Nobody’s perfect, and everyone has knowledge blind spots. It’s healthy to recognize your shortcomings and be able to laugh at them. Sometimes, that means chuckling at yourself after you get called out online for saying something, well… less than smart.
Bored Panda has collected some of the funniest moments when Europeans gently roasted Americans for writing bizarre comments online, from all over the internet. Scroll down to see some of the most cringy insights and witty takedowns.
Just keep in mind that none of this is meant to promote meanness. It’s all for the sake of lighthearted humor. We all say dumb things from time to time, no matter where we’re from.

The "pro life" crowd in America doesn't care that guns are responsible for the most child deaths in America.
This is really flabbergasting for Europeans...... denying women abortions because of "pro life" and at the same time letting them be targets for any idiot with a gun. I don't think I'll ever be able to comprehend that.

People calling themselves expats have already identified themselves as bigoted racists, the MAGA part is superfluous.

Hope Y’all Are Enjoying Those Gas Prices
Americans commenting on gas prices always makes me chuckle. Like for like car in europe vs America, ours go twice as far on the same amount of fuel. Guess what you're buying a sub standard product and they just says it cheaper. My God no wonder they get away with all the things they do to their citizens.
I live in Florida, one of the few states that voted against increased Medicaid funding. I just heard that over 260,000 Floridians list their insurance through the ACA because of ridiculous price hikes. The US could definitely take some lessons from Europe.
Really? So people in Africa, Asia, South America and Australia don't exist?
FYI: because they didnt think of it 250 years ago, each STATE must resolve to have Universal Healthcare

Americans will literally travel the world and get mad that everyone doesn't speak english. Honestly, if a tsunami took us out, it would do the world a favor.
The orange traitor does NOT reflect my views. trumpy people are NOT my friends. I am ashamed of so many of my countrymen now.
You people are so delusional. You live for dictators, murderers, traffickers and basic slime. You pretend to be ponies and dragons or girly men. You have no grasp on any kind of reality. Your utter and complete hypocrisy is history making. And I appreciate your down votes as it's just more proof I'm right. Bonkers people.
but remember, america is 4% of the world so therefore it IS the world
Learning to respect other cultures doesn’t happen overnight. It requires dedication, open-mindedness, and a willingness to acknowledge your own biases and knowledge blind spots. Traveling abroad, doing research about other countries’ histories, and talking to people from different backgrounds and with different perspectives can help broaden your mind. As a rule of thumb, if you can recognize that you’ve said some dumb things in the past, it shows that you’re maturing and that your self-awareness is growing
When traveling, it’s not enough to put on a silly tourist hat, grab your camera, and enjoy the sights. It’s best to go abroad with empathy and curiosity, instead of demanding the rest of the world conform to your expectations and assumptions.
Person Forgets Not Everyone Is American
Shouldn't squawk too much. Have you ever listened to some of those southern US types? I'm not sure they speak English.
My English is just fine thank you...... My accent on the other hand........ Now that's a different row of corn🤣
Load More Replies...As an exchange student to Germany in 1976 I learned that German students were required to take 7 years of English. Yep, 7. So when you hear a person whose English skills are not up to your standards, ask yourself how well you speak their language.
Amicans used to have a second language requirement, what happened to that?
It says a lot that the US had to form a simplified spelling board to make English easier, as they found it difficult to spell or prononuce a lot of British English words.
The thread is NOT about English accents spoken around the world, but the stiupid demand of some rasist USans for everybody in US to speak English. No, you facking mooran. US has no official language. Nobody can force me to speak whatever language I like. Besides that never heard in any other country someone to demand all to speak the native language.
@nm, Just about your last sentence : In Europe (and throughout the world for that matter) throughout history and quite frequently, regional languages or dialects have been banned in order to impose an official language. Or perhaps I misunderstood what you meant.

Yeah, America is the place where the workers who build them were/are exploited. 'Course it's our fault for assuming the owners have our best interests at heart.
Not entirely your fault friend. When I moved to the US as a kid I was surprised to be taught that Henry Ford "invented" the modern assembly line. While he did introduce it to the US auto industry, assembly lines existed long before the Industrial Revolution. The concept was even discussed in the Wealth of Nations, a book by the Scottish economist Adam Smith, published in the late 18th Century. Hell Xenophon describes the creation of highly specialized divisions of labor in his work Cyropaedia, written in the 4th century BCE. There he observes that as cities grow, labor becomes more specialized into narrower aspects of production. That he envisions that as the complexity of production grows, he could foresee these specializations continue to narrow in such a way that a single item would be produced by a group of highly specialized professionals, rather than a single person from start to finish. Of course, he was a politician and a military leader, not a factory owner.

Americans Are "Foreign" Now?
Doctor: "How did this happen? Did you fell on it?"
Load More Replies...It’s very likely that you’ve personally witnessed some awful, disrespectful tourist behavior in your home country. Meanwhile, it’s probably also safe to say that you’ve also met foreigners who were kind, friendly, and respectful of both your culture and other travelers.
According to Go Abroad, you should strive to minimize the amount of bad tourist behaviors. In short, you have to be mindful of the local community, as well as the environment and wildlife.
For example, this can be as simple as not being noisy at night or respecting local religious traditions.
Do Germans Even Need A Refrigerator? They Literally Live In Snow Most Of The Time Of The Year
We actually DID have a few days of snow last week and the whole country broke down. No long distance trains, no school. It was like 5-10 cm of snow, mind you.
It’s not CM!!! It’s INCHES!! Libturd!!! (Lol jk, I’m an American. Slightly less ignorant than some, and probably slightly more than others depending on topic.) metric system!!!! Aaarrrrrrgggggghhhhh!!!!

Wow I feel attacked. I've been so nice to you folks too. I just live here man, I don't run things. Trumps not my fault, they won't let me vote. I got in trouble in 2007 for umm, Bolivian Marching Powder. So, ironically, you can run a country as a convicted felon, just can't vote for one.
I've only been to Germany a total of maybe a couple months over the years, but I have never seen snow once. I was mostly in Hamburg.
Do Italians Drive To Malta To Fill Up Their Tanks?
I have a friend who lives in Norway, and she apparently drives to Sweden every once in a while to do cheaper grocery shopping there! It was a bit of a mental adjustment to me to understand going to another COUNTRY for cheaper groceries. I live in California, which is one of America's larger states, so it was hard to wrap my head around it at first! XD
This is pretty normal if you live near the border. I go to the Netherlands every now and then and buy coffee and cheese. In Poland you get particularly good sausage, in France good wine and so on, no depending on where you live everything is at most a day trip away. 🙂
Load More Replies...In fairness, there is a ferry from Catania in Sicily. It connects to both mainland Italy and Malta, so you could sort of drive to Malta from Italy, it would just take a long time.
We lived in Germany and often drove to the Netherlands to buy from their excellent Hypermarkets. We'd start the day off early and go visit a tourist spot for most of the day then head to our preferred store, grab a meal at a local restaurant then head back over the border to home, once or twice a month. Long but fun day.
Well, it's just like the Canadians who USED to come down to my state (I live in Washington) or any other border state to go our Costcos. With the Orange Menace in office, businesses along the border have been suffering but I wouldn't want to come down here either. Elbows Up!
yes, many drive 100 miles/km to save 4 cents on a gallon. Even in my country.
Americans Really Do Have A Habit Of Assuming That Everyone Celebrates Thanksgiving
They are English. We like calling people wet wipe 😂😂
Load More Replies...Hey, now, Canada has Thanksgiving, so to speak, just in a completely different month than Murican Thanksgiving XD (I'm being an áss, don't take me seriously!)
My dad used to time his visits to Canadian friends & relatives to coincide with Canadian Thanksgiving, then come home again in time for US Thanksgiving so that he'd get two turkey dinners.
Load More Replies...But England bestowed more Independence Days around the world to celebrate than anyone else.
Load More Replies...People outside of America have excellent reasons for giving thanks. Their head of state, for example, in most cases.
In my country (Australia) we don’t celebrate Thanksgiving but we have, however, adopted your tradition of Black Friday - most major retailers have big Black Friday sales that run over the weekend. Normally we grumble when American culture creeps into our country, but nobody really complains about the sales because it means we get a chance to buy up all our big ticket Christmas presents
It should be common sense, but seeing as it’s in particularly short supply these days, it’s important to remember not to litter or damage landmarks. Not only is this immoral behavior, but depending on the country, you can get in some serious legal trouble, too.
Furthermore, during your travels, try to avoid taking part in activities that exploit other people or animals.
"It's Color Not Colour"
I've started using the "u" where the King's English would place it. My personal protest in America against what is happening here.
I got caught in a grammar snafu. I called someone out for saying “spelt” instead of “spelled…” apparently outside the Stars and Bars, “spelt” is a perfectly acceptable past tense of spell and not just a type of grain…
Be sure to say it like "koo-leuuuuuuurrrrhhhhh". ;)

Load More Replies...Meanwhile, becoming a better tourist is definitely possible with a bit of effort. You might not change how others perceive you, but you can ensure that you’ve done everything that you can to be respectful.
The first thing you should do is focus on research about the place you’ll be visiting. Read up on the local culture, customs, traditions, laws, and religions. Go through other travelers’ accounts about the challenges they faced. The more time you spend on research, the better prepared you’ll be. Of course, we all make mistakes eventually, but at least you’ll have a solid foundation for your trip.

It do, but my dumb American brain has a lot of trouble parsing "military time" XD I have issues with math/numbers in general (dyscalculia) so I can't easily look at the clock and see it says 17:30 and be like "oh, it's 5:30pm!" I've honestly tried to get better at it, it's not a laziness thing XD But here in Murica we're taught 12-hr time and we're taught the Imperial measurements, not metric. I know a lot of non-Americans think we're stupid for using Imperial and/or 12-hr time, but it's taught to us in school and all of our systems are set up to be displayed in Imperial units and 12-hr time. Load More Replies..."England Doesn't Speak English They Speak British. America Speaks English"
England does not speak english is like saying spain does not speak spanish, which Americans do claim
When I was a kid, a UK visitor kept correcting people who called her English - "I speak English. I am British!" She was Welsh, so understandable.
I only ever call myself British if I'm here on BP just because I know the Americans always call us British, but I always refer to myself as English any other time.
Wrong all of them. The only correct statement is people in England speaks Unitedkingdomish
Go Abroad also suggests eating, shopping, and staying locally for a more authentic experience. On top of that, you’ll also end up supporting local businesses and, potentially, save money.
In the meantime, broaden your horizons and visit other places aside from must-see, super popular touristy destinations.
“When possible, try traveling more off-the-beaten path or visiting a destination in the off season. Slow travel also helps one discover a place and its culture more meaningfully.”

I was adopted at birth into a Hispanic/Mexican-American family, and when I was a little kid, my great-grandma (who immigrated to the US from Mexico) had a little black dog whose name was "Négro". My great-grandma didn't speak much English and had NO idea that the word was offensive in English/American. Similarly, I used to get a lot of Christmas and birthday gifts of Mexican marker and crayon sets from my Mexican relatives, and yep, the black markers/crayons were labeled "négro" XD It's not an offensive term in Spanish because it's LITERALLY the word for "black" the color, but one must be aware and careful speaking Spanish in America as it IS an offensive racial slur in English.
In Spanish and Portuguese there are two words for Black. We both have "negro(a)", of course. But we have a second word that specifically refers to people of black skin. In spanish it is "prieto(a)" and in portuguese it's "preto(a)". These are considered offensive in our countries, though. However, at least in Brazil, it is common hear "preto" used to describe objects. Like that is a "carro preto" (black car). Race and racism are complicated topics in Brazil though, especially when so many people identify as "pardo" (brown) or mixed race, and we have such a deep and unsettling history with slavery.
Load More Replies...Somehow, the American institution UNCF -- United Negro College Fund -- still exists, has not been forced to change its name, and still does more good for American Blacks that the entire Federal government.

In The Netherlands people from Afrika are/were called "Neger" and it is still said
Also refering to someone as "negro" is an term of endearment and can be friendly too. I have a friend that we call "el negro" and it is not intendend as an insult.
"He Looks Very White For A Spanish Guy"
When I was a kid, we had an exchange student from Spain stay with us for a year. His name was Carlos, and he was as pale-skinned as I was (I'm adopted and white af) and he had blue eyes and blonde hair. My adoptive family is Mexican, and I grew up speaking Spanish, so I do admit that, as a child, I was initially shocked that Carlos looked "white". I honestly thought Spanish people looked similar to Mexican people because they both spoke versions of the Spanish language. My dad taught me about Spain and its cultural and ancestral history after that, so I learned a thing XD But I admit, when I was 9, it was a bit of a shock!
I am a Brazilian. Born in Brazil to parents born in Brazil. I have pale skin with dark brown hair (well, grey now) and dark brown eyes. I have a niece who's even more pale than I am. I have a sister-in-law from São Paulo who is of Japanese descent, and has VERY pale skin. And I have an aunt who is as dark as mahogany. When I lived in Mexico City I briefly dated a Mexican girl with blonde hair and blue eyes, and covered in freckles. I have a friend from Costa Rica with ginger hair and green eyes. We come in all shades in Latin America.
Load More Replies...My husband's family has a lot of Spanish heritage. There's a mixture of dark skinned and light skinned Hispanic people in his family. I honestly thought he was white when I first met him; it's a lot more obvious to me now, with the high Aztec cheekbones and nose, but I didn't think about it too closely back in the day. He's got light skin with olive green eyes. Neither of our sons look the least bit Hispanic aside from bone structure, but funnily enough, their cousins are much more dark skinned. Genetics are interesting.
half of my DNA is from mexico, but because my great grandfather was from spain, i am also part spanish, and its resulted in me having dark brown hair and pale skin. just in the past 3 years, ive been asked if im jewish, if im japanese, and if im albino
The Guardian also stresses that slow tourism can be a great idea.
“Slow tourism is about spending more time in a destination, engaging in the local culture and getting to know local people,” Dr. Peter Robinson, the head of the Centre for Tourism and Hospitality Management at Leeds Beckett University, told The Guardian. You could mix things up and go to the countryside instead of only visiting major cities.
American Thinks Everyone Should Be Using Fahrenheit
I admit I only "know" Fahrenheit (am American) but whenever I'm telling friends/people online a temperature (whether it's the temp outside where I live or something else) I do a quick Google of "What is 75F in C" and post the temperature as both measurements, like "It's 75F/24C outside and it's January! Friggin SoCal!" It's easy and takes approximately three seconds to do XD
How hard can it be: Water freezes at 0°C and boils at 100°C. Body temperature is 37°C. Room temperature is defined as 20°C. You don't need much more than that. Unless you bake. I live in both worlds, imperial and metric.
In the range of oven temperatures, it's close enough just to halve the number of Fahrenheit degrees.

Load More Replies...My great-grandfather is from Italy and it does show in my Ancestry DNA but not in my sister's (who is my full sister even according to them).
Ancestry DNA is just a bunch of statistics held together with duct tape. They break down your DNA in pieces and associate each with the area where it is most commonly found. But nothing in DNA is really exclusive from a region. It can be useful on a population and historical level to track the flow of people. And even nowadays it's not quite relevant anymore. But as a single person... It's a lottery.

Load More Replies...I'm adopted, and there's a reason why I embraced my Scottish and Irish ancestry as a teenager, when I found out my genetic heritage via one of those ancestry sites XD America is a very young country and we don't really have any "cultural heritage" of our own. My ex is Chinese and we used to have long talks about the thousands of years of culture and history of his parents' home country XD I do think a lot of Americans cling to the shallow "YEEHAW MURICA!!!" thing because we simply feel the lack of cultural history deep in our hearts and it makes us sad XD
What is the point of saying something like that? “ we have trees older than Europe”? As an American again this embarrasses me because don’t people understand that we’re only 250 years old? There are pubs in Europe that were established before Columbus came here and every now and then you find a structure that was established before even the Norsemen came here.

Considering how few Americans even have passports, we aren't the main tourists to any country but Mexico and Canada, most likely
Trying to convince my son to go to grad school in London or Berlin (MA Directing), just to get a wider perspective of life. (He's travelled to UK, France, Spain, Mexico, Germany, Panama, but a visit isn't the same as living somewhere.)
"The greatest number of estimated visits to Great Britain (GB) in 2024 were made by residents of the United States (5.6 million visits), followed by residents of France (3.6 million visits) and Germany (3.3 million visits)." ---> Office for National Statistics, Great Britain
Americans only ever visit London when they come to the UK anyway.
Yes please, don't visit, you're too loud and mostly too ignorant
If you're housebound, how do you know these things?

Is Texas the standard unit of area size for Americans? This is I think the third one of these I have seen in this thread so far. And just in case you still think Texas is the biggest bigly thing in the whole world, you could put Texas three times into Western Australia and there would still be space left over
I thought their standard size of units were bananas and football fields...

Did you know that Texas is so big that you can fit Texas inside it?
Texas is almost exactly twice the size of Germany. Blows my mind living in Germany's tiny neighbor, because in Europe, Germany is a very large country.
lol, the province of BC is over 100k square miles bigger than the state of Texas and that's not even our biggest province.
Fun fact: Western Australia is over 3 x the size of Texas

"We Rank Higher Than Most Countries In Food Health And Safety"
I'm American and - I am not being facetious - 99% of my family members are overweight/obese/morbidly obese. Fast food is everywhere and easy to get, and there is sugar added to EVERYTHING - our ketchup, our bread, etc. SO many of my relatives have Type II diabetes. One of my cousins died aged 24 due to massive kidney failure from his diabetes that he refused to deal with/treat. My aunt's mom had to have her arm amputated due to diabetes-caused gangrene. So many of my family members have died due to diabetes-related causes or complications from morbid obesity. My younger cousin was obese by the time she was 6. It's absolutely heartbreaking. (And it's 100% self-caused obesity in my family, not from PCOS or other health issues.) We used to have a huge family, and there are only about a dozen of my close relatives left alive at this point. It s***s. Not blaming Murica entirely as my family members had full control over what they ate (and we don't live in a food desert), but man.

My (Finnish) son visited US for a month last year, he had diarrhea the whole trip. Corn syrup in EVERYTHING.
The standards in The UK are also not on par with Europe anymore... Have bought a number of products recently that clearly had "Not for EU Consumption" printed on the packet.

It is actually weird to think of yourself as having an accent when surrounded by people who sound just like you. True, but weird.

This whole thread reinforces my embarrassment of my birth country. So many dumba$$es here actually think they can move anywhere in the world without restrictions, but WE (the U.S.) mustn’t let people from any other country move here without going through literal hell.
Anybody who now wants to relocate to the US from any country that's even semi-stable should be required to take a mental health exam. We ain't what we used to be, folks.

Sadly this is not just Americans., Canadians can be as bad. E.g. Coworker announced she was moving to Australia. I asked how she managed to get a work visa, she assured me "you don't need one". Couple of weeks later we heard she was asking for her job back because... Yeah, turns out she did need a work visa
“Isn’t This A Violation Of FAA Regulations?”
Nor is it subject to TSA. An issue that astounds Americans. Some try to bring in weapons, too.
As an American, I am constantly appalled and astounded (and not in a good way) by my fellow countrymen who visit other countries and pay zero attention and/or DGAF about the laws and rules of that country - so they try to waltz off the plane with a kilo of weed or other substances, or weapons, etc. - things that MIGHT be legal here in the States but are absolutely NOT legal in other countries. I vaguely recall some athlete traveling to a country where weed is very, VERY illegal (I think Indonesia?) and he brought weed with him and got caught. IIRC he WAS jailed for it and got all píssy about "his rights" and how weed wasn't illegal in America so it was totally acceptable for him to have it, because HE was American. Absolutely shameful.

Many Americans strongly identify with their heritage (although more than a few of them haven't looked at their entire genealogy and just go with the family folklore). I sometimes make jokes about my German ancestors being disappointed in me for not liking sauerkraut or mustard, but don't identify as "German-American". (My family were all Mennonites in Pennsylvania and until WW1/WW2, all spoke an old version of German.)

7 Days In Europe
To be fair, some cities in America are completely unwalkable/un-cycle-able. Things are just too spread out and too far apart. We're a car-centric country, sadly, and a lot of cities are laid out to make it impossible to easily walk to get groceries, go to the laundromat, etc. However, we all should be walking for EXERCISE XD
Honestly, that's what these threads are good for - I never knew that in the USA for many walking to work is basically impossible, even if it's just a few kilometres / miles away!
Load More Replies...One thing that I like about Long Beach, California (where I live), is that it is very walkable. It would only be about a 30-40 minute walk to work, but that isn't feasible because I'm not supposed to be walking through the container terminal...
I'm gonna object on this one. A lot of places in the US are unwalkable and even hostile to pedestrians.
So was our part of the city years ago, plus parked cars everywhere, holes in the sidewalk, no lanes for bikes. We organized and demanded the mayor to make it walkable and livable. We even had protests (and some of us were fined by the police) 😄 But now we have larger, new sidewalks with benches and trees and playgrounds for children. I'd say it's up to the residents to change things.
Load More Replies...Do Americans Not Use 24 Hour Format Or Get Taught About It Or What?
Serious question to americans here: you are so proud of your military and are constantly bragging about it. So what's the issue with the "military time"? Why you don't think it's cool or smh?
Here in Murica we're taught 12-hr time in school, NOT "military time". (Similarly, we're taught the Imperial measurements, not metric, in school.) I know a lot of non-Americans think we're stupid for using Imperial and/or 12-hr time, but it's taught to us in school and all of our systems are set up to be displayed in Imperial units and 12-hr time. I promise we're not all idiots, just scréwed over by our education system XD For the most part, ONLY the military uses "military time" - our clocks and everything else uses the 12-hr system, not the 24-hr system. It has nothing to do with being proud of the military or not - we're not taught 24-hr time in school, so most of us have a hard time parsing it easily.
Load More Replies...I'm more concerned they don't teach analog clocks anymore, and cursive is on the way out.
Genuine question; why are people so obsessed with being able to write in cursive?
Load More Replies...The military uses it, but that doesn't make it military. It would be like calling diesel "military fuel."
I get confused. a.m. = ante meridiem = before noon, p.m. = post meridiem = after noon. But 12 o'clock is noon, so it's neither before nor after. And midnight is equidistant from the previous and the next noon, so presumably it's both before and after.

Saw a post wondering why the US does not use the metric system as they've been using 9mm in schools for years.
In the US, we proudly buy a 2-liter bottle of soda and a half gallon of milk on the same trip to the grocery...
Here in the UK our pint is 20 fluid oz, yours is only 16 fluid oz. So when you buy what you call half a gallon you're just getting 64 fluid oz instead of the 80 fluid oz that we get. That's right, your gallon weighs just 8lbs but our (proper) gallon weighs 10lbs. Still proud?
Load More Replies...We're taught Imperial measurements, not metric, in school. I know a lot of non-Americans think Americans are stupid for using Imperial units, but it's taught to us in school and ALL of our systems are set up to be displayed in Imperial units (gasoline, tape measures, rulers, etc.) I promise we're not all idiots, just scréwed over by our education system XD And most sane Americans aren't like the ditz in the post above who thinks American culture is the "default". Most of us know we're the outcasts in terms of measurement units XD
UK schools taught imperial until we joined the EU. Decimal currency first then units of measurements. Most of us schooled in imperial managed the change quite easily.
Load More Replies...Why don't we just stop using words like "normal" when describing things like measurements? Or the spelling of certain words. We are using what is normal in our country. Most Americans are intelligent enough to recognize that other countries use other systems. It may be different. It's not abnormal.

"Your Biggest Trail Is Still Smaller Than Our Smallest"
It seems odd to me that "biggest" is assumed by so many people to equal "superior. A little 3 km walk might be the most delightful walk you've ever had in your life. What is all this boasting about biggest states, countries etc? So meaningless!
In Europe twelve official, marked, long distance international hiking routes can be enjoyed. The shortest is 1500km, the longest 12000km. Wikipedia has a very neat page about them. One of them, E9, runs alobg the village I live in. But unlike Bill Bryson with the Appalachian trail, I am not tempted to walk it.
