picture. I am all for bio diversity but to me this I don't care for crowed areas like this. Plus if these plants keeping growing it will entually overcome the sidewalk and then there will be no room to walk down the sidewalk. To mee it looks like there is less sidewalk to walk on now.

Okay but keep it back from the sidewalk please! That's a mess, it's not beautiful it's hazardous when it's impeding sidewalk traffic.

They've got to cut the grass anyway, so not much difference to cut the shrubs back a few times a year,

I wish I could torch every house that blocked the sidewalks with plant matter and stinging bees at face level for me and my wheelchair

Or you could, you know, ask them to trim it back. The people in our neighbourhood were happy to do that when we asked.

Bored Panda got in touch with home farmer, gardener and general horticultural expert Charles Dowding to learn more about growing things. First and foremost, we wanted to hear his take on what to plant. After all, there is one school of thought that believes in purely aesthetic gardens, while others strive for “practicality.”

“Edible plants have their own beauty. Vegetables of different colors and structure can look good all year especially when using no dig methods. That’s because you can easily keep replanting to have a full garden, and no dig plants look healthier with glowing leaves,” he shared.

Naturally, if you will pardon the pun, we were curious to hear his opinion on what sorts of plants are good for beginners. “Potatoes, courgette/zucchini, garlic (plant October), salad onions and salad leaves of any kind. Especially lettuce which can produce so much when you “pick and come again”, and homegrown lettuce has great flavor!”

So if you are interested in learning more, Charles suggested a few resources. “If you don’t know it yet, please check out the no dig method via my website and YouTube channel. No dig saves so much time, whether you grow ornamentals or vegetables. You will notice your plants looking exuberant, fewer weeds, and more time to enjoy the garden.”

My parents had their garden redone with all native species and you would not believe the amount of wildlife it attracts. I even saw my first blue-banded native bee, a species that until then I didn't even know existed!

I'm allergic to sunflowers and would probably die, but it might be worth it.

Charles also left us with some parting thoughts on what sort of questions to ask yourself. “Become curious! How do plants grow? New research into rhizophagy shows the importance of bacteria. How much watering is necessary? Often less! What is the best spacing? Depends partly on what you want from the plants.” If you want to see more gardening memes, check out our previous article on the topic.

I've just planted lots of "colourful sunflowers" (that's what it says in the pack) and I'm hoping to see this!

Shame they’ll get destroyed when they finally do fix the holes. Someone near me went around at night painting dongs and boobs on potholes - council fixed them a lot quicker!

Adds a little frisson of danger (getting spiked) to the otherwise rather staid game of chess!

I would rather have a barrel, so I could chose not to waterboard the plants during a rainstorm.. 🤷‍♂️

If I were an ill mannered person I would "call BS on this". However I will confine myself to "gosh what's the name of this amazing plant"

My nephew gave me the side-eye when I told him there are purple carrots. He SO clearly thought I was just trying to mess with him (he's very young). So when I couldn't find any at the greengrocer I ordered a packet of seeds and grew carrots in everything from purple to white, and presented them to him when he came visiting. He took them home with him. :D

I thinkk these are dyed. It's a supermarket trend in the uk to dye them blue, and I hate it.
