73 Embarrassing School Pictures That Turned Into Funny Memories Years Later

Photographs are a nice way to preserve memories. I, for example, can hardly remember many things from my childhood. I sometimes regret not taking many photos during my teenage years, too, since I would have physical proof of some of the coolest things that happened to me instead of having to rely on my memory alone.

Surprisingly, other people remember quite a lot from their childhoods. According to a 2022 YouGov poll, the most common age to recall your first memory is three or four years old. 44% of the respondents said they recall their first day of school (I do too, thankfully!), but most find it easier to remember a pet, a family holiday, or playing games.

Memories from school have an imprint on our minds even in adulthood. Many grown-ups remember their first teacher and the impact they've had on them. In fact, 77% of Americans say they had a favorite teacher in school, but one-third admit they never thanked them. At least, they wish they had.

People don't easily forget other school staff members. According to another poll, 39% of Americans can still recall the names of their school bus drivers. Interestingly, women (42%) are more likely to do so than men (35%). Even in adulthood, people associate school bus rides with making friends, their first day at school, bumpy rides in the back of the bus, and field trips.

Everyone's school experience is different, but national surveys show that people have had many similar ones. At least that's what they remember when they're adults. The four most common experiences that at least 75% of American adults have had include crushing on somebody, friendships, classes they liked, and classes they hated.

As a kid, I imagined that my high school experience would be similar to what I saw in Hollywood movies. I was greatly disappointed when the time to be in high school actually came. However, that's not the experience of most American adults. On the contrary, the majority of Americans remember their high school experience as positive. 18% say they loved being in high school, and 31% still like that period.

Would you want to repeat your high school years, Pandas? Perhaps surprisingly, many people would. In fact, 54% of Americans say they would like to go back to high school. For many, it's a fantasy of turning back time in hopes of changing the present and the future. If they had the chance, 43% would do things differently this time, and only 12% would do everything completely the same.

School photos are not just a remnant of the past; many schools still have picture days. Although we've never documented our lives in videos and photos as much as we do now, there's something special about the kind of posterity that school pictures can provide. Photographer and former primary school teacher Brett Scapin explained to The Guardian that they act as a sort of flipbook through the years. "You like how constant they are. There needs to be that consistency from year to year so you can compare."

In a way, school photos aren't really for us – they're more for our parents to have as keepsakes. As a 2024 YouGov poll revealed, parents of adult children hold on to things like photographs, art, report cards, videos, and handmade cards. 48% of Americans say they still have the school yearbook that belonged to their kid who's now an adult.
