Nothing makes human beings happier than a nice freshly cooked meal made with love and effort (skill optional). So no wonder so many of us are putting on the aprons and rocking our inner Gordon Ramsay back at home.

And while many succeed in cooking something that ends up on their Instagram feed, others are not so fortunate. So this post is about hope and failure, failure and hope: kitchen edition, where dreams of tasty bites get shattered by the reality check of burned, overcooked, weirdly shaped and very unappetizing (in)edible artifacts.

Scroll through some of the best of the worst ones below and be sure to check out our previous cooking fails here, here and here.

Previously, pie artist and baking and cooking pro Jessica Clark-Bojin shared a few great tips and tricks with Bored Panda to help all of us out in the kitchen and prevent massive disasters from happening. "Kitchen 'mistakes' can range from the catastrophic, 'I forgot the pot roast in the oven and now the kitchen is on fire' to the more benign, 'I accidentally put paprika in the cookies instead of cinnamon,' but in most instances, they stem from the same thing: distraction and a lack of preparation."

I did that once myself... once. Had water and potatoes in a favorite pot. Left it on boiling so long, all the water evaporated. I noticed when I smelled something strange. The potatoes were burned to the inside and the metal was melted just like in this pic. I think it's the soldering between the pot and the bottom piece they put on the pot for better cooking.

Jessica pointed out that anyone who wants to improve in the kitchen should start by taking some time to think about and picture in their mind all the steps before diving in and starting to bake or cook. That way, you can avoid slip-ups, blunders, and setting your entire kitchen aflame. "Make sure you have all the ingredients you need before you start baking. Work 'mis-en-place' and have all the bowls, spoons, tools, etc. cleaned and out on the counter ready for you. Measure out dry ingredients in advance, and (if called for) portion out wet ingredients to chill in the fridge. Clean up pots and pans while your mixture bakes," Jessica shared.

Thought this was common practise, but in case it’s not (as in this post): Crack your egg into a small cup first. See/smell if it’s okay, then add it to the bowl and crack your next egg into the cup.

Also, if you submerge your eggs in cold water you cn tell how fresh they are. If they float, they are bad. If they sit upright like they wanna float but can't, you should be ok (No promises though lol!) But I do the egg water test if I'm unsure if they are still ok

I often crack them one at a time into a cup and only throws them into the batter once they have passed quality control, when I know I am going to use a lot of eggs. It prevents you from having to throw out expensive ingredience in a situation like that, and it makes it easier to remove the stray eggshells before it mixes in.

I cracked open a bad egg for the first time ever in my 50 years, just a few weeks ago (farm share eggs). It didn't smell like I thought it would - I imagined a sulfurous fart smell - this was more of a bad breath, meets old dishrag, meets decomposing squirrel kind of smell. Very unpleasant and very strange.

For anyone that doesn't know, you can check a cake is cooked by pushing a metal skewer (or thin bladed knife, but a skewer obviously does less damage) into the middle. It should come out basically clean/lightly oiled - if it has cake mix on it you're not there yet. Make sure your oven's really well pre-heated, too...

This is mostly because the lid is not the size of the pan. It got overheated and the glass was not made for that kind of temperatures. I'd suggest not using glass lids for frying at all.

Had a friend who just could not cook. She tried to make a turkey at Thanksgiving when she was first married. She prepped it and put it in the oven, then went to greet her guests, who were bringing the other side dishes and all. Like a Thanksgiving pot luck. Several hours went by, and it was finally time to eat. Guests had been wondering why there was no smell of turkey baking, but were too polite to ask. My friend went to get the turkey out of the oven. That’s when she discovered she had put it in the oven but not turned the oven ON! Needless to say, it’s a mercy it was a pot luck. They had a side dish Thanksgiving that year, and her husband has cooked the turkey every Thanksgiving since. Luckily he’s good at it.

Done that with eggs boiling. Sat down to read for the 20 or so minutes they needed, fell asleep for about an hour or so, woke up to a loud popping noise. Did you know eggs can explode if you let the water boil away?

Did this with worcestershire... opened the cap and proceeded to shake about 5 oz of sauce into my food as the shaker cap came off with the lid.

It’s disgusting. Agreed. But what’s really gross is how nasty that fingernail looks. How can anyone with nails like that be around food prep?

i know a lot of people store things in the oven (i don't). but why do you turn it on before you get everything out of there? i mean even if you don't have plastic in there.. it's a pain in the *ss to get everything out there AFTER you turned the oven on..

How many people fall asleep while cooking??? What's wrong with you? Set a timer, keep standing next to your oven...whatever. Just don't lay down when you are hungry and tired. This could kill you and a few others.

What's wrong with this? I find it hard to buy for and cook only a single portion at a time. While I usually keep it in the fridge for the next day I sometimes make a big batch and portion freeze it.
