If you are going to live in America, you should be required to know (and be able to speak) English. If you are visiting as a tourist, you shouldn't have that requirement. However, you should be able to communicate basic needs, whether through speech, a translating program, or whatever. Personally, I always learned basic phrases for the various non-English speaking countries I've visited. Locals always appreciate it when a visitor at least tries to speak to them in their language. Plus, the more you speak a foreign language in its native setting, the better you will get at it.

The chain that I miss is Love's BBQ Pit which used to exist across Southern California until 2007, when all U.S. locations closed. Supposedly there is still one existing in Singapore (a franchisee who refused to close down). Love's now has a website where they sell their BBQ sauces online, and they are working on a plan to bring back some restaurants to SoCal.
