Learning to respect other cultures doesn’t happen overnight. It requires dedication, open-mindedness, and a willingness to acknowledge your own biases and knowledge blind spots. Traveling abroad, doing research about other countries’ histories, and talking to people from different backgrounds and with different perspectives can help broaden your mind. As a rule of thumb, if you can recognize that you’ve said some dumb things in the past, it shows that you’re maturing and that your self-awareness is growing
When traveling, it’s not enough to put on a silly tourist hat, grab your camera, and enjoy the sights. It’s best to go abroad with empathy and curiosity, instead of demanding the rest of the world conform to your expectations and assumptions.

Not entirely your fault friend. When I moved to the US as a kid I was surprised to be taught that Henry Ford "invented" the modern assembly line. While he did introduce it to the US auto industry, assembly lines existed long before the Industrial Revolution. The concept was even discussed in the Wealth of Nations, a book by the Scottish economist Adam Smith, published in the late 18th Century. Hell Xenophon describes the creation of highly specialized divisions of labor in his work Cyropaedia, written in the 4th century BCE. There he observes that as cities grow, labor becomes more specialized into narrower aspects of production. That he envisions that as the complexity of production grows, he could foresee these specializations continue to narrow in such a way that a single item would be produced by a group of highly specialized professionals, rather than a single person from start to finish. Of course, he was a politician and a military leader, not a factory owner.

According to Go Abroad, you should strive to minimize the amount of bad tourist behaviors. In short, you have to be mindful of the local community, as well as the environment and wildlife.
For example, this can be as simple as not being noisy at night or respecting local religious traditions.

It was a bit of a mental adjustment to me to understand going to another COUNTRY for cheaper groceries. We lived in Germany and often drove to the Netherlands to buy from their excellent Hypermarkets. We'd start the day off early and go visit a tourist spot for most of the day then head to our preferred store, grab a meal at a local restaurant then head back over the border to home, once or twice a month. In my country (Australia) we don’t celebrate Thanksgiving but we have, however, adopted your tradition of Black Friday - most major retailers have big Black Friday sales that run over the weekend. Normally we grumble when American culture creeps into our country, but nobody really complains about the sales because it means we get a chance to buy up all our big ticket Christmas presents

It do, but my dumb American brain has a lot of trouble parsing "military time" XD I have issues with math/numbers in general (dyscalculia) so I can't easily look at the clock and see it says 17:30 and be like "oh, it's 5:30pm!" I've honestly tried to get better at it, it's not a laziness thing XD But here in Murica we're taught 12-hr time and we're taught the Imperial measurements, not metric. I know a lot of non-Americans think we're stupid for using Imperial and/or 12-hr time, but it's taught to us in school and all of our systems are set up to be displayed in Imperial units and 12-hr time. I promise we're not all idiots, just scréwed over by our education system XD

I was adopted at birth into a Hispanic/Mexican-American family, and when I was a little kid, my great-grandma (who immigrated to the US from Mexico) had a little black dog whose name was "Négro". My great-grandma didn't speak much English and had NO idea that the word was offensive in English/American. Similarly, I used to get a lot of Christmas and birthday gifts of Mexican marker and crayon sets from my Mexican relatives, and yep, the black markers/crayons were labeled "négro" XD It's not an offensive term in Spanish because it's LITERALLY the word for "black" the color, but one must be aware and careful speaking Spanish in America as it IS an offensive racial slur in English.

In Spanish and Portuguese there are two words for Black. We both have "negro(a)", of course. But we have a second word that specifically refers to people of black skin. In spanish it is "prieto(a)" and in portuguese it's "preto(a)". These are considered offensive in our countries, though. However, at least in Brazil, it is common hear "preto" used to describe objects. Like that is a "carro preto" (black car). Race and racism are complicated topics in Brazil though, especially when so many people identify as "pardo" (brown) or mixed race, and we have such a deep and unsettling history with slavery.

When I was a kid, we had an exchange student from Spain stay with us for a year. His name was Carlos, and he was as pale-skinned as I was (I'm adopted and white af) and he had blue eyes and blonde hair. My adoptive family is Mexican, and I grew up speaking Spanish, so I do admit that, as a child, I was initially shocked that Carlos looked "white". I honestly thought Spanish people looked similar to Mexican people because they both spoke versions of the Spanish language. My dad taught me about Spain and its cultural and ancestral history after that, so I learned a thing XD But I admit, when I was 9, it was a bit of a shock!

I am a Brazilian. Born in Brazil to parents born in Brazil. I have pale skin with dark brown hair (well, grey now) and dark brown eyes. I have a niece who's even more pale than I am. I have a sister-in-law from São Paulo who is of Japanese descent, and has VERY pale skin. And I have an aunt who is as dark as mahogany. When I lived in Mexico City I briefly dated a Mexican girl with blonde hair and blue eyes, and covered in freckles. I have a friend from Costa Rica with ginger hair and green eyes. We come in all shades in Latin America.

My husband's family has a lot of Spanish heritage. There's a mixture of dark skinned and light skinned Hispanic people in his family. I honestly thought he was white when I first met him; it's a lot more obvious to me now, with the high Aztec cheekbones and nose, but I didn't think about it too closely back in the day. He's got light skin with olive green eyes. Neither of our sons look the least bit Hispanic aside from bone structure, but funnily enough, their cousins are much more dark skinned. Ancestry DNA is just a bunch of statistics held together with duct tape. They break down your DNA in pieces and associate each with the area where it is most commonly found. But nothing in DNA is really exclusive from a region. It can be useful on a population and historical level to track the flow of people. And even nowadays it's not quite relevant anymore. But as a single person... It's a lottery.

I'm adopted, and there's a reason why I embraced my Scottish and Irish ancestry as a teenager, when I found out my genetic heritage via one of those ancestry sites XD America is a very young country and we don't really have any "cultural heritage" of our own. I was adopted into a Hispanic family, and I do embrace a lot of the Hispanic/Mexican traditions (I had a Quinceañera even though I'm white af, lol.) I'm American and - I am not being facetious - 99% of my family members are overweight/obese/morbidly obese. Fast food is everywhere and easy to get, and there is sugar added to EVERYTHING - our ketchup, our bread, etc. SO many of my relatives have Type II diabetes. One of my cousins died aged 24 due to massive kidney failure from his diabetes that he refused to deal with/treat. My aunt's mom had to have her arm amputated due to diabetes-caused gangrene. So many of my family members have died due to diabetes-related causes or complications from morbid obesity. My younger cousin was obese by the time she was 6. It's absolutely heartbreaking. (And it's 100% self-caused obesity in my family, not from PCOS or other health issues.) We used to have a huge family, and there are only about a dozen of my close relatives left alive at this point. It s***s. Not blaming Murica entirely as my family members had full control over what they ate (and we don't live in a food desert), but man.

As an American, I am constantly appalled and astounded (and not in a good way) by my fellow countrymen who visit other countries and pay zero attention and/or DGAF about the laws and rules of that country - so they try to waltz off the plane with a kilo of weed or other substances, or weapons, etc. - things that MIGHT be legal here in the States but are absolutely NOT legal in other countries. I vaguely recall some athlete traveling to a country where weed is very, VERY illegal (I think Indonesia?) and he brought weed with him and got caught. IIRC he WAS jailed for it and got all píssy about "his rights" and how weed wasn't illegal in America so it was totally acceptable for him to have it, because HE was American. Absolutely shameful.

Many Americans strongly identify with their heritage (although more than a few of them haven't looked at their entire genealogy and just go with the family folklore). I sometimes make jokes about my German ancestors being disappointed in me for not liking sauerkraut or mustard, but don't identify as "German-American". (My family were all Mennonites in Pennsylvania and until WW1/WW2, all spoke an old version of German.)

So was our part of the city years ago, plus parked cars everywhere, holes in the sidewalk, no lanes for bikes. We organized and demanded the mayor to make it walkable and livable. We even had protests (and some of us were fined by the police) 😄 But now we have larger, new sidewalks with benches and trees and playgrounds for children. Here in Murica we're taught 12-hr time in school, NOT "military time". (Similarly, we're taught the Imperial measurements, not metric, in school.) I know a lot of non-Americans think we're stupid for using Imperial and/or 12-hr time, but it's taught to us in school and all of our systems are set up to be displayed in Imperial units and 12-hr time. I promise we're not all idiots, just scréwed over by our education system XD For the most part, ONLY the military uses "military time" - our clocks and everything else uses the 12-hr system, not the 24-hr system. It has nothing to do with being proud of the military or not - we're not taught 24-hr time in school, so most of us have a hard time parsing it easily.

In Europe twelve official, marked, long distance international hiking routes can be enjoyed. The shortest is 1500km, the longest 12000km. Wikipedia has a very neat page about them. One of them, E9, runs alobg the village I live in. But unlike Bill Bryson with the Appalachian trail, I am not tempted to walk it.

I always think of the American date as like stating the time as mm:hh:ss and then trying to justify it by saying "You say 15 minutes past 4"

I had to stop halfway through. It's depressing to live in a country with so many willfully ignorant people. It's even more depressing that because of my nationality, I get lumped in with them. I hope to leave someday when I have the funds to d o so, and I hope the folks where I go can look past my American origins.
