What’s the best way to soak up knowledge? Some may argue that this requires spending your days in the library, reading countless books on a wide range of topics. Others might say that it’s best to get out and see the world. Traveling and talking to interesting people will widen your horizons more than a book ever could.
But most of us don’t have the time or resources to choose either of those paths. So the easiest way to acquire more knowledge might just be learning fun facts! That's why we took a trip to Weird Facts on Instagram and gathered some of their most fascinating posts below. Enjoy scrolling through this list full of unexpected information, and be sure to upvote the posts that teach you something new!

I have a respect for elephants. They are much more intelligent and empathic that most people believe.
The story is actually written from Sam's perspective. He is definitely the main character in it, despite the first impression. He certainly is the most heroic, even being able to resist the pull of the Ring, which even Frodo can't. A true hero, without whom the plot would have failed several times.
I love that we see what the ring tempted him with and it was all about being a great gardener
Let's not forget he was pure enough to be possessed by an ancient elf warrior spirit and then he fought Shelob like a b****s and tricked her into wounding herself almost fatally. He is altruism personified.
They are all heroic in their own way but Sam is definitely the "chief hero" 🩷
If I remember correctly he has more flirting with Moneypenny in at least one of the later ones, which was way better because they're the same age
This is a funny coincidence because I was actually watching his last Bond movie yesterday and noticed the same thing! I just happened to flip channels and find it on. A View to a K!ll is the movie. It also stars Christopher Walken as the villain with bleached blond hair. 😂
He could have demanded female co-stars his own age. Plenty of them talented and available.
Studio bosses would not have allowed it. Just like now apparently

A little note here in anticipation of crystalwitch adding something illiterate and unnecessarily inflammatory. Hopefully she will refrain from doing so.
One of the biggest complaints I remember my classmates making in school was that we were always forced to memorize endless facts. Rather than getting hands-on lessons with real-world applications, we were expected to remember dates, names and places without enough context to understand their significance. To this day, I can tell you that the mitochondria is the powerhouse of the cell. But can I explain what that actually means? Absolutely not.
Nowadays, however, it’s easy for adults to go months without learning anything new. Sure, you’ll read what’s going on in the news. But you might not be learning any new skills or information that’s actually useful. In this case, fun facts can be a wonderful way to get some new knowledge into your routine. They’re digestible, don’t take much time, and they can be used as wonderful conversation starters!

I had to check up, but the 75 feet refers to the drop to the water line. At first I thought it just meant that the hole was 75 feet deep.
Very brave. But why was a class of 3 year old kiddos in that kind of place?
This story was published before and I asked exactly the same question. Apparently they were in the forest and nobody knew there was a hole there. I can't remember if there was a mine, or some kind of underground b**b shelter from WWII. The teacher had been there several times and the place had been perfectly safe until the hole appeared.
Load More Replies...Why did it take 2 hours? Surely safety equipment should be available?
Even if a rescue team got there quickly, it's going to take some considerable time to set up a 75ft rappel.
Load More Replies...Learning facts may not be as engaging as learning a new skill, such as how to play an instrument or how to speak another language. But it still has benefits! According to Kaplan, we must remember that knowledge really is power. The more you know, the better your problem solving and reasoning skills will become.
Knowledge is also cumulative. So once you get that snowball of learning rolling, it’ll become even easier to pick up more information. Plus, when you have more context for the information you learn, you’ll be able to make connections more easily. For example, if you know what was going on in one part of the world during the 1850s, finding out what was happening in another country might make even more sense.
Finnish cuisine is not the best, tbh. For most of the history Finns have had to eat what they can get or starve so it's not fancy and it's not always healthy. Of course there are exceptions to that.
I had the best pizza in Finland. Chicken, blue cheese and wait for it - pineapple chutney.
It was a good thing for him to have done, but it doesn't negate the spousal a b use he inflicted on Rita over the years, just like John Lennon, he was a very flawed, if talented, man.
Absolutely ridiculous that it isn't just from when you buy the property. You have to wait a generation before you're entitled to keep access to the sky?
It dates from when the property was built and so applies to the vast majority of UK homes. It stems from easement right laws, which work on the assumption that if something has been done openly for 20 years and no-one objected, it’s probably reasonable and should be legally protected.
Load More Replies...Too bad they that wasn't a law in NYC. Grand Central Terminal might still have daylight streaming into the windows.
Not as cut and dry as that unfortunately. It is a right to a minimum level of light and not necessarily direct sunlight. Ie if you have direct sunlight into your kitchen or garden from 9am to 6pm there is nothing stopping a development being built that reduces that to one or two hours a day. As long as your home is not in complete shadow all day every day unfortunately you just have to suck it up
Acquiring more knowledge is also a great way to keep your brain active. Americans currently spend an average of five hours and 16 minutes on their phones every single day. And unfortunately, most of that time probably isn’t spent learning new skills and improving cognitive function. So it’s great to break the routine and make an effort to spend some time each day learning fun facts. This information will actually make you think, and it’s a much better way to spend your time than scrolling through brain rot content.
Well, as far as I know, Poland does have universal healthcare.
Load More Replies...Why? Poland has national health care. Even covered in the eu if the operation can’t be in poland.
That is because the surgery had to be done in the USA. USA continues to deliver far more medical breakthroughs than any other country in the world and it's disproportionate high health care costs (especially in R&D) essentially subsidizes health care innovation and costs around the world. Also - Even if Polish or EU surgeons could have performed this surgery, EU healthcare would not have paid for it anyway since most countries that offer universal health care restrict experimental or unproven procedures (and sometimes even restrict extremely expensive d***s or procedures on old patients if they deem that the procedure would not significantly improve quality or time of life).

I think Mr. Rogers would be horrified and disgusting at what America has become.
Mr Rogers would have testified before Congress and made PSAs that would have prevented that from happening.

I wish we had something like this here in the UK. I suppose the closest person was Tony Hart.
There is a story, it may or may not be true, that Mr Rogers had his car stolen. He reported it to the police and it made the news. Two days later the car was back in it's parking place, fuel tank filled up, freshly washed, with a note "We are terribly sorry. " If we knew it was you we would never have touched it"
As it should be. In many ways the ancients were more advanced than us. This was particularly true before the dominance of Abrahamic religions
You do realize that when they say men, they specifically mean men who weren't slaves. Slaves, on the other hand, far from being able to take time off from work, were made to work by being literally being whipped until they died from working. So maybe we shouldn't look to ancient Egypt for worker's rights.
Load More Replies...First we gotta (America, at least) let women themselves take time off for menstruation. It is miserable. The first few days I can be doubled over or curled up in pain. I can bleed through a pad in less than an hour. Yup there have been many embarrassing instances where I soaked through at work and had a big patch of blood on my pants. I've resorted to keeping spare pants in my cubby or truck. We should at least be allowed a couple days dang it 🫠
I mean, one of my friends sometimes literally faints from her cramps, and that's with all the meds and methods modern science offers. Can't imagine how the poor ladies got through this in the past, but pretty sure that for some of them the care they got from their husbands and fathers was absolutely essential.
Then ask yourself how you can improve your behavior and actions.

I had a crush on Beethoven when I was a little girl and this anecdote used to bring tears to my eyes
Several classical composers died during or shortly after their ninth symphony, including Beethoven. This led to the belief by some of the curse of the ninth, and that a composer's ninth symphony would be their last. Inside number 9 (British anthology TV show) had an episode based on the superstition..
Look at the original piano of Beethoven. It was literally hammered. He hit it as hard as possible to hear something.
That's because Beethoven was metal before metal even existed. :)

We absolutely should...but who would run the country?
Load More Replies...The Athenian democratic process of Ostracism could be used on any citizen of the city state, for up to 10 years. It was a two stage process, open to any citizen, had external oversight so tyrants couldn't aㅤbuse it (yet it was aㅤbused), required specific quorum to succeed (most sources state 6000), and had a penalty if they broke exile. None of the exiled one's possessions were taken away, they didn't lose their status or position, there is no stigma on return. It was mostly used by politicians to prevent rivalry to their seat of power, so was quite susceptible to propagandisation and corruption.
Pretty sure that's existed as long as secrets have existed
Load More Replies...Another tip Vox shared is capitalizing on the skills you already have. You don’t have to start from scratch just to prove to yourself that you can. If you already know how to play one instrument, it might be easier to pick up another than learning a foreign language from square one. In the same vein, if you grew up playing tennis, it might be easier to learn how to play padel than basketball. You’ll still be learning something new, but you might find the experience more enjoyable than starting at 0.

If you're the sort that gets fat in the middle you're much more at risk for all kinds of illnesses. The scientists have actually suggested that a better number to monitor a person's health than the deeply flawed BMI is the roundness index (BRI) which compares persons height to their waist.
That totally makes sense, it's as important as cholesterol level for example. Abdominal fat increases cardiovascular risk.
The US Air Force (probably the other branches too) has a waist measurement as part of their fitness testing. If I recall correctly, acceptable waist measurement varies with age. If one does not pass, they have a certain amount of time to show progress towards the standard. If one does not show progress, they may be forced out of the service.

The quacks in my situation were the medical doctors prescribing muscle relaxers and pain meds before I saw the chiropractor. The pain was greatly reduced after my first chiropractic visit and completely solved in 3 visits. I now only go occasionally. I never understand why chiropractors are so dismissed here when I read these ridiculous comments.
Chiropractic medicine is legit if the doctor is too. Just like traditional medicine. If the doc is a quack it's because of their lack of ability not the treatment. My grandfather was a chiropractor for 50 years and never injured anyone. A bad apple (or a whole rotten barrel) doesn't mean apples are inedible.
Properly trained chiropractors are not unscientific and are actually very useful for skeletal and muscular issues. I know they have a bad rep in the States.
Chiropractic is a pseudoscience. It's filled with antiscientific and pseudoscientific ideas. Collectively, many systematic reviews have demonstrated that spinal manipulation is NOT an effective treatment for ANY medical condition. It's complete BS and it isn't "scientific" at all.

Load More Replies...Serious question. What can you do with asthma and chronic bronchitis. They say humidifier for the Bronch, but that messes up the asthma. COPD sucks. (Don't smoke kids. Especially for 48 years.)
I also have asthma and COPD, I asked the respiratory team why people with diabetes get all their prescriptions free, whereas those with asthma don't? Was told that's because asthma is 'a collection of symptoms' rather than a definitive diagnosis. Different treatments work in different ways for individual asthmatics. Hence, some need humidity, some dry air, some need cool and some warmth, Pretty much the only thing agreed on is that abrupt changes in temperature or humidity play havoc with asthma and/or COPD, and *that* is why you're given an emergency pack.
Load More Replies...Not every case of chimerism in humans (or animals) results from an absorbed twin. Mosaicism is actually far more common in human chimerism than the form that arises from absorption of a zygote. It's likely Lydia Fairchild (the woman referenced in this post) has mosaicism, since the DNA from her skin and hair did not match the DNA of her children, but the DNA from her cervical smear did. This points to somatic mutation, not allogenic fusion.

Edit: I made a mistake in my description. Even though seismographs existed yet, the thing that was measured all over the world was the atmospheric pressure that increased dramatically, then dropped.
From what I remember, what made the explosion so powerful was the fact that water surrounding the island had leaked into the caldera after a smaller initial explosion which created steam that built up under great pressure which when it finally burst created a powerful shockwave

A bit misleading. It was ONE particular beluga whale, named Noc, who lived at a marine research facility, who did this. There are no documented cases of it happening in wild belugas or in any other beluga besides Noc. Load More Replies...The wording makes it sound like they can change color as rapidly as a chameleon can, which isn't true XD It IS true that a Siamese cat's (and any cat with the "pointed" coat pattern) coat is affected by temperature. When they are born, Siamese kittens are usually nearly pure white/light cream. They do NOT have dark "points" at birth. These develop as they age - the eumelanin deposits in the "coldest" parts of their bodies: legs/feet, tail, ears, and face. Sometimes Siamese cats will get darker on their entire bodies as they age, because their circulation is not as good, their blood is "thinner", and their entire body is slightly cooler than when it was a younger cat. Similarly, Siamese cats who live in very warm climates, like the desert/Arizona in the US, can lighten in color and their "color points" may shrink. These things will not happen to EVERY Siamese cat, however :)
But actual Sealpoint Siamese cats were always a deep cream colour on their sides and slightly darker along the spine. The darker colouring has been bred out of them now and "Sealpoints" are actually really pale now. It's disappointing because now they look almost as bland as "Bluepoints" are.

They were destroyed because that was a condition of the failure of the experiment, ad a failure it was.
Don't come in here with context when rage bait is all the... rage.

Patel is one of the most common Indian surnames in the Gujerat area, from where a lot of them historically migrated to East Africa and beyond (notably the UK when many were kicked out of Uganda) and formed small businesses. It's also related to a particular caste who tended to be small-scale landowners. The name itself is derived from a Sanskrit term for 'village headman'.

some people are going back to DVDs and blu-rays because unless you have the physical copy, you don't really have it and finding anything you want online is such a hassle if it's even possible

That's a nope from me. I'm usually ok during the movie. It's when I'm home, late at night that the horrors get me.
The prison also has a massive cㅤocaine trafficking ring, there is heavy bribery, ad it is considered a danger to life for a police officer to enter. It's not a good place.
I was just thinking "why are they in prison if they're so well organised"
