Most likely, you sent back a quick message in response, letting them know that they mixed up the digits or just simply ignored it. But some people just can’t resist the opportunity to play along with the anonymous sender, resulting in some of the funniest interactions.

We’ve gathered some of them in this list, courtesy of the r/wrongnumber subreddit. Scroll down to find happy accidents that probably brightened someone’s day, and be sure to share your own similar encounters below!

While you’re at it, don’t forget to check out a conversation with cybersecurity and privacy specialist Jonathan Steele and cybersecurity specialist Sam J. Brown, who kindly agreed to tell us about the malicious intent that sometimes hides behind wrong number texts.

There was a text exchange of an old lady and a guy who she thought was his grandson, and after all he was invited to thanksgiving and stayed in touch for years. I hope this ends the same way.

I called my sister once and sang her happy birthday as soon as she said hello. I had mixed up her number and it was the wrong person. Weirdly it was HER birthday too and she was so pleased she chatted for a while.

After my Dad passed away, I'd call his cell phone just to hear his voice. I texted his number right before the first Christmas my husband & I were hosting in our new home. It was beautifully decorated and I was really sad that he wouldn't be around to enjoy it. I was on my way home when my cell phone pinged. I looked over and saw I had a text from "Dad". Damn near wrecked the car. I explained to the person who was reassigned his number and she sent me a very kind response. We kept in touch at the Holidays for 9 years. Linda, I have never forgotten you!

Back in high school (early 1990’s Australia) there was a guy who was famous for his party trick of sticking one end of some toilet paper in his butt & lighting the other end on fire. It was known as “The dance of the flaming a** hole”. I often wonder what happened to him 🤔

While receiving a wrong number text can sometimes lead to amusing outcomes, there’s quite a high chance that the person who ‘accidentally’ mixed up the digits is trying to get the conversation going just enough to deceive you.

This is called a ‘wrong number text’ scam. In the first half of last year, Americans received over 10 billion spam and scam texts per month, and wrong-number text scams are just one type of them. The aforementioned can be especially sneaky and are seen as a growing problem.

When someone texts you saying "Mom wants you to call her" and they aren't in your contacts list, that should be what the kids call "a clue" that it's not a family member.

He returned years later to see hundreds of requests on his website and gave that information to law enforcement. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RentAHitman.com

To learn more about this type of scam and its prevention methods, Bored Panda reached out to cybersecurity and privacy specialist Jonathan Steele and cybersecurity specialist Sam J. Brown.

Brown explains, “Scammers use a tactic known as social engineering, where they try to manipulate people into giving up personal information or performing actions that compromise their security. These messages are often made to seem casual and innocent, like "Is this John?" or "Hey, long time no see!"—something that might make you think it's just a mistaken text.”

When she gives you a fake number, that doesn't mean she's playing you, she just knows that it isn't always safe to say no. Some guys will harass or attack a woman if she doesn't wanna give him her number. And you cannot predict which guys, you have to stay safe.

Once the targeted person is engaged, they may start asking for personal information or send malicious links. “In some cases, scammers may even try to impersonate someone you know from an unknown number, using familiar language or details to trick you into trusting them and letting your guard down. When in doubt, don’t engage—hang up or ignore the text, and contact the person directly using the number you already have for them,” warns Brown.

Steele also mentions that the wrong number texts can further escalate into more consequential scams like phishing, pig butchering, or romance scams, all in hopes of extracting personal or financial information.

Meanwhile, Brown says that the first red flag we should notice is the unknown number that is asking questions or trying to start a conversation.

Another warning sign could be strange conversation starters. “Scammers often use vague messages like “Who is this?” or “Is this [random name]?” to get a response. Once you engage, they may try to gather more information or convince you to click a link,” says Brown.

Requests for personal information are an additional bright red flag that people should identify right away. “Scammers might try to create urgency or appeal to your emotions to prompt a quick response. Messages like “I’m in trouble” or “You’ve won a prize” are designed to make you act before thinking,” Brown adds. “Be highly suspicious of texts that include links or ask you to download something. These could lead to websites that try to steal your information or infect your device with malware.”

I think there's something wrong. I've never seen someone type the name they are writing to in a message, like this one: "Matt: keep a secret..." But maybe she does, and she went into a contact that says Maya, or something, and then told the person this is a message for Matt.

So if you receive a text from an unknown number, the safest thing to do is delete it without replying. “Responding could confirm that your number is active, making you more of a target,” notes Brown. “Never click on links in texts from people you don’t know, as they could lead to phishing websites or install harmful software on your phone. Most smartphones let you block and report suspicious numbers, which can stop further messages.”

Years ago when I still had a landline, I was assigned a number that had previously belonged to a locally-well-known make-up artist (I also used to see her name in the credits of tv shows made here in Toronto). For years, I had people calling trying to reach "Esme," and some would get really angry, call repeatedly, or scream at me for refusing to give them her new number. They couldn't or wouldn't understand that I did not actually know Esme and had no idea how to reach her. This continued even for a few months after I moved and was assigned a new number, because the phone company put a recorded message redirecting callers using the old number to my new one, and people were following it still looking for Esme. Eventually, I presume the problem was inherited by whomever was assigned my old number. I have no idea what became of Esme; for all I know people are still trying to track her down.

Uh, I think it was some random old person because most of them still can't wrap their heads around all this technology. BTW, I'm old, so don't get on me for this. I know our limitations in this area.

I'm also old, and I didn't down vote you, but what does thinking someone you reached via a wrong number would have the correct number have to do with technology? That's a logic issue (or lack of logic, in this case).

What kind of port though? Spaceport? Gun port? A port of entry? A USB port? I mean, 'talking like a port star' would have to be drastically different in every case. I wouldn't like it either if you were talking like a USB port star while discussing a port of entry.

My first thought was what good luck this is! Public defenders are really over worked and have far too many cases to defend each individual well. They often won't even know your name if you're passive. It's tragic. As an activist I've had to work with several and I've found that you basically come to them with questions and to get specific information (evidence etc) relative to your case, but you have to do the work yourself, or hope the court doesn't come for you. If you do so, and they respect it, they can be pretty helpful. But still no where close to the private/pro-bono lawyers I've worked with. Something like this happens, you'll stick in their mind, you can make (light) jokes to keep them engaged and paying attention to your case. They def would want to win this one, lol.

That went from I’m ignoring you to comfort me? What was that number? I think this might be my mother.

Taking ibuprofen might kill me (or so my doctor keeps telling me), but for you, anything!

"on his lunch break"? Sounds like Kevin needs a course on time management, at the very least.

I mean...if kevin can stick stuff up his butt at lunch and get back to work on time, I'd almost argue his time management skills are pretty good!

I have a combined total of about 20+ on both sides of my family. You can have a few of those fine blokes.

I've never gotten this in a text but my email spam folder is positively littered with them.

This is one of the more successful types of text scams because the odds that the recipient is expecting a package is pretty high these days. Tip: Keep it simple. If you think it's possible the text is legit you can 1. look up the contact information for the delivery service (USPS, FedEx, whatever) and contact them directly without ever, ever clicking on links sent in texts or 2. contact the merchant you're expecting delivery from.

I had a similar one today that turned out to be legit when I looked up something I ordered, imagine that! Had never heard of the delivery company, and estimated delivery date isn't for another 7-10 days; I was sure it was a scam or wrong # at first.

For some reason, my phone keeps letting this one through. I get this about once a week, just block and move on. It keeps coming from different (likely spoofed) numbers in the Caribbean in my case.

That's just mean - the horse is probably much loved by its worried owner. (Having recently had my own beloved pet cat PTS, I'm feeling a bit sensitive to such things!)

If the owner truly cared about their horses, they would've had the right number for the doctor taking care of it.

I hope the horse is alright!! You don't mess with people like that! It's cruel and uncalled for!! My fur babies are my world and a message like this would devastate me.
