The world has seen lots of talented and capable photographers throughout history. But not everyone’s work gets as much time in the spotlight as it should. But if you spend time digging through the historical archives looking for iconic snapshots, it’s well worth the effort.

‘Utterly Unique Photos’ is a fantastic history and photography-oriented online community that shares vintage (mostly but not always) black-and-white historical photos. We’ve collected some of the most interesting ones, recently featured by members of the group, to give you a glimpse into the past from a fresh perspective. Scroll down for a trip through time.

Meanwhile, Bored Panda reached out to Daniel Holland, the founder of ‘Utterly Unique Photos’ and the ‘Utterly Interesting’ brand, for a friendly chat about his projects and iconic photography. You’ll find our interview with him below.

Not all heroes wear capes, and it is people like Hasan that should have statues and monuments errected in their honour.

And they should do Netflix series about those heros. And not about serial killers, stalkers or other monsters.

Compare to Uvalde, Texas, where upon hearing that there was active shooter, Salvador Ramos, seen on the school lawn, a teacher opened a door, allowing him in despite the lockdown. THEN, as he started k*****g people one by one, dozens of law enforcement officials (LEOs) arrived and instead of stopping him, simply prevented anyone from attempting to rescue the kids. The kids had been drilled to stay still, stay in the school, and wait for LEOs to arrive. He had hours to k**l the kids. Finally, an off-duty ICE agent saw him through a window and shot him dead. Had a staffer not propped the door open, he would never have gotten in. Had the kids not been told to stay put and wait for LEOs, some would have escaped. Had LEOs served or protected the public, there may only have been a few casualties.

UPDATE: Local officers had grazed him, and believed they had him trapped in an office. They were ordered out of the building, allowing the shooter to escape. The school announced the students were safe, and the school safely locked down at 11:43. Most or all of the killings happened after this, while numerous calls of reported killings poured in from student, trapped, waiting rescue. The shooter was finally k****d at 12:50. Off-duty Border Patrol agents actually shot him, after entering an unlocked door that the police falsely reported locked.

He doesn't. Doesn't everyone have that one uncle or neighbor that has always looked the same? My dad had a rough life with mental illness but when I took in his high school pic and a photo of him from 20 years ago when he was on life support the ICU nurses even said he still looks handsome. He was a good hearted man just like Bernie. Ugly eventually creeps out, that's why people need makeup and plastic surgery.

Sorry to burst bubbles here, but Bernie is only out for Bernie. I served on multiple state commissions in Vermont under both Republican and Democratic governors. Bernie ONLY supports ideas that have no chance of succeeding because he's then never at risk. We tried repeatedly to get Bernie to join us on workplace child-care initiatives, strengthening of school-to-work transitions for non-college bound students, and worker safety. No interest. (Before I get completely trashed by Bernie-lovers, I agree with his sentiments but I challenge you to find anything he's ever accomplished that wasn't started by someone else.) Regardless of genuine efforts by people serious about making real change, Bernie's usual contribution was to say "it didn't go far enough." Bernie as President only looks good because Howdy Doody would look good compared to our current leader. (Sigh! Let the downvotes begin.)

Trigger warning sadness... Yet the man photod the starving child stalked by a vulture because he was supposedly told to not interfere/intervene with the local conflict. Also conflicting stories on his reasons. His name was Kevin Carter and he offèd himself shortly after winning a Pulitzer Prize for the photo he bragged about capturing. It's depressing that this man is saving a donkey, which I love, but a man with a camera couldn't pick up a starving baby.

    Jude Corrigan

So if he had picked up the baby and provided food. What would happen when he left? How would the child be fed then? Should the photographer have saved that one child but left others to their fate? I am not trying to be nasty to you but it is a very idealistic view that the one photographer should or could have saved that child.

Sara Frazer: I'm a human being who's defending the RULE OF LAW! - what does it matter where I'm from? If you check your notes, you'll see that I've been pointing out that if someone is accused of a crime, they should be arrested and put on trial rather than just plain kílled. All it is is this: Osama bin Laden was accused of crimes and should have been tried in a court of law. Check your notes again: it's considered Bad Form even in the USA to just shoot people dead on the basis of allegations. Look up Adolf Eichmann: he was one of the chief architects of the Hólocaust with oh so much more metaphorical blood on his hands than Osama. Israel sent a team in to Argentina to kidnap him and put him on trial in Israel. They could easily have just kílled him in Argentina - but no, Israel decided that one of the worst N@zi war criminals still alive deserved a fair trial (after which they hanged him dead). What excuse does the USA have for failing to give Osama the same treatment? The US sent a team in which could have extracted him.

"For those exploring photography today, focus on light, texture, and composition. Pay attention to how shadows and contrast shape emotion, and aim to evoke feeling rather than perfection," Daniel told Bored Panda.

"In a world saturated with images, black-and-white remains timeless because it makes us pause and actually look properly, so black-and-white is a great place to start."

That was one of two main ways into the industry - the other being the norther club circuit. It began with the Beyond the Fringe crowd (Peter Cook, Dudley Moore, Jonathan Miller, Alan Bennet), through the Goodies, Monty Python, Douglas Adams, Richard Curtis, Rory Mcgrath, Tony Robinson, Angus Deayton, up to Stephen Fry, Hugh Laurie and Emma Thompson. These days talent shows and reality TV are creating more "stars".

The Soviets took high losses and played a critical role in defeating Hitler. But a lot of their losses were due to Stalin's poor judgement, from trusting Hitler to honor his 5 year pact (when he broke every other pacts) to executing the intel officers who gave him weeks before the German invasion the info that Germany was going to invade, as well as copies of German plans their spies got, to refusing to release reserves in the opening days of the German invasion, to in 1940 ordering all the fixed defenses deep in Soviet territory destroyed, bc he felt inner defenses was defeatists, so when his front lines fell, there was nothing to stop the germans, and so on. He even gave days before the German Invasion an order to execute any general that would attack German troops crossing the border or planes over the border bc "the germans were looking to provoke a response", etc. And later Stalin wasted many good troops and civilians bc of his pride based policies rather than best strategy

I want to share a sweet story of two WW2 vets. I was serving in the Peace Corps in Armenia in the 90s. I had a photo of my grandfather wearing his WW2 uniform, which amazingly still fit him decades after serving. I showed the photo to my Armenian friend's grandpa, who immediately went and put on his Soviet WW2 uniform and ordered me to take his picture to show my grandpa. He said, "tell him thank you from his brother in Armenia."

“Initially, I created r/UtterlyBizarre at the end of 2022 to mirror what I was posting on my Twitter channel. But it was pointed out that some of the content I posted was more interesting than bizarre,” he said.

Reacting to this, Daniel decided to expand.

“So I set up r/UtterlyInteresting a month later to share articles and videos that interest me. One of my key areas of interest is photography and history, and I felt I was posting quite a lot of this to the r/UtterlyInteresting subreddit, and it would probably sit better on its own subreddit, hence r/UtterlyUniquePhotos,” he shared.

According to the founder of ‘Utterly Unique Photos,’ he didn’t want to simply contribute to other online groups that already existed.

He wanted niches to truly call his own. “One of the reasons I set them [the subreddits] up was because I wanted to be free of the rules employed by more established subreddits.”

That being said, leading several popular subreddits can be quite challenging. “As they've grown, I realize I may need to implement submission rules, as all the subreddits are completely open to submissions, and spreading myself across 3 subreddits containing 100k members can be a challenge," the creator told Bored Panda at the time. (The 4th subreddit was founded later.)

Meanwhile, Daniel also has a personal blog, ‘Utterly Interesting,’ where he shares interesting stories in a different format, with more depth. "Some of the bigger pages on Reddit saw this as self-promotion, so I thought I'd set up my own pages and not be concerned about Reddit moderators," he said.

It’s absolutely insane. When I was growing up there was an older man in our neighborhood who had terrible scars like those in the photo from smallpox. He was a very nice man and didn’t want kids to be scared of him so he would always explain and say to us how lucky we were to get vaccinated. Now some people would rather take their chances than take their medicine. What a slap to all those who had no option.

Hair loss isn't a side effect of measles that I knew about. I know about blindness and going deaf, plus other complications. And without a vaccine, the only choice was to try to survive measles at home in a dark room. Must have been quite traumatic to cut off their hair in the days when it was fashionable to have waist-length hair.

The measles rash often starts or spreads to the head, which can cause hair loss. But more commonly hair loss is a side effects of being ill, especially common in folks with autoimmune issues. Viruses cause this more often than other types of illness but any experience of being very ill cN result in hair loss.

We don't get a lot of snow here in the middle of NC. One lady that I worked with in Durham and lived in Raleigh normally took about 30 mins to getting home...took almost 5 hours that day. They closed all of our clinics and schools closed, it was icy under the snow and people were driving 2 freaking fast or were following 2 close that caused a lot of the accidents. You should have seen it in January of 2000 when we got 2 feet of snow. Me and the kids were stuck at home for 2 weeks. My husband worked at a power company for almost 40 years. The phone rang at about 2:30 that morning & they called the whole line crew in. I got up and made his breakfast while he was in the shower and a bunch of sandwiches for the 4 guys on the truck. When they go out like that you don't know when they will get back home. There's a little country store that the owners live next door and they always had coffee, soup and sandwiches that they gave to the guys.

I live in a little bit north of Raleigh and can say, this photo perfectly shows what happens when we get snow. Roads are now brined which help but our snows frequently start with rain which washes off the brine. It's an all out holiday when we get snow!

Several decades ago, a few tribe people were kidnapped by anthropologists to be studied. Two of them died quickly, the others were sent back to the island. It was a huge mess-up and the reason why the government passed laws to stop anyone from approaching the island: no one knows the impact the people who were brought back had on the population, they might've spread diseases.

No, it's probably residual of wearing a corset. Many (MANY) men corseted as a means of a trimmer, sleeker figure in a tux or cutaway jacket. It was very common in the Victorian era. You can see that the muscle has atrophied away below his diaphragm. (note: I was involved in corseting in the 90s and did a lot of research and still have a few I wear.)

honestly britney spears reminds me of judy garland. I know the conservator went on longer than needed but I think it stepped in when needed before she broke down completely when she was too young. I really think shes still here because it helped giver her breathing room for her to mature mentally as everything she went through stunted her psychological growth since they needed her to stay young and thin and pretty. Again it went on too long but I think it saved her life. She still has mental health problems but I hope shes in a place she feel like she can get help now.

more context from wikipedia: buried her in a shallow trench inside a fiberglass-reinforced box. The box was outfitted with an air pump, a battery-powered lamp, water laced with sedatives, and food. Two plastic pipes provided Mackle with outside air.

BTK. He got caught eventually for goading the police. They tracked him down with metadata from a floppy disk. From his church! That he was some sort of office holder (idk what its called, sorry). I not only feel horrible for his victims, but his daughter. To think your dad, who by all outward appearances was the doting father, hid his horrible, horrendous side from her, until he was arrested. Then I think he FAFO in court, like self incriminating or something. Arrogance was his downfall. He had been silent for a while until that fateful letter to the press taunting the police.

This is dangerous as hell - if the sand collapses in on them, they suffocate from the pressure on their chests even while their heads remain above the sand and by the time you can get enough sand off of them, they'll be dead.

its not very likely to collapse with flush sides like it has. most of the collapses of tunnels and holes you will see like this is due to undermining, or digging the bottom of the hole wider than the top. in this situation, they are in no more than 3 feet of sand, with flush packed walls, so they would be relatively okay even if it were to collapse from the sides. the biggest threat at this point to them would be falling asleep before high tide.

this is shortly after the adoption of boxing gloves, which made the sport quite a bit more dangerous than it had been. contrary to what many people think, the idea of a boxing glove is not to protect the other persons face from damage, but your own knuckles. when boxing switched from bare knuckle to gloved, the punches got faster and harder becasue you no longer risked breaking your hands from a single punch. in fact, when the rules changed the heavyweight champ was a bareknuckle fighter and was knocked out in like the second round by his opponent with gloves on. more boxers have died due to fights after the adoption of gloves than before it.
