Signs can guide us, and signs can explain things to us, but sometimes, signs can also confuse us. There are more than 40 million signs on the roads of the United States, and some of them can give people headaches as they try to figure them out.
Bored Panda has collected the most hilarious and absurd examples of confusing signs for you in one place. A sign that says, "Turn right," but includes an arrow pointing to the left? Check! Six different plates telling you where and when you can park? Double check! Scroll down and see what road sign nonsense people sometimes have to deal with.

My Town Put Up A Work Zone Speed Limit Sign Thats Faster Than That Roads Speed Limit
I find it nice that the sign allows walking and bicycling at light speed if you want.
People have to pass tests to become drivers for a reason: one part is to learn what different road signs mean. Interestingly, even after passing their exams, many drivers still have trouble deducing what one or another traffic sign means. If you've ever been in a situation where a road sign confused you, you're not alone. According to a survey conducted by My Vision, 58% have had trouble driving because of bad signage.
When researchers asked people to identify particular signs, the majority had trouble with the "Road construction" sign. 13% of the respondents confused it with the railroad crossing sign, 4% thought it was a sign for slow-moving vehicles, and 4% identified it as a no-passing sign. Other tricky signs included the narrow bridge ahead, divided highway ending, and the railroad after turn signs.
This School's Speed Limit Times
In the UK, the speed limit in residential areas in 30. Around schools it tends to be 20, but in some cases they have flashing yellow lights and a sign with a 20 in a circle with the words "When lights flash" below it. When it's school drop off or pickup time, the lights flash and so the speed limit is 20. At other times, when the lights aren't flashing, it's 30. It's a much more elegant solution that the mess above.
Elegant is a very Brit word to describe speed limit signs. Js

Right so. The freedom of citizens should not be restricted any more than is absolutely necessary.
I think I would make a habit of driving at the normally-posted limit through that zone at exactly the gap times until some officer pulls me over and tries to cite me for it, so I can point to the sign and say, "But officer, it's 0831, the school zone limit isn't in effect." This is an attempt to game people's psychology by making the sign to confusing if not outright impossible to fully read and understand when passing it at driving speeds, thus in theory making people slow down... though this really only works for people passing it for the first time, and after that, if they were going to ignore a normal sign, they'll ignore this one.

There used to be a sign near my local airport saying "beware of low flying planes". Not a lot you can do about that.
I asked my dad what they were about, because if the plane was low enough to hit the car they were not flying as they were supposed to and we all had bigger problems, and he said that it was to be aware they would be around and therefore that they wouldn’t startle a driver and make them swerve or something. I’ve never come up with anything better.

The onus really isn't on the motorist to avoid a collision in this situation.
I would think it would be. The car is more under control and more safely maneuverable and better able to stop suddenly than the plane is

You might want to blame drivers for not learning their road signs when they were supposed to. But there might be another explanation for people's confusion with road signs: American road signs are just so different from the rest of the world! Signs like "Can't stop here" and signs denoting the speed limit look almost identical or similar in most countries, whether it's Austria, Japan, India, or Mauritius.
But in America, they're totally different. Why is that? Well, the U.S. refused to adhere to the Vienna Convention on Road Signs and Signals. The government tried to implement European road signage, and experiments were set up on several U.S. highways. However, Americans saw the strange signage as an infringement on American exceptionalism. One citizen even said: "If I saw a Russian sign, I certainly wouldn't pay any attention to it."

Stop before making a turn at the junction, no stopping (e.g. parking or loading/unloading) at or near the junction.
I actually understand that one. You can do that little fake stop (basically a slow down) for the sign. But you may not actually come to a full stop.

Another reason why the U.S. refused to sign the Vienna treaty was that they were in the process of building the interstate highway system. The changes they would have to make to adhere to the treaty and change the road signs probably would've been a logistical nightmare.
But, at the end of the day, America has a pretty long history of cars and driving. Even if the first car was invented in Germany by Carl Benz in 1866, for Americans, the inventor of the American car has always been Henry Ford in 1908. I don't find this confusing; it seems to be saying that yes, amazon deliveries should turn right, even if the GPS (wrongly) tells them otherwise -?
I live in a rural bit of the UK. "Ignore GPS" is common round here. Google maps is regularly wrong.
Load More Replies...We had to put one up in our village because there’s a road/track that on the map appears to cut a corner off, saving all of about 30 seconds, but actually is only used at each end and no one drives all the way along. The middle section is full of exposed tree roots, massive dips where the water has washed chalk away, and big stones. Also on quite a slope so once people realise that it doesn’t feel right it is too steep (and dark from overhanging trees) to start reversing.
I’ve been to places that needed an “Ignore GPS sign,” so this makes sense to me.
Never had GPS, so I relied on Google maps that can be hit or miss. Took a shortcut they recommended in a town I wasn't familiar with and quickly found out it was a dirt fire road that my little car couldn't handle.
I need one for our town and it's tree one way streets. People claim it's maps (Google, apple, Waze, idk) but they're clearly marked so like...are you really going to trust the gps over the actual physical street signs? Makes me concerned about these drivers in road construction areas, honestly.
Yet, Americans aren't the only ones who find road signs confusing. A similar survey by UK company Tempcover Insurance showed that Brits are just as bad at recognizing some road signs as Americans are. For example, 83% failed to deduce what the "No Vehicle" sign meant, and a whopping 73% also didn't know what the blue and red "Can't stop here" sign was for. Other traffic signs that Brits had trouble with were "No Overtaking," signs giving vehicles from the opposite direction priority, and the "End of Dual Carriageway" sign.

A Sign From Above
Confusing Sign On Connecticut Avenue
Ahh, I live in a relatively bigger city in Canada and we have something similar to this, except there are overhead lights with the x’s and check marks over the lanes. I’m pretty sure it’s used on busier high traffic roads. During morning and evening rush hour, depending where there is a heavier flow of traffic, they may open lanes that usually would travel the opposite direction. But because it’s busy, they would leave less lanes open in the direction with less traffic and allow people to use more lanes coming from the higher traffic direction
In Michigan, US23, which is an interstate type road has 'flex lanes' from and to Ann Arbor to I-96. During rush hours the far left shoulder is treated as a travel lane. And Cailyn, just as in Canada, red X's denote when it is closed to use.

Red Route are strictly no stopping, unless in marked bays for specific reasons. That signs states that the Red Route is in force between Mondays and Saturdays between 7am and 7pm. Why Are There So Many Numbers When Only 8 And 139 Seem To Matter?
Exactly. 78 and 278 are interstate roads--they go for a long distance. 8 and 139 are state roads (Missouri, from the shape). I'm guessing the access points for 78 and 278 are along route 8. (Neat thing to note: 3-digit interstates connect to 2-digit interstates with the same ending numbers. 278 is literally "to 78".) So to get to route 78 east, take route 8 east, get on route 278 east at the exit, and then connect to route 78 east.

What Does This Mean? (USA)
In the US, there are confusing laws (varying city by city) on whether you can turn right on red light signal when the way is clear (usually, you can). However, he general rule for an *arrow* signal is you cannot turn right when it it is red, though again, there are a few exceptions here and there. This is one of them where it's stated that you can treat the signal like a stop sign (full stop) before proceeding if the way is clear.
This gets even more confusing when you have two lanes turning right, usually (but not always) only the right-most of the two lanes can turn on red.
Load More Replies...You may turn right on red, but must stop first, then turn. Right lane must turn right, cannot go straight. Must be in an area where it is illegal to make a right turn on a red light

Can anyone read the bottom sign? It's something like "P**N REGROWTH MONITORING AREA"!
Anyone Else Get Confused By This Sign On 195 E
Is This Sign Confusing Or Clear?
Yes. No motor vehicles allowed in the listed times unless you are a permit holder. Does not apply on Bank Holidays, and it is enforced by camera. I suspect this is a very busy route in and out of a city, as those times are typical "rush hour" times.
Trying to keep people from making residential streets in to rat runs.
Load More Replies...We had one very similar in my area which is a residents parking zone. That is buy a permit to park. We also have a bus lane with no parking during rush hour. We didn't want this and told the council so. Of course they ignored us and signs went up. They got painted out and some were removed. Council reinstalled. Same thing happened. They gave up.
Jock Kinneir and Margaret Calvert. did a fine job on UK road signs, back in the day. Fun fact: the "school children crossing sign" features what's effectively a self-portrait of the artist as a young girl... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Worboys_Committee
A number of these are really pushing it - was the author struggling for content when they scraped this from Reddit?
Glad I live in Europe, where the authorities know that lower-case letters are easier to read, and don't go out of their way to make confusing signs.
Hugo: lower case road signs all over Europe? Oh! I'm curious - when exactly *did* France sail off into the Atlantic leaving Europe behind? 😉 https://animalia-life.club/qa/pictures/french-road-signs
