That's how to handle it. If you acknowledge that it's inconvenient for all concerned, most people will say, "It's alright, been there, had to do that." It's the smug ones, especially the entitled well-off teens and millenials on their little power trips, that tick cashiers, servers, and such off no end. Back in my customer service says, if the customer acknowledged the situation, I showed them how quickly I could count ones, quarters, dimes, etc. If they just stood there and got all huffy and impatient, I showed them just...how...long...I...could...take--so long as there was no one behind them, of course.

It all depends on which coins are legal tender in a given country. Almost 40 years ago, I was in a dispute with my then landlord, and doing some research, I found out that in the US, the penny (smallest coin) is not legal tender but the nickel (next smallest) is, so I got a month's rent in rolls of nickels and paid it at the office. $350 in nickels weighs a lot!

While I commend her energy, cleverness, and initiative, she reminds me of a baseball pitcher who walks a batter, commits an error, walks another, then strikes out the side to get out of danger. Lots of adrenaline, lots of posturing, but it would have been easier to not let herself get conned in the first place. I'm glad she got her money back, don't get me wrong.

Yah, we have an unspoken policy not to assist a customer on the phone. We have been cussed out too many times for "interrupting" their conversations. It doesn't take anything but a second to pull the phone away and cover the mic if you can't hang up, or say "excuse me one moment" to the person they are talking to. They don't have to hang up the phone to use good manners.

Counterpoint. If someone has had a bad day, is in a bad mood, is generally grumpy or angry, they shouldn't feel like it's okay to take that out on service staff. The issue is people think service staff don't "count" and therefore they can be vile to them because of whatever else is going on. Not okay. It doesn't matter how much you love people, or love working with people, being the verbal punching bag for people gets old very quickly.
