Each place in the world is unlike any other location out there, hence the differences in everything from language to eating habits, and even traffic-related matters. And while some things are not that drastically different, others can seem difficult to comprehend to those unfamiliar with them.

Today, we wanted to shed light on some of such differences; we have gathered instances highlighting certain things that are arguably not that commonplace in the US, as shared by netizens online. Bearing in mind the size of the place, it’s clear that there might be significant differences between life on one of its ends versus the other, but here’s what people online consider to be things locals in the US might not be familiar with.

Below you will find not only the images but Bored Panda’s interview with Social Psychology Area Head and Associate Professor at the Department of Psychology at Arizona State University, Michael E. W. Varnum, PhD, who was kind enough to answer some of our questions regarding cultural differences.

In New Zealand we generally get 4-5 weeks paid leave each year plus several paid Public Holidays throughout the year.

While most of this list is stupid beyond belief, this one is fairly accurate. I get 5 weeks and three days of vacation, but only because I've been working at the same place for two decades and am grandfathered into their old vacation policy. These days it maxes out at four weeks. Almost everyone I work with have one week or none at all.

It's not quite that bad but it's pretty bad. I've worked at a place for almost two years and I started accruing one week (40hrs) of PTO at the end of year one. So yeah I have taken three days off in the last year. At least this place does rollover. Some places are use it or lose it.

I work in a US hospital. There is a 280 hour cap of vacation time. When I use any of that time, it replenishes at each pay period. Any time over 280 goes into unlimited sick time which is completely separate. At the end of the year whatever is left rolls over. I don't know anyone over the age of 25 who doesn't have decent benefits.

Okay yes... why the hell do so many of our stalls have doors that do not go to the floor? This is a genuin irritation for me as an American

    David

I believe a lot of it is 1. We don't have squat toilets - which right away make a stall with a big gap at the bottom useless. 2. You can mop the floor under those gaps. And 3 (probably) you can see if someone is sleeping in the stall or in medical distress. There are "pros" to the gap. But I still prefer the ones that go to the floor.

Same gap/ reveal on the sides. So it's an inch or to closer to the ground. People still going to see your shoes and whatever is around your ankles. If you want privacy go at home or a honey bucket. Why complain about a free privilege?

Due to a law enacted in the 1930’s that says food items may not contain non-food items, these cannot be sold in the US. They came up with a “Kinder Joy” version that has the chocolate on one side and the prize on the other, separated so it is allowed.

    M O'Connell

It's not a choking issue. It's a technicality in an early 20th Century consumer protection law, written to protect you from unscrupulous manufacturers who might adulterate their food products with inedible ingredients (sawdust, ground up bones, etc). The toy, being fully within the chocolate constitutes a non-food ingredient.

While cultural differences can cause all sorts of situations, from confusion to resistance, even, and beyond, they can also show just how diverse and beautiful our world is. It’s no secret that getting acquainted with different cultures is one of the main reasons people travel to places previously unexplored or read books and watch movies seeking to learn more about them.

According to Dr. Varnum, people’s open-mindedness in regards to different cultures depends on numerous factors, one of which is the extent to which they are used to certain things or actions done in a certain way.

“If we are thinking about the personality trait of openness to experience, then this might likely play a role,” he told Bored Panda. “Some people prefer the familiar and hew closely to tradition. Others seek out and relish trying new and different things. To the extent one is more open, one might expect greater curiosity, tolerance, and acceptance of people who may have different cultures than oneself. And indeed, a recent meta-analysis finds evidence for this relationship.”

Capitalism overpowers religious ceremonies. Some can take the time off, but you have to use your PTO. It also depends on the job. My job allows us to have paid days off for most federal holidays. My husband works in the same field, different organization, and the only paid holidays they have off are thanksgiving and Christmas Day. They’re still open for a half day on Thanksgiving, but only a couple of people need to be there, and they time a half pay.

I think that OP means that bikes are more part of everyday life. For example, if I live within a 10k (6,2 mi) radius of my work I either need to take a bus or cycle. My contract states that I am not allowed to park next to the hospital I work at within those limits. Because distances in the Netherlands (red blob in the picture) are small almost everybody uses a bike in their day to day life (taking kids to school, do grocery shopping etc) But ofc that is not the case for the rest of Europe. I still think you don’t have any problems to comprehend this.

Given that Europe is soooooo much older than the USA and the many of the streets/roads are so tiny, this doesn't surprise me. Only 100 or so years after the pioneers were traveling to the west coast USA by covered wagon and then train, Eisenhower was creating the interstate highway system.

The United States Bicycle Route System (abbreviated USBRS) is the national cycling route network of the United States. It consists of interstate long-distance cycling routes that use multiple types of bicycling infrastructure, including off-road paths, bicycle lanes, and low-traffic roads. As with the complementary United States Numbered Highways system for motorists, each U.S. Bicycle Route is maintained by state and local governments.

“There are numerous theories about where cultural differences come from,” Dr. Varnum pointed out, discussing the main factors leading to said differences. “Some emphasize the role of institutions, like the Catholic or Protestant Churches, others focus on how mode of subsistence—the way people make a living or what types of crops they grow—may shape cultural norms and values. Yet other accounts posit that such variation is basically the product of historical accidents.”

That car is sticking out well past the clearly marked zone of parking and is blocking part of the street. Emergency vehicles always need all the clearance they can get.

“My work with my colleagues like Oliver Sng and Alexandra Wormley, as well as research by many other scientists, suggests that at a deeper level much of the variation in psychological tendencies, norms, and behaviors that we see around the world may have to do with adaptive responses to ecological conditions,” Assoc. Prof. Varnum continued.

“These basic features of the environment like climate, levels of infectious disease, and population density have important implications for our evolutionary fitness in terms of survival and reproduction. And it turns out they explain a sizable amount of the variation in culture that we observe around the world. Interestingly, research also suggests that we often see some parallels in terms of links between these features of the environment and patterns of behavior among non-human animals as well.”

The expert pointed out that nowadays, human groups vary in many important ways. “How likely are people to copy others' behavior? How much personal space do we prefer? What values do we think are important? The list of ways in which cultures vary is quite long indeed,” he suggested.

“We live in a world that is increasingly interconnected and in societies that are increasingly diverse. Knowing not only what makes us similar but also how we are different is key to fostering understanding and cooperation.”

Quite familiar to most Americans of a certain age.

    View more comments

While some things on this list might not be something people in the US are familiar with, they seem to put effort into getting to know other cultures, when traveling, at least. A survey of over 2000 Americans found that more than half of them believed that it’s crucial to familiarize yourself with new cultures and gain perspective on new ways of life when traveling.

The survey also revealed that after visiting a foreign country and meeting the locals, four-in-ten viewed them differently than before; roughly half of the respondents said they felt a great affection for locals, and close to 40% believed they shared many social values with them.

I'd take a California beach with a carne asada burrito and a cold beer over any beach in Britain with a tea and a sandwich. Or a Hawaiian beach with some poke and an iced tea. Or a Florida bea...NVM, not going to Florida.

This looks like the giant roundabout at the Arc de Triomphe. Usually roundabouts work pretty well, but only if they're relatively small and traffic already on the roundabout has the right-of-way. Unfortunately, the case is the opposite on both counts there. Consequently, it's a constant vehicular clusterfuck.

In other parts of Spain, not only in the Basque Country there are pinchos and tapas, but there is also the menu of the day. Two courses, dessert, bread, drink and coffee for 13€. In tourist areas and bars for tourists it can be more expensive and of poorer quality.

It is not a claim hand drying is better then machine drying, it simply is. Machine drying schrinks all cloths eventually, they wear sooner and it is the number one electricity using monster in a household (bad for the wallet and climate). As a result more and more Dutch only put the socks and underwear in the dryer and hand dry most wash, even though they have a dryer.

COVID in 2020 caused outdoor seating to explode here. Four years on, most restaurants and bars kept it. There's places here were they closed off sections of the the street to car traffic permanently for pedestrian space and we aren't giving it back.

I think it's supposed to be the idea of the "high street" where people live above shops and restaurants. Some old town restoration projects are trying this concept.

I guess the people who put this story together don't know we too in America eat cold pasta. It's called Pasta salad. You take pasta put veggies and olives chesse maybe some cold chicken or ham if you wish. Mix with a little fresh garlic seasoning spices add a little oil like olive or avocado, grapeseed oil with dash of vinegar . Or mix with a bit of mayonnaise! We too have cold sandwiches "on the go" also! Where I come from you can go to your local Delicatessen have them make you one or go to a convenience store ! Where I live we have WAWA's you can run in pick up a pre-made sandwich nice and cold or go to the kiosk order one hot cold whatever way you want it freshly made by the people behind the counter.

This isn't the flex you think it is. My recent flights had video screens, controllers, usb jack, headphone jack. Those safety instructions were a video (and a card in the holder) and the rest of the time you could watch movies and tv shows or listen to music / podcasts / audiobooks. Enjoy staring at annoying safety yellow your whole flight.

I'm originally from SoCal, and there is no way you want to drink tap water in SoCal. It's crunchy, brown, and vile. We had to switch to bottled water in the early 70s, because my kid brother had serious problems with his kidneys because of the tap water.

Doubt anyone is going to read this, so whatever. I got into an argument with Vix about his response to a comment by John Mosley in this thread. First off, Vix has deleted his initial response (is he ashamed of it?). All of his other comments have been changed repeatedly except one. I have not edited any of my comments. Second, Vix has multiple accounts. I was on another thread when I got a notification that he had responded to me. 28 minutes had passed and he had 6+ upvotes and I had 6- downvotes. Whatever. I commented and sure enough he responded...16 minutes had passed and once again he had 6+ upvotes on his comment and mine had 6- downvotes. Once maybe, but twice is extremely unlikely. This entire thread has been downvoted off the main feed, it's at the bottom of the thread buried at the bottom of an unpopular post. So anyone reading this, don't bother arguing with Vix, it's a waste of time and he will use every dirty trick he has in his small, pathetic bag.

BTW...I have no problem with downvotes. I have some controversial opinions and speak my mind, it comes with the territory. I do have a problem with little downvote trolls running multiple accounts, editing their comments constantly, playing innocent. Vix is NOT good people.
